I honestly would’ve put Rango in honourable mentions
I would have put it on the damn list 🤠
Great call!
Agreed. It's an honorable mention at best.
its a baby cartoon bruh...we adults
........rango? Be so for real rn lol
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is my favorite, and one of my favorite movies. It strikes a surreal balance between realism and lyricism. It feels like an eerie old photograph brought to life. The matter of fact yet poetic narrator makes it feel like real life doesn't have to be overly dramatized, that real life is poetic enough.
Best one on the list
Hugh Ross. He also narrated The Age of Adeline. I find it strange that he haven't done way more movies. His voice is amazing!!!
It’s not a “western.” Great film, though.
@@shanevinson845
Of cause it's a western 🤣
It is incredibly boring.
And the oscar goes to … red dead redemption 2 👏👏
Yes haha I want a movie that makes me feel like the red dead series
@@vroomkeys there is none like red dead trust my I tried to find but there is nothing like this game
I’m watching this video because I’m currently playing red dead and it has me way in the mood to watch westerns
Jaja me too
Same
The Assassination Of Jesse James is a tremendous movie. People for some reason think its too slow, but I think its perfect in bringing you back to that time in the country. We need a 4K Directors Cut as it is supposedly 3 hours and 15 minutes. That's 35 minutes left out!
That classic Tombstone line. “I got 2 guns, one for each of ya”
Paired with Doc spinning his two pistols in different directions 😅
@ wait, did it really happen like that? If so, I never noticed
@@mutualpeaceWayne yeah, check it out!
Great list. Surprised Appaloosa and Hostiles weren't mentioned, but I'm happy to be reminded of some of these greats and looking forward to watching others for the first time.
And they didn't mention the Bone Tomahawk... and the Open Range...
No Appaloosa on this list is a crime
Hostiles is just perfect. And that ending...
Both those movies sucked
The Revenant, 3;10 to Yuma, Hell or High Water, Tombstone, Django Unchained, True Grit, Dances With Wolves, The Hateful Eight, Open Range and Unforgiven are some of the best Modern Westerns in my opinion.
No effort man…
These are all classic masterpieces and anyone of them would be someone's favorite. I would like to add honorable mentions to the honorable mentions in rounding out the top 20 and those would be "The Magnificent Seven"(2016)"Bone Tomahawk"(2015) "Hostiles"(2017) and Appaloosa(2008)
Anyone saw the harder they fall in Netflix
Bro where's "No Country"?
Legends of the Fall as well.
Great list but “Hostiles” is one of the best movies I’ve seen in the last 10 years, and is so underrated
I love many of those. Open Range is my favorite. But one that might have gotten overlooked that skirts the genre well is Sicario. It has a lot of the elements that make a great western movie to me.
Sicario and also Wind River, both written by the man who also did Hell or High Water, Taylor Sheridan. These are awesome western movies!
Would’ve loved to see Wind River mentioned
Wind River is superb . Great shout .
that movie was so depressing
Yes. Definitely an honourable mention
Excellent movie
One of the best slow-burn movie I've ever seen.
Wyatt Earp is one of my favorites. The alley by the OK Corral is actually the correct width. 😃 It has an awesome epic western storyline, and amazing music. This one should have made the list!!
Great list. +1 for "Dead Man". -10 for "Tombstone". I'd have reckoned "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" would've at least made an honorable mention.
The Sisters Brothers and the film Slow are absolutely fantastic modern Western films
Yes I was suprised not to see either in honorable mentions at least. Slow West is one of my favorite westerns. It’s got everything…unrequited love story, an outlaw running into his former gang, his redemption arc, a priest w a sniper rifle in guitar case and the hero dies in the end. Also Bone Tomahawk and Once upon a time in Mexico would make my own list and of course There Will Be Blood !
In no particular order
3:10 to Yuma
Sister Brothers
Lonesome Dove
Tombstone
unforgiven
Godless
Hell or Highwater
There will be blood
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
No Countey For Old Men
For A few dollars more
Slow west
Wind River
Sicario
Bone Tomahawk
Magnificent 7
But -#1 w/ a bullett….DEADWOOD
2007 was a solid year for film and westerns with No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford all coming out in that year.
solid year? No Country and TWBB were before their time. Such beautiful movies.
Damn, that was all in one year? Nice…
The Brad Pitt flick ( not typing the title) is such an underrated movie in general. Let alone westerns. Such a fantastic overall piece of cinema. I clicked the video purely for the thumbnail. Btw nice move on the revenant. You don’t need “cowboys” for a western. Subscribed.
