    I bought 2 after seeing a setup on the TP-Link site that showed a root modem (non-M5) and the M5s connected to that. When I installed the app, it only shows the guide to set up the first one as the main router and I can't get to the Advanced settings at all to switch the two M5s to range extenders. I contacted support and they sent me a basic setup video that showed using the M5 as the main router even after I explained I had an Archer for that specific purpose. Is it possible to keep the Archer as the root router and extend with the two M5s? If not, I have to send them back. I think the Help section in the app has the same Advanced diagram with the non M5 root router being used.

    • @TPLINKTECH
      @TPLINKTECH  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Craig, the M5s cannot extend the range of a standard router, even if it is one of ours. However it is still possible. What you can do is put the Deco in AP mode. Connect one to your Archer and then have the 2nd and 3rd units be remote. If you choose this option i strongly suggest disabling the Archer's wifi to avoid interference. Also keep in mind AP mode kills all of the router and homecare features of the Deco. Best Regards

      Typically a modem can only allow 1 device to be connected at any given time. If you modem allows more than one connection it is also a router, it is also known as a Gateway. If this is the case then yes you can use the Ethernet backhaul and physically connect all Decos to the Gateway. You can also interconnect the Decos to each other via ethernet.

    I have a panoramic gateway in my home & then I have a studio/office I built in back of the home. I bought these to extend my wifi out to the office. Is this not what it's good for? I bought the Deco 2 pack. I wasn't aware that one device had to stay hardwired. I thought I could power one up in the room to the rear of the main house & then put another Deco in that back office room.

    • @TPLINKTECH
      @TPLINKTECH  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Deco regardless of mode, Router/AP, will require a unit to stay connected to the source so that an internet signal can be provided through the Deco system. They are not deigned to wirelessly link to an existing Wireless signal unless that signal is generated by a Deco. They can however replace the Panoramic WiiFi system and connect directly to the source, the modem or ONT. From there you keep one unit connected and the other can be wireless. You can even add more Decos, up to 10 to the network for further expansion.

      Yes, Decos themselves are routers so like routers they must be connected to an internet source at all times. In Mesh only one of the units has to be connected to the internet source. Hi! TP-Link is not a service provider so you will need to have your own service prior to installation. This service will need to be wired, like for a traditional router. You will connect an Ethernet cable from a ISP's modem, modem/router, or an ONT to an Ethernet port on one of the units. This unit becomes your Base unit and the source of service for all remote units. You can have up to 10 total Deco units in one network, with one of the 10 serving as the base unit.

    In this video you connect the Deco to a wi-fi Router, is there a requirement to disable the Wi-Fi on the router? I would have thought that if both Wi-Fi networks are running and available to devices then there could be issues with devices swapping between networks and connection drop-outs due to handshaking (disconnecting/reconnecting) between networks.

    • @TPLINKTECH
      @TPLINKTECH  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When this video was shot they didn't have a modem available to show a "standard" setup process. Yes if you connect the Deco to a router you can see wireless issues, especially if the client is configured to connect to both networks. This is why if you are connecting to a router we recommend putting the Deco in AP mode and disabling the wireless on the main router.

    • @TPLINKTECH
      @TPLINKTECH  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the router was just used as an example of the "internet source". Deco can be used as a replacement to an existing router, and in fact that is how we recommend using Deco. One unit connected to your internet source (modem, gateway, router) and then the rest remote once they are configured. Deco is configured one unit at a time. Once the first unit is configured the remain units simply connect to the first and receive the config file. As for gaming. They should be sufficient for gaming but I do personally recommend connecting your PC or game console to one of the units ethernet ports to boost through put and reduce lag. However, this is my recommendation with any router.

      If that ethernet is the source of your internet, yes. During setup you can choose PPPoE as your WAN type and input the credentials for authentication. • @TPLINKTECH

      Yes and No. If you connect two router together you create a double NAT environment. Double NAT requires devices connected to the 2nd router to be translated twice. It also affects features like firewalls, and port forwarding. So if the primary router can not be swapped out it is recommend to put the router in AP mode. In AP mode all advanced features would be disabled as these features are linked to the router function.

    I've just received a TP link Deco 50 to install in my friend's house.. At the moment she has all sorts of things (cameras, TV's, Alexa and so on) on her wifi network which is "called" her network router and password plus one extender which has the name of the above "-ext". Does installation of the mesh system change the Network settings so I have to change everyone of her devices to run of the new mesh OR can the mesh system be created as an extension of the existing router network so all the devices just connect to the nearest Deco ? I'm not sure that I can face having to change the setting on all her devices!!! Nightmare if I have to......Thanks in advance for any advice on this - I've tried to plough through loads of YT vids but in every case it seems to be setting up a completely new TPLINK network. Or can I leave alone the devices which are fine at the moment and just use the mesh for the ones farthest from the router with the connection problems? Thanks

    • @TPLINKTECH
      @TPLINKTECH  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the best thing to do in this case is when setting up the Deco system is to set the network name and password to what the current network is using. For example if the current network name is MyNetwork with a password AwesomeWiFi, then you would set the Deco to that when setting it up. Once the old network devices are removed and replaced with the Deco the client devices should reconnect without problem. The only exception would be anything connected to the -ext network. Those devices would have to be connected to the Main network manually.

      Installed the 3 nodes but connection is nowhere near as strong as indicated. The first node is the cable length from the router, the second we tried in the utility in the same socket where the previous (removed) extender was placed. The node kept dropping connection so we moved it to the lounge, immediately below the study where router is placed. This connected fine but the node would not connect to smart plug at the other end of the lounge. The third node was placed in front bedroom to pick up ring door bell, outside light and Twinkly lights on balcony - it wouldn't connect with the study node by the window so moved it closer to the middle of the house (same bedroom) - this connected to the node in study but not to Ring door bell. This is a not at all large (800 odd square feet) 60's built 3 bedroom detached house (2 bedrooms at the back, one bed +bathroom at the front so I don't understand why the connection is so bad. I have ordered a 4th node for the kitchen now in an attempt to connect to the items at the front of the house. If this does not work, I shall be returning the whole lot as it is clearly not fit for purpose. You can place the Deco system in AP mode. With this you will only have 1 set of IPs and the Gateway will handle all routing. However all routing and homecare features of the Deco will be disabled in this mode. Ideally if the ATT gateway can be put into a modem only bridge mode that would be ideal. You still have only one LAN subnet but the Deco would be your router and all features would be enabled.

      Yes either will work. We would recommend removing the existing router and using the Deco as your main router though. This way you get full advantage of all the features the deco has to offer. If this is not desired or possible you can place the deco in AP mode and connect it to an existing router. If you do none of the Routing features, such as AV, QOS and Parental Controls will work.
