A great review by the crew at Edmunds. Many thanks. Regarding prices, Type R; $45,890, GR Corolla; $46,000, Mustang; $56,400, Elantra N; $35,320. Regarding the Mustang, thank you Ford for still making the Mustang and making it available with a V8 and with a manual transmission. Considering that the Mustang did not have the magneride suspension, and the tight course, it performed very well in the autocross. The big surprise for me was how the underpowered Elantra N performed in the autocross test, with beating the GR Corolla and being pretty close to that of the Type R. In my opinion, with the Elantra being the cheapest here, and by a big margin, with what it achieved it is the winner. It is terrific that there are still fantastic fun petrol cars available. Any of these cars will bring great joy to their owners. :)

lap time does not suggest great handling, handling is a translation of cars feedback to the driver and driver's confidence pushing the car to the limit, GRC with its awd, swb and it's extremely rigid chassis makes it handles better because it is easy. Also EN is on PS4S, Corolla is on a less aggressive PS4 tires. Also every single independent track test suggest that the GR Corolla is faster than the elantra N on the track with the same tires, but let me continue. For the FWD record, was it an official time and was there other cars tested at the same time? I mean, the Type R holds the FWD production car record at other tracks so not sure what point that proves.
Lets all be honest here: Civic Type-R is the car here but....... F*** those dealers with the 15-20k$ markup, juste because of that that car is way overprice for what it give Mustang = great car, but..... not practical at all, its more like a week-end car, forget about it in the snow, its a terrible winter car GR Corolla = Ahahahaah!!! Terrific car fom Toyota but....... This is a track car that can't track.......Yessss the transmission overheat after 2-3 hard lap... that is terrible, terrible. See GR corolla on fire over the net lol Elantra N = yes, spec wise it is the worst, but it beat all the others cars with their biggest flaw: There is no 15-20K$ markup on them unlike the civic type-r, The car is pratical (4 doors, fwd for winter driving) unlike the mustang, The car is ready for track all day long, it wont overheat or catchfire like the corrola GR. Just to be clear I am big fan of Honda. But for me Elantra N tick all the box, he is good at everything but master of none. Elantra N is the winner
The Elantra N "didn't quite stack up," yet the Hyundai Elantra N dominates the TCR class, winning both the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the TCR Championship.
For anyone wanting a new GT, you are better off buying a used gen 1. You can fix anything that needs fixing and mod it to make it faster than a new one and still be left with 20k in your pocket lol.
@@C6BlueDevil So then don't add the performance pack lol. And the $45k you're quoting is with destination. CTR is $45k starting, + destination (but we're splitting hairs) but + the most important factor: dealer markups. Unless that's no longer a thing.
Sike...I bet the GR Corolla is funner and even the Type-R because of the insane amount of grip. Not fishtailing a heavy boat that's about to wrap around a pole.
A mustang might be more fun to just hoon around in. But when it comes to a race track it will actually be the most difficult and frustrating car to race. As a Grand Turismo Veteran since the PS1 I have grown to dislike high performance RWD cars. An old friend that was a muscle car guy got frustrated with GT racing because he couldn't keep the cars on the track.
The Elantra is 10k less than the Civic so is the civic that much better? I would take the Elantra the bang for buck it one of best deals out there. Side note why mention 1/4 mile track then only post 0-60 times? The 1/4 mile is better way of showing how a car accelerates than 0-60.
@@downsouthlouisianaThat specific price range ($20k MSRP spread) is way too broad. It’s meaningless. I can get EN for under MSRP where I live, but the dealers are still asking $60k for a Type R here. I don’t know where you can get a type R near MSRP. So your argument holds no water. Of course a car costing 20k more should be faster and better handling. Just goes to show you just how god the EN is.
@JohnLee-db9zt I got my type r in west palm beach at msrp the very first day I looked. It's really not that hard to find. I also lost over 10k in value on the 2 year old elantra N that I traded for it, so technically, I paid more for the Elantra. And that would have only gotten worse with more time
I feel like Ford missed an opportunity to improve the handling of the new Mustang GT. Not many are willing or have the means to pay nearly 70k for a Dark Horse.
Best Edmunds video review in a long time. Appreciate the inclusion of an Autocross test. Not many drivers track their cars, but we have hundreds of autocrossers in our area. New performance car drivers are often amazed at which cars actually perform best in that environment.

