    from someone that gets easily 200 fps on a 144hz monitor: it's night and day, quite literally.
    before i thought it was kind of a waste of money, but then I gave it a shot.
    my aim is kinda okay, so when i switched i literally started getting double the kills, from 3--4 each game to 7--8 - also I believe corridor digital showed a study that human eyes don't have a specific frame rate, it's adaptative to focus, but if it was a camera it'd be around 500 fps. so it's definitely notable.

    recently played apex in 60hz down from 240hz. The things main things i noticed were higher input delay on 60hz, and definetly harder to spot people at a distance, almost felt blind.
    My aim was still consistant and I was even hitting some shots I normally wouldnt hit. I almost feel like you can predict enemies movements better?
    However once you try 144 or 240hz monitors theres is absolutely no going back.
    I highly encourage everyone to buy a 144hz monitor (if your hardware can support it) because it is such a treat to your eyes and to play on.

    1:26 - Well, there's a margin at what point image-tearing actually happens, though. - I don't know if it's an exact point or number or whatever, but it's when the framerate is off a certain amount compared to the monitor's refresh-rate. For example, I know that with my 75Hz, whenever the framerate would drop down to... I guess below 45 or something, tearing would accur, as well as when the framerate was a similar amount above it. So it could be like 25-30fps below and above it before it starts to happen. - It basically just means that it's "out of sync" too much for the image to be displayed properly. - I don't know if it's the same kind of margin at much higher refresh-rates or if it's tighter or larger or what, but yea. You generally want to sit near the refresh-rate and not go over or below too much if you want to avoid image-tearing.

    This is such a big and technical topic that can't be really easily explained if someone doesn't know how frames work, vysnc, hertz, frames, frame buffer windows. In short, if you have low end specs, buy a high hertz monitor and play with no vertical sync and cap your frame rate to atleast 60 or higher, (slightly lower than your avg framerate). This gives no screen tearing and better input latency

    I'd love your thoughts: I have a 165hz monitor but my computer specs are pretty mid tier so I can't get a high frame rate on apex without using the adaptive resolution setting. I usually play with it set to 100 but do you think it would be worth to just set it lower so my game looks crisp? It just makes things so blurry but 60 frames feels so choppy on my screen. I just want to have consistent frames at whatever rate so I can have consistent gameplay. (fyi I play a lot of valorant as well and can get 165+ frames consistently so I found the monitor upgrade worth it; apex is the only game that I play where I struggle with consistent frames).

  • @Dan-dv8cy

    Everybody thinks higher fps is about a smoother image and seeing more frames but the real benefit from it is less input lag, you feel more connected to the game and its this that improves your aim and makes you perform better. People focus on the wrong things, most people playing high fps have screen tearing etc etc this looks bad but it doesn't matter because the game feels better to play.

    By the way, speaking from a graphics engine standpoint and doing software engineering. FPS in game and Hertz have been decoupled for a long time.
    What you really need to look at is maximum, minimum, and average frame rate delay, that's right, I said delay. That is how long it will at said frames per second before it changes. Also, the higher the delay the less likely you are to see your opponent. Now, this is not just your monitor, this is your card. Turning down the settings, while it does help the delay to a certain degree, it doesn't actually help too much because of the way the operating system, the video and network drivers work, as well as your graphics card and monitor. There's a lot more complexity to this question than people realize.
    People don't under what Hertz on a progressive scan monitor actually means, it's different than the older standard called, interlace.
    The other thing that screws you up is hitting peaks and valleys, going up and down in the frame rate when your delay is fast in one direction but slow in another, this is actually what causes the simulator sickness (like motion sickness but much worse). It's a sudden increase in delay that causes your frame rate to plummet and stay down there, which is when you get sick.

I ended up returning the 144hz monitor and staying with my current setup. Wondering if cables have a factor to play with the FPS performance?

      You need to be able to hold 144fps 24/7 to feel the benefit of 144hz. If your computer cannot do that, there is no need to purchase a 144hz monitor as you are not able to sustain the frames hence why you do not feel a marginal difference between what is probably more closer to 60-100fps (im sure your fps fluctuates through fights if its barely holding 100fps to begin with) which in a lot situations could cause even MORE screen tearing than if you were just playing on a 60hz capped monitor. So like you said, it could have ultimately been worse off for you than vs a 60hz due to your computer only being able to push ~100fps.

    • @WisdomPowerCourage
      @WisdomPowerCourage 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henlolneh No, there is a positive difference in both input lag and smoothness of image. Yes, screen tear might be an issue, but you do indeed notice a difference switching from 60hz to 144hz, even if your fps is not high enough. But it's not OPTIMAL, like he explains in the video.

