The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is my favorite, and one of my favorite movies. It strikes a surreal balance between realism and lyricism. It feels like an eerie old photograph brought to life. The matter of fact yet poetic narrator makes it feel like real life doesn't have to be overly dramatized, that real life is poetic enough.
The Assassination Of Jesse James is a tremendous movie. People for some reason think its too slow, but I think its perfect in bringing you back to that time in the country. We need a 4K Directors Cut as it is supposedly 3 hours and 15 minutes. That's 35 minutes left out!
The Revenant, 3;10 to Yuma, Hell or High Water, Tombstone, Django Unchained, True Grit, Dances With Wolves, The Hateful Eight, Open Range and Unforgiven are some of the best Modern Westerns in my opinion.

Here to back up the plea for Hostiles. Incredible performance by Christian Bale and a truly tragic movie detailing both the side of Native Americans and the US Government. Their relationship throughout the film. And the deep struggles men and women went through at that time.
For this list, we are looking at films from all genres of western, made AFTER 1990. Whether that be your more classically defined genre western, or more modern neo-westerns (such as 'Hell or High Water').
When i think of film as an art form Assassination of Jesse James is the film that comes to mind. It tells its story with incredible flair and artistry while not having any of it take away from the narrative or losing focus on characters. In fact i think the artistic cinematography enhances both the plot and characters. To me its a perfect film.
You've compiled an excellent list. It's so difficult to pare it down to just ten. We've been fortunate since 1990. The Western did not die; it lives on and within the genre you'll find some of the best modern filmmaking there is.
Appaloosa is far better a western than a few of these on here. The revenant isn't even a western. Hell or high water either. Great movies, sure. But not westerns. Open range only being an honorable mention is an absolute travesty.
I mean all of these are pretty much instant modern classics, Hell or High Water is one of those kinda hidden gems of modern cinema, I love it But any of these i cant get tired of watching

I agree. This movie came out when I was in middle school and was probably one of my all time favorites. Open range and jeramiah johnson have always been two of my favorites.

Both your lists are great and I've either seen,or own all of them. Here's an interesting question for you. Would you consider doing a list of movies that are Westerns but don't market themselves as Westerns. Star Wars for example, which takes so much from The Searchers ECT or some anime like Captain Harlock Arcadia Of My Youth. Or a list of foreign Westerns, Kurosawa ECT. Might make for some interesting videos. Keep up the good work.
Jesse James is hands down the winner -- it's a Western story on the empty pursuit of fame as seen from both someone who attained it and someone who strived for it... the novel it was based on (and which the screenplay is largely cut from line by line) is one of the best written novels... ever.
