3 years ago I paid $450 for a wanhao i3. And I’ve put about $100 in upgrades/repairs. And it’s still not even close to this thing. Sometimes I want to be bummed out, but I remember that I just got into the hobby early, and watching it develop is just part of the hobby.
Please man, make some more videos with this machine for upgrading, calibration and such. This printer needs a bigger community and you are one of the few people online that I can definitely trust.
Good point. One common issue with this printer is that the ribbon cable can burn through and it's possible to flash the firmware to reduce the current slightly. Unfortunately I have yet to find any X1-specific videos on how to do this. I haven't printed much at all on mine, because I want to reduce the risk of cable burn before I do, but I haven't had time to make those changes.
I would love to get that printer too but too many fire hazards what i have heard. Will most likely buy CR-10S Pro v2 cause of large community in cr side

I just received and installed a Zesty "Nimble" extruder for my homemade Rostock Delta printer. It was originally a Bowden style, and I have to say that the Nimble is a huge improvement. It keeps the weight of the stepper motor off the print head, but still gives you a direct drive of the filament, without the Bowden tube. Working great so far.

This was a great review - enthusiastic and fair. Thanks for being thorough and thoughtful. :) I'm glad to see that larger printers are becoming more mainstream and affordable. There are so many applications for makers with that larger build volume. I'm not in a place to drop $500+ CAD on it right now but this is probably the large printer I've been waiting for! Also think it's cool that it's so quiet. My printer is from 2015, and I've done some upgrades but boy does it make its presence known.
Thanks for reviewing this printer, Devin! I was already considering buying one this year. I've been watching a lot of different reviews of it..seems pretty awesome!

Trust me, the knobs are enough, manual calibration is good enough to print, automatic bed leveling just saves you 5 minutes every week to calibrate the bed...
I just got one of these a couple weeks ago and I love it. I did have one issue: a couple prints failed due to thermal runaway detection. Turned out the ribbon to the extruder had 3 pins that were corroded probably because I tried setting it to 270 for clearing a jam. I've to date really only had 3 failed prints and 2 were from that. It's been very reliable and I plan on printing Nylon with it soon
Great video 👍 I think there were a couple missed opportunities though. I really like it when printer reviews go over some of the basic electronics and Mechanical parts of the machine. What brand is the Power Supply? What Stepper drivers does the machine use and are they integrated or upgradeable? What kind of main board does the machine have. Is everything wired properly? Quality of the steppers, pulleys, belts, wheels, and couplers? No Auto Bed Level? Does the printer support it as an easy upgrade? Also I think it might be a good idea to disclose In the beginning of the video that you were given the printer to review and did not purchase it.(I know it is in the description but to make it abundantly clear is probably better)
Thanks for the feedback! I try to keep my reviews kinda simple with the technical details because that info exists on the product page so it's more about my experience with the machine.. plus there are plenty of other reviews with that info 😋
Youce really sold me on this Devin. I too dont think for $400 you can get anything better and without the auto level it makes things a lot simpler. Manual is the way to go, just set and forget. Goodbye creality.
I was joking about getting a larger 3d printer while watching your Elegoo video and this pops up. Coincidence? A sign? The new ukulele tuner app I put on my phone that needs the microphone?😲😂 Nice printer!

I've had my eye on this printer for a while. I've been using a CR-10S for about a year, and it prints very well. I've also modded it for direct drive, which is nice. But the built in direct drive, sturdy construction, and not dealing with a separate control and power with tons of wires is a massive upgrade. It's also shockingly quiet! Even with added stepper dampers, the CR-10s is kinda distracting.

Can I just add that the support from Artillery is bettered only by Prusa. They are active in the facebook group and the group is littered with comments from people praising the after sales support they are getting. I think they have done well with this printer.
Great video. I've probably watched 30 YTs about this printer and I have pretty much decided that this is going to be my first large build area printer. My question to you is how many of these did you have to send back before you got a good one because your prints are the absolute best I've seen come off the Sidewinder X1. The reason I ask quite seriously is that many of the reviews and comments on other channels about this printer are quite mixed. Many complaints in the videos and especially in the comments (not on your channel though for some reason). Your experience with this printer seems to be somewhat rare. At least from what I've found in my searches for unbiased information. Did you buy it or was it provided free for the purpose of the review? If you sourced it yourself where may I ask did you source it from. Thanks for your time and keep making these great videos. They really are well done.
