“Abide”, written by York, commemorates the fallen martyrs in the U.S. Civil Right Movement between 1954 and 1968. The poem is a subtle record for its readers to ponder upon what it means to elegize. At the end of the martyrs’ lives, their sacrifice lits up a path for their fellow comrades. The poem was featured in New York Times in 2012. Inspired by York’s reading his own poetry, Forrest chose to set most of York’s text in a rather homophonic and style. He surrounds it with rich piano accompaniment which envelops and embraces his own honest voice, inviting the audience to enjoy and reflect in nature’s serenity.
    Text:
    Forgive me if I forget
with the birdsong and the day’s
last glow folding into the hands
of the trees, forgive me the few
    syllables of the autumn crickets,
    the year’s last firefly winking
like a penny in the shoulder’s weeds,
if I forget the hour, if I forget
the day as the evening star
pours out its whiskey over the gravel
    and asphalt I’ve walked
for years alone, if I startle
when you put your hand in mine,
if I wonder how long your light
has taken to reach me here.
