    I don't have Twitter, so here's my story: During Zoo Format, I showed up with a budget Phantasmal Spiral OTK deck to my locals. I played against a black wing player (19 y.o.) and when he realized he was loosing, he started crying and stalling for turns, repeating the sentence "I only lose because I didn't draw X". His friends (regulars) later told me they didn't want me at their locals, because they didn't know me and I made their friend cry. Not like I really planed on comming back anyways.

      I hate those kind of tribe mentality. How they hell they can grow as a store if each time new players come, they got treated right that. Some locals here are like that, new players come, no one approach to talk to him, and he left after the tourney over and never show up again.

    At my locals, there was a grown man somewhere in his thirties who was trying to trade something with a kid of about 13-14 years old. The trade he proposed was very obviously in his interest and the kid was going to suffer a huge loss if he accepted it, but he got strongarmed into it. The guy stupidly stuck around after that and the story of the trade made its way to the owner (I'm pretty sure one of the customers tipped him off, but I wasn't there to see that part, so I could be wrong), who dropped everything he was doing, told his assistant to mind the store for a few mins and barrelled into gameroom, where he physically lifted the guy out of his chair without saying a word, shoved him out the door and, without mincing words, told him to undo the trade he made with the kid right now. The trade was reversed while all of us were watching. The owner then kicked the man out of the store and told him he was never allowed to come back. 'If you're only here to scam a kid,' he said, 'then you're in the wrong store. You don't mess with kids. That's just not right.'

    My town's local library had a mini tournament going on for fun one time. I was running zombies(this was during GX era, so i was on that Zombie Madness structure deck) and one of the participants was running a deck centered around Mystic Tomato because in his words "Mystic Tomato is the most broken card ever made". When i attacked his set MT with my Vampire Genesis, he first tried to say that it can't be destroyed by battle and then tried activating the special summoning effect, attempting to summon Red Eyes Black Dragon. When i told him that not only does it not have a destruction protection effect, not only does the card need to be destroyed by battle to activate the effect, but also that it only summons dark monsters with 1500 or less attack, he tried to tell me that the card was misprinted and that it was supposed to say "Any Dark Monster" instead off the attack point restriction. When i pointed out that everything he said was factually incorrect, he then threw a massive temper tantrum, saying that i was cheating and that i didn't know what i was talking about. He swiped the table, scattering his cards all over the floor, revealing that he had 20 copies of Mystic Tomato in it.

    Back when a friend and I first started getting into locals (this was just before Chaos was a thing) we were at a weekly tournament. It was a mix of good, experienced players and kids that had to be told you can't have 3 different sets of sleeves on your cards during the tourney.
    After winning my first-round match, I walk over and see my friend still playing against one of these little kids. The kid is running a random pile of whatever big monsters he has, filling it out with other random cards he barely understands. Apparently, my friend's deck -COMPLETELY- crapped out in the first game, did its thing and won the second, and he's well on his way to winning game 3. This kid had gotten a couple of large monsters as well as a creature in face-down defense position onto the field. But looking at the game state it's clear that my friend has the long game won. Especially after he makes things run a bit longer by dropping Swords of Revealing Light. The effect triggers, flipping up the kid's monster... revealing WEATHER REPORT. This allows the kid to destroy the Swords and win with the extra damage the following turn. The kid literally did not know what Weather Report did. My friend had to explain it to him, walking him through how he'd just won the match.

    • @jamesruth100
      @jamesruth100 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      I've seen this kinda issue crop up. People think that they can activate any effect _except_ the ones ash covers, where as ash doesn't care what effect you're activating, all it cares about is that somewhere on your card there's an effect that lets you search/draw, dump, or summon from the deck.

    • @mateusrp1994
      @mateusrp1994 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Its because Branded Lost is worded in a weird way, and because activating a card, activating the effect of a card, and the effect of a card, are all similarly but distinct things (Branded Lost protects the first two but not the 3rd, which is why Ash works, but its worded in a way to make you think it protects all 3).

