I would have had Nick Fury working with Diamondback, USAgent (who was paralyzed during the nineties fight a crazed prototype Captain America called Protocide) Hiram Ridley (sarcastic Computer hacker covering Freedom Force’s tracks, and DumDum Duggan. Those would have been Nick Fury’s new Howlers, however Nick Fury and DumDum would have been surrounded by people that operated by using unethical means (USAgent), and methods (Diamondback, Ram Ridley) to wage war, with no hill to be taken, and no clean victory to be had. Nick Fury & The Howling Commandos were one of my favorite Marvel Comics in the 1960s... alongside the Incredible Hulk.. Fantastic Four... Avengers..X Men..& of course Spider Man...I loved the back history of Nick Fury & how he went on to become the leader of SHIELD.. including the explanation of how Fury never aged due to the Infinity Formula! Anyways great video brother.. looking forward to more of your Marvel Comics histories 👑
However the sad part was all of Nick Fury’s comrades turned out to be LMDs (some of them didn’t really know they were LMDs {see: DumDum Duggan, and Val DeFontaine})
Late 60's and early 70's I never missed Sgt Fury,Sgt Rock, Ghost Rider or the Rawhide Kid. It was truly a different world than today. A glance into the concept of right and wrong with detours into the supernatural. Not all of our heroes had superpowers and that helped keep us grounded to some degree.
WELL DONE! I wish The MCU had kept the Howling Commandos the way the cannon had them as! MCU really dropped the ball on this one. Great job on telling us the history of Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos!
They dropped the ball on nick fury making him a pencil pushing desk jockey saved by women .. that had loose spy ties.. get out of here m she u .. i want Stan Lee's writing how they are not you perception of his ideas .. boo m she u 😂😂😂😂
Thank you so much man. I’ve always loved the commandos. Seeing them age was a kick in the gut. No one ever ages in Marvel except their soldiers it seems. Bro don’t I know it
I really enjoy this video because this team of amazing men shows that you don't need masks or powers to be a hero. Hopefully in the future this channel can show more other WWII stories that were shown in Marvel comic books.
Waaaaahooooo! Great presentation! I think “editor’s notes” would be helpful in pointing out the series and issue you get each nugget of information from.
One of my favourite parts of John Byrne's Batman/Captain America teamup series during the war was a teamup between the Howlers and Sgt Rock's Easy Company. Comics' greatest war heroes, together in one adventure! Even though it was only a few panels, it was great.
Sargent FURRY, MARVEL, and Sargent ROCK DC. I often read them at barbershops in the 60s. So many tales of WW2 existed on TV. , Movies, news stories, magazines and comic books.😊
Hello there Merry Marvelite and fellow community members. First, I just wanted to say that I do hope that everyone has had or is having a wonderful holiday season. Second, I just wanted to say that this new video was absolutely awesome and the information that came out of it was just fantastic. Definitely a great piece of marvelous history on this day, when Mr. Marvel, himself was born. Hope that everyone in this great community has a terrific new year and may it be bright for all. Until next, Peace Out. Plus Ultra And Above All Excelsior.
Oh those Dick Ayers penciled /John Severin inked pages take me back (That’s how it is credited but really it is more like Ayers layouts and Severin’s finishes. John Severin’s style comes through so strongly, even over Ayers’ Kirby-esque poses). That era of the Howling Commandos is the one I remember most. That’s when I started reading my older cousins collection and recognized his style from the old EC comics my uncle had.
I first discovered Severin from his work in Cracked magazine, and imprinted on it. Seeing his panels in this video makes me wonder why he seems to have been largely forgotten. He was a master of composition and expression, and while quite realistic, his work was never fussy or stiff. He really was a masterful draftsman and storyteller.
I see the term LMDs in the comments. Could someone clue me in on what that means? I loved the Howling Commandos back in the 60s, but quit reading comics in the 70s after I got married. These deep dives helped me catch up on the stories and I salute you for the time and effort you put into putting this together. I subbed.
LMDs didn't come into play until the SHIELD days but the term stands for Life Model Decoys. They were lifelike robots that were most often used, as the name implies, as decoys.
As i remember Dino Manelli was killed by a german sniper at Treblinka. That was in one of the comics i had as a kid. I dont know how that was changed. Lol. Im 68 now. Loved the Howling Commandos and Nick Fury.
Imagine my confusion when I learned that Samuel L. Jackson became Nick Fury in films. Huh? Then I learned that in an alternate universe Marvel had made a switch. Okay, I thought, you can do that with comics...I guess.
I enjoyed this video alot and i can see a bunch of similarities with another WW2 unit from a completely different comic book company.....SGT Rock and Easy Company from DC Comics....and i hope that one day we will see both DC and Marvel Comics collaborate again and have both SGT Rock and Easy Company join SGT Fury and the Howling Commandos on a mission where it pushes both teams to the limit to where they feel that they might not make it back alive to me that would be a badass story
Can you do history of the characters mentioned in this video? Are you going to do history Captain America villains just like how you did for Baron Zemo, Arnim-Zola and the Flag Smasher?
