Xavier knew how to write effective, exhilarating, witty finales! And evocative andantes. And all his other charming and beautiful movements. I've only heard this and his "Partita" so far...but I'm only getting started! I'm sure to discover much more of value to enjoy.
This work is so different from other Montsalvage pieces I've heard ... Stravinsky's gestures are in there, but with a sensibility at once much more lush and more playful -- kind of like a Catalan Poulenc. This piece is totally delightful.
This is just marvelous! Poised with incredible possibilities and dynamics...bravo!!!
Maravillosa música la de este compositor catalán.
Very enjoyable . Thank you for posting.

I want this on one of those hours-long loop videos. I am in love, why have I never heard this before?!
Variaciones sobre una españoleta de Giles Farnaby played a night ago on Catalunya Musica and brought me to Xavier Montsalvatge
Nice comment, wouldn't you say Chad Bruns? A true content creator

At first I thought it was Larrocha herself playing, but Angela Cheng nailed it...a performance that matches Alicia's (a rarity..)
I thought this was Alicia too. Great performance.

because they are Catalan????
Nope! It isn't Nationality...you would otherwise have to disqualify Albeniz and Granados.
Peter Lunow -- Exactly! Strange to say...but if they were Friesians or even Jews, the effect would be attenuated.