    • @harukonoe4248
      @harukonoe4248 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      It's the good ol "negating the activation" vs "negating the effect" argument. Ash doesn't negate the activation, it negates the effect. Branded lost protects from activation negation. This means you can't negate using borreload savage dragon (because that card negates activation) but ash works. Veiler and imperm also works as they blanket negate the effect of a card, not the activation.

    • @moonjelly5
      @moonjelly5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@jamesruth100 I just learned that a couple of weeks ago when I realized I could use Ash to negate a Labyrinth card that could search (which was not the effect my opponent was activating). Since I didn't know if I could I just asked "Can I Ash that?" He said yes and forfeited the game.

    I also don't have twitter, but my locals story is: One dude (I'll call him Carl, late teens) was starting a pretty bad gambling addiction when it came to playing for cards, and started upping the ante betting more than just cards. So my friend Travis who had the the most valuable binders and arguably the best player there, knew Carl needed to be taught a lesson before it got worse. So what Travis did was he goes goes up to Carl and offers to start playing for cards. They play and Travis wins, Carl was pretty arrogant and felt like he was better than everyone, so he said to keep playing, betting more and more shit . Now Carl and Travis are friends, so Carl didn't really think Travis was gonna take his binders, his new Jordans, and his mom's car. So when it comes time to closing up shop, Carl's like "Yo Trav can I have my stuff back?" And Travis was like "Nah. You lost that shit fair and square. That's my stuff now." So Carl was pleading with this dude, begging for his stuff back, And Travis was like "Alright fine, I'll give you all your stuff back, on the condition that you call your mom, tell her you need to be picked up, and tell her what happened. And I will give everything back." Dude must've gotten the bitching of a lifetime, cuz that dude never played anyone for cards again.

    One of my locals is located in a "flood area" meaning the streets and sidewalks turn into rivers if it rains for 2 hours or more.
    The store owner told me that they got trapped once during a heavy rain while a tournament was ongoing. The building has this big stone step you have to cross to descend to the store and if the flood water crossed that step, the building pretty much turns into a pool.
    They had to put the iron curtain and barricade themselves to prevent the building from flooding. The owner told me: _it was like Noah's ark with me trapped with a bunch of animals_.
    They had to stay there till 1 AM or something, and after freeing themselves went together to get some burritos for dinner.

This kid had actually topped our locals the last 3 weeks in a row and really new his stuff despite his age. I really didn't know how tributing worked and asked the judge if Bystial Baldrake could tribute an opponents monster for cost of its effect. The judge and 3 senior players all deliberated over it for a couple minutes before deciding it could, allowing me to tribute over the kids Dragoon...

    I've got quite a few, since I worked at a store. My favorites are
    1) During a Magic midnight pre-release, a customer had informed me that the police were looking for the owner. I approached to confirm, and asked what the issue was so that I could relay the information. Turns out that a player who registered for the event started lighting fireworks in the parking lot, and the apartment complex across the street reported it. It was the death of our midnight pre-releases at the store, so we audibled to the local IHOP from then on
    2) Our Yugioh scene was dying, and the owner was getting super salty towards the players. I was looking at our stock, and saw that we were almost out of the current set (we just got a case a few days earlier). I asked when we sold the packs, and the owner told me that our Yugioh guys were just buying all of our product before any of our customers had a chance to! Instead of telling them to chill and making sure we had stock to sell, the owner flipped out and blamed the players on a Facebook video that weren't playing there anymore BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE PRODUCT!

