I 100% agree with you. Fuck my feelings. If my promo sucks, tell me. I need to know. I also agree people are becoming hyper sensitive toward critique, and I was taught that the arts have ALWAYS relied on critique. My older brother used to whoop me, set me right, and friends who would straight tell me when I am garbage. My art prof was hard and harsh on all of us - and he said "I am not here to coddle you, I am here to prepare you for the harsh, ugly world of the arts. It's a beautiful and ugly world. You're going to drown if you can't separate your feelings from your business."
Any criticism that has to do with my craft I take no offense to it, I just try to find the value of the words said, or ignore it if I feel like it's more of an attack of my character than a way to improve
I use to be hype sensitive about not selling beats. I use to get legit mad when rappers said pass on my tracks. But I came to the realization that I needed to find my audience and stop trying to pitch to everyone.
I can say at times I have fallen victim to my own sensitivity I realize that the energy I spend defending my insecurities I can put towards thinking positive about the criticism I receive and grow to become better majority of the time it’s not people who drag u down it’s your sensitivity and ego
Will Rich You and I both, which is why I think that it’s even more important that we continue share our stories and lead by example. It’s a work in progress to build that thick skin up.
Thank you for speaking on this. I've been talking about this and observing it in my close circle. It is the main reason why I left most of the social media I had this week, because I'm not going to waste my time being someone else than myself because people get in their feelings about the truth and some opinions I have. My mom raised me on life is rough so you have to have rough skin and know your worth to survive or you're going to be messed up.
Hypersensitivity can destroy you in life PERIODT! If you have any self esteem/self-confidence/extreme insecurity issues/childhood violations you need to address, do so NOW. The thing is there are people (especially the "sharks and wolves") can pick up sensitivities in people and those evil-enough will use them against you.
This is one of those videos that I wish everyone could see at least once... But unfortunately the people that need to see this the most would probably be too offended to even watch the thing all the way through...
One more thing. You also have to be able to get criticism from people that are considered “famous” and if it doesn’t match the goals you have for yourself be able to believe in yourself enough to respectfully decline to conform to others vision for you. It’s your life, time, and career. We are in an age where you really need NOBODY to make a living you just need to learn learn learn.
OMG DUDE !!! because of u, i am a student henceforth with a tougher skin. i can light up the sky with stuff in my past that's gone wrong but in the end ... nobody wants to hear it. nobody will help me get thru it. i got 1 TRUE homey who can put it to me straight like u had. PLEASE KEEP PUTTIN OUT THIS TRUTH CURTISS !!!
Everything you said brother is true. This game is cold blooded! I had my own band mates try to sabotage me a regular basis. I can write two or three novels on all the cut throat stuff I have seen or experience. Great video bro!
Curtiss! Realest message to pass along by far. Like you said this is not only an industry lesson but a life lesson. I appreciate you man, keep doing your thing.
wow thank you so much Curtiss! what you said about having thick skin and being around family members and close friends that can clown on you just inspired me to write some lyrics relating to my next single that talks about family and upbringings, thanks for the inspiration!
FACTS OF LIFE! It's a new breed programmed and conditioned in this timeframe; for the most part- The Filter world. What needs to be established is the Belief in Self!
great advice right there. i always thought that, even as an only child, you can develop thick skin from homies at school, at the block, cousins whatever. you ARE gonna be subjected to it very early on, kindergarden early on. ppl looking at you, judging you, rumors whatever. this shit aint easy i'll admit it. but at the end of the day, if ppl know you sensitive, they gonn push you even harder, every chance they get. and if you spend your whole life thinking they the faulty ones, you gonn end up plagued wit the victim mindset. alone, sad & petty or worse, sad, petty with your own children. not letting them disagree wit you, not letting them grow, having a debate, express themselves. talmbout "im the adult you shut the fuck up, dont question me" and yea, that doesnt last forever either so you'll be alone and miserable anyway. GROW THE FUCK UP. that's the only thing i could say. worst thing you could do in life is taking yourself too seriously. that's the archetype of the "cool kid at school" he's unbothered, you can't make him mad, he cool with everybody. he doesnt hesitate to practice self-deprecation coz he comfortable in his own skin. SIMPLE. anyway. great content. as always. (first comment on your page, ever) -- ps : "power vs force" great book.
