I get the quote that knives are meant to do what they suppose to do, but knowing the limits and what the actual manufacturing factor such as the steel or the heat treatment do to its integrity is another lever of confidence and price justification! @Ifyoucanreadthisgooglebroke ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It did weirdly well for that much carbon. The shattering on bullets reveals it couldn't cheat chemistry though. Eventually it would have snapped a lot sooner than others from whacking on things. For machetes they should stick to less carbon like the 1055 and 1075 that seem to be favored by the best.

    • @joex
      @joex  ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, thanks for the info! cheers!

    • @DL-ij7tf
      @DL-ij7tf ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It never fails to amaze me how people will watch a video and come to the opposite conclusion of what they literally just watched. Obviously they don't need to stick to 1055 and 1075 as 1095 functioned "weirdly" well (I don't think there was anything weird about it). Getting shot by bullets isn't the metric you should use to select blade steel any more than you should select a phone based on how well it takes bullet hits.

    • @Ifyoucanreadthisgooglebroke
      @Ifyoucanreadthisgooglebroke ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Obviously it did well. Obviously nobody is choosing a machete for it's ability to be shot at. 1095 is an uncommon choice for something full machete sized, and the limit this hit compared to others served to indicate that.
      What I left implied and maybe shouldn't have was that they made it work by ironically running it softer than the ones in lower carbon. This is precisely one of the kinds of demonstrations Joe's videos are interesting for from a material performance standpoint. It is possible to do something a bit unusual in steel choice and get success. But it tends to come with limitations that are best avoided. There is no pretending this did as well as the 1055 machetes, after all.
      If you watch other Joe videos or various other steel tests in general then something you will see is that this degree of durability in 1095 is rare. For a particular good example, contrast with the much shorter (an advantage by geometry) ESEE Junglas that Joe tested. This is caused by the lower than what is more common hardness choice. That is where the word 'weird' seemed applicable to me. They did something unusual and it worked well enough here.

      I truly believe people hear stuff online then just repeat it. Tramontina are ok but they are very thin.

    • @MB-jg4tr
      @MB-jg4tr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@richardhenry1969 they are supposed to be thin. They are much more lightweight and easier to handle for longer periods, and cut through most materials easier with steel that's more forgiving on the user. People that actually use machetes a lot, prefer thinner lighter ones, and usually blades with less height. I use them a lot, and I've used many other styles. Most heavier thicker machetes are designed for cutting bigger hardwood branches, a task that is actually really what you should use an axe for. This Ontario is a Military design made to be very stout and take a lot of abuse, but it's absolutely not what someone that uses machetes a lot would want as it's thickness and weight would make jobs much more difficult than they need to be. Plus military gear often isn't ideal, but contracted to the lowest bidder, and this one being overbuilt because it's being given to people with little or no experience using them. It will tire you out and stress your muscles a lot. This is obvious to anyone who actually uses these tools. Like the Brazilians who use Tramontina. The work of a machete should be done with the machete, not brute strength. It's the quick speed attained with a thin light blade, the wrist flicking technique, and accuracy, that makes a good machete easy to use, not human strength or overbuilt BS. Think again buddy.

      @@joex maybe, but ive handled many of the lasher tools products (lasher is the south african company producing the cold steel products) and their quality control is very poor, from batch to batch the hardness and steel quality is inconsistant, they have a poor reputation in southern africa for being cheap and not always well hardened but very affordable but better thsn chibese machetes and having strong hsndles, the british martindale is the gold standard with machetes as its forged with a taper and well hardened of quslity steel, but the lasher is 1/2 the price and a chinese made machette is 1/4 another south african maker is okapi, they are similar to the lasher products.. Youll get 10 or 15 which dont roll the edge and then one that does (on hard dry wood) quenching thin blades like this uses a special machine, it is like a rotating wheel or drum that grabs the blades out of the furnace and holding them taught quenches in toil then grabs the next. If this is not done properly the blades.. (2mm or less in thickness) can cool at the edge below the quench temperature and you canhave a blade that has some softer spots, you wont see it in bend testing. It might be 1 cm or so around the profile, . If the price is higher these would be rejected, but if the machette is 1 dollar or so wholesale it is considered a byproduct of the price.. Heating and quenching such large thin blades is complex and the jig that holds them sucks heat from the blade every second they touch it. The edges lose heat first.. Generally it is a problem you will only norice when you use the machete day in and day ou but local users grade the machete brands on quality, the chinese dont produce any forged machetes for example and their heat treatment is inconsistant due to variable carbon in the blade and bad technique for the quench, if i was to grade mass production machetes by quality.. Martindale is the top, then maybe far below that imacasa, then incolma and then truper from mexico then tramontina and the now bankrupt corneta of brazil . Then okapi then lasher.. Then the chinese state factory "gem light" aka diamond brand.. All work, but some are superior to others, comenting as a person who knows machete business.
      In the past in africa there was also czechslovakia made machetes and polish and yugoslavian.. Later slovskian made machetes too.. made mostky during the period of communist trade and aid, these were ok.. Solidly made, much better than the south african or south and central american made or chinese products actuially.. .. Slovenia still made some in the 1990s to send to africa,
      But if you disagree, it is your right to do so.
