One of my new rescue boy cats kept drinking water, using the litter box (soft, not formed) lumps, and was loosing weight. After a vet visit he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism (didn't even think that was a thing with cats) he is now on medication and will get tested in 2 weeks to see if adjustment is needed. Do you have a cat food with organ 🫀 meat in it? That's an important part of the overall diet. Cats will normally eat all the tasty bits of a bird or mice and leave the shell of the carcass behind.
Thanks for this video. I have been keeping an eye on my cat’s poop for a long time because I knew that it was an important healthy indicator. My cat poops normally every second day so I track that, and if it goes longer, I adjust his laxative (dulcolax). He seems to be prone to constipation so this laxative has become a regular part of his feeding. This morning’s poop was perfect, per your video - long tube, dark brown, just the right firmness. Good poop shows up in his behavior, too - he’s more active, eats better, and is more affectionate.
Since putting my kittens on fresh food I’ve noticed their stools are darker, they're not as big, less frequent and best of all nowhere near as smelly. It’s made me realise how little of the cat foods like Gourmet is actually digested and used by a cat. I’ve mentioned multiple times on this channel about how the fact we took Tigger to the vet as soon as we saw blood (red), it allowed us to have 14 months to keep him comfortable and say goodbye. You really can't take faeces lightly and a great advantage to house cats is that you can monitor it. My problem is both my cats used all three boxes, they are a litter of two so they’ll share the same scent and are not territorial with their litter. If we have a problem now and there’s no outward sign we'll have to take both to the vet.
Was your cat healthy? I also switched my cat's food to a more healthier option and i noticed the stool is getting darker and thinner a little. I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow but i just wanted to ask about it, I’d really appreciate a reply!

The other was cured of hyperthyroidism (radioactive iodine) but now has ckd, IBS, & HOCM. I’m not sure if you have already covered this topic but it would be great to see a video about IBS in cats. luckily it was a worming issue with mine but it could be something more serious. The animal shelter in my county has a clinic and it was only a $50 trio. Maybe try to see what yours says i hope its not serious!@@GloryEscuzar

My feral feline has always had hard stools, usually in short, round pieces. She eats can food and fresh water is always available. Can you please give me some idea about to help her? Maybe a high fiber diet? I give my cat royal canine fiber response dry food and a lot of wet food with added water in it. It works with his constipation
Hi Doc! Thank you for the informative videos presented with this subject. Can we see a video with the cats with kidney disease and their bowel health. They are constipated with dehydration ! How often should they pass bowels? Before anima, passed a little black nugget which were the culprits as 3 of those before seen loose formed long stool! Pumpkin color as given pumpkin. We gave an anima, it cleared but then constipated now again for 2 days ! Will luke warm water to cleanse her colon or an Anima ok? How often can they use Animas?
My cats have what appears to be roundish flat matter in the litter box. I cannot see if it is urine or feces so I don’t know if it is unhealthy or not. Any suggestions? Maybe others have the same dilemma & could use a video mention of it. Thank you for the great videos!
Roundish flat matter? Try switching to something like Sustainably Yours or Pretty Litter; the white color will help you figure out what you're dealing with!
I have a lynx point Siamese manx. He was over bred and has almost no tail segments at all, and has a tilt to his hind hips, and one hind leg is slightly longer because of this. Otherwise he is perfectly normal. Occasionally he will randomly drop a bit of poop around the house or will have a half finished poop stuck to his rear. He also will occasionally have a bout of diarrhea even though his diet doesn't change. (Half Limited ingredient kibble/ half wet food) I don't know if his diet is the cause or if it's physical because he was over bred.
I give my cat both dry and wet food. The dry food has a few different coloured pellets, one of which is a medium/dark olive green colour - I've noticed that her poops seem good, but they're pretty much the exact same colour as that cat food! I want to try something different, but this was one that she actually seems to enjoy! All seems good, happy, active, alert, I'd just prefer the usual colour!

Our girl sometimes has a stool that is half one color and the other half is a different color. Usually, this is followed by diarrhea or soft stool and I assume it is an IBD flare up.
Ty. If my cat has round worm or hookworm, will I see that in her stool. She has vomited, lost weight, and her stool(the last segment) is outside the box and is dry looking. I have spent over 400. O0, and I'm thinking worms since she also has lost weight.