    Some years ago, I was in a Force of Will tournament, and a YGO local was taking place the same day. One small shop was the only locale to hold these tournaments because it was the only OTS store in town and the other venue was filled to the brim with MTG players. Problem was, it was a pre-release torunament for us, so it was packed. But the YGO players apparently also had something big going on (I don't know what it was) - in short, it was cramped. So cramped in fact, that some dudes decided to play on the windowsill. Nobody complained, as long as everyone got to play.
    But two small rooms (spearated by a sliding door) full of dudes with the windows blocked by more dudes means, no matter the level of hygiene or lack thereof, the air would eventually get stuffy and musky. And then some guy showed up late to the YGO tournament. He slammed the sliding door open and barked "Open the windows, you fuckers! It stinks like ass in here!". Well, the dudes on the windowsills wouldn't budge and refused to open the windows. After complaining about the smell for a while, he took out a can of Axe Bodyspray and started going ham on both rooms. Took people a while to realize he wasn't stopping and then grabbed the can. But by then, a disgusting mix of musk, bodyspray, and thick air basically hijacked the tournaments. The store owner came in to see what the ruckus was about and immediately went "Okay, you animals. Either you air the rooms right now, or I'll register the tournaments as cancelled." Suddenly, the YGO players got really efficient, finished their rounds and noted the results before swarming outside to avoid pissing off the owner. This was the only time it got this bad, and since then, open windows are mandatory during all tournaments, even in the dead of winter.
    Now, I won't deny the YGO folks weren't the only sweaters present. But unlike them, we all went outside for some fresh air and left the door open between rounds, while the YGO players stayed cooped up in their room. Since then, the store relocated, and the new place has great air conditioning. Plus, stinkers get immediately booted, and the mix of getting kicked out and shamed seems to have worked on the regulars.

    Watching this reminded me of a story:
    So, the locals I was playing at at the time had 2 Yu-Gi-Oh events, a casual and a competitive. The difference between the 2 was in the casual event you weren't allowed to play decks that had been meta in the past 6 months. Basically, new players or people that wanted to try out fun decks could play casual, while experienced players who wanted to play with or against the meta could enter the competitive tournament, where I think the prizing was also a lot better.
    So, after about a month or 2 of me going there and playing in the casual event with my slightly modified cyberse starter deck (literally the first one released) sometime around the release of Circuit Break, a guy shows up who had been playing in the competitive events with either SPYRAL or Zoodiac (can't remember which one since I never played against them). After the third round (not enough people for more) someone who knew the meta reported him to the owner of the locals, the guy got disqualified and banned from the casual events but could continue playing in the competitive events. That is, until he pushed over a shelf that had a bunch of stuff on it while screaming about how it was unfair since another player in the casual event was playing a meta deck. The other guy was playing pure Invoked, with cards like Compuls to stall a couple of turns while they tried to find Aleister or a light to summon Mechaba.
    Never saw that guy again, stopped going to that locals a few months later because they stopped hosting Yu-Gi-Oh and focused entirely on Magic and Warhammer, and now I don't even attend locals partially because of that event

    This is back around 2006-2007. I was at a locals where rules weren't really followed, and there wasn't really a judge to enforce them anyway. No banlist, no deck checks, etc.
    I, being a dumb kid, thought that the "side deck" was a 15 card deck you could choose to draw from instead of your main deck. This sounds overpowered, except I was playing cat's ear tribe/raregold armor/wave motion cannon as my only even semi-coherent strategy, and thus still lost most of my games.
    Also, I came back a couple of years later after my friend taught me the concept of +/- in cards, only to hear that people over 14 weren't allowed to play at locals there anymore.

I protested because I knew a guy entering the tournament playing Shaddolls. I said that other decks need their synchro/xyz to even compete with shaddolls. After 2-0ing him he got upset and started to cry, we had about 30 minutes until the next round so after me and the judge helped him feel better, he asked if I could duel his other deck, I said sure, and he pulled out Post Dark wing blast Black Wing, and a notebook where his moves were written down. What happened next was a 20 minute slog of him reading the book, summoning a thing, on repeat until he had triple Assault and some random level 8 synchro.

