Bro, you’re a goldmine of info! Every video I watch I learn something new. Just took delivery of my ‘24 M340i, thanks for all the helpful videos about the b58 platform.
I had a can on my 3.5L Ecoboost. Every 5k miles it was full...it pains me to think that all of that would've been recirculated if I didn't have the can. For that reason I'll always use a can even on a PFI car. I believe you when you say the B58 runs clean enough that a can isn't needed. When I get one I might take your advice and skip a can.
Quick question not related to the video… I really want to take care of my car. After it’s sitting still for a couple days sometimes even a week, I’m scared my turbo/engine is dry because of the oil that moves to the bottom. Is it possible or necessary to start the oil pump before running the engine? And how do we do that?
👀at my catch can while in 10 degree weather running e50. Water is just everywhere at this point 😅 She is garage kept so freezing issues is less likely in my case.
Hey kern im having a code pop up and cannot get rid of it. 191C02 “Tank ventilation system 2, inlet point; malfunction” I replaced all hoses that go to the tank vent valve and the code comes and goes. Any idea where i can specifically look and investigate further.
Try replacing the fuel tank ventilation relief valve on top of the intake manifold. Costs a little more than $100. You can replace it yourself easily. Common failure point of these engines. I kept getting the same code as you on my 440i and it was giving me problems starting after filling up the tank with fuel. I replaced the valve and the code has not returned...fingers crossed
I just want to fully understand this PCV topic. So, I only need a catch can if my car is pushing oil which it shouldn't because the B58 is an efficient engine otherwise the VTA kit will be good enough? Please let me know. Thank you.
HI Kern, love your content - I have a MY 23 Supra with a B58TU(B58D I do believe), can I apply this information to my engine as well? Thanks for sharing information that the garage mechanic nerd both wants and needs
I would be interested if an OCC leads to better octane (due to filtering oily air). For example, if you do not have access to ethanol, but an OCC would lead to let‘s say 0.5 degrees more timing (or less timing pull) with pump fuel only, then it would be an advantage.
I will say I have one and it does run very clean, my can is dry, but I still want to delete it, there’s so much conflicting info on this for b58 for some reason even from the parts companies
What do you think about vtt crankcase breather to avoid excess presssure in crankcase. I'm planning to mount hybrid turbo and give more boost to my engine.
Kern have you ever ran Xhp Stage 3 using stock shift points? BMW reflashed the stock TCU tune during a service and i find comfort mode is now alot better than it was with Xhp flashed, i believe this is due to how fast it gets to 8th gear in comfort with Xhp? Stock Tune is so much more responsive!
Dang it this video was a day late for me haha. I was just asking Matt which route to take with the G30540. I run his billet cap and rubber diaphragm. Purchased the Bms occ for the low side hoping for peace of mind in case of blow by with catless and mhd flex on e40. Rethinking my choice now being in Chicago winters.
It is my recommendation to always run an OCC. Just check it regularly and it will be good. I have owned my car since 2017 and rocked the bms OCC from 2017 until 2021 and I have never had issues with the lines freezing or bursting. I've had my PCV Delete OCC kit since 2021-present and again zero issues. This has also never been an issue ever reported to me with over 1000 OCC kits sold across the world including Canada, Poland, UK, Ukraine, etc and other northern countries that see cold winters. What is mentioned in this video is more theoretical vs real world imo. BMS uses 3-5ply silicone lines and my kit uses steel braided lines. There is not enough pressure in an OCC setup in which either of those hoses would fail. Also keep in mind that the great in the engine bay should melt anything frozen. Final part is that the mixture is usual fuel, oil, etc which are not going to easily freeze Check your OCC every few weeks to ensure it doesn't overfill and you shouldn't have an issue
The important thing here that I think Kevin is really hinting at is, if you're going to run an OCC, especially a standard highside OCC like the BMS one then you should be checking your OCC regularly because yes, it out gets full from lack of maintenance on your end then you could have issues that he mentioned in video. Personally I never had my OCC overflow but I checked both models regularly, especially the winter months!
@@rossrperformance I appreciate the insight as always man from you and Kern. I also should state that if I did not purchase the Bms occ I was going to purchase your (RossRacing) pcv delete to dump tube.
If you are running a catch can that maintains the OEM connection with the heater would that cover the freezing variable? I am in the and found out the hard way regarding condensation and too full of a catch can. My main concern is I have the PCV and seeing the oil amount in the catch can currently me worry about what would be recirculated without a can. I am coming from a Boosted VQ platform and had that catch can and it made a MESS with condensation coming out of the breathers.
Hey Kern Could not running a pcv delete affect timing? I have a hybrid turbo running 25 psi (ultraflow) I don’t find any oil on the turbo inlet and the turbo entrance looks nice and clean
This might be a dumb question but, Im about to put in my GC turbo. I have a Stage 2 tune (MHD) now. When i install the new turbo, is it fine to keep the regular stage 2 map or do i NEED to get a different tune ASAP. Or Can i just flash it back to stock until im ready to get a custom tune?
since you deleted the PCV and fuel EVAP do you just install it back for emissions? trying to see if i'm able to pass emissions with a unlocked DME flash tune.
I don't have emissions testing where i live, but you can pass with a pcv delete if you keep the vent tube plugged in like ross Racing does. Evap delete won't pass
the catch can is the air cleaner. and it will vent air with or without vacuum pulling the air out because positive pressure is built up in the crankcase.
From what I took from this video, in my situation where Im in Florida and it doesnt get hot, and I have the occ that vents out to the atmosphere, I dont really have to worry about any of these problems correct?
I had an N54('08 335i) with upgraded turbo and that pig still didn't need a catch can. Let me rephrase; I had a catch can and it was always borderline bone dry. Not sure why some vehicles are so much worse than others with blow by and PCV issues when looking at two different cars of the same model.
Catchcans are the cold air intakes of 1997, everyone just buys it and lists it as a mod because they're "car enthusiasts"... Seldom is it needed, none of my cars
Can I leave my pcv stock? which I bought one and changed it already right from your link and my stock one was in great shape no issues just changed it anyway, and my car is a stage 1 custom tuned pushing 400 hp with no down pipe just intake from Burger motorsports, my car has warranty so scared to get a down pipe for now but please let me know if it’s ok to leave it stock since I’m only pushing 400 hp.
You can but a pcv delete is preventative maintenance. A lot of people run stock system fine but if it fails then you either wait for a dealer to fix it or wait for parts. A delete avoids problems completely
Please tell me which pcv delete to get I’m in New Jersey right now it’s 17 degrees outside please educate me on which pcv delete to buy cause I’m New Jersey of course we have change of wether.