Artillery sent it to me, so there's always a possibility that it got some preferential treatment in quality control, but as I showed there was still a close call with the ribbon cable so I'm not too sure. I literally just took my CR-10 Slicer settings in Simplify3D, tweaked them tiny bit to better suit direct drive printing, and it has printed great!
@@make.anything That's a good tip. Working up a profile from scratch is a lot of trial and error. I'm a Cura guy but one of these days I'm going to take a crack at Simplify3D. Thanks for the reply.

The only issue with ultrabase style beds and power resume functionality is if the power is out for long enough that the bed cools the print is going to pop free when you restart the print.
Hello. I've been watching other reviews on this printer and I was leaning towards a cr10 or a cr10spro to upsize from my ender 3 pro. But this one has caught my I eye. I noticed on one review that extra ribbon cables came with it. Did you get them as well. Also are spare parts like nozzles available from say Gear best and amazon. Thanks
Hi I really liked this review and was very interested in the printer but looking for a printer with printing area to be 350mm x 350mm x 350mm or bigger. Any good suggestions you have of printers at that scale?
You are talking about a volcano style nozzle... is it compatible with mk8 or e3d v6? What do you do when the hotend is clogged or the nozzle worn out? Is it a 24V or 12V system? I've seen a product page saying it has an MKS Gen L Board, so definitely an 8 bit type (not totally a problem, but noticeworthy in 2019), and some kind of TMC drivers because of the silence (noteworthy because some people might want to replace them or add a second extruder). Other "pro" questions would be if there is a bootloader, is the firmware available etc... maintenance stuff.
Hehe yea I'm no engineer so my reviews tend to simply look at my experience printing with it and the results. I know it's their custom TMC drivers, and the nozzle can be swapped with a genuine E3D volcano nozzle. It's standard firmware and I've seen others modify it. 24V AC heating for the bed.
@@richardjfaulkner3811 Great! Yes I've read a lot of tutorials how to fix some issues on the Pro, and I've already have my 3 noctua fans at home, just waiting for the printer :)
@@MarcinBauer well your all set to go, your going in aware of the slight faults that are easy to fix. Good community support too around the creality machines.
If you still happen to be looking for a printer, I have an Ender 3 V2, but I'm currently looking at a Kingroon KP3S as a secondary. From everything I can find, they are lightyears ahead of the Enders in both print quality (direct extruder, linear rails, etc), usability (Enders are VERY finicky), and they are WAY cheaper ($175 all day long). My upgraded Ender cost well over $300 with all the parts I've had to add to it, and it still can't match the out-of-the-box performance of the KP3S. The only real downside to the Kingroon is the print volume, which is 180mm^3, but if that little bit of size difference matters to you, Kingroon has a couple of larger models that can match its performance and still beat the Ender 3 V2's total cost. I've seen a couple of KP3S print farms, and they seem to be doing EXTREMELY well, with a dozen or more printers running almost 24/7 for months and not requiring any real maintenance.
The bowden setup on creality printers actually do not allow for faster printing because the hotend is not able to keep up with high filament throughput as the heat zone is not long enough to allow time for material to heat and melt. Simple as that really.
Let me stop you right there. Auto Leveling adds complication? Seems to me it's less complicated to not deal with 4 leveling screw. Those ribbon cables will wear out a lot faster than conventional cables. Hopefully the mesh adhesive wrap on the ribbons will help the durability of the cables.
Hi! I´m looking for an Artillery X1 and I need to know if you have had any trouble whith the flat wire, I have seen many people reporting failures and they have to change the wires.. thanks!
Artillery sidewinder x1 vs mingda d3 pro vs creality cr 10 v3? Which of the three printers would you prefer? Or what other direct drive printer would you prefer? Why is that? Thanks in advance for your answer.