    I've had quite a few experiences at my locals.
    When I was brand new, I was told Ash blossom couldn't hit any Main-deck Drytron effects because of whatever cheating reason he gave. When learning about the rulings from some friends, it led me to become well learned in as many rulings as I can remember due to the fact that I don't want to see people run from the game because they're lied to about different rulings.
    One day, we had a brand new player join in, he whipped out the ol' rubber banded deck box, with no sleeves, and was running 1 link starter deck. He had all the link monsters in his main deck and proceeds to normal summon link spider. Meanwhile, me and my 2 acquaintances were running meta decks, decided to try and explain the game and mechanics to him on the fly. I offered to drop from the tournament and teach him, even though it was paid entry, but he refused, promptly lost his match and dipped. I felt bad, but also, I tried everything I could, and it sucks to watch people just leave the game without even trying.

    when I was like....14ish??? I remember one particular weekend looking forward to going to my locals, because I had made some friends with the other 12-14 year old regulars. There was a weather forecast for light snow that weekend, but i figured if it was light enough I could just trudge over. Its only a few blocks. The next day my family and I were snowed in during one of the worst blizzards in my cities' history. It even knocked out some of the power around town. Needless to say, I didn't go. Spent the whole day shoveling. Next week, most of the snow had cleared up, BUT it was mother's day weekend, and didn't want to go. But my mom said that I had been waiting all week to go to the store since it snowed, and knew I was bummed out. She said as long as i promised to be back before 5, that it would be fine.
    So I get to the store, and there's less people there than usual. I guess some people don't put Yu-Gi-Oh! over their own mothers after all. So anyway, I sign up, and I'm just in time to catch the first round. The guy I was going against was going to get a pass for this match until I showed up and made it an even bracket. We sit down, roll the die, and get started. We're a few minutes in when some more new people walk in. And one of them goes, "WOW!!!! none of you must have a mom to care about. Y'all like this card game more than your own family, GOD DAAAYUUUMMN!!!" It was playful banter that everyone near him was in on. There was a lot of back and forth. I remember one guy going, "Bro, you're in here too, you can't talk."
    Even one of the cashiers/judges piped up, and said, "Nah, he's right, some of you were here last week, helping me shovel and salt the fucking sidewalk, so you fat asses could play your fucking children's card game." Everyone was really quiet after that, with the exception of my opponent and I, who were fucking cackling in the corner table we were assigned to. That shit caught us like a hockey puck to the jaw.
    Imagine being the store owner, during one of the worst winters of the year. Digging through your shop's cellar for the salt and shovel in the fucking dark, when you here the methodic tapping of arthritis riddled, battered, power shuffling, digits at your front door. Expecting to see your employees, but instead there being 7, maybe 8, men all cupping their hands together to see through the glass, and hearing that 1 dreaded word muffled by the 3inch thick glass separating you from the unwashed savages...."Tournament?"

    Upset I missed the Twitter thread this time because I went to locals once and literally sat down next to the Pharaoh Atem. The poor Floo player paired against him didn’t stand a chance as during game 1 he summoned all three god cards while announcing out loud all of his actions. During game 2 however, he managed to assemble the pieces of Exodia because instead of drawing from his deck for turn, he would whip open his binder and pull out a piece from there. After winning round 1 he packed up his things and left, not saying a word in the process.

    Its funny how much a story can change over the span of eleven years lol I was friends with the Spellbook player and one of the TO's was an ex. The thief and the Spellbook player were just friends (not best friends) and the thief wasn't dragged out of her car. What had happened was that she was seen on security cameras walking out of the store around the time the deck went missing and came back in. She wasn't seen on camera taking the box because she herself was a thief and knew about the cameras, but was near the area when it went missing and took advantage of the store's blindspots. An ex thief who also happened to be a player at that tournament looked over the cameras to help out. He told my ex that the thief probably put the deck in her car when she stole it and came back in to continue playing so she wouldn't arouse suspicion and people wouldn't think it was her since she didn't have the deck in her bag. He told my ex to ask to check her trunk and under her seats when the tournament was over and she was out on her way to get Taco Bell. If she wasn't guilty, she would've let them look. But if she didn't, she most likely had it hiding in her car. I'm not sure why the thief let them search her car when she stole it, but the Spellbook player ended up finding it under her passenger seat. The whole part with confronting her about being friends and after was accurate though. It's kind of ironic she got caught because of how often she stole and got away with it, but it just so happened that she was caught because another thief who stopped stealing from people happened to be around.