Can you do history of the Grim Reaper, Quicksilver, Devondra, Sentry, Mr Immortal, Captain Universe, Dreadknight, Deathcry, Blizzard, Starhawk, Flerken, Whirlwind, Chemistro, Whiplash, Ronan the Accuser, Mammomax, the Living Tribunal and Palibok the Power Skrull along with Avenger-X and the Protector?
All right ya goldbricks were gonna take this video fast and hard. WAHHOOOO! A group of 12 prisoners recruited into their own special military unit. Sounds like a basis for a good movie:)
Dum Dum Dugan is my favourite character ⭐ He's strong will and undoubtable Warrior fun fact he and Fury are The only Member of H.C that are still alive also Dugan is running a new H.C that's Composed of Monsters
I can only think of one other replacement not mentioned above. Can't recall his name, but I think the comic's title was called "The War Lover." The replacement wanted little more than to attack the Nazis even if it meant doing so meant the Commandos failed their mission. It's been too long and I'm too lazy to pull the comic from storage, but I think the War Lover was killed on the one and only mission he went on.
We need Nick Fury Action Figures. I'm Fudging a Nick Fury Jr ' NEW' Howling Commando's with Alternates, Valaverse, etc., as was one of the Original ideas for the rerelease of the G.I. Joe line. There were even ideas for Destro to appear in Agents of SHIELD comics before joining Cobra I believe. Of course Duke replaced Fury Jr.
There used to be a action figure back in the 60s called Captain Action who you could buy various costumes for including Batman, Superman Captain America one of the costumes was Nick Fury
@georgewilliams4258 I saw that in the 1960s, but I was pretty much out of toys by then. Plus, those were 12" Figures. Not exactly compatible with 6" Figures.
Can you do history of the Beyonder, Crossfire, Living Laser, Iron Monger, Titanium Man, Crimson Dynamo, Whiplash, Ultimo, Darkhawk, Reptil, Kid-Kaiju, Union Jack, Psycho-Man, the Badoon and the Broods?
Can you do history of the A-Force, Frightful Four, Excalibur team, the Ultimates team, Serpent Society, Fraternity of Raptors, the Annihilators, the Invaders, the Squadron Supreme, Doom Maidens, the Midnight_Sons, Young Avengers, Dark Avengers, Masters of Evil, the Thunderbolts and the Champions?
Wow!! Didn't know that they had lots of adventures. So they were the ones that first fought Zemo and Strucker. Disappointing that they didn't fight along side James Howlet who would become Wolverine.
Can you do history of the Brood, the Living Monolith, Hyperion, Star-Splendor, Plasma, Hisako Ichiki Armor, Jackal, Stingray, Avril Kincaid Quasar, Orb, Squirrel_Girl, Ultimus, Kly'bn, Kitty Pryde, Yotat, Dr.Faustus, Omega the Unknown and Tryco Slatterus the Champion of the Universal?
How many of you remember the Ultimate Spider-Man TV Show where the Legion of Monsters called themselves the Howling Commandos? Can you do history of the Legion of Monsters?
As a 12 year old nobody was cooler than SGT ROCK of DC COMICS. His only equal came along with SGT FURY OF MARVEL COMIICS. This was when they cost 10 cents or 12 cents apiece.
In Volume 1, #18: Nick has been trying to work up the nerve to propose marriage to his Red Cross nurse girlfriend, Englishwoman Pamela Hawley. Fury has even purchased a diamond ring to offer Pamela during his proposal but the missions prevented him from going through with it. When Nick and his commandos at last return to England, Fury learns that Pamela was killed in an air raid while they were gone. He walks away from her father dropping the diamond ring on the ground. It's something few remember.
I definitely remember that the Movie Dirty Dozen was popular and then they assembled Dugans Dirty Dozen. Samuel L. Jackson is a great actor. But we grew up with Nick who was white and one of his closest buddies was Jones from Harlem. A minority in an elite unit. Fans like myself didn't understand. But alot of the WW2 comics were done with. Nick did get some sort of special power to live longer. So I knew about SHIELD. So I never followed that Canon. So Samuel L. Jackson doesn't have to worry about being the leader of the Howling Commandos.
How long till you finish doing White Tiger : Legacy of the Tiger by doing the history of Ava Ayala White Tiger who's the daughter of Hector Ayala White Tiger? Can you do history of Intelligencia in honor of the She-Hulk Disney Plus show?
I love Sgt. Fury, Sgt. Rock and The Haunted Tank when I was a kid in the 1970's.😊
Wasn't the Haunted Tank a D.C product ?
@j3lny425 yes. As well as Sgt. Rock. The series was called 'Our Army at War'.
Gunner, Sarge and Pooch!
In the late 60s, as a preteen, I used to buy and enjoy the Howling Commandos comics.
