Another great test- thanks Joe! Here's what I think.....My Ontario SP10 Marine Raider Bowie weighs 22.5oz without the sheath. My Ontario SP5 Survival Bowie weighs 14.9oz without the sheath. Assuming the metal guard on the SP Raider Bowie weighs 3-4oz, this means the SP10 has an additional 3-4 ounces of steel in its sabre grind blade, which goes all the way to the tip. I think this explains why the SP5 with its weaker full flat grind is not as strong as the SP10. Still, the tip did great puncturing the metal and on the basic stab tests into the stump. But with the the long 10" blade and thinner stock, it was not going to survive the harder tests. Overall though, I still think it's a great budget US made survival knife that will hold up well to batoning with the way the steel flexes without easily breaking. My older 1095 version has held up to some really harsh field use without any problems. Regards, John

It’s never failed me in 35 years (non recycled 440C from the late 1980’s) , but the TPE type handle molded over a real, non skeletonized full tang with the back of the spine exposed is starting to tear from dry rot. So it’s time to make wood scales (or wrap it in tennis tape) for it and pass it down to my kid that doesn’t mind carrying the weight of it. It’s a lot heavier than the SP5. I have an old 1095 version and the newer 1075 version like what Joe tested. I do think the older 1095 blades had better steel and heat treatments. However, the SP5 is a full flat grind and it is really long at 10". It is also a pretty light blade despite how large it looks. I think it did really well overall compared most of the other large fixed blades knives Joe's tested. That flex that Joe showed with it is why it batons logs so well without breaking. That's a sign of a good heat treat.
Very pleased with its performance. Never expected it to hold up like the sp10 but the question was how much weaker was it. Turns out not all that much.
I’d be interested to see you test the SP50 but it is discontinued so most people won’t be able to buy it for much longer, BUT it has been largely replaced by the Ontario Bushcraft Woodsman in 420HC stainless and this is still in production, it has the same blade length and geometry as the SP50 has. Every review I found of the SP50 gave it a very high rating for use in chopping and batoning through wood, I couldn’t find any reviews of it failing, meanwhile similar knives made by Ontario were turning out to be junk, they seem to have had very inconsistent heat treatments or something 🤷🏻♂️ but yea the Ontario Bushcraft Woodsman is a thick long piece of 420HC and would be very interesting to see how it performs in your tests (gerber strongarm is also made of 420HC? but with a different heat treatment)
