Very first thing you should do is pick a scale and stick with it. Easiest is C major which is all the white keys and no black keys. Then learn what chords are in that scale (start with power chords and triads). once you know what notes you could use and what notes you can't, any melody you come up with will sound good. Then you pick a song and listen to it carefully and try to recreate the drums. When you listen you hear all the creative things the drums do to sound good. Best way to learn is to recreate your favorite songs.
I love that tip on: consume advice and information at your level. Sometimes it may be too advanced to understand and because of that, I often get frustrated and give up.
First of all, I️ am no beginner I’m in the phase of starting to sell my beats online prior to selling to everyone that came to my studio. Second of all, the reason I️m watching this video is because you’re a 10000% correct and I️ tell you this because I️ also teach beginners when they come to my studio and I️ tell them the same thing you just said in this video they get annoyed because they want to learn everything in one day and it’s true before I️ could be in my level I️ had to learn step by step I️ first had to learn all the softwares before I️ could make music and then I️ had to learn music theory and then I️ just sit back for a couple of months and just listen to a lot of different styles and elements other producers used in their beats and it was harder for me because I️ taught myself music theory paying people so I️ could watch videos and everything but it was all worth it now I️ have a quality that is very accurate I️ know how to use pro tools since I’m also a mixing and audio engineer, Cubase, logic, at some point reason and fl studio that is the problem with the new producers they want to go from 0 steps to a 100 at once and you can’t do that with music. Music is an art it took me about 8 to 10 Years to know everything ik and ik I️ still have lots to learn so for the beginners that sees my comment learn from this and listen to this man right here he is speaking gold he should be charging for this but he wants to help you so listen closely
This was actually a very good video. Great tips! Ive produced for 32 years, and recently started to learn a new instrument. The big difference between being 16 and 46 is that most of the stress is gone. I have no need to rush it. I mean I know its gonna take 15-20 years to learn anyways. I wish more young beginners could be more cool about it, to not just consume information, but to process it too. Music is not like sport, were you have to peak before 30. Music is a lifelong progression, you might peak at 25, but most likely you will peak just before you die.
4:55 - 5:50 I wish I would've heard this 2 years ago! Esp this 5:22; so true about TH-cam tuts. The majority are the exact same "general" info. And most tut makers explain the "steps THEY TAKE" to create such & such. They don't "teach" the "craft." They just recite each other's scripts. Less than 10% of all [FL Studio] "how to make..." videos will actually contribute to the "growth" of a newbie's aptitude in creating better music. If the tut isn't methodically presented over the craft of MUSIC making, with various demonstrations of techniques or methods included, it is essentially a near verbatim of a previous explanation from someone else who is reciting someone else who is reciting someone else who is reciting.... New info is handcapping to originality, this is why nearly all the people making tuts share the exact same sound templates.
As someone who took a long break from music and now wants to get back into it at age 31 i feel a sense of urgency and strong desire to become what I always wanted to be. I gotta accept that the best years are gone and it is somewhat challenging now that I have more responsibilities at my age. I want to learn as much as possible but I know all the knowledge a pro producer has won’t come overnight. Learning music theory, daw’s, mixing sound (and whatever else a producer knows) ain’t gonna come over night. Right now I’m gonna focus on my strengths and surround myself with others who can do what I can’t due to lack of knowledge and skill. I know eventually I’ll catch on and my skills will come up to par. Good video 👍🏾
Thanks for the knowledge. That was a good question that was submitted. I only been making beats of a year, and I feel as if I only have begun to scratch the surface of how to make beats. It is a lot of knowledge to consume.
Thank you so much for this!! This couldn't have come at a better time. I tend to overwhelm myself and get discouraged but this was definitely a reminder to adjust my approach. I need to be patient with myself ferreals..and love this learning process. Stay blessed!
The point made about hyper consume state is aptly said. You have preached some golden words without being technical at all. Every aspiring producer should watch this video first before jumping into the hyper consume mode.