The Elantra N was done dirty here. You used the manual version which is the slower version. Everybody that does these kind of videos always takes the slower version. The DCT can put up numbers like 4.8 seconds in the 0-60 and 13.4 in the 1/4 mile. You did 0-60 in 6 seconds, you should be ashamed of yourselves. It's like they want to feature the Elantra N cuz it's getting all these positive reviews, but doesn't want it to perform better on their videos.
Elentra N is atill a go to for me. Thats more so because of price. The GR corolla would be the win for me over the type R. just preference. But Type R and the GR are well over 50k CDN. Closer to 60-65k. EN ive seen for 40k and below. And thats for me a huge win for an average consumer for a performance car of this price range.
Driven all (+MK8 Golf R) and love all. GR was truly the most fun of the bunch hands down. For sure not the fastest either. But once you get in the twisties, the driver feel of the car is superb. Super light front end with confidence inspiring AWD system. I live in colder climates so this car checks all my boxes for needs. Has done amazing in the snow, and is too much fun!
I feel like the weighting of the autocross shouldn't be equal to the other categories because most people aren't willing to void their warranty so they can autocross it. If the weighting is the same, then the price should also be the same and you can include modifications to all of them so that they are all at the $56k level with mods, or without as in the Mustang case. If the weighting is half (out of 2pts, not out of 4) then the Mustang and GRC are tied and the CTR is in 3rd place... or, you could just say it's a 3-way tie because it really is.
These cars straight line performance wise are considered 'slow' nowadays after Hyundai released the I5N and Tesla the 2024 M3P (U.S. version). You would have to invest some serious money to get an Elantra N into the 10's constantly without having to put in wrench time every couple runs. Jason did an 11.65 after hybrid turbo and running meth and some other upgrades ... slicks and on the track (not on the street which isn't prepped and with legal tires mind you) and still didn't beat the previous model M3P. Golf R would be easier but costs more... would have to swap out the Turbo most likely to get into the 10's which will fuXor your warranty on these cars. Tesla M3P (U.S.) for 47900 (after tax credit and no dealer markups lol) is the best bang for the buck now. Avg. of 10.8s in the quarter and 2.7 sec (w/rollout) 0 - 60mph anywhere really... no need for drag radials/slicks or prep :P There is no other *new stock car that can touch those #'s for under 50k!
Thank you for this comparison. We are eating good right now with enthusiast focused working man sports cars and I am taking none of it for granted. I hope to own a GR Corolla soon. I have an FK8 Honda Civic Type R and I am never selling that car.

It's down on power, it's down on price, but we won't run the DCT because it wouldn't be fair..... this is like every video ever with the Elantra N. Showing 6 sec 0-60 here when stock DCT has seen 4.8. The 6sp variant still always gets praised but always falls just a tiny bit short of cars costing 10K+ more. 10K+ cheaper but somehow not fair to use the DCT, it's pretty funny almost like there's a NDA for having to make the Type R #1 no matter what, no matter by how little.
@@reyfuentes4572Does anyone care about transmission “fairness” on the street, drag strip, or track IRL? No! If someone made that excuse, they’d get laughed at. But here online where everyone is a Care Bear, it’s unfair 🤷