Great video👏🏼👏🏼 I have a question: we use peewee (treated, safe pellets), our kitty likes it and we find it much easier to use then sand (we only scoop out the poop, the pee autumatically goes down thru the sifter part and gets absorbed, and we just stir the box and empty that bottom part every night). The pellets spreads so much less thru the house, it smells less without being scented and is not an environmental problem to get rid of. STILL, when you say you use pellets, people tend to look at you like you turned your cat vegan👀 Like you are doing something wrong or depriving the cat of sand. My question is: why is safe pellets (treated not to have pine oils etc) not recommended more often, and are they at all included in ”studies that show cats prefer clumping sand”? Because of the environmental issue with clumping sand, I think this is worth talking about. I also read that pellets prevent bacteria from spreding around the house because it usually stays in the box or very near it, not stuck in paws and flying around. 😻❤️🤗many thanks🐾🐾🐾
I use litter made from corn and cassava (sp?), and there is a "large grain" option. Sounds like maybe same as pellets? Also great at clumping hard. I have 2 cats and they both love it! It biodegrades so fast... you can even flush it if you let it sit in toilet for 15 minutes first to dissolve clumps. Sustainably Yours is brand name. It also lasts longer than clay and all of us have fewer allergy symptoms!!!
I had potatoes on the floor and my wellis are near the front door. Besides using the litter trays she has been stopped by us crouching over the potatoes and wellies as if about to poo. Obviously both smell of soil. I can’t not keep my wellies inside but how do I stop such weird behaviour.yThanks.

My cat is an indoor cat and therefore it’s easy for me to keep a check on his poop, but what about those people who let their cats outside. How will they ever know if something is wrong with their cat if they can’t inspect their poop?
My kitten had been in his whole life till a week ago and he refuses to use the litter box we have provided. He has diarrhea and is drinking a lot of water cause of it. I think he might have worms but is that why he is refusing to use the litter box? I need some answers if you can.
Thanks for this topic. Our 1 y/o cat has had diarrhea a couple of times before which cleared up within a day or two... but he had two bouts of explosive diarrhea within a 3 day period (thank goodness it was an enclosed litter box). The diarrhea were watery and had bright red blood. We're currently giving him 1 ml of Albon daily for 1 to 2 weeks. We're only feeding him pureena one gentle dry food while we're treating him... (no wet food & no treats). So far so good. Thank goodness his medication is in liquid form given by syringe to the side of his mouth... it was a nightmare trying to give him pills when he was a little sick a few months ago. I learned the hard way that you can't give pills to a cat the same way you give pills to a dog... any tips on medicating techniques for cats would be extremely helpful.

My cat is pooping GREY, I can't understand why. They have giardia and I've been treating them, they still poop grey. Vet told me it's giardia, but they both had giardia and one of them pooped brown color, now it turned grey too!

My kitten only eats boiled chicken and she's not pooping at all. We trying to change her diet but she won't eat anything else other than boiled chicken. Really need advice please.
First thing, if a cat is eating but nothing's coming out the back end, that can quickly become a medical emergency - talk to a vet. I wouldn't feed rice to a cat - they're obligate carnivores and get almost all their nutrition from animals. Meat, offal, bones - but just meat alone is not enough. We have had and have cats with digestive issues, so we make homemade cat food. Our cats don't like raw, so we roast whole thighs and de-bone them, add cooked organ meats, bone meal and other supplements, and throw it all in a food processor. As a bonus, their poops are usually odorless, so if something stinks we know something might be wrong.
@@edjs we went to a vet, the vet said my kitten is fine, just needs to change diet for the poop to come out, the vet recommended a specific food which we bought, and my kitten still doesn't eat.. So now I don't know what to do..

I'm no expert (1st time actually having a cat)... but my understanding is they recommended having one litter box more than cats: 1 cat = 2 boxes, 3 cats = 4 boxes, etc. They also recommend cleaning (scooping) the boxes daily and fully cleaning the boxes every few weeks (by emptying and washing the boxes). I admit that I only have one box for our one cat... I scoop daily and I fully wash every two months or so. I might occasionally skip a day of scooping due to "life", but never more than a day otherwise the poor cat wouldn't have enough room & litter to do his business. Although it's recommended that our one cat should have two litter boxes, our apartment can only comfortably accommodate one box (along with his cat trees, water fountain, bowls, beds, etc). Oh, and having at least 3 inches of litter depth is key... I add more whenever it drops to 2 inches. (BTW, I own one extra litter pan that I take out from storage (closet) so I can use it temporarily while I wash & dry his enclosed box and not waste perfectly good litter). Granted, it might appear to be a lot of work, but not really if you account owning the same number of dogs and add up the time/effort of walking them several times a day in comparison. [TBH the most effort has been in making sure our cat drinks enough water. Just recently gave him for his birthday a stainless steel water fountain in the shape of a sink with a spigot. (He didn't take to the popular flower fountain.) Otherwise without it, the only way he'd drink was for me to give him fresh cold water from the bathroom sink while he'd sit on the toilet with me holding the bowl for him ... he'd sit there drinking for at least 5 minuets.] *TL:DR* Scoop daily. Wash every few weeks. & if you have the room; use one more litter box than number of cats owned.

