HATE to ask for engagement, but if you enjoyed the video I would be hugely grateful if you could give it a like, as my Red Dead Redemption videos often struggle to reach a wider audience, so in this case it would really help spread it to others that might enjoy it. Thank you! 🙏
A movie that was a very big inspiration for Red Dead Redemption 2 and my personal favourite western ever is The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I highly recommend watching it.

As with the GTA games, there's a bunch of stuff in RDR lifted directly from movies. It's fun making the connections and spotting the various Easter Eggs.
The Wild Bunch always really stands out as one of the most Red Dead feeling movies every time I watch it. The time period, the hardcore violence compared to many other movies, the characters and the overall feel and grit of it are all extremely reminiscent of eachother. Such a great movie. Two other movies that always feel like they're in the Red Dead universe are Fistfull Of Dynamite and Once Upon A Time In the West.
Incredible list, I've been wondering about this for years feeling like I've exhausted all the obvious films. Clearly a lot of Clint Westerns were inspirational for Red Dead, but I had no idea about The Proposition being so highly influential. Never even heard of it and I've seen a shit ton of Westerns. Thanks for the video, look forward to a part 2 🌵
Rockstar also got the director of The Proposition, John Hillcoat to do the promotional machinima, "RDR The Man from Blackwater". Was pretty amazed they got the man on board.
Your channel is a gem. I subscribed when I came across the video where you featured That Dirty Black Bag. Also, would absolutely love a video about the movies which inspired RDR 2!
There's also My Name is Nobody which directly influences the mission where Arthur has to take pictures of those he kills. My favorite Western. Please do an episode on it. Great channel!
The wild bunch more than any other really feels like the speaeheader for the series. It also blew me away the first time i watched it considering the themes and graphicness of it all was really ahead of its time.
I think Red Dead 2 has heavy influence from The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford and 310 To Yuma The scenery and cinematography in Red Dead 2 are very similar to The Assassination to Jesse James, as well as straight up referencing the train robbery scene almost shot for shot. Jesse’s character arc in the movie reminds me of Dutch too with the whole “charismatic romanticized outlaw gang leader shown to be a mentally unstable, scary, heavily flawed man” thing I think Micah Bell from RDR2 was heavily inspired by Charlie Prince from 310 To Yuma. Similar fashion sense (that badass jacket especially) but with the hat and jacket’s colors swapped, plus Charlie has that cold-blooded, sadistic brutality that Micah has. He’s much more loyal than Micah but there’s still quite a few similarities.
The Outlaw Josey Wales is by far the biggest visual inspiration. The snake oil salesman, The scars on the face between both main characters. The Cat and mouse plot and etc..
The only movies I can think of off the top of my head that were obvious influences to RDR2 are Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and The Assassination of Jesse James (Maybe The Great Silence, I could see that especially with the villain and the snowy mountains). RDR2 seems more inspired by history and literature than film
Both are actually pretty similar ,both are revisionist westerns, both go around a man who hunts 3 (originally 2) guys, both are about a bad man that want to change.
What about the companeros and the mercenary.Same era with RDR and the protagonist in the both movies help the mexican revolutionists like John Martston.

Yeah, that movie is on a different level!

The train station in Armadillo is identical the one in the opening scene From Once Upon A Time In The West.
That’s awesome, I never noticed that

So what other Westerns do you think had a big influence on Red Dead Redemption? 🤔
Rockstar also got the director of The Proposition, John Hillcoat to do the promotional machinima, "RDR The Man from Blackwater". Was pretty amazed they got the man on board.
Yeah, that was really weird. I was considering doing a video on the topic
The wild bunch was definitely a inspiration for rdr2
Yeah, big time
Also Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid
NO.
@@anantajoarder1962YES.
Love playing the game and love watching westerns. Take care
Awesome, thanks

Yes please to a video covering the movies that inspired Red Dead 2!
In terms in how John looks, dan evans from 3:10 to Yuma is definitely of the inspirations for not just rdr1 but also rdr2
Perfect list. The Proposition is such an underrated western.
Please do one for Red Dead Redemption 2. Great video as always!
Great video. One on the second game would be pretty good
Thank you! I guess I will see how this one is received first
One good Western that's a clear inspiration for RDR2 worth watching is The Great Silence.
High plains drifter for sure, and definitely the good the bad and the ugly, once upon a time in the west, and maybe even silverado?
Solid predictions!
@@JustWesterns ye Padens hat from Silverado is in red dead online

4. High Plains Drifter
3. The Wild Bunch
2. Unforgiven
1. The Proposition
Can you do the top 10 Western fiction novels? Please :)
I haven't seen the Proposition since it came out in cinemas, methinks I should rectify that!
Great film, love John Hurt in it
cheers mate
I noticed that the outfit The Pursuer in rdr 2 is the same that Burt Lancaster wore in the movie.
Would love a video with the inspirations for RDR2
Awesome, thanks for letting me know!

I knew all 4 of these were the inspiration without any pretext what so ever.
The Outlaw Josey Wales is by far the biggest visual inspiration. The snake oil salesman, The scars on the face between both main characters. The Cat and mouse plot and etc..
I'll subscribe so I will get notified for the red dead 2 version
Thanks, means a lot!

I think a fistfull of dinamite/duck you sucker was also a big inspiration
can't see too much of Unforgiven though in RDR1
Yeah, of the ones he cited that one feels like the least directly comparable
Both are actually pretty similar ,both are revisionist westerns, both go around a man who hunts 3 (originally 2) guys, both are about a bad man that want to change.
What about the companeros and the mercenary.Same era with RDR and the protagonist in the both movies help the mexican revolutionists like John Martston.
Very true, that could have easily been an influence
Unforgiven is the greatest western ever
You obviously must be a younger person or you haven't seen very many westerns.
👍🏾👌🏾
why is nobody talking about Django Unchained?? The Braithwaite shootout and burning down the braithwaite manor was straight out of that movie
I really hope we never see a movie adaptation of red dead redemption. The best version will still just be a rip of the perfect game.
Butch and Sundance the dollars trilogy for the first one
The Proposition is a horror movie.
