@@thevintagewargamer He only knew enough to really base coat, wash, and highlight following the color wheel, and he is able to thin his paints correctly. I think his "before" minis show that pretty well in the different texture and application of the painting. And, like they said, his light placement existed but didn't show understanding. This is a huge leap if you know what you're looking at.
Exactly what I was thinking. He’s not a noob. It would be more fun to do it with a true noob and maybe not get them to Golden Demon standard but how far can you go in a week
I think it would be more impressive if you take 52 yr like me, that has never painted a mini or even put one together. And see what could be achieved in 2 weeks. Always wanted to try but been too daunted by my expectations. Love watching your videos even if I do not partake in the hobby.
Dont let your expectations hinder you from having fun! I reccomend you just build a mini up and give it a simple paintjob. If you have watched a bunch of those tutorias, you will do fine. :)
Not just a decent mini painter already, the dude is an artist! Different medium sure, but already understands so much about colour, compositions, information, etc.
@@Twinguistics BUT i mean going from a 1 to 7 is the easy part its the 7 to 10 that top % that is a lot harder to go from. if you only base and 1 highlight, its easy to go up from there right
@@SquidmarMiniatures I literally started googling mini painting classes at the beginning of this video. You guys sound like great teachers. Online classes would be amazing
As an Australian, I really appreciate Emil taking the time at around 11:30 to show he put in the work to understand our language and dialect. It shows how much they care, thanks mate.
Calling this guy a noob is a bit of an insult to all the ACTUAL noobs watching :P Those before minis are really nicely painted, but that finished squig-riding goblin was amazing! Truly fantastic job!
His amatuer stuff didn't lookbad at all, but still good work. I mean he alredy had a good foundation, you just gave him the tools to excel and be exceptional. He felt like one of you guys.
I wonder if the video would be as attractive if it was titled "Artist with keen knowledge of colors and shading learns to transfer skills to a 3d object"
Amazingly smooth transition on the squig’s skin. Gorgeous. You two should be justly proud of yourselves for your training. One to one training is the hardest thing to do and the fact that Mitch won is testament to your skills at imparting your knowledge to others. 🤩🤩🤩
You guys are obviously good teachers. That's a huge skill to have on top of mastery of painting because you can actually help people reach your level. Good on you for sharing your talents like that.
Super cool vid. Really like seeing a real regular everyday normal guy go from above average tabletop worthy paint to eye level, well lit, cabinet level of painting. Nicely done!
Wow!! That is epic, fair play!!! You guys really knew how to nurture a beginners natural talent! I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking I wish that was me in his place. Congratulations on coming 1st.
Full send on the mustache. Keep it growing. Also damn be sick to get master class apprenticeship on painting miniatures sounds like a good stressful week. His beginner painting still looks better than my 10 hours on a mini
Do I smell a How-to course series on the horizon? If you need another armature painter to come over and do another teach them video, I guess I'll volunteer. But I can't come in the winter 🤣🤣
Guys. I love your paint style. Mine is more of an Richard grey one, using dots and lines to build the texture. But as I'm trying to change it, as i think its way better to make an army using steonger lights, what video would you recommend to instruct me to paint in your style? Also, nice moustache, my wife doesn't allow me to have one lmao.
Damm this is a gangsta video guys!! Aussie here, so cool to see Mitch go over there to you guys and see the progress with a bit more knowledge of fine detail of painting. So cool keen to see some more of these!!! 🇦🇺
Great video. Really happy for Mitch's journey and to see how he developed as a painter. I kinda wish Emil and Lukas would do a video for the average painter just to get up to his initial standard of painting. Sometimes i think the boys have the bar set too high for painting and sculpting, probably where they have the bar set for themselves which means some of their videos whilst enjoyable are hard to learn from. Most of us just want to become better painters rather than Golden Demon Winners. I'd be happy if i could paint as well as Mitch's initial pieces at the start of the video.
Super cool to see a local Melbournian step up their painting game! There were a few flaws in the final piece (the NMM on the back of the weapon arm looks really quite rough) but definitely a step up from his starter level, and snagging a win! Big ups all round, and I hope to see more stuff from Mitch soon (ArcFest is around the corner!) ;)
Started on the bigger models 😂, 40k keeper of secrets was my first mini painting, also easier to learn as you've more space and larger enviroment to play in so to say, compared to the smaller minis, highly recommend
Its so great. And gives me to want to try something better. Have not really painted for years so my first steps is to use the brush better. But really wanna master the air brush, but think its hard to find some good guides/workshops
As an Aussie. I can safely say. The Swedes definitely know how to match the Aussie sarcasm, chaotic energy & humor haha. Also. The progress Mitch made in just a week is phenomenal!.
Absolutely love the video and the progression of skill in a short period of time, What paints were used for the stormcast nmm? I love the final look Thanks 😊
1:11 an absolute beginner? Lol. That squid rider looks fantastic. Way better than most regular painters out there. He's not at a golden daemon lvl, but he was already a fantastic miniature painter. So why the lie? Why call him an absolute beginner? We can all see the dude isn't a new painter.
Hello guys. This was so cool! I was wondering, my skill level is in around the same ballpark as mitch was before your crash course. Would it be possible to see the video of all your theory or if not then order them somehow? Keep up the good work! Kind regards.
I would really love to see a version of this video done with the actual premise; taking a person who is new to fully new to mini painting, without a background in art, and seeing that process of mentorship
You ever see those video clips where a little kid cries when they see their dad after he has shaved his beard off? I kinda had the same reaction to this "situation".

