2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE Normal Highway Merging

  • Wanted to do a video of my G4 accelerating on I-68 at normal speed. The gas pedal is about 40-50% down and it has no issue. Most videos I show you are under full acceleration which I rarely ever have to do so I thought I would do one as I normally drive. I also rarely use Sport Mode as all I notice it doing is keeping revs higher. I sometimes use Sport Mode when getting off the a steep Interstate ramp to slow me down some and give my brakes less work. Sport mode gives a little more low speed pulling but the car does fine under all my driving conditions in Regular Drive Mode.

I absolutely love my 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage SE. Don't believe the professional reviews on this car look at the consumer reports, the reviews that are coming from people who actually drive them and you'll see that 90% of the people love their car.

100% true on owner reviews. I looked at a Mirage yesterday afternoon and got inside, I was in awe at how cushiony and supportive the seats were! The car looks good too!

gasparyangahijo Yea they are surprisingly smooth. I owned a 2015 before this and 2017 is smoother and a little quieter. I love these cars. I have owned many new cars and there is just something about the Mirages I really like. Reliable cars!

I'm in the market for a new car (my current one, an older model Lancer, is on its last legs). I was thinking of investing in the newest Lancer, but I'm not sure its a good idea to get a discontinued car (no more Lancers after 2017), plus its of course more expensive.
The G4 looks similar and is cheaper, and all I care about really is the ability to pass people if I have to on the highway/freeway. I've been researching vids on the G4 and next month (November) finally gonna test drive one myself. I'm 90% sure I'm getting it. :)

gasparyangahijo I was in a Lancer at the Mitsubishi dealership several times. I really like the Lancers and they are super sharp but the G4 gives you just about all the same stuff for far less money. Plus the rear seat has a-lot more rear leg room in the G4 than the Lancer you can even compare it on Mitsubishis Website. Are you looking into the 2017 or 2018 G4. I got the top trim G4 SE which I wanted because of the features it gets of the base G4 ES. Items standard on SE are: 15 inch dark titanium alloy wheels, fog lights, heated seats, apple car play & android auto, upgraded steering wheel, semi high contrast gauge cluster, piano black interior trim, upgraded seat material, auto climate control, fast key system, push start, auto dimming rear view mirror with home link, cruise, pw, pl, pm, upgraded gear shift knob and panel and more! I paid $12,714.00 for my top trim one (window sticker msrp on mine was $18,115.00)
The room inside these is unreal and the trunk is huge compared to the hatchback. Now the rear seats don’t fold but they do give you a pass through in 2018 models and a fold down front arm rest. Since 2017s don’t come with and arm rest I had the factory oem center console arm rest installed for under $140.00 I got it. I really do love the car and all the things about it. It can easily work as a family car and is comfortable inside.
I like the 3 cylinder as I think it is unique and I love the sound of it plus they are made to run forever with very little maintenance. They have been out in other countries since 2012 with this engine and has had no major issues and has proven to be dependable.
The only time they feel a tad slow is right when they take off the first 2 seconds, it does not bother me nor do I even notice it. But if you run these cars they move really well for a 78 hrsp 3 cylinder car! Once cruising they hold 70-75 mph no issues.
Let me know what trim and year you are looking at and if you do get one! You should!

The dealership I am going to only has the 2017 models, but if the 2018 models are out I'll ask them about it or go to other dealerships in addition to that one. Thanks for all the info and yeah I'll let you know. I'm leaning toward the chepest trim (the website says ES).

Well you cant go wrong with the the Mirage. You should be able to get a good rebate on a 2017. I think the 2017 Mirage G4 has a $1,500.00 rebate now plus any dealer discounts and I think the 2017 Mirage has a $750.00 rebate. The 2018 Mirage and Mirage G4 I think is only at $500.00 now. I hope you do get one. Keep me posted on what ya chose and the color and all. Message if you have any questions!

I have had this car for 5 years now. No problems at all. It is exactly what I needed. And in those five years, it has grown on me. I think now this is the new VW Beetle type of car. Pleased to se that even 6 years after introduction the sales of this car still go up year by year. Not only in Asia, but worldwide. For Mitsubishi it is a cash cow. They keep facelifing it until sales will finaly come down.

That is awesome! I love that the Mirages sales keep going up while other subcompacts decline! The Mirages sales would be so high if people listened to the owners and not these trash talking reviewers. They are great reliable simple cars like the original Beetle was! The 2021 Mirage and Mirage G4 look great too and I love the plaid seats on the top trim 2021 Mirage SE they are sharp! I hope they continue this car for years to dome with the same engine and platform as its time teated and proven reliable.