You've compiled an excellent list. It's so difficult to pare it down to just ten. We've been fortunate since 1990. The Western did not die; it lives on and within the genre you'll find some of the best modern filmmaking there is.
Bone Tomahawk should be on this list. Absolute killer movie.
Nice list ! I would recommand to add Wyatt Earp, Old Henry, Hostiles, Appaloosa, Maverick, Quigley Down Under, Seraphim Falls....
Maverick and Quigley down under are decent flicks but they're comedies, not exactly the type of contenders for rewatchable top 10 Neo-Westerns.
Here to back up the plea for Hostiles. Incredible performance by Christian Bale and a truly tragic movie detailing both the side of Native Americans and the US Government. Their relationship throughout the film. And the deep struggles men and women went through at that time.
@@j_edwards6075 Quigley Down Under? A comedy? Are you sure you’re remembering the right movie?!
@@elijahalbiston it’s my favourite of his roles after the 3:10 to Yuma. Absolute masterpiece
Hostiles was great! Appaloosa too
I just went to my enormous "unwatched" dvd and blueray pile and moved Hell or High Water to the top of the much smaller "to be watched" pile so thanks.
Thanks for this fantastic list. Now I want to go back to watch these- again-and the runners up I haven't seen at all.
Once upon a time in the West is my all time favorite. I have watched it for multiple times but never get bored. Salute to Charles Bronsons
Probably on the Classic Westerns list unless they sub out Spaghetti Westerns
When i think of film as an art form Assassination of Jesse James is the film that comes to mind. It tells its story with incredible flair and artistry while not having any of it take away from the narrative or losing focus on characters. In fact i think the artistic cinematography enhances both the plot and characters. To me its a perfect film.
Great list. I'd also recommend The Homesman, Hostiles, and especially The Lonesome Dove (1989).
im a little surprised hostiles didnt make the list, christian bales performance in that was beyond phenomenal
20 great Westerns:
The Magnificent Seven (1960),
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966),
The Way West (1967),
Little Big Man (1970),
McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971),
Heaven's Gate (1980),
Walker (1987),
Dances with Wolves (1990),
Unforgiven (1992),
Buffalo Girls (1995),
Dead Man (1995),
Ride with the Devil (1999),
Cold Mountain (2003),
The Missing (2003),
There Will Be Blood (2007),
Appaloosa (2008),
Django Unchained (2012),
Slow West (2015),
Hostiles (2017),
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023).
Unforgiven is a great number one, but I can't see the total ignorance of Appaloosa. incredible cast, great dialog, humor, satisfying plot. Thanks for the rundown, some of these I'll have to see.
I need to throw Last Man Standing, The Way of the Gun, and Legends of the Fall into the hat for consideration.
For this list, we are looking at films from all genres of western, made AFTER 1990. Whether that be your more classically defined genre western, or more modern neo-westerns (such as 'Hell or High Water').
what about hostiles with christian bale
Damn, not even an honorable mention for Bone Tomahawk!? I know it's a little extreme (to say the least) at times, but it's a truly GREAT Western!!
@@TheGourdKing I disagree. I have a bias as BT is prob my #1 favorite film lol but I'd put Bone Tomahawk above ALL the films on the Honorable Mention list at the VERY least. I'lll keep it off the main list because of the violence but Bone Tomahawk looks, sounds, and feels more authentic/realistic, has better acting, and a richer story than basically every flick here. The Assassination of Jesse James... maybe the only film that looks better
@@TheGourdKing wow, lol! A disagreement in the comment section of a TH-cam video and neither person called the other or was called a "f*****g idiot" or were told to kill themselves!! See? It IS possible!!
Jokes aside, obv I'm just a Bone Tomahawk fanboy tho lol! Tho it's basic plot is classic Western fair, it plays out and features some new and refreshingly unique ideas.
If you're just a big fan of Westerns, like I am, and like to read at all, you should check out the two Western novels A. Craig Zahler wrote himself... 'A Congregation of Jackals' and 'Wraiths of the Broken Land'
Same type of character driven stories like his films, same great dialogue, and of course, his trademark of sporadic bursts of horrific violence!
@@TheGourdKing lolol! I literally own every one of those Cormac McCarthy titles! I haven't read Elmore Leonard's Westerns tho! I'm a huge fan of his crime fiction tho! Rum Punch is one of my favorites and is probably why Jackie Brown is my favorite Tarantino film!
I just finished Zahler's two books in a contemporary setting too. 'The Slanted Gutter' and 'Mean Business on North Ganson Street' are great too. Just a huge fan of this guy rn
Yeah bone tomahawk is definitely one of the best ive seen by far. Along with Old Henry which didnt make it
Yeah it's good in the sense of entertaining. But it's not a great movie.