    I'm from Mexico, and back when I was actively playing, i.e. circa 2005-2008, I used to hang around in a mall dedicated to anime and other geeky stuff in Mexico City. There were small tournaments on sundays, and while it was something regular, the fact that this mall was entirely closed with little to no air circulation, turned it into a goddamn sauna room by the time tournaments were on. By 2 pm, it stank like the devil's armpit, and it didn't help there was this guy who was like a human skunk.
    We called him 'the Ancestor', because he was a balding guy in his early 30s but looked way older. And the mfer stank like crazy. He used to always show up in a yugioh themed shirt, and you could see the sweat stains in the armpit area everytime he moved his arms, his breath was straight up rancid and he had a distinct smell like that of rotting milk products. He ended getting banned from the mall in late 2007 after making a kid throw up while they were playing. I saw him in another games shop nearby a few months later, sitting alone in a table.
    If I were to describe him, imagine Trevor from GTA 5, with a pair of huge glasses and speaking with a very noticeable lisp. Always wearing combat boots, grey denim jeans and his yugioh shirt with Gaia the Dragon Champion. Also extremely vindictive and hostile, like to the point where none of the regulars wanted him nearby. And he lasted that long playing because he was friends with a shop owner, the whole ban incident was because a kid threw up in front of him, and the Ancestor began berating the kid, and almost got his face kicked in by the kid's dad. The dad threatened to call the cops, and the Ancestor got banned to prevent the mall from having a bad rep (side note, they sold LOTS of bootleg anime products and modified gaming consoles).

    That story about the guy going to his car and getting a gun reminds me of one time at my own locals.
    The match had ended (forgot the round, but irrelevant), and one table had one of my friends at it and his opponent got extremely frustrated that my friend linked-down to deal with his Mystic Mine deck and beat them in the first duel. The guy didn't side deck out anything for the second duel and lost again using the same strategy. The guy was also deliberately slow playing after my friend would link down to deal with the Mystic Mine.
    The guy threatened to shoot up the store because not only was he frustrated at my friend, but also believed you couldn't link-down, so when the judges told him my friend could do that, he said that.
    The store owner was there and quickly reminded him he was in *Texas,* so more than likely roughly half of the people there were packing heat. He stormed out and wasn't seen at that store for a few months after that (per being at least banned from even entering the store for a month)
    Afaik, he's only shown up once after that.
    The guy was known for having an extremely loaded trade/sell binder with starlights and other high rarity cards. So loaded, in fact, some of us theorized he wasn't using "clean" money to get them.
    Outside that single guy, the players that go to that store is very respectable towards each other.
    So respectable, in fact, you could enter the locals tournament with things like an Exodia deck. Sure, you'll probably get some sort of question like "An Exodia deck?!" but they understand some people are there to just have a good time.

HOWEVER this person has no understanding on how to take care of cards (we had to convince him to sleeve up his cards prior to this) so what he does is he stuffs his entire collection into his backpack as if they were toys and shows everyone the pile of supremely damaged cards. At least one person cried in the bathroom as we looked deeper and see the ulti rares

    Funniest thing I saw was someone show up in a Jack Atlas cosplay, and instead of saying something like "Your King is here!" Dude just says "Get your game on!"...I had to bury my face behind my binder so i didnt bust out laughing. He played Performapals, btw.

    I always wore a scarf to tourneys. Not for fashion for survival, I would spray perfume on it and cover my nose during the pairings rush. Please wash your asses, shower, and wear deodorant