Using the inverse of the ear you could make custom-fit ear buds or even earphones (I recall a few years back seeing custom moulded earphones for an incredible price but apparently they're very effective)
I was all on board with this review until he mentions that auto bed leveling is "Unnecessary and adds complication". Having started with a printer that used the same style of bed leveling as this one and upgrading it to a bltouch auto bed leveling system i can tell you its totally worth it.
Have you ever tested out more expensive 3D printers? I've been working with Ultimakers (3 Extended & S5) for two years now for educational prototypes. I'm curious to know your thoughts on machines using their own specific brand filaments versus generics. I've experienced huge differences in quality (especially generic brand PVA versus the Ultimaker brand PVA for dual extrusion supports).
Nice review, guess this will be my next printer, you where just the final nail in that decision LOL , small note: your link to buy from Amazon seem not to work (well, not for Amazon Canada, so if you want that tip from the link, just mentioning it to you =D ) , I am looking forward to a other review later on your take from how it performs after a few months of hard work and any changes you made to it over time, I find that people do not often do reviews on follow-up on machines. Thanks for the nice clear review, a good day to you =D
I appreciate your input, but suggest that you run a video on how to utilize Cura or Speciality slicer to get on the right page for utilizing the Artillery X1 using those slicers for setup on this printer. It would be a big help. Thanks
quick question, recently got this printer and have been experiencing warping of the print from the bed usually about 5-10 minutes into the print. the filament is PLA, and print settings are 200 celsius for the nozzle and 75 for the bed. this has happened on every print except two (an absolute ton). big fan of your vids and appreciate your knowledge. any advice much appreciated.
In your opinion which is one of the best printers bang for the buck that will do 320x320x320 minimum. Trying to narrow it down and the sidewinder is not available through gearbest or Amazon in Canada. We are obviously a second class country.
I am looking at this as my first printer and am trying to get something that will be functional for a long time. Would you recommend this as a first printer?
You said that you were able to print some objects at a .08mm layer height. How do you manage that when Artillery officially states that the Sidewinder only has a 100 micron (.1mm) resolution?
somebody in other channels is saying the ribbons and the extruder are not reliable. that's why there are extras included in it. and if the ribbons break i think it will be hard to find a replacement ribbon.
I like direct drive printers because I print at low speeds for the quality. But I really don't like the ribbon cable idea. This cable is not meant to handle high currents such as the required for the hotend. Besides that the connectors are not meant to handle movement. I imagine that they use at least 4 wires to handle the hotend current but if just one of these wire's connector fails, it will overcharge the others. Sorry for my bad English.
Hi i just purchased a Artillery 3D SW-X1. i am have an issue with it beeping when it heats the bed and extrude any fixes? Also my ABS prints look bad they split (any tips). Finally the prints wont stick? great video thanks for your help.
Hi, thanks for this great video with all your usual enthousiasm but I have a question: which slicer do you use for this printer and which model settings do you chose? Thanks in advance and have a great day ;)
I mostly use Simplify3D because I'm most familiar with it, but whatever the slicer I just start with the CR-10(or similar) profile and work from there. It's pretty similar, but since it's direct drive you can reduce the retraction distance... That's about all I change
@@make.anything Just to let you know, I ordered for a Genius AND a Sidewinder because of you :) Genius is 231 euros here and Sidewinder is 317 euros (from GearBest from their german stock).
I've had my cr10s(not pro) for years and it's been great! Thought the pro was better and was thinking of upgrading... No?
It depends what you are looking for. The pro has some nice conveniences but won't change print quality dramatically if at all
Let me stop you right there. Auto Leveling adds complication? Seems to me it's less complicated to not deal with 4 leveling screw. Those ribbon cables will wear out a lot faster than conventional cables. Hopefully the mesh adhesive wrap on the ribbons will help the durability of the cables.
Hi! I´m looking for an Artillery X1 and I need to know if you have had any trouble whith the flat wire, I have seen many people reporting failures and they have to change the wires.. thanks!
Should I save more and buy this as my first 3D printer instead of the Ender 3 Pro..l Nice video indeed, subscribed
Artillery sidewinder x1 vs mingda d3 pro vs creality cr 10 v3? Which of the three printers would you prefer? Or what other direct drive printer would you prefer? Why is that? Thanks in advance for your answer.