Hostiles is an amazing film. In my Top Ten for sure.
I was looking for the hostiles comment. It could easily be the #1 western of all time.
Best western in my opinion
@@pete9328top 3
Open Range deserved a spot in the top 5 and Appaloosa atleast an honourable mention.
Appaloosa is far better a western than a few of these on here.
The revenant isn't even a western. Hell or high water either. Great movies, sure. But not westerns.
Open range only being an honorable mention is an absolute travesty.
Definitely watching some of these, awesome list.
Hostiles surely needs a mention. That film is incredible!
Hostiles should be #1
Definetly - was suprised to not see it
Hostiles was pretty mid
The most slept on modern western.
@@thewanderingsamurai1150 everyone's entitled to their opinion and you have chosen to voice yours. All the best.
Hostiles is another good one, though I get why it wouldn’t be included since it was only released recently
hostiles is so good . really underrated film.
If you haven’t seen all these films you are truly missing out this is a fantastic list!
I would rate the top 5 as follows: 1) Dances with Wolves 2) Tombstone 3) Open Range 4) True Grit, and 5) 3:10 to Yuma with Unforgiven as #6 & Buster Scruggs at least as an honorable mention.
I think any updated list in the future has to have Old Henry in the top 3. Amazing western.
Hatfields & McCoys was a superb series in 2012 that definitely deserves to be on this list
First off...the list is movies. Secondly, Hatfields and McCoys takes place in the East. It's an Eastern.
Your first point is valid, your 2nd is ridiculous@@easypeasy2938
I’ve always loved Clint Eastwoods films, they’re the reason I got interested in westerns
Assassination of Jesse James is so underrated. So glad i found it.
I mean all of these are pretty much instant modern classics, Hell or High Water is one of those kinda hidden gems of modern cinema, I love it
But any of these i cant get tired of watching
Low key, The Harder the Fall was great, on Netflix, should’ve made this list. You had a great ensemble cast, multiple gun fights and drama and great costumes and the music was fire!!! I know it’s a little over the top but it’s easily one of my recent film top 5 for the genre. If you haven’t seen it, get ya popcorn ready n thank me later!
Great list - would have loved to see Slow West here.
The good the bad and ugly .. reign supreme western of all westerns
But it is not a post 1990 film...
Good list. "All the Pretty Horses" is good too, honorable mention at least.
'in The Valley Of Violence' & ' 'Bone Tomahawk' are two of the best I have seen in the last year or two...
MOST LIKELY THE
ONLY ONE IN THE U.S
WHO THAUGHT,THE
UNFORGIVEN WAS
TRULY LONG AND
BORING"....
Gran Torino should be on this list I think, brilliant neo-western
Top 5
1 - Tombstone
2 - No Country
3 - Django
4 - Hateful
5 - Dances With Wolves
Brad Pitt should have won his Oscar for "Jesse James". He was criminally overlooked just like John Wayne for "The Searchers". (Side note: Casey Affleck used the same mannerisms and facial expressions as John Ireland in the original. When I saw the original I immediately noticed that.)
P.S. "Open Range" deserves to be in the list and I think the 1970 "True Grit" is better. More aesthetic. John Wayne's Oscar was long overdue.
Good list! Open Range is better than Tombstone.
And the John Barry score for Dances With Wolves is fantastic although it's interesting to note that Costner's first choice to score the film was Basil Poledouris. What could have been.
Legend of the fall, the quick and the dead.
All good movies but the order on this is crazy in my humble opinion. Bone tomahawk should be a honorable mention too.
Was hoping to see Last of the Mohicans on this list.
A Western that takes mostly in New York?
1. Unforgiven (1992)
2. Dances with Wolves (1990)
3. The Proposition (2005)
4. 3:10 to Yuma (2007)
5. True Grit (2010)
6. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
7. No Country for Old Men (2007)
8. Django Unchained (2012)
9. The Revenant (2015)
10. Hell or High Water (2016)
Open Range should have been in the top three at least, it is an almost perfect western.
lol what do you mean “almost”?
What do you mean it was number 2 bruh
@@dawsonlucas369 unfortunately it only gets an honourable mention.
I agree. This movie came out when I was in middle school and was probably one of my all time favorites. Open range and jeramiah johnson have always been two of my favorites.
Oh I so agree!
True grit 2010, tombstone, and the hateful eight are my favorite cowboy films of all time
True Grit was in so many ways a no 1 for me.
True Grit was amazing. I loved everything, and I was beyond positively surprised by the child acting, did not expect it to be great. She was 13!
The remake isn't even the best western called True Grit
Hostiles is a modern masterpiece, it could have replaced several movies on this list.