I followed the links and they 404'ed.....now I am sad. Great video, go Mitch!
Apparently they've been legally approached by Lord f the Rings and forced to change company name :/ updated the link.
Damn, this dude's "before" level minis are actually pretty great in my book.
Yeah definitely not a true noob painter
Yup, call me cynical but...not a true noob in sight

Mitch is clearly not a beginner but I guess saying ‘we took a pretty good intermediate painter to more advanced very good painter’ isn’t as snappy
Yeah was about to say the same, i love squidmar and all but saying that this guy is complete begginer etc is just not true
Agreed.
@mariopetovar6359 hearing him call that dude a complete beginner and then seeing his minis waaay better then I did on my last minis hurt :p
gotta bait those clicks, i guess?
Not just a decent mini painter already, the dude is an artist! Different medium sure, but already understands so much about colour, compositions, information, etc.
Now Emil needs to fly to Australia to learn how to tattoo from Mitch
Haha yes!
Why is this video super encouraging but also disencouraging at the same time ... His before level was already pretty damn good
Exactly my feeling. You nailed it. The way they talk about his before work is ouch, wonder what they'd say about mine 😢
Yeah I’d love to see them do this with someone who hasn’t actually painted before.
@@Twinguistics BUT i mean going from a 1 to 7 is the easy part its the 7 to 10 that top % that is a lot harder to go from. if you only base and 1 highlight, its easy to go up from there right
@@HerbaceousM8Yeah, definitely pretty hard to breach that intermediate level.
I would argue that calling a tattoo artist who can paint minis like that a “noob” is a big stretch 😂
But they said noob at miniature painting, not art in general.
I just love that "absolute noob" means a pretty decent painter who is an artist by trade
I had to watch it twice. One for the painting and 1 for the moustache. 😂
His before minis are extremely above average, I’d love to see what you could do with someone who’s literally never touched a brush to a mini before.
“Absolute beginner”. - professional artist of arguably the hardest medium ever to exist
I was thinking the same thing. His “before” look better than 90% of what commission painters do.
Not music? Where sometimes dosents of people work together? Or filming, which is so hard that u cannot do it alone basically?
Plus he has been painting minis for a year
@@91neOnevisual physical mediums maybe 😅
@@almisteris it refering to tattooing or minis?
An online course of you teaching in a similar fashion on how to paint properly would sell like crazy.
Maybe one day!
They do have a couple Masterclass videos, the ones I remember are painting skin and NMM.

Indeed. I learned more in this video than in 6 years of painting on my own

Good to see miniature printing companies getting sponsor spot, glad to support those guys.
Great painting by Mitch! So when are Emil and Lukas learning tattoos?
Dude!! This is so encouraging as a long term artist just starting to paint miniatures! Sick man, and congratulations brother!
Love this concept: from bigger to competition winner! Please do more of these!
Awesome results 👍 I think his old minis were still cool, but you can't deny the improvements in such a short time
Congratulations Mitch!!! This was a fun video!
Awesome paint job, Mitch...with such fab inspirations from his mentors!
Mitch's starting point is better than anything ive ever painted 😭
Stunning work by Mitch! Incredible improvements so fast! Amazing talent together with the best teachers in the world!
Good work all round, Mitch obviously has the steady hand and eye for detail but the two of you must also have some excellent teaching skills.

By any chance can you share the notes you both are highlighting at 2:06 if they are about technics or color theory and this kind of stuff?
