Suzuki Jimny 5-door 2024 review: Baby 4WD goes XL to give off-roaders on a budget more choice!

- Here it is! The 2024 Suzuki Jimny 5-door has finally arrived in Australia. To use it's proper local name, the Jimny XL is an extra-large version of the 3-door model, which launched to unprecedented demand off the back of its cute exterior styling and and surprising off-road capability.
The Jimny XL doesn't mess with that successful formula - in fact, it builds upon it with five-door practicality. Yes, the regular version already has a second row of seats, but its big brother's are more easily accessible thanks to its two extra doors, which are enabled by a longer wheelbase.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Senior Journalist Richard Berry gets behind the wheel of the new baby 4WD at its national media launch, putting it through its paces on an off-road track, where he finds how much capability it sacrifices, if any, in the pursuit of better day-to-day motoring.

Love Suzuki, how cars used to be practical no nonsense straight forward layout easy of use and functional!
Watching from the Philippines.
Moved to the Phils 5 yrs ago from the USA. When I moved here, I was on the fence of buying a 3 door version, however it was not practical for my family and I at the time. I’m glad I waited.
Just last month, I pulled the trigger on a 2024 Suzuki Jimny 5 door AT variant for a whopping 1.9M Php ($34K USD). I love my Jimny. Definitely no regrets considering this is my 3rd vehicle here in the Phils now. However, I hate the price and the markup (aka “top up”) Suzuki Philippines dealerships are charging for the AT variants.
It is what it is…
its been a month, has your mind changed ?
@@penlavits3305 After a few upgrade mods (suspension, tires, and accessories) I’m loving my 5 door Jimny even more. Absolutely no regrets.
@@JoeSA671 what suspension brand did you choose?
It's good to see the Jimny hasn't lost much of its charm by being an XL. 👍
It's only 300 mm longer.
Best car forever!
Awesome car but real world market prices are way too high imo
It’s a very good little car
I wonder why they never do on road tests but off road even though 99% off the drivers don't go off road.
Probably because they want to highlight the advantages of owning a Jimny. It is after all built for people who intend to utilize its offroad pedigree while remaining economical to run and easy to maneuver given its compact size. It holds zero advantage over 2wd vehicles in terms of handling or comfort on the road. For that Suzuki offers the Swift.
Funny thing is, the vast majority of 4wds never leave the bitumen, which is just aswell really because the natural environment would really suffer then !
Its now available in Fookin Warwick Nara mara
i think they sould put AGS transmission insted a regular automatic transmission in that 5 doors version. the body of 5 door jimny is more heavier than its 3 door little Brother and also regular automatic transmission is more heavier too i think it wolud be better to use AGS. to solve the weight ratio isue in 5 doors version cut the weight in transmission would be a brilliant Idea.
This 4-door version should be offered here as the new Suzuki Samurai. It would sell very well here now that SUVs are a thing. It should be given a larger engine(1.8-2.0 liter inline four with at least 140hp). It should also have an automatic transmission(at least as an option), air conditioning, and a true part-time 4WD system with available low range and auto locking hubs.
Who needs satnav to be honest if it has Apple CarPlay or the other one? I don’t see that as a negative.
Great little 4wd. Drive my daughterrs 3 door occasionally and it's very fun, the one big let down is the gearing or the gearbox, a 6 speed manual would be great, freeway driving is not what it's designed for, but to get to that 4wd track you need to cruise at speed, other than that issue great fun and zippy 4wd, even in standard form
I prefer Jimny 5-door than the 3-door
Im calling it J wagon
Nice but the 3 door is still my pick
These modified to look like g wagons are cute
When the funny is better 😀🤩👏🏾👏👏🏻👏🏼👏🏽
I thinks it is pretty good choice, cheap and capable, of course not powerful but who wants a real off road to drive fast? Real off are to enjoy the roads without being worried about how fast we can go. We ca Compared to a land cruiser 70 avoid the engine of course but the capability is the same and internal equipment of the Jimny is much better than the landd cruiser
Why on earth don't suzuki offer a larger engine?
Expensive
A single cab ute made with the longer wheelbase
If they'd just made it a proper bigger 5 seater and but more space at the boot and add 1.4 turbo it would be a best seller
That would essentaily made it a Grand Vitara.
@@Kierdziol yes but with a more boxy Jeep aesthetic
@@indianajones4016 I get what You mean, but given how expensive Jimny is, if it were the size of Grand Vitara then it'd be even more expensive - even with 1.4 turbo engine (which might be good for regular five door Jimny, but the last lwb GV have base weight around 1600kg (and it's not even body on frame) so that engine might not have enough pep.
While compact crossovers are powered with similar engines, the 4wd rugged suv should have something bigger.
Look at the gas engine Mahindra offers for Scorpio N - this is what Suzuki should have for a car this heavy.
@@Kierdziol yeh, they could make the Jimny the size of the current vitara so the whole family can fit and have some boot space
@@indianajones4016 That won't work with body on frame.
In order to have the same amount of cabin space as in the unibody design, the body on frame design needs to be larger.
This is also the reason why car manufacturers decided to switch to unibody - smaller, lighter cars that consume less fuel with better onroad handlingp.
Are we not going to touch on how the reviewer sounds like is having... inappropriate thoughts... about the jimny?
At 40k+ drive away, these Jimy's are way overpriced for such a basic car. No wonder Suzuki India had to lower the price due to poor sales, it's not a G-Wagon.
Suzuki India hasn't reduced the prices. They're just giving discounts on unsold stocks.
@@avinash2_😂 What's the difference?
@@rooftile883 These discounts are available for a month only
Pretty much every 4wd is overpriced these days, as those cars became a niche.
Another reason is the brand/model recognition.
If Jimny were made by Mahindra, SsangYong or one of the Chinese companies - prices for those would be more affordable.
Poor man's G-Class is getting more and more expensive
It’s because everyone wants one. Big demand and an even bigger price tag. 🫣
At least You can see Jimny being used for its purpose, unlike G-Class.
Dailmer made a mistake by making G-wagon a luxury suv.
Yeah but so is the rich man's G-Class. All vehicles have become insanely expensive.
36 thou for a box on bicycle wheels yeah nah.
You're running the wrong wheels on your bicycle.
Wow, overpriced and underpowered, should have given it the 1.4 turbo.
