I think it's partly because he spends a lot of time with/reporting on world class climbers like Magnus. So he feels like he's not that good compared to the very best even though he is much better than an average climber.
If Magnus would have climbed shirtless for his third go, clearly he would have won. Joking aside, Matt it's great that you are humble, but you are no longer allowed to ever call yourself an "average" climber again.
I think the ice kind of removes the element of speed climbing that it's almost entirely down to muscle memory being the same route. Like speed climbing skill on ice probably translates a little better to normal ice climbing than the indoor rock versions.
Holy cannoli! This looks crazy! I have to be honest, I had never seen anything about ice-climbing before these videos. I am so glad Magnus decided to make this series!!! Amazing
Amazing! Didn't even know speed ice climbing was a thing. What a great show from both Matt and Magnus. Love these ice climbing videos, Magnus. Keep up the great content!
Hi Magnus, My pre-ordered signed copy of your book has arrived! I am so exited! Thank you for spending your time to create it! It is already one of my favourite books and I haven't even started reading it yet!
Matt is such a legend! I love his commentating. I'll listen to Matt and Stasa commentating any day. They could make climbing the stairs sound exciting...
oh thank fk. when i saw Magnus was fine after the intro, i was watching the Matt like "plz oh plz oh plz oh plz don't hurt yourself." then he finally does hurt himself, but it wasn't bad. such a relief.
Yeah speed climbing would be infinitely more interesting if the routes were different every comp. Can you imagine if the boulders were all exactly the same every comp, no-one would watch.
@@imbaguitar Yeah, it's a good point. Just like the 100m sprint is measuring the fastest runner on that specific layout (straight flat ground for 100m), the speed comps measure the fastest time on that specific climbing route. I think part of the problem is that there is nothing really great or interesting about THAT route that somehow got established as the one we need to care about testing times on. It's a weird assortment of jugs that are not really laid out to test some specific thing. Where as a flat, straight track has obvious value as a baseline for testing running speed.
@@imbaguitar you’re comparing apples to oranges. Climbing as a sport has an almost infinite range of moves, interpretations of beta, styles of climbing which running simply doesn’t have. Speed wall removes all of those variables. It would be similar to having a hangboard comp at world cup events to see who can hang off a 20mm edge the longest. It’s climbing relevant but it eliminates 95% of the variables that makes climbing what it is as a sport. You don’t even have to change the speed route that much each time, but enough to make it require climbing skill and not just muscle memory.
@@jakobjas4212 the problem then becomes with changing routes, the times will be slower and thus make it far less exciting to watch as a sport. There needs to be a balance between purity for the sports sake and some considerations for making it accessible, since that's the only way the sport will grow.
hold on, a dutch guy is the expert?? like from the netherlands?? where we are below sea level and have no mountains let alone columns of ice?? this is such a weird world
Great entertainment, great interaction under time constraints (Which can spoil the personality part of things.), awesome competition with a ,frankly surprising, end and great introduction to a sport I never heard of before. (Not much ice in Australia, just sayin'.) The reality that people go up that in eight seconds is simply nuts.
No one will care, but I am listening to this video with Sennheiser headphones and there is clearly a band doing a sound check/first set during this video and it makes for EXCELLENT background music. Full throttle, ass-kicking tunes.
Matt dared say he thought he would win. From that moment, it was game on! You can't just say something like that to Magnus and expect him to not take the challenge.
Been seeing some of your older vlogs and miss seeing you drink coffee!!!! And sad for you that you gave it up and lost that spark of joy or whatever Marte said 😄 Click like if you think Magnus should start having one cup of coffee per day! ☕️ 💪 😊
"Please pay for my Swiss hospital bill, cause it's really expensive". Hmm, how "expensive" are we talking about, just to sanitize and wrap up a puncture?
Every time epic tv reaches the top he swings down his arms almost hooking himself in the leg...OMG dude, still have to watch his 3rd run. He's gonna freaking stab himself
I think had magnus gone 2nd he would have had him for sure! Overcoming a bar that is already set and watching someone get intense immediately ups the game for a competitive person from doing a dry start.
Ice speed climbing may be brave, but going to Switzerland without proper accident insurance, that is another level.
Lmao
Lol
Healthcare costs in Switzerland are about half of that in the US. Because US healthcare is bonkers.
@@mx2000You can negotiate with the hospital. Just tell them the bill is too much.