Well done mate for a proper mature review. This is how most people should be driving. In the UK there is an obsession with torque and having to accelerate as fast as possible all the time. People really need educating. Makes you wonder how they would have managed 30 to 40 years ago before turbos were fitted. I had no problem back then in any car. People today expect every car to be fast, and I do think they have become more impatient because of it as cars today are a lot faster than they used to be. I have a turbo petrol car but I rarely go over 3000rpm. It pulls low down, I get up to the limit easily so why do I need to do it any faster ? Crazy

I guess it all depends on the driver. I never had any close calls or issues with the acceleration in my 2 Mirages. I merged on the highways and pulled out fine. Sure its a 3 cylinder but drives fine. My Mirages did 0-60 in 12 (Mirage) to 14 (Mirage G4) seconds and my new Eclipse Cross does 0-60 in just over 8 seconds. I was one of the people that looked down on the Mirage. However recently my father brought a new Outlander PHEV which gave me time to sit in and spend time playing around with a Mirage sitting next to it. Honestly it is a big upgrade from the really cheap early 2014 models and looking at how it drives it seem to be a cheap & reliable runabout. If given the chance I'll definitely go for a short test drive someday.

    • @kmckenzie2461

Trades46 I just got to look at the 2018 Outlander PHEV in the showroom the other day. They had 12 in stock and ai loved the chocolate color interior with red piping. They felt very premium inside. How does he like the PHEV?
Another one of my co workers just bought a new 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport LE AWD (making 6 of us now driving Mitsubishis at my work place). Yes I agree the 2017-2018s are much more refined and upgraded, I owned a 2015 Mirage ES with Nav and Back Up Camera before this one and I loved it but traded when the updates came out.
Yes you can beat the price on the Mirage and Mirage G4. Mines loaded with features like apple car play, heated seats, power everything, automatic climate control, push start and keyless access smart key fob, cruise, auto dimming rear view mirror with home link, alloy wheels, and much more. I also added numerous mitsubishi accessories and the center console arm rest. My MSRP was $18,115.00 and I paid $12,714.00 after rebates and dealer discounts for a top trim G4 SE at Renn Kirby Mitsubishi. They are so reliable and such an easy car to live with especially having all the neat features for cheaper than the base model!

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Loving it so far. From charging it overnight, he commutes 35 miles round trip to work (no workplace charging sadly) but about 3/4 can be done on EV mode alone. 1st week in and we're averaging ~40 MPG in 20 deg F. That's brilliant considering this is a 4200lb AWD SUV in constant freezing temperatures.
It's a shame Mitsubishi doesn't sell as well as brands like Toyota or Honda - their reliability, driving dynamics & fuel efficiency beats a lot of American brands but they don't get the respect for it.

    • @kmckenzie2461
      @kmckenzie2461  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Trades46 Damn that is impressive! The PHEV is one sharp SUV and looks expensive! Glad he is happy with it.
I am with you Mitsubishi vehicles are so reliable and run forever and come with so many features. You got it they beat many other vehicles in their classes but many auto critics like Consumer Reports just bash every aspect about them.
I will only buy Mitsubishi now and I love the Mirages and thats what I will continue to buy and our next SUV will be the Eclipse Cross when we decide to trade our 2016 Outlander Sport GT AWD. Over the next few years they are bringing out new models each year and redesigning current models as well. All of this over the next few years from what Mitsubishi says. They may even bring a pick up back to the US. I really think they are on the UP and I think their sales will continue to rise with the help of the Outlander PHEV and all new Eclipse Cross.
When I got my 2015 ES (top trim for 2015) Mirage and my 2017 Mirage G4 SE (top trim on G4 for 2017) I cross shopped it with the Chevy Spark and Nissan Versa and it won me over on price (by far), warranty, features, proven reliability, looks, and room (G4 and Versa where almost identical size wise in rear seat). So happy we chose them.
When we got our 2016 Outlander Sport GT AWD we cross shopped it with the Buick Encore, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tuscon, Honda HR-V and Toyota Rav-4. Once again we chose the Mitsubishi due to its price (undercut everyone due to dealer disc and rebates we got $6,000.00 off sticker), loaded features like Navigation and panoramic roof, more serious 4 wheel drive with Lock, styling, and warranty. Plus we would do it again we love our Outlander Sport!

joe b Oh yea. My co worker still owns her 2015 I drive each week and I loved my 2015. But driving her 2015 Mirage ES CVT to my Mirage G4 SE CVT its a noticeable difference.
The steering is much tighter and returns to center on its own on mine. Also the springs are a lil stiffer to give the car less wallow. The suspension sound over bumps is more refined, muffler and engine sound is more refined and smoother sounding as well. Another thing is the engine idle you notice a big difference in smoothness in the 2017s. Now power wise I notice no difference with the extra 4 horsepower on the 2017s. Seat materials, steering wheel, interior trim, audio head unit, gauge cluster, shifter look and feel, and the wheels are all a noticeable upgrade as well.

Yea it's smooth if the pavement is flat. It's got awful ride quality and noise compared to it's competition when the road gets a bit more rough. Also where I live some on ramps are significantly shorter than this. This wouldn't be safe for those, especially if someone is flying up in the right lane, which does happen a fair bit. Wide open road with little traffic sure this is enough but this is just one scenario. Don't get me wrong if you just need a cheap way to get around then it's respectable to get one.

