These boss sprites are ridiculously good, never seen anything like it.
This game was entirely handdrawn. It had some of the best sprites ever
There's at least 50 games with sprites as compelling as the ones in this game.
Breath of fire 3-4 sprites stomp on these tbh
I first played this in 2005 I think and I was blown away by the sprites. Amazing. And that boss music, too
I don't remember that Beholder Sprite, now I'm gonna have to replay that game...

Yeah... Legend of Mana, Vagrant Story, Threads of Fate, Front Mission 3, Parasite Eve 1-2, Brave Fencer Musashi, Chrono Cross, SaGa Frontier 1-2, Xenogears. It was the golden era of Square.

To be fair, they still have good games besides FF even now. Bravely Default being a great example.
But the problem is, back then FF games were the only ones that sold, so it was the only series to survive those times.
And it was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within's fault.

FF: The Spirit's Within was the reason people didn't but Legend of Mana, Vagrant Story, Brave Fencer Musashi, Xenogears, Parasite Eve and a whole lot of others?
Now that's a pretty far fetched idea.
FF:TSW was a flop, and it did make Square lose a lot of money. But you can't exactly overlook that poor sales do, in fact, mean even bigger losses for the company.
Squaresoft went on bankruptcy because of that movie. Since it was a commercial failure, Square lost 120 million dolars. So they had no other option but join with Enix.
The Art in this game is gorgeous, even after all these years it's still a joy to watch !
The OST.. touches your very soul. It just transports me back to somewhere, undescribable. Especially 12:44

GamingCentralPlayer not MidBoss666 but I'd give it a solid 8.5/10, 9/10 if you're into action RPGs and 10/10 if you're a fan of previous Mana games. The game has so many options and variations that you'll likely never see everything it has for you. The graphics are top notch, the music is excellent and gameplay is very good. Give it a shot sometime, you likely won't regret it. An underrated (I hate that word) classic for the PS1.
It is a game that you must try many times, the first time you play will be MONSTRUOUSLY EASY because the difficult level escalates as much as you replay it. But it is one amazing game with a lot of customization available and with very hard battles in the post new games with very deep story lines. Just saying, there are three main quest lines that you must follow before the ending and they are AMAZING.

Actually, you only need to finish one of the 3 najor quests to make the finak boss available. I's mostly to make restarting the gane easier if you wamt to rearrange your world.

This game had it all, it proved that PlayStation didn't need 3D graphics to impress players.
The sound effects in combat are excellent, too. The impact sounds are weighty and make you feel powerful
Everything about this game just oozes charm. There's nothing quite like it all in terms of visuals, story, narrative, and gameplay
I remember playing this game for hours growing up. It has some of the best sprite based graphics ever along with a killer soundtrack. The memories! This and Symphony of the Night have aged gracefully due to their graphics.

Beside I thought he were going to use the third attack trick, where If you don't press the attack button on the third hit, when the animation ends the char can start the combo chain again.

Thanks. Although I've missed two bosses: Kima and Shadow Zero One. Couldn't get their side quests because you have to place artifacts in special order on the world map. :( I didn't know that. Yeah, and I've skipped the similar bosses: e.g. Jewel Beast II-IV, Zeno, etc.

You can start new game plus by talking to the books in the table, at the player house, on the room to the right.
But the book of new game plus only appears If you've beaten the game.
Hope they put a port of this on Switch soon. I wouldn't be surprised considering the Mana and Saga ports and Remakes

Music and art is what this game is all about, the combat was annoying as hell thanks to invincibility frames all over, but damn if it wasn't an amazing experience.

1:50:09 of my time totally damn worth it, never have played this amazing game cuz it wasnt in the stores in my country, i downloaded the OST since 2005 unknowing the game itself, but hear of it and yea this is a jewel of games before the new millenium that marked so many lifes, history, music and gameplay, incredible indeed

They still have the game and its original box and everything still in great conditions this game brings me back memories sadly the sword of mana and the scroll of Mana were lost but I like the music of this game just makes me feel like a child once again simple and better days the only thing that was hard for me was to make a better sword in the Forge. Well technically the Alchemy lab

This game was so good. The boss sprites were amazing and that music...awesome. And I preferred the 2-hand sword, but that's just me
I loved playing this. I got very far in the game and then got stuck. I replayed every stage multiple times and could never figure out what I needed to do to progress the story.