oil never drains to the bottom. it would take weeks if not months to completely dry the engine.

HI Kern, love your content - I have a MY 23 Supra with a B58TU(B58D I do believe), can I apply this information to my engine as well? Thanks for sharing information that the garage mechanic nerd both wants and needs
Unfortunately a simple pcv delete isn't available for the b58tu, but you can still plug the head ports and run a dump tube off the valve cover
I would be interested if an OCC leads to better octane (due to filtering oily air). For example, if you do not have access to ethanol, but an OCC would lead to let‘s say 0.5 degrees more timing (or less timing pull) with pump fuel only, then it would be an advantage.
Like i said oil can dilute octane but our cars don't really push oil unless something is broken
I will say I have one and it does run very clean, my can is dry, but I still want to delete it, there’s so much conflicting info on this for b58 for some reason even from the parts companies
What happens if you upgrade to a hybrid turbo and can't use the pcv heater anymore (B58TU)? Would you have to use a catch can then? Please answer

also do you have a video showing how to set up the dump tube setup

Does it sound crazy to want to route the atmosphere line to that second o2 hole in that dp so that there isn’t all that build up on the underbody 🤔?
You mean run it to your exhaust so it can always pull a vacuum like oem, without rerouting it to your intake? 😏
Bro gave us the death stare 😂😂😂
What is the best way to vent b58tu engine. We don’t have a good catch can system because of the changes to the valve cover itself

Pcv delete >>> just a catch can
For a b58tu, what do you think the max horsepower is before I would have to upgrade my motor and transmission? The goal is to make it 600 hp daily.
I've made videos on both the engine and transmission limits. 600/600 is a great place to be

a catch can works in theory if the air is cleaned and vacuum is maintained right?
the catch can is the air cleaner. and it will vent air with or without vacuum pulling the air out because positive pressure is built up in the crankcase.
