    Omg yes! Brigandine! That is one of my favorite games even today. I went into this video expecting not to see that on the list and having to leave an angry comment. Im so impressed that it made the list. If anyone hasnt played it, I highly recommend it! If you can, the grand edition is slightly better.

    • @SeanCarterCFH
      @SeanCarterCFH 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How so?! The regular edition was beyond impressive to the point a 13 year old me wrote Atlas essentially like YASSSSSSSSSS PLEASE DO THIS MORE!!! It was like having 7 games in one with all the options to play as well as the sheer amount of creatures to upgrade. Quests so nobody was stagnant and waiting... perfection in strategy form 💯

      @supersaiyaneevee1573 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SeanCarterCFH grand edition includes multi-player, more characters/monster, more cut scenes (its a 2 disc game), and they made Esgares (I think that's how it's spelled, the purple country) fully playable rather then having to use a code

    The thing SaGa Frontier has than the second are; Robots, Mystics, Morphing Monsters, a literal NEET, Cosplaying Chick, an OP Mage, and a Superhero.
    You can pick anyone in any order, whoever you pick changes the playing field
    The skills are so many ranging from physical, ranged, magic. Which you can combo for 5 times.
    For such an old game there are tons to explore, skills to experiment, and heck, whoever names a skill “Million Dollers”?

    Guardian's Crusade (if I don't count Megaman Legends--this is debatable) was the game that got me into RPGs (and one of my favorite games of all time). I bought the game from a Babbages at a local mall (I am pretty sure I bought it with birthday money) for $39.99. When I was in the car and I was looking at the back of the game, I had a realization that made me wonder if I'd like the game or not--it had turn-based combat. Fortunately, I ended up enjoying the combat system significantly more than I thought I would. I played this game for MANY hours (I am sure that I have done at least a dozen playthroughs) and even played it some in my adulthood.
    After Guardian's Crusade, I started buying rpgs like crazy. One of them was Granstream saga (which I purchased from a local pawn shop). I never beat the game (I think I got stuck somewhere) but I did really enjoy the part that I played through.
    I rented Saga Frontier 2 from Blockbuster video. I enjoyed the game, but I never could find a purchasable copy.
    I played Dragon Valor as well. I enjoyed the graphics and combat system, but for some reason I never really stuck with it. It may have been something to do with the story.

    As a closing thought after watching this like 10 times lol. I hope modern fans realize the world doesn't just revolve around "Final Fantasy" there are so many great classic epics out there that deserve that recognition and playablity. I realize mainstream folks are always going to gravitate more towards stuff that is remade in some fashion or ported to modern hardware, but serously, as you have played FF VII remake and grown to enjoy the original Final Fantasy games as im seeing a massive influx now on twitch. Take some time and really check out some quality works of art that arn't just FF. There is alot of amazing adventures and fantasy worlds to explore on this great 32-bit system.

    The greatest RPG's of all time were made for the PS1. The "Golden Age of RPG's" me and my brother call it. So many fantastic stories that were not only engaging, but innovative. The variety was quite amazing as well. From the popular ones like Final Fantasy VII and Dragon Quest VII to the lesser known but equally as good (if not better) gems like Suikoden and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (Grandia, Legend of Legaia, Alundra, Brave Fencer Musashi, Jade Cocoon, Tales Series, Threads of Fate, Dragon Valor. I could go on and on). That system's RPG's were the pinnacle of narrative, character development, game play mechanics and style. Back before graphics were so good that they all looked the same; these games relied on differentiating visual styles! From the smooth realistic graphics of a Parasite Eve to the masterfully pixelated anime inspired "gundam" suits of Vanguard Bandits. It truly was a treasure trove of entertaining and enthralling games. Playable movies is a better label for them. If you enjoy RPG's but haven't played the NUMEROUS great titles from that era than you are missing out. Great videos, Erick!

Totally changes who you play next in your family line through multiple generations. What weapons you get. What dragons you fight. What dungeons you do. Everything. Grandia is a good game but I don't think it's hidden, at least not amongst us RPGamers. I'm not a fan at all of Front Mission and Digimon. Koudelka is cool but not as good as some others, at least in my opinion. As for Hoshigami, well, I hate that game, hahaha.

    Personally I wouldn't consider a few of these 'hidden' as they sold well and were fairly well known (Vandal Hearts, Saga Frontier 2, Thousand Arms, and Jade Cocoon). Kartia is a great choice though.

    • @ErickLandonRPG
      @ErickLandonRPG  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      "they sold well" when? When they came out? This video wasn't made then, you know? Most of these games are fairly unknown and underrated. Ah, but if you're an RPG fanatic like me, then of course they're not hidden at all. To people like us, nothing is hidden.

    • @wileyschmitt
      @wileyschmitt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes when they came out, they had a long enough run of being available brand new, and sold fairly well. Perahps defining your idea of 'hidden gem' before hand and RPG snobs like me will more likely agree with your sentiments. Azure Dreams is a perfect hidden gem by my definition, and some of your picks as well, but with the amount of RPGs on a system like the PS1 there can be a lot of speculation on what a hidden gem is. I worked at a video game store for the last half of the PS1's lifespan so I might have a much different perspective on if particular games were well known at the time and how well they sold, and some games made rare appearances being sold back to us, and sometimes we'd only get a few copies of certain titles when they were released, even despite lying about pre order totals in order to get more. Saga Frontier 2 though came out during a summer when Square was at its height of dominance and anything they made would fly off the shelves. Jade Cocoon was a title that was always available brand new and fairly popular among non RPG players (good hook to get them into RPGs). Thousand Arms and Vandal Hearts were easy to find new or used and sold well, Vandal Hearts 2 was the one that was harder to find but wasn't quite as good as the first game. Check out Koudelka and Vanguard Bandits, they weren't well known but decent games for sure.
