The knife did great given the full flat grind with a thin behind the edge geometry. The grain structure looks perfect. If you look at 1800s Sheffield bowies you will see similar geometry with thick spines and very thin behind the edge profile because the customers wanted a knife that can cut and slice well.

Not sure what's in the vest that compromised the tip in the beginning, but some have ceramic in them. Which takes diamond or carbide tools to cut or drill. Due to the high hardness of the ceramic. Which would make sense on the tip being compromised. Have you tried to penetrate that type of vest with other blades yet? Thanks for sharing. Stay safe, my friend.
Hi Joe X, please check whether the Carrothers you tested was 3V or CPM 3V - I believe Mr Carrothers has made knives out of both steels. Anyway if this Trailmaster is plain 3V that should not perform as well as CPM 3V which is powder metallurgy. Any CPM variant should perform better across the board.
@joex anyway I am sure you are pointing to real issues with the GSM product. There's no doubt about that left. Now my problem is I got into a dispute with a knifetuber who says he has a fake Espada XL to destroy. My issue being, how does he know it's fake? Dude there's no difference between 3V and cpm3v it's the same thing. It's not like 154cm and cpm-154. 3V without cpm can only refer to voltage, it's one and the same.
@jimmycricket7946 thank you, I absolutely stand corrected. As you can imagine I figured seeing 3V In certain descriptions and CPM 3V in others that there were conventional and powdered variants. @@joex You are making good money with your paid subscribers. You buy one. Not to do a destruction test. But to show that there's a difference betwen taking mousebites with the Rambutt knife, and a tool that is specifically made for the wood task, and won't weigh much on you when hiking/ultra light backpacking.
Wow! First hit on the spine! That's problematic for how pricey it is. There are *lot* of options at this pricepoint, getting close to CPK price territory, and over what one might be able to get an Ares for. I expected more from Cold Steel's treatment of 3V, and it could also be a geometry problem. Great performance...from JOE X!
Comparing the ares is not apples to apples, the bte on the ares is insane. It's over 50 thousandths. Not to mention it's overall thickness throughout the blade it doesn't taper like the trailmaster and lastly the very fine tip compared to the basically non existent tip on the ares. The geometry couldn't be any more different.
i already expected that the spine wack would break it, since the edge was already compromised, and it's an flat grind, the spine is the weaker then the edge.
The Trailmaster is still fairly stabby so I'm not going to dock it for breaking easily on the tip test. 24:13 "Now the spine" That was disappointing. For how thick the blade stock is I expected it to at least survive more than one hit on the brick. To be fair, this Trailmaster is just as good as the ESEE Junglas or BK9. Every time I watch one of these videos it ALMOST makes me buy a Terävä Skrama 240.
@@joex That's a little bit surprising because the Trailmaster will cut and stab a lot better. The other two are more chopping knives where the Trailmaster is a classic bowie that can also chop. Regardless of the surprising lack of overall durability the 3V blade is worth a premium as a camp knife. I really wish all of these knives weren't so overpriced these days.

When joe X was in school He went to recess.. it’s now called survival training… Marlboro
Marlboro!!!!
I'm surprised... actually 3V can withstand more... was the heat treatment carried out correctly? 🤔
i think it is a sheat knife!
@@joex Did you want to say "shit"?
3:30 to chop through that tree at the beginning...wow!
yeah"!
Do you think the cs shovels have gone down in quality too or not yet?
most def!
@@joex that's very sad to hear.... Will you be doing a gsm test of this? I'd really appreciate it
great knife durability test!
thanks!
I have a Trail Master in San Mai, and remember it was pricey at the time.
nice!
After the nail, I could reprofile that edge in like 3 minutes. I might need to find some good 3V.
Wie immer klasse Video!
Daher: allways 👍
Greetings from 👻
danke!
I use one of these as my large pack knife out in the back country - but it's in 01 steel
cool!
You have to test the Trailmaster Carbon V.
sure
Excelente prueba!
gracias!
Great job on the video
thanks!
Could the steel be overheated? The technological process of hardening is disrupted.
maybe they let some Minions make the blade!
@@joex😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
WTG in K329 seems to be doing better.
@@wellregulated8725 a lot!!!
It sould be from 440c
not really!
The 440c i know it is not like the CS gsm heattreating @@joex

next time, Silky Saw.
😁
For sure. It’ll eat that up in no time with minimal effort.
send it in brother!

You are making good money with your paid subscribers.
The geometry couldn't be any more different.
for the $$$ unacceptable!
i already expected that the spine wack would break it, since the edge was already compromised, and it's an flat grind, the spine is the weaker then the edge.
ok cool!
You also should review destroy DBK new made in china folder 😂❤❤
send it bro!!!!
Batoning the log 'I can hear it cracking' , what the knife lol ?
possible!
I hope one day you get your hands on a ZT 0006. I would send you one if i had the 300 bucks laying around.
not gonna happen!
BEEN waiting fo Da goat to test diss😂
Marlboro!!!!
Only a cold chisel will survive your testing.
@@samsnuts4716 🤣🤣🤣
The Trailmaster is still fairly stabby so I'm not going to dock it for breaking easily on the tip test.
24:13 "Now the spine"
That was disappointing. For how thick the blade stock is I expected it to at least survive more than one hit on the brick.
To be fair, this Trailmaster is just as good as the ESEE Junglas or BK9.
Every time I watch one of these videos it ALMOST makes me buy a Terävä Skrama 240.
Junglas i would choose of this 3
Skrama is the budget king
@@joex That's a little bit surprising because the Trailmaster will cut and stab a lot better.
The other two are more chopping knives where the Trailmaster is a classic bowie that can also chop.
Regardless of the surprising lack of overall durability the 3V blade is worth a premium as a camp knife.
I really wish all of these knives weren't so overpriced these days.
Woher bekommt man solch eine Weste ? ... hadt du da einen Link ?

Is the San Mai Trail Master a worse knife than the CPM 3V Trail Master - does anyone know the answer ????
we should ask Biden!
@joex Good Joe, which one would you choose, San Mai Trail Master or CPM3V?I trust you more than Biden 👍
cool! i am not a fan of the san mai steel so in this case i would take none of them CS Trail M blades!
@@joex thank you 🏅