Best printer I ever bought for €300!
Nice review
Thanks for sharing 👍😀
Excellent review! Just buy one! Where can I get a good cure profile for print PLA with the sidewinder x1?
Using the inverse of the ear you could make custom-fit ear buds or even earphones (I recall a few years back seeing custom moulded earphones for an incredible price but apparently they're very effective)
Unfortunately the ear isn't a 3D scan, just modeled in my likeness, but I like where your head is at :)
Hello. Could you share the settings of your slicer, which you used in particular for printing an octopus? I beg you, PLEASE.
YAY!
9:40 R.I.P octopus
XD
Would you advise adding TL Smoothers as with an Alfawise U20 or Cr-10 ?
Would love to hear about any tuning/settings you use for PLA on the Sidewinder?
I was all on board with this review until he mentions that auto bed leveling is "Unnecessary and adds complication". Having started with a printer that used the same style of bed leveling as this one and upgrading it to a bltouch auto bed leveling system i can tell you its totally worth it.
hi Devin.can you please post the file that you showed in the video? Thank you
Have you ever tested out more expensive 3D printers? I've been working with Ultimakers (3 Extended & S5) for two years now for educational prototypes. I'm curious to know your thoughts on machines using their own specific brand filaments versus generics. I've experienced huge differences in quality (especially generic brand PVA versus the Ultimaker brand PVA for dual extrusion supports).
Oh that's an ear in the thumbnail... not a... 😳
I don't get why people are confusing it like that...
It's like none of you have seen a...
oh.
ohhh...
;p
I can't decide between the Sidewinder or the JGMaker A5S.
I generally don't do follow up reviews per se, but I show progress through other project videos and update my website :)
Could you please do a video on a cura file for this 30 printer? Or at least just post one? I love the video great work.
thank you for the review
What is the version they are up to now looking to get this mt CR10S Pro just does not do TPU correctly
Cool review. How were you able to model your own ear?
3d scan
You're starting an ASMR channel with that ear aren't you, Devin?
Sorry for my bad English.
thanks for the great review
Yo dawg, I'm never this early!
My Cr10S Pro would be quiet if they picked better fans. Like many I'll be changing mine but meh.
I’m a little concerned about the ribbon cables durability and the quality assurance... I’m impressed by the sound
What would you consider a step up from this printer?
I want something slightly better.
Hi i just purchased a Artillery 3D SW-X1. i am have an issue with it beeping when it heats the bed and extrude any fixes? Also my ABS prints look bad they split (any tips). Finally the prints wont stick? great video thanks for your help.
Yay we can make ear fleshlights
Hi, thanks for this great video with all your usual enthousiasm but I have a question: which slicer do you use for this printer and which model settings do you chose? Thanks in advance and have a great day ;)
I mostly use Simplify3D because I'm most familiar with it, but whatever the slicer I just start with the CR-10(or similar) profile and work from there. It's pretty similar, but since it's direct drive you can reduce the retraction distance... That's about all I change
@@make.anything Thanks for your reply and for the retraction tip. Cheers ;) Kepp up the good job
@@make.anything Just to let you know, I ordered for a Genius AND a Sidewinder because of you :)
Genius is 231 euros here and Sidewinder is 317 euros (from GearBest from their german stock). This is just like byuing a Sidewinder full price and having a Genius as commercial gift!!!! I'm very glad of the video I watched on these two printers. Some channels are talking about problems but I want to hump into direct drive so... I hope all will be ok.
Do you think CR10 settings in Cura will fit for Genius too?
@@lepoloo Instant factory. Nice!
@@make.anything I kind of :)
Till today I was using the Anycubic i3 Mega but it's unable to print anything now. I also had the Chiron that never worked correctly. Autolevelling never worked correctly and manual levelling with such a big and bent bed was not possible. My Mega is now having very weird behaviour so. I give up and I'll go with those two Artillery as soon as they arrive.
I've been very happy with your comments. I feel confident about those printers. Time will say... Have a good day and continue with your incredible creativity. :)
