Tangled hedgehog in need of help!

  • Entanglements are, sadly, a common rescue for us, but hedgehogs are amongst the least common species to have to be freed.
    This hedgehog was rushed into our hospital after the homeowner found it caught in garden netting. They had it cut it free but it was still badly tangled.
    With a few well placed cuts, our vet team soon had it free and, 48 hours later, it was able to go back to the wild!

    I normally won't drink out of tins..but if i ever buy any packs that have those plastic rings around the top of them..I always make sure i cut them before i throw them in the bin,in case a little animal or bird gets tangled in them.

    People still leaving nets at ground level. 😞 ˢⁱᵍʰ
    Great job to the vets for being so thorough and taking such caution to free the little poglet. 90 minutes wait? Heavens, if Simon had been taking a knee for 1½ hour, I'm sure his ankles and knees would be sore for a while after. I had a paper delivery job once. Kneeling down each time to grab and fold a newspaper left my toes in a state where I thought I had gotten gout! 😛

      You shouldn't get involved. Wild animals risk getting dependent or too friendly with humans or they may adapt in disfavor to themselves. You may move one day and the hedgehog and their offspring may die because they relied on you for extra food. Or they walk up to people who may have ill intentions. It's better for nature to take its course and admire them from a distance unless they're in danger due to human involvement; such as this video displays with the net.

    • @moepskie
      @moepskie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @manman2u There is no problem at all, really. The hedgehogs usually leave after a few weeks at most, with some new ones turning up in the meantime and leaving within a few weeks as well. With pretty much all of them not returning in the years thereafter. In my country they are actually an endangered species in recent years due to human involvement; getting ran over by cars in the thousands. The government even promotes helping out hedgehogs due to this. And even though we're feeding them, they remain very afraid of humans, including ourselves. We just put the food in the back of the yard, where it's dark, and admire them from a distance. As soon as they notice us they run away, even after getting fed for weeks. So yeah, it is better to get involved, because otherwise they will get ran over by cars during their search for food until they end up becoming extinct in the long run.

      A couple weeks ago I saw the first alive hedgehog in my life, in our garden! I heard some smacking noises in the bushes where our bird feeding house stands and I slowly aproached it. Then I saw him! He was a really big one, and he seemed to really enjoy the mealworms that had fallen down from the bird feeding house. 😀😊

    Please help me
    I have a chicken (that I think has hatched too early) that is fighting for its life and I don't know what to do...
    It has the embilicord still attached to it, along with membrane and other nutrients it needs
    I have put it on a warm bean bag thing and a lamp over it as when I found it after school it was really cold and the mother had hopped off the nest.
    I have put the mother back on nest.... so should I put the chick underneath her ? even though there are other healthy chicks with her?
    Thanks and God bless
    All advice is welcomed