Cars catch on fire all the time. I literally had 2 coworkers who had their cars burn down to the ground. One had a 2021 Acura TLX and the other a Mercedes Benz AMG. I think it was a CLS or whatever the bigger 4 door coupe model is. But let a GR Corolla or Tesla or Hyundai catch on fire and people act like it’s breaking news in the history of the ICE.
The results are not surprising, the EN is $10k - $25K less than the others, and that's only the MSRP...real-word prices are more like $15 - $30k less. Spending more for more power will let you go faster, pretty obvious. Thing is, the EN can go straight to the track without overheating in a lap or two, or killing its OEM tires, or catching fire if you go over 85mph. (Which Toyota won't cover under warranty). The Elantra is also the only one that offers an advanced DCT transmission for those who prefer modern technology. It truly is an amazing performance car at any price, and a bargain at $35K
RIP Kona N. It would've killed this test: it's equally as quick as a manual EN, faster with NGS on, and tucks itself perfectly on sharp turns presented in an autox scenario. No only that, it's the funniest of all of these to drive!!!
@@jmmch3358 yes, something that can affect it on a large track that also has different inclines. On a small track, it compensates for the high center of gravity. Bmw engineers aint dumb; the KN on a softer suspension setting and a high center of gravity would equate to a jello-like wobbly ride. You would have to lower it AND THEN loosen the suspention.
I have a 16 Mustang GT, and I absolutely love it and plan to keep it forever. Stock Mustang suspension is wallowy, but a few mods and good tires really wakes it up in the corners. I've been wanting a GR Corolla for a while, and I might pull the trigger when the refreshed model comes out. Good to see the GRC brings a lot of smiles. Really enjoyable comparison!!
I drive a type r in autocross my buddy drives an elantra n. Both cars are pretty good. Some days I beat him, some days he beats me. I would race in an elantra N but I would not want to own it just because I don't trust hyundai reliability even though they've been making pretty reliable cars for a while now.
Awesome video loved all the comparisons. It would’ve been really cool if you would’ve added something that was $50,000 used to the mix to see how it held up with all the rest of the cars.
For about $550 you can throw a Scorcher GT piggyback on the Elantra N with some colder range spark plugs like the HKS M45XL, run it on Sport + mode, and gain 45hp and 60ftlbs, dropping the 0-60 down to 5.35 seconds and putting in the number 2 spot in the leader board easy AND keep your powertrain warranty. Literally the best performance car deal of the last 20yrs except for the Fiesta ST but with better reliability.
The conclusion of the video is that it's really a 3way tie. The Mustang wins against the CTR in 3rd handling/fun category... even without the magnaride, but then the magnaride makes it even better but for even more money. If that happens, then the Mustang wins and the CTR and GRC are tied... but then, if the CTR is better priced than the Mustang, then the CTR wins... but then, if the CTR is better priced so it wins, the GRC is even better priced (GRC core with performance package, $8k less than CTR) so it wins. You basically need a whole other category which takes into account bang for your buck, and clearly the GRC would pull up to the CTR and Mustang... which means 3way tie... but, then there's the dealer issue/factor... there is NO WAY you are going to be treated like any decent human being at any Honda dealer, and Toyota is generally the better dealer experience... so, because of the dealer experience, I feel the GRC wins this beating the others out by a nose... but it's basically a 3way tie. In final, I WOULD NEVER STEP FOOT IN A HONDA/ACURA DEALER WITH MY EXPERIENCE! So to me, the CTR loses to all of them, even a Hyundai.
Just crazy that a Mustang GT is now $57k. No longer a V8 car that everyday people can afford. Shame on Ford for raising the price on essentially a last gen car to this absurd price
Try making any of these cars a daily driver in a place where you get 5 months of terrible weather a year(mostly snow), and tell me its anything other than the GR Corolla. Such negligible differences pretty much seal the deal only when it comes to your own personal preference or the reality of where you live in the world.
I would disagree. I have driven every car here. If we are talking fun to drive, the Hyundai and Toyota are more fun than the other 2. If you are talking numbers, and fun to drive then yes the Honda, and the Mustang are maybe more well rounded. If I buy a performance car, I want it to be involving and fun. The rest of it you can have.
I agree, but to be fair, stock Mustang suspension is more for comfort. Add stiffer springs and maybe some sway bars, and it'll be really solid in the corners.
@@sonydominates you aren’t wrong but tires make a tremendous difference. They already admitted that those tires were somewhat cooked before the test. A set of 285 square tires work well on those cars even with the stock suspension.
