The true risk of splitting the first book into 2 movies was how the public would view the first movie vs the second movie given the second movie had all the action. Being that I read the 6 books of the original dune by frank herbert, the first movie was amazing. For those who didn’t read the books, I can see how the first movie didn’t seem all that great. I am glad to see that Villanueve was successful in bringing the first book in 2 parts while remaining decently faithful to the source material. If he had attempted to deliver dune just like in 1984, the movie would have fallen flat on its face. From my perspective, villanueve was caught between a rock and a hard place and yet he yielded a masterpiece in the first film

A masterpiece for the first is a reach if I've seen one. The movie had no climax, no ending, no resolution. Can't be a masterpiece without that. It was a great movie but it very clearly ends aroundish the halfway mark in the book, so I'm not blaming Dennis. But the second movie is on another level compared to the first, something worthy of the title. Either way, I cannot wait to see what he does Messiah and how he's going to tie some of his changes that he's already made.

@@queenb2450You cannot make the first book into a singular movie though, it's impossible so he had no choice if you want it to be good. It has way, way too much content in there to rush for 3 hours. Dennis even cut a bunch of content (understandable) just to make it it fit for a 5 hour length double movie feature. There's about 8-9 hours worth of content that he condensed into 5 which was amazing to see.

The people who keep expecting Austin Butler to act like Elvis in everything need to watch or re-watch him in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The guy can act and it's not like he sprouted out of nowhere to act like Elvis in everything he does going forward. Happy to hear the rave reviews he's been getting for his role as Feyd.

When will people stop harassing Austin Butler about his temporary Elvis inflection? Johnny Depp still sounds like Jack Sparrow even though he was born in the South and nobody talks about it

I think if you don’t care about spoilers for the third film you should listen to Quinn’s ideas videos summarizing Dune. The books cover more of the philosophy, reading it is really hard. But the concepts offered are really beautiful and intricate. The first 2 movies are just a taste of the iceberg. Also, finish Young Justice season 4 and watch the Arkham City cutscenes hahaha. You’re missing out on the good stuff, take your business hat off for a bit and make time for these things. Talk about emotionally moving surprises

Hey Grace, just so you know Dune part 2 is still adapting the first book, Dune Messiah is one of the most depressing books I`ve ever read, And they would have to change it immensely to make it commercial, I wonder if this movie makes a buck if they would try and even more curious if they would succeed...

Glad you liked it! I plan to see it twice to support it. I feel the issue is that this isn't a sequel - it's the remaining acts from the first movie. I didn't even want my wife to watch the first movie until now so it's fresh going into this. I still recommend you read the source. DV has worked hard to stay true to it which I respect and I believe you'll get a lot out of it. Yes I want Dune Messiah, but know that there's no other point like the second half of Dune. It's great and it completes the story of Paul, but think of it like Godfather Part 2 vs 1.

As an outsider who hasn't seen Dune 2, I don't know why Grace Randolph says this movie is based on Dune Messiah since I've assumed Dune 1 and 2 are based on the original Dune novel while Dune 3 will be based on Dune Messiah (Frank Herbert's second novel of his Dune books). Is Grace hinting that part of Dune Messiah novel included in the second movie?

If we get Sicario Denis, instead of Blade Runner/Dune 1 Denis, it stands a chance to be a commercial success, and start a Nolan-lite ascent. I love cerebral sci-fi to death, but I don’t repeat view at the theater

14:17 Zendaya’s great. Her development has been a joy to watch. And she IS 1000% ready to shoulder movies on her own. It’s really great to see a young actress hold it together in this day & age, get better, and on top of that, choose great projects. Not sure how long she’s been in the game. Often it seems like they just show up as a lead one day, when in reality she’s probably been acting since she was a young child. Certainly her early music career made her comfortable in front of audiences and physically able to do different things. I’m really impressed by her.