I don't know if I could handle 1 more. I do need to get into the habit of cleaning them every day. I'm thinking of switching to a different litter box; self-cleaning or one I saw where a lever is used to push the stuff into a much bigger bin than I've seen on any other box. Hi there, I’m new to cats and adopted two kittens a few months ago. I’ve been feeding them the Stella and Chewy’s brand, and they seem to like it, but their poops are hard. They go every day, but I sometimes think the male cat is straining a little. Not sure if this is something I should worry about or if there’s something I should do. I like the food otherwise. Hello, yes I do add extra filtered water to my kitties food. I use frozen raw and my kitty has very firm poo as well. Sometimes I do think she's a bit constipated. I used to add small amount of pure pumpkin and that helped tremendously and she loved it, now she's meh about it. So water is my option. Mine is 11 so a little older. My cat has hard time pooping, when it comes out it's small & very hard. He has lost weight although he still have a great appetite & eat well, he drinks a lot too. I put pumpkin, a little coconut or olive oil & water in his food but still has a hard time pooping. I just spend 10000 dollars on my dog surgery & have little saving. I know the vet exams going to wipe me out, any infos in what my cat has or what can I try. I keep looking at videos & reading comments. Thank you

i was hoping to feed my cat some veggies and fruits and i've tried feeding him squash and carrots and brocolli, sadly there is no success, he is born dec.9,2022. exo-persian long coat, he is now 3kilos, tried feeding him rare salmon, chicken liver, beef,chicken and pork grounds, but he barely eats it, so am stuck with royal canin kitten dry cat food, and wet food pouches yet i found something like what you said about black with streak of blood kind of poop, and its smells stinky rare meats. Now i am a bit worried, i will investigate his poop for now just to make sure. So after watching 2 of your "Cat Poop Specials" (we couldn't find #3) I wish to thank you for such a great presentation of such a subject. You really did well. But the subject that I need the information on you touched but did not go into causes and the treatment cannot be administered until I know the cause as you had stated. The problem if you so wonder is the dry, segmented poop. Our cat is not dehydrated or so I think because he urinates very regularly and we have a method of know how much water he takes in. I really wish to speak to you or message but I don't know how to reach you or if you even want to be bothered. I am not looking for free information so I can be considered a cash customer. Two questions lingering in mind. Firstly, a cat pooping yellowish for a week or more but there is no other problem like weight loss or dehydration then what is required to do ? Secondly, if the poop comes partly brown and partly yellow what does it indicate ?

Much like humans , and part of life . I follow a lot of rules that I would with my own human patients. We are much alike . But I also follow up with a specialist, the Vet . It can be easy to help your cat , much like just paying attention to a child and the daily life. Unfortunately cats rarely let us know when something isn’t right , so please spend time just watching and doing a little detective work on a daily bases , it could save you a lot of heartache and money in the long run. The key with anything is early diagnosis

I think MiraLAX is better to use than Ducolax. I think it is an eighth of a teaspoon. But definitely ask your vet before using.

My feral feline has always had hard stools, usually in short, round pieces. She eats can food and fresh water is always available. Can you please give me some idea about to help her? Maybe a high fiber diet? I give my cat royal canine fiber response dry food and a lot of wet food with added water in it. It works with his constipation

Before anima, passed a little black nugget which were the culprits as 3 of those before seen loose formed long stool! Pumpkin color as given pumpkin.
We gave an anima, it cleared but then constipated now again for 2 days ! Will luke warm water to cleanse her colon or an Anima ok?

My cats have what appears to be roundish flat matter in the litter box. I cannot see if it is urine or feces so I don’t know if it is unhealthy or not. Any suggestions? Maybe others have the same dilemma & could use a video mention of it.