It’s easily the best western ever made
True Grit is a remake that truly lives up to original. Bridges nailed it!!
Both your lists are great and I've either seen,or own all of them. Here's an interesting question for you. Would you consider doing a list of movies that are Westerns but don't market themselves as Westerns. Star Wars for example, which takes so much from The Searchers ECT or some anime like Captain Harlock Arcadia Of My Youth. Or a list of foreign Westerns, Kurosawa ECT. Might make for some interesting videos. Keep up the good work.
We can definitely look at that, We have got a list looking at international westerns in the pipeline. Thanks for the comment.
Star Wars is sci-fi. There are no cowboys or horses. It's set in space, not in the old west.
Im shocked and surprised to see that there is no mention of The Sisters Brothers. Not just my top western, but one of the finest movies made in recent years. Also what an unimaginably awesome starcast!
Old man Henry wasn't out yet but easily would've place #2
Ohh no wonder it’s not on here lol such a great movie
Another one is News of the World, staring Tom Hanks. Highly recommend it.
Yo the proposition....simply amazing
Buster Scruggs is my all time favorite
fantastic list of films right there
True Grit (2010) is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen
Wow Christian Bale's voice is similar to John Marston's ... Love it dude !
Conagher is a classic with Sam Eliott. One of my favourite westerns of all time.
As modern day westerns go Open Range is my favourite! but in my opinion the greatest western of all time is Once upon a time in the west.
3:10 to Yuma was really good…and then the ending happened
So you're mad that they went with an unexpected original ending instead of the predictable boring normal ending to movies? The ending and the two main actors are what made that movie amazing.
@@bullythebooks it just felt out of character for Russell Crowe to murder his entire gang
@@TheGourdKing I’ve seen it twice
Thunderheart and Wind River should be on the list as well as Open Range
Ooh , Thunderheart is in my top 10 of ALL films ever. It’s so good.
Assassination of jesse james is one if the greatest movies I’ve ever seen, extremely underrated.
What about Hostiles (2017) or Wind River (2017)?
i'll like to recomend the quick and the dead as another option of little girl looking for revenge, it has a special place in my heart as i wathced with my dad once upon a time
Maybe an honourable mention for Wind River?
Great shout.
Jesse James is hands down the winner -- it's a Western story on the empty pursuit of fame as seen from both someone who attained it and someone who strived for it... the novel it was based on (and which the screenplay is largely cut from line by line) is one of the best written novels... ever.
I haven't watched the whole thing, but Old Henry should be on this list if it isn't. Fantastic movie. Tim Blake Nelson is outstanding in it
Open Range should in your top 10. Best shootout ever in a western. But, that being said I agree with most of your list
I would personally have added John Sayles' Lone Star as well
Unforgiven and Open Range are my favorites
ジェシージェームズとジャンゴは近年の西部劇作品の中だと本当傑作だと思う
Appaloosa & Missing should be here. Both some of the best westerns even made but never seemed to get much attention.
News of the World with Tom Hanks was pretty good too, even though it wasn't a cinematic release.
It was interesting. Not at all what I was expecting by the title.
Ooh, one of my absolute favorites. It definitely deserves more recognition.
It had a cinematic release in the States. I saw it in the theater.
Thank u. Good video.
good list, I think Appaloosa should have at least been a honorable mention. The gun fighting in that is so realistic.
"May I stand unshaken" got me here
The Magnificent Seven remake was pretty awesome too
Came here to say this! 😊
Bone Tomahawk! A western with not so much heroism, but intense scenes. Not under 17!
And the opposite: Lone Ranger! Surely PG-13. But it has it moments . . . .
Oh, neaarly forgot > thanks for the good list.
Ehhh. It’s alright. I got kinda bored sometimes. Idk why. Wish there was more character dev. But it’s more of a gore b horror film.
I feel like The Harder They Fall gets overlooked a lot
Appaloosa definitely deserves a honourable mention if you haven’t seen it
@SmashingUKProductions I would add Hostiles in the main list, The quick and the Dead, Magnificent 7 and the Homesman in honorable mentions
The proposition is lowkey a outstanding movie and everyone needs to watch it it should have been #2
Nice list man 🔥👌
« The Harder They Fall » is veryyyyyy good too guys ! Available on netflix 🤝🏽
Sicario is considered a Neo-Western (part of Sheridan’s trio with Wind River and Hell or High Water). It would be in my top 3.
Should've added Bone Tomahawk and Hostiles, but great list either way
Would’ve loved to have seen Old Henry (2021) mentioned! If anyone hasn’t seen it I highly suggest it
great list
