Pedro Martinez's beef with Mike Piazza covered family honor, a whole lot of money, and camp drama

  • Mike Piazza and Pedro Martinez both debuted for the Dodgers in September 1992, and while they didn't stay teammates for all that long, they stayed connected. Just, you know, not in a really friendly way. From Pedro defending his brother Ramon, to Piazza wanting to earn more than Pedro, to a few beanings and a whole lot of jawing in the media, these two Hall of Famers kept the beef alive.
    Oh yeah, and then they both wound up playing for the Mets.

      Yes, Konerko started his career with the Dodgers. One thing they did right in the 90s was take a chance on a Japanese player playing in the big leagues. The Dodgers signing Hideo Nomo is the reason for every Japanese player playing in MLB the last 24 years. They also signed the first Korean baseball player the year before (Chan Ho. Park).
      In the 1980s, they gave away Sid Fernandez to the Mets, John Franco to the Reds, and Dave Stewart to the Rangers. I also read that the Dodgers would have signed Roger Clemens in 1983. but went for a left-hander after Steve Howe went AWOL.

    • @DrunkenSlob
      @DrunkenSlob 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      IMightBeBiased that’s because they traded Martinez. If he was in the rotation with his brother and Nomo and Valdez all at the same they could’ve won pennants and maybe more and later they added Brown and Park. Things just never came together at once

First one was 79-82, with Rick Sutcliffe, Steve Howe, Fernando Valenzuela, and Steve Sax, and then, in 92-96, it was Eric Karros, Mike Piazza, Raul Mondesi, Hideo Nomo, and then Todd Hollandsworth. Fun thing about the mid-90's streak, all 5 of them played in Bakersfield, California, my hometown. Granted, Hideo only played 1 game, but stil.

      @@joegti10 423 over 1823 attempts isn't impressive. Tony Pena threw out 656 over 1880 attempts and Ivan Rodriguez threw out 661 over 1447 attempts.
      What's really interesting is that not only was he bad at throwing out runners, but evidence suggests that his reputation might have caused runners to be more likely to steal against him. Over his career there was an average of 1.12 steal attempts per game. Compare that to, say, Jason Varitek - a catcher who is thought of as average as far as his arm even though the numbers indicate that he was just as bad as Piazza for CS (301 CS in 1293 attempts) but who only saw .87 attempts per game.
      Lazy Revolutionary mentions that he might have been good at framing pitches, and while I haven't seen the Catchella data which Baseball Prospectus created, I would observe that he did only allow 356 wild pitches and 102 passed balls over 1629 games, for .27 pitches not caught successfully per game. To compare, Varitek (who has a well-deserved reputation as a framer) allowed only 283 wild pitches and 105 passed balls for a total of .26 pitches not caught successfully per game. Pena is at .35 pitches not caught successfully per game and Rodriguez at .39 pitches not caught successfully per game.
      So, was Piazza's arm trash? Yep. Was he bad defensively? Depends what you define as defense. He maybe should've been a first baseman, though.

As for Clemens, Mike would not give him a hug if he ran into him in the street today. The guy took karate lessons to learn how to fight because of Clemens. For real. That’s where there was beef. And, oh, as a footnote, Piazza handed Clemens his lunch whenever he faced him. His career numbers against him were absurd. Game winning home runs, grand slams, multiple big hits. He owned him.

    Clemens did receive some retaliation.....sort of. His first AB at Shea after the 2000 WS was against Shawn Estes.....who attempted to bean him with the first pitch, but missed and threw behind him.

    Yes, Piazza wasn't much of a cather behind the plate, but displayed awesome power as a batter. Pedro was a little controversial at times, but one of the finest pitchers of his era.

    I seriously think the baseball beefs are the best. It might be that they play with or against their beef partners so many more times than the other sports that there just more opportunities to have confrontations. Plus, fighting is somewhat normal and baseball is probably the most frustrating sport to play that pits opponents against each other (so golf is excluded).

    I mean, you can kind of understand why piazza might feel attacked by dominican players given the whole training camp thing and then multiple dominican pitchers hitting him on separate occasions. Whether it was true or not is a different thing, but you can see his perspective.