I feel you on this one bro. This will touch thousands cause it's all the truth. ... And btw, I see that book in the background lol I see what you did there 👀 much blessings to you
Mr. King, greetings from Mexico City! Love your advice, I am actually finally making music and even starting a TH-cam channel, too. You inspired me to quit stalling and just do this. I think we’ve all been hyper sensitive, so, this is a very important video. Thanks!
This is facts though. I've taken many of L's based off my emotion growing up. L's in relationships, financial L's, spiritual L's etc... gotta roll with the punches. And as far a money goes the bible says "the LOVE of money is the root of all evil". A lot of niggas get their hands on some bread and bug out. O.G. Curtiss, thank you for touching on this!
The most accurate statements u made were those pertaining to the environment u had around you when u were coming up. It's good to be able to work alone, but we're made to work together. Working with others adds perspective. Learn how people work and what makes them do what they do. You can learn to adapt to the personalities you are unfortunately forced to deal with in this industry... Find some good friends, or hang around family... Ppl your most valuable resources are, a lot of the times, closer than you may think...
I heard a story from Jay Josh RocStar a fellow Music Producer on YT. He basically ruined a session with an up and coming female singer that had a strong opinion in a part of the job. He got angry with her and let loose, but instead of doing that now he would suggest "stepping it up, just say this is how I do it". You could lose contacts and connections just by being "more of who you are" after the opportunity for a better cash flow presents itself.
Yea u send Niggas beats n they be like yea ill check em out. Then see them n the studio with the caption." Found my producer" n the tag aint u.. 😂😂 happened to me crushed my soul😂
I don’t think there’s anything necessarily wrong with being sensitive until it affects your decision making and point of view of your fellow man. It’s human. However if it’s something that you really want to address head on, Read a book called “Unoffendable” One of the greatest points it made is that we literally don’t have the right to be offended because at some level we are guilty of dishing the core emotions that were dished towards us at some point.
Curtiss King TV Hey Curtiss! I remember you talked about that book on IG before. And I have trouble understanding the "we don't have a right to be offended" thing. I was hoping you could help me with it. So from my understanding we don't have the right to be offended because we (at some point) put out an opinion that offends someone else? And does that imply that we should never get offended by anything because of that? Thank you.
I just wanna add one thing. Criticism needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Adding on to what Curtis said...no matter what direction in life you go people are gonna be cutthroat. Granted in the rap/music game probably more so than other industries, but one thing you gotta do is think with your head, not your heart, and also have honesty. Instead of leaving this vid and being like "hell yeah I ain't gonna let nobody mess with me, and then pretending you don't feel anything when some criticize your work is wrong." of course criticism is gonna hurt, you put your heart soul, blood tears, everything into it. But what you gotta understand is that these people don't see that, they only go by what they see and hear, so NEVER ACT INSTANTLY, always, always think through things before. And if it's one of those split-second situations, sometimes its better to just not say anything and let it fly by until you figure out what to say. P.S> I don't know shit about the industry, most I got is 252 plays on soundcloud, but at the same time, I don't mind sharing my opinion and being |key word| HONEST about everything. I find the more honest you are with yourself the less criticism actually effects you FYI
They better go read some self-help books like the 48 laws of power , The Science of self Confidence, Etc....that’s what helped me understand why people did what they did and said to me! ...I grew out of that egotistical mindset!
iiimpeccable Your hair looks like a spider. Change the picture it scares me. I’m scared of spiders. Or take a picture where you are showing your whole face. One love! Hate spiders.
iiimpeccable Look it scares me. Maybe you could take the picture again with a do-rag. I almost feel out of my chair when I saw that picture. That or show your face so we know you’re a human with hair. Cause I thought it was a Spider. This really bothers me a lot.
I 100% agree with you. Fuck my feelings. If my promo sucks, tell me. I need to know. Perfectly said
Mad respect for the bravery to dish out the sad truthh
I use to be hype sensitive about not selling beats. I use to get legit mad when rappers said pass on my tracks. But I came to the realization that I needed to find my audience and stop trying to pitch to everyone.
Exactly, millions of people, millions of opinions, some rapper will like the beat, some will not, just keep doing what you do 👌
All you have to realize is this. YOUR TALENT MAY BE EXCEPTIONAL, BUT YOU ARE NOT AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE.
Maaan this is so true. You HAVE to develop thick skin to consistently work in this industry.