Mustang way more fun whens a front wheel drive ever been more fun than rear wheel with 485 hp. The mustang would of crushed the other 3 in time around the race track why wasn’t it timed. Like to see the other 3 leave a burnout spinning aint winning but its grinning lol!!
Being an owner of a Type R of course I am biased. That still doesn't take away the fact that I love seeing comparisons like this. I haven't tracked my CTR yet but have seen plenty of videos from other CTR on the track that can hold their own with other far more capable sports cars. Front wheel drive 4 poppers are not supposed to be able to hang......
Sigh, language matters. Being bias LITERALLY I mean LITERALLY according to the English language means it takes away from your ability to be impartial… like that’s what biases mean… 😂 words are hard I get it.
Great comparison, i would have liked to see points given for pricing as well. Pricing is always important for majority of consumers. Keep up the good work.
The consensus is that it wouldn’t be fair. V8 vs a 4 banger, awd/rwd vs fwd, 10k+ price difference are all fair just can’t do auto vs manual because reasons….
Performance reviews should always be on the same tire. I understand it’s based on dealer options but anyone that buys a performance car with the intention of going to the track will most likely upgrade this immediately. Still if this proves anything it really shows how far up the Elantra N punches.
Mr. weight to power has his winner already picked before the test started. I love the Type R (dc2) but that GT platform is an undeniable bargain - whipple and tires and call it a day
People love to complain about the mustang gts suspension being too soft. Gt stands for Grand touring, is supposed to be soft. It's not a track/performance car. That's just what the call the v8
Type R.... for the win 🙌🏻. I own a 2023 Rallye Red FL5 too! And I absolutely LOVEEEEEEE this car. I typically end up trading my cars every 4 years for something different but this will be the 1st car I ever keep. For me, that says alot. Car is absolutely phenomenal. Especially with the right mods to tweak the power and looks it's muaaaah (chefs kiss 🤌). Seeing all the videos like this saying the same thing about the Type R just reassures me I made the right pick.
Yes I own one of these and might be biased, but I am so glad all of these options exist today. All are amazing options and such amazing experiences for 2024. Great video, even better cars.
It would be cool to see this series carried up into more and more expensive price ranges, and taking the winner of the previous group to compete with the next. Next group could be 70 or 80k, BMW M2, Ct4-V Blackwing, C8 Corvette, Porsche Cayman, etc.
Great video. The N punches above its weight for the money. CTR launches very well for FWD car, and GRC could do better as its the only AWD car here. That's the only advantage that GRC has over CTR - if you guys did 1/4 mi instead of 0-60 I bet the difference between CTR and GRC would have been even greater in flavor of CTR. GRC is still great and I know its not a drag car but it is not very impressive in terms of 0-60 vs mid-2000s EVOs/STIs pulling 5 seconds flat (or better in some cases).
The Type R has NO weakness. It's the most practical, has the most room, fantastic gas mileage, low cost of ownership, the best reliability, the best inputs (steering, shifter, and chassis feel) also has the best sport bucket seats probably ever made, and greatest manual shifter ever made. It's arguably the greatest car ever made under 45kish dollars. It and the 6th Gen Camaro SS 1LE are the best performance cars/do it all cars ever made under 45k dollars. If you need a back seat, get the CTR, if not SS 1LE. But man, the CTR IS SPECIAL. It's literally a FWD Porsche Cayman, LITERALLY.
@davothegreat9990 fwd has no impact on the dynamics or characteristics in the handling. There is zero understeer, zero torque steer, and one of the best handling vehicles ever engineered. Blistering 100+k dollars vehicles on the Nurburgring, and other tracks across America. It rotates beautifully as if it was rwd, and pulls you out of the corners as if it was awd. Is it a straight line, drag car that's going to get you an insane 1/4 time out of the box? No.
@GERONIMO326 85% of people don't track their car. Elantra N isn't far behind and the ctr is definitely not 10k better car. It's overpriced and too big.
@davothegreat9990 then you obviously haven't driven one. The CTR is lighter than the Elantra N, they weigh roughly the same depending if it's manual or auto. The CTR has the best sport bucket seats ever made, best mechanical manual shifter ever, handles like it's on rails, made in JAPAN, fit and finish is LEAGUES ahead of every other car in it's segment, the Elantra N isn't even in the same ballpark. 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile times don't tell the tale. If you are a true driving enthusiast, the CTR is one the best cars ever made. If you're not, you make comments such as yourself. The CTR is worth EVERY penny it's priced at.
C'mon. Just like CAR AND DRIVER throughout history, it's casually mentioned that a car in the comparison test isn't really equipped as capably as the others. In this case, it's the Mustang. You didn't option the most aggressive suspension (MagneRide) option. Let's face it, without that, it's not going to turn in like the others. C'MON Edmunds. PS I'm a Honda guy.