I had to step back and tell myself to chill out on the tutorial videos. I was trying to learn mixing/beat patterns/music theory/chord progressions/Fl studio shortcut keys/beat structuring and piano playing . Problem is I was trying to learn it all mentally , without applying ANY of it to actual real practice. Or if I did apply it , I’d use a copy/paste mentality so it didn’t even register as knowledge. Now I just play around and spend a few hours making a loop and if I like it I’ll structure it . If it don’t sound like it got arranged correct , THEN I look up tutorial videos so I know oooh okay my verse section ended 2 bars to early . The mixing/piano playing/ music theory is all on the back burner til I can atleast get a simple beat start to finish going. I don’t got a midi so I’m waiting to get that to really focus on scales and piano playing . Also reminding myself this is gonna be a longterm relationship required to get to where I wanna be. It doesn’t matter about how cold you THINK you CAN be at making beats . It matters about if you really putting in those hours . Also once you perfect something , that’s when you wanna adventure into uncharted territory so you don’t get stuck in repetition . If you can’t even get a beat made , don’t worry about beat drop suspension elements , and automations . Bless up king I know this video hella old but it’s still a gem , and people might read this comment .
Everything that you said just makes a lot of sense. Very realistic approach into becoming the best at what you want to become. This is how successful people develop mastery in their field. Explore. Learn. Evolve.
Good advice, it can defiantly overwhelming, it’s like I wanna write good songs but then I get overwhelmed with technology in trying to get it to sound like I want then getting it to sound good enough to put out there, there’s so many things and it doesn’t seem anyone gets it, they think you just play a song a bang that’s it.
That part where you go on a list of questions; I feel like a video literally just listing tons of questions like that could do wonders. With the point being the viewer should actually look everything up. (Or provide a link with playlist of your own videos explaining the topics of course haha) As someone who's been diving into the specifics as a beginner, I feel like that would definitely help to have it all in one place.
I was going to college for music education. I decided it wasent what i wanted i left college and now im getting ready to go to trade school for music production. This is a major help. I have a solid knowledge in theory and numerous instruments i just have to learn how to use the equipment and how it all the synergy works together. I appricate this video thanks man!
A lot of producers, big name and lesser known, think they don't need to know music theory. While you may not need to know advanced music theory depending on your genre, I think you need to know the basics such as key signatures, rhythm, song structure, and how to make chords. Those are the essentials to making music that you can't ignore. I don't remember if it was Busy Works Beats or someone from Internet Money, but one of them made a video on how they build chords and said you don't need music theory. However, even though their method wasn't the traditional method, that's still music theory; their technique is just a little different. I've taken three semesters of theory so far in college. While I am far from an expert at it, I think that all musicians, artists, and producers should at least understand the basics. Learning more of it will only help you make better music and will break you out of the habit of only making four bar loops.
Thank you for making this video. I was doing some SWOT analysis to help re-develop my channel. Found this video under the a certain key word. So glad you said the most important thing: consume and learn on your current level. I got analysis paralysis at one point like you said, trying to read, listen, and watch everyone who says their a producer. They all said various and similar things, which became overwhelming. Right now just gonna start from level one: review music, learn how to use Reaper and really start using it!

Very interesting video as usual M.King. As a musician who walked the traditional way by learning music and instruments, I totally agree with what you say in that video. In 2019, I wouldn't say going to music school is useful because of the tools we have now, technical tools ( DAWs, MPCs, etc... ) as well as learning tools ( TH-cam vids, etc... ). But from what I hear, listening to beats here and there, it's very useful to learn a bit of music, rythm, harmony etc... to get the most out of the beats... I'd be definitely interested in a video where you explain what a skilled musician need to learn to "fit" as a modern music producer, if that makes sense... How to learn the codes and inner rules of the different genres and subgenres, and how one can educate himself to modern composition and production. Again, thanks for all the good content...
