    Best review on the M9 so far. Exactly what I needed - a comparison between M5 and M9.

    Got the M5. Apartment building, with lots of concrete/rebar, 1,670 sqft over two floors, the two-pack M5 works like a dream.

    How is the coverage through walls? This is more important to me than having super speed

  • @MrNEWDY
    @MrNEWDY 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm gonna guess that the m9 didn't get the same speed was because from what I understood a vast majority of mesh systems use automatic band steering. The original unit had time to figure out the best channels to use and with beam forming establish the strongest connection it could over time ( I believe there velop does this too)
    I could totally be wrong but that would be my best guess.

      I disabled beamforming and in most cases it was better speeds lol

    I think the reason for the speed difference is that the M5 is using AC1300 whilst the M9 is AC2200. Question, can I mix and match the M5 with the M9 though I think the 2 packs of M5 is more than enough for my home, and where i need the high speed is with a wired connection directly to the desktop.

    • @SerahBeelzebub
      @SerahBeelzebub 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      According to the app you can mix and match but you have to use the M9 as the one attached to your modem. You can use one of the satellite nodes as pseudo wired connection just hook up an ethernet cable to it

    All of the features that you see in the app for the M9+ were made available to the M5. The only real difference is dedicated wireless backhaul on the M9+ plus AC2200

    You forgot to mention that IP reservation can only be done for 8 devices. I have deco M9+ and the network kept dropping. I thought it will be problem with modem, and so I changed my modem 2 times already with no luck. Connected to provider, modem company and deco support. Provider and modem said everything looks good and issue with with Deco. After contacting Deco they were not able to help with anything. Return period is over, co cannot return it.

    I am having that issue that you discuss with speeds going way down upstairs in farthest room right now. I also have learned that trying to Zoom with a Chromebook sucks. My kids lose their connections often. I then switched them to my laptop with MS Windows and their Zoom meetings are flawless. No glitching or loss of connection. I ran a speed test with Wi-Fi and can get over 200 mbps but I currently have 400 mbps with Spectrum. Looking to see if the mesh system will improve this for me.

    I just installed M9 plus and added ring security system in my house in kerala, India. I replaced my existing router config tp-link+range extender. I must say Indian homes are not router friendly as the houses are built with think concrete walls that its hard for signal to penetrate. After installing 3 M9 modules, i still have atleast 4 dead spots all around the network center. I also added a google home. Honestly i find the new network has worsened in performance, esp connectivity. The firmare updates cause it to reset every few hours. In the mesh network, if we are moving from say upstairs to kitchen transition is horrible as we litrelly get cut off for atleast 5 to 10 minutes before we connect to the wifi network again.

      run Ethernet cables trough ceiling/walls.

    • @stex477
      @stex477 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cmdaddy88 the key point is, the mesh network communication relies on the 1st and 2nd 5G bands upload and download. So if the 2nd M9 is far from the initial M9, they will only communicate over 2.4G. What's worse is, there is only one 2.4G band and has to be used for both up and down that make the bandwidth half. If you add 3rd M9, same scenario will only make it 1/4. You have to keep closer to the initial M9. Also its better to let the 3rd talk to the initial M9 instead of the 2nd one. Good luck.

    Just got the DECO M9 3-pack and I get great connectivity from all of them. The system is set as 'Router' with 'Fast Roaming' 'Enabled'. What I am not able to get is my phone to jump to the next best point (3 points/modules installed). I have to close the Wi-Fi down in the phone settings and turn it back on, wait for it to link to the network and boom, I'm connected to the nearest point. Is there a setting or set up method so the device in question switches to the nearest, strongest point AUTOMATICALLY? Anyone else have this issue?

    • @THEMRMURDER270

      I don't have the exact same model. Buuuut from experience, the tp link routing services like dhcp etc etc are not that good. I used to have the same issues like you until I changed the operation mode to access point and use my own router/firewall.

  • @topouzidd
    @topouzidd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    All broadband modem/routers provided by ISPs already have integrated router, dhcp server, qos, ip&mac binding, reservation, port forwarding, firewall etc, so all we end up using is the AP function of the Deco. I don't understand why they have all those advanced functions that we'll never be able to use since we can't get a simple modem from an ISP. In fact the only modems I've ever seen that don't have a router is a dialup 56k modem, but I doubt that the Deco is made for a dialup modem connection.

    • @rockdonot
      @rockdonot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most modem/routers can be put into a modem only mode, that way you can hand over routing duties to another router.
      It is the recommended way to setup a mesh network because as you say as an AP you lose a lot of features.

    I have a couple of questions for that particular M9 set - maybe you know :-)
    - is there an optimum /better position for the unit i.e. Horizontal / Vertical/Upside down? (I would like to place on the ground floor one unit vertically on the wall ca 8 inches from the floor, and on the 1st floor a second one upside down on the ceiling?
    - I assume in your test the 1st main unit was connected to internet with cable and the second unit was connected to the first unit via wifi 'bridge'. in such case the second unit will be only as quick as it will be able to get the wifi signal from the 1st unit. My question - can you connect each unit directly to internet via cable /so each gets a full speed internet feed/ and than make them work in a mash network?
    - what is the maximum realistic coverage without much signal loss area in a regular house made out of typical concrete&bricks not wood)?

    • @byrnedes

      Not a dumb question. I’m wondering about the exact same thing. I guess it’s needs the internet service provider router not as a wireless router, but as a modem to connect the internet signal by Ethernet cable into the M5/M9 device.

  • @nrobertsaus

    Hi, how sensitive are the units to their orientation? Can you install the base horizontally, and the satellite units vertically?

  • @chrs_lee

    Great review on both this and the M5 unit, I've been looking for some sort of mesh or extender to improve signal to the far corners of my house for streaming TV purposes. Out of curiosity, though, why not set up the main access point in the middle of the house (main floor) and the two slave devices on the fringes? So long as the core unit has a wired connection it shouldn't matter the actual location, and would probably provide better reception to the other units?
    The lack of a web interface does rather suck, though...it's probably an even more basic feature than port forwarding and dedicated IPs.I guess with this being a week old now, that TP didn't get anything done on the interface front for the M5 in the last year.

    As my house has 3 storeys, and I have 6 ethernet plugs around the place. I liked to purchase the MESH system, but getting 6x M9Plus is over my budget, so I'm thinking to mix 3x M9Plus + 3x M5. Here's my questions: (1) Would you recommend to hook up the M9Plus and M5 under the same roof? Will the M5 affect the performance of M9Plus if I link them together? (2) Do I need a MU-MIMO main router to be able to enjoy the MU-MIMO feature on M9Plus? or it doesn't matter, I can still use the ordinary router provided by the telco company?

Unfortunately there's not much you can do to reduce latency without hard wiring. You can get a professional electrician to pull the ethernet cables to different parts of your home through wall (they usually know the best and efficient way to help you regarding this issue).

      That seems to be the pattern with TP-Link products. I set up Nord on my Asus RT-AC66U Open VPN, but the process couldn't handle it (according to Nord) and my seepd dropped to 6Mbs/sec. So now I'm on the hunt for a router that can handle running Nord without the price tag of the routers Nord sells pre-loaded. Any suggestions?

      You can use ddwrt on a linksys router and still get decent speeds. or build a pfsense box ;p

    MHz always pronounced Hertz, never Hurt. It was named after a German physicist named Hertz, it replaced the older term Megacycles per second. There's no singular form!
