I'm at 38k miles in my 2020 440i. Service intervals of spark plugs, oil, filters and coolant change is all I did so far. Car runs like a champ. I believe these engines will be sought after in the used market years from now. Great video Kern.
@saulmanzo3993 I drive like I stole it. Just did the transfer case fluid, rear brakes and rotors. Ditching the run flats helped too. The 440 is a good all around daily that doesn't beat you up over bumps and potholes.
I looked up on consumer reports and found the 2016-18 340i is all green for reliability. That surprised me actually. Very few cars are all green on consumer reports.
The B58 is literally the most reliable high performance engine on the market. One could argue the S58 is right up there. Either way, BMW engineers have really outdone themselves 👍🏻
First BMW for me and at 42k miles I have experienced a water pump leak and broken threads on the large plastic radiator cap . Not sure where those pieces are.. sigh.... Going to change out all the plastic parts now before anything else breaks. Not an issue since I do my own work but the plastic parts problem is not reassuring.
Thanks to my Supra, I am now in the market for an X5 and the biggest reason is the B58. That might have been BMW’s plan when they collaborated with Toyota, it worked for me 🤣

As a previous owner of 3 I-6 BMWs (both M and N series engines) all with over 120k miles, has BMW changed the material they make their gaskets from? Other than the plastic coolant lines that you did mention, my number one complaint about BMWs was the material selection of the sealing gaskets in the engines. After 80k miles or 6 years, the gasket material becomes very brittle, like glass. Once this starts you will have oil leaks and be replacing these gaskets (oil stand, valve cover, oil pan, rear main seal etc.) on a regular basis for the life of your vehicle. For comparison I also own a 1998 Corvette. It's now 26 years old with more mileage than an of my BMWs, and has never had a leak. My wife owned a 2008 Yukon XL with >230k miles and no oil leaks. For the price of BMWs and their level of engineering they should have better material selection. I really hope they have resolved this for Toyota's sake because if Supra owners start showing up with oil leaks in the next two years, it's not going to be good for their reputation either.
Agreed. "For the price of BMWs and their level of engineering they should have better material selection.". Unfortunately, they do it on purpose. Michelin AS3
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought when the car runs the oil runs through the engine better keeping it from overheating?
By “car run” I mean drive
@@mitch8920 I'm not sure what you're asking
I have an Ineos Grenadiere on order that has the B58 but doesn’t offer any shop repair manuals does anyone know how I can buy them?
pity diesels are demonized in Murica cos the B57 diesel is a much-respected engine in Europe/Asia!
thanks for this
you're welcome. thanks for watching.
Chemical guys leather cleaner takes away that shine on the steering wheel. It'll look matte and fresh like new-it happens when you ur hand oils get absorbed by the leather
So you think a 2020 x4 m40i around 50k used is a good buy? I got a 2011 328i with 125k and I’m ready to get rid of it
sure
i was thinking of picking up a higher mileage car, 100k miles at 18k great service record am i crazy if get it ?
18k sounds like a great deal to me. i'm assuming it's base so not msport etc?
Hello Kern, i just bought 22’ 840i Xdrive 20k miles b58C if im not wrong,2 port one
Since its heavy, what would you recommend me? Il do bench unlock and bm3 stage 2 with 200cell downpipe, i was told il get around 500hp at the crank.
Is it possible i use ethanol mix on the weekends, and gain 570-600 hp on the crank?
Since we dont have it on gas stations, i would buy it online, e85. And i guess i need a map for ethanol?
I would buy pureturbo 800 straight away but im affraid i wont like big turbo gap it has.. is it really dead at low rpm compared to stock turbo?
Thanks…😊
just depends on your goals. stage 2 works very well and even better with ethanol. you can also get a meth injection kit and that will work well with a pure800. the turbo lag is not that bad.
@@kern417well, i dont have goals as “times” goals.. dont care 1/4 mile etc, since its not a car for that.. i just want it to be powerfull enough for its weight, i guess thats around 550-580hp minimum to consider it fast
Then yes a pure800 should be able to get you to 550 with a custom tune
Bro please need help and advice on my check engine light:
Went to AutoZone and got to find out that CANISTER PURGE VALVE needs to fixed. P0446 & P0440 codes. What should i replace here?
I am on stage 2 mhd intake, cateless DP, charge pipe
Scan with mhd to get the bmw code
I have a 2019 F36 440i xDrive 70K mileage and I asked my dealership if I should flush my transmission oil and replace filter and i was told no need as this is not required...whats your thoughts?
Boi if u don’t do it
Thats the official response from BMW "all our ZF8 gearboxes are free maintenance lifetime" well, thats not true. ZF mnufacturer recomends you to replace oil of the gearbx around 80k to 100k km.
Don’t flush. Just drain and refill. You’re at the right mileage to do it.
Don't listen to the dealership, I literally dropped off my 2018 340i at the shop today for a transmission and differential fluid change and coolant flush. ZF who is the actual company that makes the transmission says to change the fluid between 60k-80k. Look up FCP Euro ZF8 trans service kit.
At 100k the dealership quoted me $2,000 to change the transmission fluid. Yes, TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS.
Thank you, sir.
Do you really have 10.000 miles oil change interval for the B58 in the US ?
yep
@@kern417 wow.
In Europe ist 30.000km which is like 18.600 miles (CBS)
Why do US have shorter intervals ?
@@vollcare4076 not sure but I've heard that before. But i thought it was closer to 15-20k
@@kern417 usually CBS asks for oil change at around 27-32k Km in Europe (B58), that’s 18000-19000 miles ca
Europe has better gasoline
No they aren’t reliable cause bmw cost a lot of money for repairs in general
My 2018 B58 just leaked😂
Saw your shinny steering wheel bro. All I can say is; geist steering wheel restoration kit. HTH
If I remember like bmw and Toyota worked together on the engine to make it wht it is now so for the simple fact Toyota was apart of the recreation tells you it had no choice but to be reliable 😂
The newest turbo v6 from Toyota is proof this is not necessarily true.
The cooling system on this engine is junk
your steering wheel is pretty shiny ..
Thank you

4:56 Being at idle means you're putting wear on your engine, but the car is not moving forward. You are wasting engine life. You are wrong. Idle is bad for the engine.
What lmao
So a motor will live longer under stress than no stress. My diesel generator would like to have a word with you.
jesus, I hope you in the last 6 months you cleaned up that plastic looking steering wheel. I haven't seen a wheel looking that bad in a while.