Hello there. MPG was always good on my Mirage G4 SE. I get about 2 mpg better on my new 2021 Mirage SE hatch. I always got good mpg on the highway or cruising between 30 and 50 mph or even at 70 mph it would always go between 42 to 47 mpg.
Now in town I averaged low 30 mpg in my Mirage G4 SE but on my new 2021 Mirage SE hatch I am hitting in at between 34 to 37 mpg in the city and averaging around 45 mpg at highway speeds and have topped 50 mpg cruising. I use a/c constantly and always have it on, I hate being hot lol. I usually have just me or 1 other person in my car. Going from Cumberland MD to Somerset PA Zoo with 2 people in my 2021 Mirage SE I was amazed how well it did with constant long grades-hills-mountains and a/c on. No issues.
Now I can tell you in my friends 2019 Mirage G4 SE CVT we drove from Cumberland MD to Altoona PA about 1 hr 1 min drive and averaged 43 mpg going at speeds between 50 and 75 mph. That was with 4 people in the car at weights of 165 lbs, 175 lbs, 120 lbs, 135 lbs. then coming back to Cumberland we got 42 mpg.

Easy with experience. You dont need to floor any car to slot into traffic. You just learn that after 30 years of driving. Defensive not offensive techniques. If youre merging onto a highway / motorway, you just need to think about the speed of the approaching traffic. Slow down, let the truck pass and and go in behind if you cant get in front. It doesnt add anything onto your journey by holding back. I wish more drivers understood this. The roads would be safer. Too many idiots think they need lots of power when in reality, a fast car is simply disguising the fact the driver is lacking in ability and would probably blame the car for their own failings if it had low BHP. Ive had loads of small engined cars, never had any problem joining motorways or keeping up. A skilful driver can adapt to any situation no matter what car they are driving.

Seen a number of Mirage vids. Often commenters saying "how can it merge with 80mph traffic?"
This doesn't make any sense to me. Where do you live where people drive 130km/hr? Here the speed limit is 100km/hr (62mph), with most people driving just over limit at 65.
Cars will sometimes pass and cruise at 120km/hr (75mph), then later you see them pulled over on the side of the highway with the cherries flashing. For someone in such a hurry they're pretty quick to disappear in the rearview at that point.
Maybe where some people live 80mph is normal, but to me it sounds like internet hyperbole and not a genuine complaint against the car's ability.

Now my 2015 Mirage Hatch CVT was a second or so faster. They say the 5 speeds are a great deal faster 0-60. I can drive a stick but have not drove a Mirage stick since I bought my first Mirage back in 2015 when I also drove the 5 speed but went with the CVT because other people drive my car who cant drive stick. It was much peppier for sure. The CVT does sap power for sure but for most people in everyday use its not even noticeable. Also the CVT does a great job on hills holding its speed unlike automatic older small engine cars that would constantly hunt between gears on mountains. I never had any issues with either CVT Mirage getting on the highway, pulling out into traffic, and so on. It just takes a lil longer to build speed compared to say my Eclipse Cross which I clock 0-60 in 8.4 to 8.8 seconds depending.

I went from a loaded trop trim 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL Touring that was $32,245.00 that I got new in 2019 and back to this top trim 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage SE (my 3rd one) and from a 0-60 time of 8.5 secs with the turbo Eclipse Cross to a 12-13 secs 0-60 time in the Mirage and I don’t notice in day to day as most people just get in a car and go. What's the big deal about 4000 RPM? The redline is 6500 RPM, 4000 is nothing. You could run this engine all day at 4000 RPM and it wouldn't hurt a thing, though it would be somewhat noisy. Max power is produced at about 6000. All engines (not just this one) have to be revved up to produce their maximum power, and when your max power is only 78 obviously you're going to have to use it more often. You may not like that so you probably shouldn't buy this car, but that's not the same thing as saying 4000 RPM is "trouble".

How did this car pass U.S regulations. The tires are very thin and small. The less than 73HP engine is not enough for American roads. I would rather buy a used Toyota than driving this death trap.

It outperformed most of its competition in crash tests and has successfully been a staple of rental car fleets without many problems since 2012.
Doug Demuro is a soyboy, by the way.

Joe Rambo I don’t even think rental companies trust this car because I have never seen this car as a rental fleet. They are too cheap and unsafe.

      Stop exaggerating.
This is one of the slowest accelerating new cars you can buy in 2019, but there are plenty of trucks and older cars that are slower than this that people still drive every day and they manage to merge onto highways fine.
It's slow for 2019, but in the 80's this was normal acceleration. Looks at old Motorweek videos for non-sports cars. Some sporty cars back then could barely do 0-60 under 10 seconds.
What about super slow vehicles like trucks towing trailers and people driving motorhomes today? How do they ever survive without people constantly blindly ramming into them because it takes double or even triple digit seconds to get to full highway speed?

      Joe Rambo I’m not convinced.