They should have stated that the 5.0 starts at ~$42k and what options the one they had, had. Even with the GT package, its right at $50k. So not that far off from the Type R or GR.

I mean, the Type R holds the FWD production car record at other tracks so not sure what point that proves.
Lets all be honest here:
Civic Type-R is the car here but....... F*** those dealers with the 15-20k$ markup, juste because of that that car is way overprice for what it give
Mustang = great car, but..... not practical at all, its more like a week-end car, forget about it in the snow, its a terrible winter car
GR Corolla = Ahahahaah!!! Terrific car fom Toyota but....... This is a track car that can't track.......Yessss the transmission overheat after 2-3 hard lap... that is terrible, terrible. See GR corolla on fire over the net lol
Elantra N = yes, spec wise it is the worst, but it beat all the others cars with their biggest flaw:
There is no 15-20K$ markup on them unlike the civic type-r, The car is pratical (4 doors, fwd for winter driving) unlike the mustang, The car is ready for track all day long, it wont overheat or catchfire like the corrola GR.
Just to be clear I am big fan of Honda.
But for me Elantra N tick all the box, he is good at everything but master of none. Elantra N is the winner

For anyone wanting a new GT, you are better off buying a used gen 1. You can fix anything that needs fixing and mod it to make it faster than a new one and still be left with 20k in your pocket lol.
Cars in general...if you want anything but the most basic, base model econobox, it's WAY too easy to drop 50k+ on a car.
In all fairness they specced the shiet out of that mustang. Base manual without many options you're low 40s.
@gp5.082 A base GT is about 45k. If you add the performance pack with no other options it brings it past 50. 😳
@@C6BlueDevil So then don't add the performance pack lol. And the $45k you're quoting is with destination. CTR is $45k starting, + destination (but we're splitting hairs) but + the most important factor: dealer markups. Unless that's no longer a thing.

“Hard to keep it collected” “squirrelly” “sideways”…in other words, way more fun!
Sike...I bet the GR Corolla is funner and even the Type-R because of the insane amount of grip. Not fishtailing a heavy boat that's about to wrap around a pole.
Right lol!!
Didn’t time the race track either mustang would of dominated. Nothing more fun than winning except maybe spinning hahaha
Fun for doing donuts?😅
The Elantra is 10k less than the Civic so is the civic that much better? I would take the Elantra the bang for buck it one of best deals out there. Side note why mention 1/4 mile track then only post 0-60 times? The 1/4 mile is better way of showing how a car accelerates than 0-60.
The question wasn't which car is the better bargain. It was which is the better car in a specific price range.
@@downsouthlouisianaThat specific price range ($20k MSRP spread) is way too broad. It’s meaningless. I can get EN for under MSRP where I live, but the dealers are still asking $60k for a Type R here.

Type Raaawrrr All day long!!

Super light front end with confidence inspiring AWD system. I live in colder climates so this car checks all my boxes for needs. Has done amazing in the snow, and is too much fun!
The clumsy, awkward, unplanned commentary here shows how special channels like Savagegeese really are
I feel like the weighting of the autocross shouldn't be equal to the other categories because most people aren't willing to void their warranty so they can autocross it.