Roundish flat matter? Try switching to something like Sustainably Yours or Pretty Litter; the white color will help you figure out what you're dealing with!
I have a lynx point Siamese manx. He was over bred and has almost no tail segments at all, and has a tilt to his hind hips, and one hind leg is slightly longer because of this. Otherwise he is perfectly normal. Occasionally he will randomly drop a bit of poop around the house or will have a half finished poop stuck to his rear. He also will occasionally have a bout of diarrhea even though his diet doesn't change. (Half Limited ingredient kibble/ half wet food) I don't know if his diet is the cause or if it's physical because he was over bred.

I give my cat both dry and wet food. The dry food has a few different coloured pellets, one of which is a medium/dark olive green colour - I've noticed that her poops seem good, but they're pretty much the exact same colour as that cat food! I want to try something different, but this was one that she actually seems to enjoy! All seems good, happy, active, alert, I'd just prefer the usual colour!

Hello! I'm beginning to love this channel and this video was great. You said the poop should be uniform in color, but didn't address if it means anything if your cats have different shades of brown. Is this anything worth noting?
Our girl sometimes has a stool that is half one color and the other half is a different color. Usually, this is followed by diarrhea or soft stool and I assume it is an IBD flare up.
Ty. If my cat has round worm or hookworm, will I see that in her stool. She has vomited, lost weight, and her stool(the last segment) is outside the box and is dry looking. I have spent over 400. O0, and I'm thinking worms since she also has lost weight.

Great video👏🏼👏🏼 I have a question:
we use peewee (treated, safe pellets), our kitty likes it and we find it much easier to use then sand (we only scoop out the poop, the pee autumatically goes down thru the sifter part and gets absorbed, and we just stir the box and empty that bottom part every night). The pellets spreads so much less thru the house, it smells less without being scented and is not an environmental problem to get rid of.
STILL, when you say you use pellets, people tend to look at you like you turned your cat vegan👀
Like you are doing something wrong or depriving the cat of sand.
My question is: why is safe pellets (treated not to have pine oils etc) not recommended more often, and are they at all included in ”studies that show cats prefer clumping sand”? Because of the environmental issue with clumping sand, I think this is worth talking about. I also read that pellets prevent bacteria from spreding around the house because it usually stays in the box or very near it, not stuck in paws and flying around. 😻❤️🤗many thanks🐾🐾🐾
I use litter made from corn and cassava (sp?), and there is a "large grain" option. Sounds like maybe same as pellets? Also great at clumping hard. I have 2 cats and they both love it! It biodegrades so fast... you can even flush it if you let it sit in toilet for 15 minutes first to dissolve clumps. Sustainably Yours is brand name. It also lasts longer than clay and all of us have fewer allergy symptoms!!!

What about smell? Are there different odors? It is difficult to tell when the box also has urine in it.
I had potatoes on the floor and my wellis are near the front door. Besides using the litter trays she has been stopped by us crouching over the potatoes and wellies as if about to poo. Obviously both smell of soil. I can’t not keep my wellies inside but how do I stop such weird behaviour.yThanks.

Anyway, there are basically no good reviews on the Petkit Pura X and your videos are so amazing I am sure it would perform well. Thanks for this topic. Our 1 y/o cat has had diarrhea a couple of times before which cleared up within a day or two... but he had two bouts of explosive diarrhea within a 3 day period (thank goodness it was an enclosed litter box). The diarrhea were watery and had bright red blood. We're currently giving him 1 ml of Albon daily for 1 to 2 weeks. We're only feeding him pureena one gentle dry food while we're treating him... (no wet food & no treats).
So far so good. Thank goodness his medication is in liquid form given by syringe to the side of his mouth... it was a nightmare trying to give him pills when he was a little sick a few months ago.
I learned the hard way that you can't give pills to a cat the same way you give pills to a dog... any tips on medicating techniques for cats would be extremely helpful.

First thing, if a cat is eating but nothing's coming out the back end, that can quickly become a medical emergency - talk to a vet.
I wouldn't feed rice to a cat - they're obligate carnivores and get almost all their nutrition from animals. Meat, offal, bones - but just meat alone is not enough. We have had and have cats with digestive issues, so we make homemade cat food. Our cats don't like raw, so we roast whole thighs and de-bone them, add cooked organ meats, bone meal and other supplements, and throw it all in a food processor. As a bonus, their poops are usually odorless, so if something stinks we know something might be wrong.
@@edjs we went to a vet, the vet said my kitten is fine, just needs to change diet for the poop to come out, the vet recommended a specific food which we bought, and my kitten still doesn't eat.. So now I don't know what to do..
@@papi9582 Did your vet mention cat lax? The kind that comes in a tube. But would the kitten be too young to take it. It doesn't taste bad, I tried it once before I gave to my cats, not much taste to it. It does help them poop.

