這首歌的詞出自聖經的路得記1章16-17節，記載當時年輕寡婦路得深受婆婆拿俄米的仁慈和信心所感動，即使拿俄米勸她離開改嫁離開她也不從，甚至願意跟隨婆婆的信仰，相伴直死。歌末一句「除非死能使你我相離」，更突出路得忠貞的愛。
The text of “Entreat me not to leave you” is originated from Bible Ruth 1:16-17. A young widow name Ruth was touched by her mother-in-law, Naomi’s love and faith towards God. Although Naomi asked Ruth to leave, she does not comply, and even requests to follow Naomi’s faith. The line “if ought but death parts you and me” shows Ruth’s loyalty towards Naomi and God.