The 6sp variant still always gets praised but always falls just a tiny bit short of cars costing 10K+ more. 10K+ cheaper but somehow not fair to use the DCT, it's pretty funny almost like there's a NDA for having to make the Type R #1 no matter what, no matter by how little.

Or blow the rear diff!
Why would it
The results are not surprising, the EN is $10k - $25K less than the others, and that's only the MSRP...real-word prices are more like $15 - $30k less.
But the stiffness of its suspension its terrible even in the softest setting, a much better choice is the Elantra N
Center of gravity is trash compared to the EN.
@@eptdy high center of gravity affects high speed turn and grip on big track. It actually helps it rotate in short tracks like an autox.
Youll void the toyota warranty if they catch you going a mile over the speed limit. Good luck.
The term is power to weight
I have a 16 Mustang GT, and I absolutely love it and plan to keep it forever. Stock Mustang suspension is wallowy, but a few mods and good tires really wakes it up in the corners.
Until Hyundai scan the ECU log for overboost flags and bye bye warranty claim.

I wanted to like the comparison, but I can’t just get into these two. Sorry guys I’ve tried a few times now.

The Type R has NO weakness. It's arguably the greatest car ever made under 45kish dollars. It and the 6th Gen Camaro SS 1LE are the best performance cars/do it all cars ever made under 45k dollars. Fwd is its weakness. And too slow off the line.
@davothegreat9990 fwd has no impact on the dynamics or characteristics in the handling. There is zero understeer, zero torque steer, and one of the best handling vehicles ever engineered. So the mustang won with data. But you picked another car just because you wanted it to win 🙄...
How so?
The only category that won was acceleration. Sucked in the others.
Results were expected.
SoCal residents should know where this track is. Especially the golf guy still there
So all most cars here are of advantage with all wheel drive and quicker on paper, but failed to pick the Elantra DCT, but the manual instead ??😂😂😂
the elantra might score well in these events for the price, but good luck with any sort of longevity, its a hyundai/kia engine, its just not gonna keep the engine reliability long-term for anyone trying to daily drive one. which is sad, because it is a budget sport sedan that checks a lot of boxes
They should have stated that the 5.0 starts at ~$42k and what options the one they had, had. Even with the GT package, its right at $50k. So not that far off from the Type R or GR.
The mark ups on the type-R put it above on price. The Elantra N with a DCT would have killed the Civic, and on an endurance race it would not have overheated like the Civic.
@S.Madman Markups are ridiculous. Anytime who pays that should be ashamed.
My guess before watching the video.
1. Type R
2. GR
3.. Mustang
4. Elantra
Mustang ALL DAY EVERYDAY....
I own a GR Corolla, and had a 2021 Mustang GT PP, the fact they are similar prices is an absolute joke. The GR Corolla other than the driving experience, is a shitbox
Or you could watch the Savagegeese video that just dropped and save ~$15K on a used SS 1LE track weapon that will blow all these cars away.
CTR is a great vehicle but, Honda has lost their magic since the S2000. The AP1 I owned moons ago was truly special. My EN resembles the old ITR which I adored, Hyundai has the late 90s, early 2000s feel that Honda once possessed.
I’m extremely happy with my decision. I picked the Integra type S and I have one now for one month.
"Nice and tidy though there" at 4:38 - very Jeremy Clarkson.
Better than all those cars together is the driving performance of the 6th gen Camaro SS with its oustanding "Alpha" chassis
Where are the non included GR86/BRZ twins?
My favorite performance car under 50k (with tax credit) is the 2024 tesla model 3 performance. The low end torque is insane and it is so planted on the street. I know EVs are supposed to be soulless and boring but Im having a blast and ive owned many ehnthusiast cars.
Need to test EN with at least 3/4 gas. It takes that long for the car to give you full power if pumping from pump that was previously pumping regular gas