    So for imo Apex it's better to cap FPS at like 190

    My current monitor goes max 75Hz, GPU is a Radeon RX570 (4GB), 8GB RAM and my best ping is 50, though ingame it usually rises to 75.
    When I play my fps matches the monitor 75Hz and my ping. So everything is about 75.
    Do you think that changing to a 144Hz monitor will make a big difference considering the other things?

    • @iancarlofernandez1206
      @iancarlofernandez1206 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kind of, a gaming monitor would have a 1 ms response time for competitive advantage. I tried this with my dual monitor setup, my primary is a 240hz msi mag251rx and another regular msi ips 60hz, i set the game on 60 fps to test and even though it wasnt as smooth i could notice the ‘instant-ness’ on my gaming monitor its just responsive, but that’s it. If you want to fully experience a smoother gaming you should have an average of 144 fps. Ping doesn’t matter in refresh rates but the game it self so those two things are different.

    A comparison with basketball shoes is not even close, as the owner of 144hz display I can guarantee you will get better with 144hz monitor assuming you can dish out 144fps with your PC (even 120 is totally enough), in a few attempts I tried going back to 60 or 75 just for the heck of it, it's like what I would describe playing on 20-25fps would look like, it's not possible to go back, it looks and feels unplayable {i.e. when you do 180° or 360° turn with your mouse, you can clearly feel you missed half the images ( you didn't see half of the transition) it's a feeling of losing the image hence why the 20-25fps comparison}.

  • @reinerheiner1148

    Actually, casual gamers will get better with more fps. The better gamer you are, the less important high fps will get (to a point) compared to the casual gamer because the brain of an experienced gamer can more easily fill in the blanks in between frames. The causal gamer is less capable to predict what happens between frames. This translates to slower reaction times and worse tracking. This means: the casual gamer will get a strong improvement with more fps, compared to lower fps. The experienced gamer will also get an improvement with more fps, but it will be much smaller compared to lower fps. Linus did a video on this. Basically, the casual gamer can narrow the skill gap significantly with a higher fps rig.

    People are always on about "the competitive edge", but I think that's just brainwashing by... the gaming-culture, or whatever you wanna call it. - SURE, response-time (as in, everything altogether, from system-performance to monitor performance and peripheral-input and the player) is helpful. The smoother and more responsive everything is, the nicer and more direct the experience and performance are. - However, I've topped leaderboards back in the days of Pentium 4, or actually when a lot of people already moved to the Core 2 generation, playing with an average of like 45fps. It just doesn't really matter if you just play well (and I'm not that exceptional). Besides, you learn to deal with whatever your hardware does and compensate for it. Like... I would just look "through" the blur or just use the image and camera in certain ways. A lot of it is by feel and it doesn't really matter what you see.
    But just to add what I think about refresh-rate, is that it's important to tighten up the image. Meaning, they speak of reducing motion-blur, which it does, because the image literally refresher faster. That doesn't necessarily mean that it makes YOU faster, it just means that you get a clearer and tighter image to respond to. But again, I used to just "look through that" by lack of choice and played by feel. - Of course, like I said, many are here from the "competitive" angle, but I play a lot more "casual" stuff than online competitive stuff, like city-builders and things like that. And even when you just pan the image across a map, at even 60-75Hz it can become this trailing blur that makes it so you can't exactly make out everything. It can be a little headache-inducing when you move around a lot, and in a way it might even be worse than for games full of action. So moving up to something like 120Hz+ would make for a more coherent image in motion. But then I'm also very much about quality. So where competitive players might want to go like 240Hz+ with 1080p, MAYBE 1440p, I "settle" for 1440p to 1620p at 60-120Hz for the eye-candy. But if I can run thát, I can probably also run the more competitive games at higher framerates, as they tend to be made lighter on a system.
    So, that's just another way to view it. And let's be real: If you just play competitive games at home, don't worry about all these number so much and just get it to run smoothly to what FEELS comfortable and just play well and enjoy it. Don't sit there nitpicking over "oh no, it just dropped from 144 to 100 for a sec" or whatever, cause it doesn't really matter, you're only gonna be distracted and bothered over your PC's performance instead of your own.

    The answer is obvious, why would people even question that? Pc gaming has one of the most unbalance games purely because theres people that play on 240 hz with a 3000 dollars PC meanwhile my case i play on integrated graphics and people expect fair 1 v 1s when in fact im playing at a disadvantage, sadly people wont know or wont care if you are at a disadvantage they will take it as granteed that you are just worse when in fact that HZ or Fps made them win that if you were playin gon the same ground, same everything you would win, and thats a case ive always been struggling with and people with good Pcs and srt ups will never acknowledge but people that people on budget set ups and Pcs will feel and understand because its obvious that the disadvantage gap is incredibly big