Stuck yourself, kept going, fell off and beat Magnus. Can not call yourself an average punter climber ever again, Matt "nails" groom 😂
best British speed ice climber!
You're not subscribed to Magnus's channel?!...tsk, tsk
But you're sub'd to Logan Paul? 😬
“I love you as a person but I was hoping you’d be bad at this” sums up pretty well how a competitive mind works
If Magnus would have climbed shirtless for his third go, clearly he would have won. Joking aside, Matt it's great that you are humble, but you are no longer allowed to ever call yourself an "average" climber again.
Magnus would never have won, you can't use chalk :D
Matt Groom the average climber, not ! Well done Matt and Magnus & only one minor puncture wound 👍
agreed! matt please stop being so british 😂
That man is *exceedingly* Dutch.
What do you mean
@@larsolafvandenham6776 probably tall and straightforward lol
His name, height, and orange hair. Nothing more.

Mad respect to Matt for crushin magnus at this! The man is a legend!
Guess there's no need for me to watch the video anymore now 😅

It’s so cool Magnus edits his own stuff. It feels professional btw
Amazing! Didn't even know speed ice climbing was a thing. What a great show from both Matt and Magnus. Love these ice climbing videos, Magnus. Keep up the great content!
This is some of your best content, interaction with other people, new experiences, and still being a beast!
Love Matt’s dedication in sacrificing his leg to beat Magnus!! Haha
"congratulations on beating me, that doesn't happen often" 😂
Two of my favourite climbing persons !! Great video !! As always, the competitive nature comes out ! Love you guys, so funny to watch !
Matt seems to be the type of person who works best under pressure.

EDIT: I am not disappointed 👌
Very cool! Love seeing you guys go head to head.
Matt is a stud! Great to see the colab - thanks for tracking him down Magnus! Love the health competition as well to get everyone trying hard!
I'm so happy to see a big climbing youtuber speak about all things ice climbing! It gives the sport some much needed visibility!

Almost hunky 😂
love to see you two in the same video!
love your vids magnus
Loving this! So cool
Just 2 genuinely nice people. Loved this collab
Putting it out there, the variation in ice speed routes makes it more interesting than speed climbing (to me at least).
Yeah speed climbing would be infinitely more interesting if the routes were different every comp. Can you imagine if the boulders were all exactly the same every comp, no-one would watch.

Nice video, Dennis and Marianne were my lead climbing instructors back in the day, like 6 or 7 years ago in Bergschenhoek.

Never ever thought this could be a “thing” brilliant . Well done Matt.👍
It's all good, Magnus was wearing his safety t-shirt and cut-resistant handcream.
Would you ever do a “Day in the life of Magnus” video? Showing what a typical day of training, eating, working at the gym, and things like that!?
So much fun being had.
I wanted Matt to win from the beginning :) good job!
Matt is pretty jacked these days. This should be a good race! 🤘😜
I think I like this better than regular speed climbing. I would like to see a speed lead climbing, maybe a video idea
Those green things in the beginning look like... Ya, my Pickle Rick hahaha.
That’s great… and you need to consider the much higher elevation.
"I'm not sure, this is going to be very even" the look on Magnus' face... even he doesn't belive he just said that! 🤣🤣🤣

You should get Matt to come climb with you in your Gym. Or some outdoor in France, bouldering.
When magnus says biggest voice in climbing.... he knows he has almost 6x the subs than epic.....right?
It's more a reference to Matt being the IFSC commentator, not anything to do with epic.
Is there a steel core in the rope? Because I'd be scared of hitting and cutting my rope with the pick.
