It’s fascinating to me how Dune was such an influence on science fiction and it’s only now in 2024 getting to be highlighted and truly celebrated.

Some aspects of Islam and other religions survived through the times and fused into new religions, like the Orange Catholic Bible. Some of those religions were ingeniered by the Bene Gesserit to manipulate people like the fremen. The books have many references to words and concepts of Islam and other religions, but they downplayed it in the films to avoid controversies with different extremist groups and possible censorship in some countries.

I bet Dennis Villeneuve will make Dune Part 3 fill in the gaps that lead into Dune Messiah rather than jumping 12 years into the future. There is so much after Dune Part 2 that needs resolution with Chani, Paul's ascendency, morality and this period of time is all about the Holy War - so there's your action. I really bet it'll focus more on how Chani turns around to accept Paul as the Messiah.

The next one needs to follow the book pattern and be called Dune Messiah.
Here's the irony, though: the "second book" exists because the author had to split his planned novel in two. So in a way, Dune Messiah really *IS* the third part of the same story.

So, Dune Part 1 and Dune Part 2 were named that way because the first book (Dune) was broken into two parts and made into two movies. Since the next movie will be the adaptation of the next book in the series (Dune Messiah) it should not be given the name Dune Part 3 because it is not part of the first book. Since it is a completely different book it should be given it's own name. In other words it should be called Dune Messiah and not Dune Part 3.

The book "Dune" is a compilation of "Dune World" and "The Prophet of Dune", and "Dune Messiah" is only about ¼ the length of "Dune" and provides the most solid ending (of several; it gets weirder and weirder) to Paul's story, so the trilogy that Villeneuve decided on makes the most sense.

  • @brentsmelser

I’ve never read the books… just going to put that out there before my next statement. Dune 1 was impossible to follow, had no action, and had little story; it was just a lot of backstory. Dune 2 made Dune 1 worthwhile and better because Dune 2 was so good at making a payoff from the first movie. Not only did it give me reason to watch Dune 3, but it took me for such a loop of how good this story could be and how wild the story gets. Dune 3 has to meet and exceed expectations, and only way you can do that is by having an amazing story and amazing action. If the second book doesn’t have a lot of action, they’re going to have to force it in the movie, which means they might have to make up some new story, and this will make the book lovers upset.
