    Using a lot of really helpful information posted by others online, I fixed the dreaded failed spot welds that hold the clutch on our 2008 WRX.
    I couldn't have done it without these helpful threads:

    I don't have a WRX with a squeky clutch, but the somber music and the editing made this very interesting.

    Have a neighbor who is suffering from this, going to fix it here tomorrow. I really didn't want to pull the dash, so this looks like a way better option. Thanks!

    If you suspect the spot welds have let go on your car (like many others), have a look at the humble rumble spot weld replacement kit.

    Has anyone with a creaky clutch AND difficulty shifting tried this method? I was told this should fix both problems. Thx all for feedback!

    perhaps some silicone adhesive on both sides of the firewall and split lock washers under the nut for added peace of mind?

    Great Video! Going to do this for my 09 WRX. I know for a fact my weld spots are broken. It sounds like grandma creaking in her old rocking chair every time I step on the clutch. This happened around 80k for me.

      Yea, mine is hard af to get into gear. I just ordered the Humble Rumble kit. It's my only vehicle at the moment and I have to get to work. Sucks!!!

    I used a rivet gun for the time being. The creaking stopped and I only had to do the outside portion. I'll ride it out for a while and I will let you guys know how long it lasts. Wish me luck lol

      what size of rivets did you use?

    • @billypurdy8581
      @billypurdy8581 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would recommend exploding rivets w larger surface heads because the locking mechanism is superior and surface area is greater

    Did you have trouble getting into gear before and did it fix it? I was told my firewall is crack so it's tough get into gear and not sure if this will help fix it or should get it welded....from the look of it it should be almost as good as welding it xD

      Sonny Nguyen I had the same answer from the subaru dealer. my car was jerking when releasing the clutch. they said it was due to the broken fire wall. what did you end up doing? and did it fix your problem?

    Hello I jus did this but I drilled out all the holes at the same time an I still have the squeek. I'm worried the bracket fell off because I did it all at the same time an that would explain the creek still

    The well farther to the left is impossible to bolt unless you take the dash off

    How did you get to the weld closest to the passenger side without removing the rest of dash??

      It wasn't comfortable or painless but I was able to bolt all the welds shown in the video with a combination of ratchet extensions... good luck!

    Hello,
    I have an 08 WRX hatch and I'm looking to to fix my spot welds using your video. What diameter were the holes you drilled to clear the welds? I'm trying to source the bolts/nuts/washers I will be using. Thanks ahead of time.

    • @limemovie
      @limemovie  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I drilled them out to 1/4" or slightly larger. I highly recommend using one of those stepped drill bits - it's easy to go to the next step if you need to make the hole larger. Most importantly, using the stepped drill bit freehand in sheet metal means it won't suddenly pull through like with a typical twist drill.

      It wasn't especially stiff beforehand but it did feel better after the fix

    I got the same issue but having additional issues because I cant cut the firewall insulation to see the hole, how did you do this?

    • @limemovie
      @limemovie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been a while but I think I had to cut away some of the insulation with a sharp Exacto knife from below. I pushed the knife in and cut with a sawing motion. It wasn't that hard to cut. Hope this helps.

    did you drill the firewall and the bracket at the same time? al already bought the bolts but hoy i now the bracker is in place?

    • @limemovie
      @limemovie  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The firewall and bracket are both thin sheet metal where they are joined. After taking the wipers off, you can see whether the welds for the bracket have pulled away. If you see holes, the bracket may not be in place any more. If the welds are just cracked or a few are still good, the bracket is probably still in place. This is why it's probably a good idea to only drill and bolt one at a time - so that the bracket doesn't move.
      There are lots of great pictures showing the dash removed here that might help explain: www.circuitmotorsports-blog.com/2015/04/the-2008-2014-subaru-impreza-clutch.html

    Saved. Just started happening on my 2012. Think adding a back plate is over kill?

    • @limemovie
      @limemovie  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's probably not overkill. Do you think you could get it to fit tight against the curved shape of the metal?

    • @STInkEYErex
      @STInkEYErex 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@limemovie I was contemplating this yesterday and I plan on experimenting with sheet aluminum to possibly shape a plate using my bend/break and some cuts. I have yet to start, but I will be uploading a video to my channel when I go through the process. I'll be following your lead, I'll give you a shout-out for sure. Hopefully I can get to it this weekend.

      @@limemovie So it turns out my welds were fine. Ended up being a dry input shaft that travels through the firewall and activates the slave. I lubed it up and silence. I also have had the Perrin master cylinder brace on for a year, so I'm thinking that's what saved it. The angles aren't too bad, so I might make a video showing how to make a plate anyway for my fellow subie brethren