Great question! A cat should definitely be pooping daily. Any less is indicative of constipation.

I'm no expert (1st time actually having a cat)... but my understanding is they recommended having one litter box more than cats: 1 cat = 2 boxes, 3 cats = 4 boxes, etc. They also recommend cleaning (scooping) the boxes daily and fully cleaning the boxes every few weeks (by emptying and washing the boxes).
I admit that I only have one box for our one cat... I scoop daily and I fully wash every two months or so. I might occasionally skip a day of scooping due to "life", but never more than a day otherwise the poor cat wouldn't have enough room & litter to do his business.
Although it's recommended that our one cat should have two litter boxes, our apartment can only comfortably accommodate one box (along with his cat trees, water fountain, bowls, beds, etc).
Oh, and having at least 3 inches of litter depth is key... I add more whenever it drops to 2 inches. (BTW, I own one extra litter pan that I take out from storage (closet) so I can use it temporarily while I wash & dry his enclosed box and not waste perfectly good litter).
Granted, it might appear to be a lot of work, but not really if you account owning the same number of dogs and add up the time/effort of walking them several times a day in comparison.
[TBH the most effort has been in making sure our cat drinks enough water. Just recently gave him for his birthday a stainless steel water fountain in the shape of a sink with a spigot. (He didn't take to the popular flower fountain.)
Otherwise without it, the only way he'd drink was for me to give him fresh cold water from the bathroom sink while he'd sit on the toilet with me holding the bowl for him ... he'd sit there drinking for at least 5 minuets.]

Scoop daily.
Wash every few weeks.
& if you have the room; use one more litter box than number of cats owned.

I don't know if I could handle 1 more. I do need to get into the habit of cleaning them every day. I'm thinking of switching to a different litter box; self-cleaning or one I saw where a lever is used to push the stuff into a much bigger bin than I've seen on any other box. I have the same problem. Kitty eats raw, drinking very little water. Poo is dry and she at times cries out.
Hello, yes I do add extra filtered water to my kitties food. I use frozen raw and my kitty has very firm poo as well. Sometimes I do think she's a bit constipated. I used to add small amount of pure pumpkin and that helped tremendously and she loved it, now she's meh about it. So water is my option.

My cat has hard time pooping, when it comes out it's small & very hard. He has lost weight although he still have a great appetite & eat well, he drinks a lot too. I put pumpkin, a little coconut or olive oil & water in his food but still has a hard time pooping. I just spend 10000 dollars on my dog surgery & have little saving. What about very dried out poop? What does that mean other than needing more fluids?

i was hoping to feed my cat some veggies and fruits and i've tried feeding him squash and carrots and brocolli, sadly there is no success, he is born dec.9,2022. exo-persian long coat, he is now 3kilos, tried feeding him rare salmon, chicken liver, beef,chicken and pork grounds, but he barely eats it, so am stuck with royal canin kitten dry cat food, and wet food pouches yet i found something like what you said about black with streak of blood kind of poop, and its smells stinky rare meats. Now i am a bit worried, i will investigate his poop for now just to make sure. So after watching 2 of your "Cat Poop Specials" (we couldn't find #3) I wish to thank you for such a great presentation of such a subject. You really did well. But the subject that I need the information on you touched but did not go into causes and the treatment cannot be administered until I know the cause as you had stated. The problem if you so wonder is the dry, segmented poop. Our cat is not dehydrated or so I think because he urinates very regularly and we have a method of know how much water he takes in. I really wish to speak to you or message but I don't know how to reach you or if you even want to be bothered. I am not looking for free information so I can be considered a cash customer. We have a vet but there suggestion was pumpkin which we have been giving and it has been ingested but not bring results. Please respond ya or nay. Thank you

Great question. That can point to issues with the liver or gallbladder; definitely worth checking out.
Much like humans , and part of life . I follow a lot of rules that I would with my own human patients. We are much alike . But I also follow up with a specialist, the Vet . It can be easy to help your cat , much like just paying attention to a child and the daily life. Unfortunately cats rarely let us know when something isn’t right , so please spend time just watching and doing a little detective work on a daily bases , it could save you a lot of heartache and money in the long run. The key with anything is early diagnosis