Beatiful game, this is supposed to be the endgame to the entire seiken denketsu saga but then again it's no longer canon. At least it's a relief to play a mana game where the mana tree doesn't gets blown up

Yes, maybe in the future. Although some magic spells of the bosses are unavoidable, as far as I remember.
The games must have some spells to avoid damage or block certain elemental attacks, otherwise it wouldn't be fair.
Serg is mostly correct. I believe in SD3 you are immune to damage while performing a tech, making the LV 1 tech the only way to avoid the myriad of targeted and fullscreen techs & spells used by bosses (all higher player techs freeze the screen and will only delay said attack.)
Even if that's true this isn't viable though because
1. You have to predict (guess) when the boss will perform the attack and use the tech right before it starts
2. Bosses can & will spam fullscreen techs way more often than you can get Lv 1 techs off
3. You pretty much need to take either Angela or Carlie, who are both mages and whose spells will constantly freeze the battle and waste your time; only one or two "battlemage" style classes for each of them make their techs worth using
4. You can't control which character is targeted by an enemy's attack
It's much more viable to do a No Character Death run with a level limit.

Fuck me... This game was the legend... 😭😭 Colorful sprite, customizable weapon, lots of features, good poetic lines (I love poem 😂), and friggin great soundtrack... I grew up with this game... 😭😭

I didnt know this was an *action* rpg! I regret not playing it now. It looka dope as fuck.
It looks and sounds beautiful. It has a lot of depth to it when you dig deep enough. By far, it is my favourite game on the PSX.
And yet, this broken battle system made it arguably the worst entry of any Mana game at the time. It's not just too easy, it's also limited and makes all options outside basic attacks worthless. Remember there's magic in the game? A positive is that you can create your own, with a huge downside being even with the best materials it's effectively a waste of time.
That's one example. A smaller critique would be the layout of levels that at times don't make any sense. At least you don't have to wonder about too many exits on screen but for how beautiful everything looks, navigation isn't nearly as exciting. Put that with the broken battle system and the worst problem might be that encounters are all forced+unavoidable.
Just because I love so much of this game doesn't mean I will turn a blind eye to its flaws. You gotta admit when something would depend on someone's taste, and when it's undeniably a mistake. Secret of Mana's remake wasn't too well received (I dunno, looked harmless to me if a bit overpriced) so I doubt Mana series could all come back to relevance. Should Legend of Mana ever get a rerelease with fixes, it'll have to be with a comprehensive facelift more extreme than Secret of Mana to adapt to today's standards. For example, I better be able to run away from battles and because they're risky, not a bore.

Now if only you did play the boss battles of the remake from Vita (the remake of the Final Fantasy Adventure). THAT would be awesome.
I am assuming this wasn't a all boss fight but still good job for a no hit challenge! There still the Lev 1 run challenege (no exp to the main character) take my word lol some of those bosses without that stats are harder. :D

Actually, it takes several playthroughs. Some bosses need very specific conditions for their quest to appear.

Well, this was an Akitoshi Kawazu game. He seems to delight in making games that never explain how anything works. The SaGa games, this, The Last Remnant.

the mana series got weird after this, i think tried to experiment to much, i perfer orginal trilogy and gba remake of first game and ps1 legend of mana over what came after! For whatever reason square enix lost touch about htis series what hell it was all about.

The only difference I remember is one line in the whole game where somenone will comment on the 'crazy' chopsticks in the female character hair but something else for the male one. The protagonist is silent except for one line either way.

I always chose to side with Daena myself.
Mainly because I feel Escad has completely lost his mind: he's so fixated on saving Matilda he's willing to kill anyone who isn't with him or may possibly be a threat to Matilda... Doesn't even ask questions about it.

This game looks depressing AF, TBH. Any non-human character is one you eventually have to fight (and usually kill) regardless of alignment.
