A Freezing Night in the Campervan | Mountain Therapy

  • A white out is a disorienting place to be and I found myself there in the white room on this adventure. However the trip was needed and the mountains provided some well needed therapy for the mind. A grand but freezing cold trip in the campervan to a great spot and a mountain in the snow....

    I lived in Latvia for 5 years and often had long walks in whiteouts and temps well below -10C, sometimes even close to - 30C, but the area I was in was so flat and forested, I yearned for hikes in mountains and would often watch your videos for a bit of a vicarious hillwalking experience. I am back in Northern Ireland now (my homeland) and really appreciate our own mountains (the Mournes) with renewed joy, which are visible from my home village. But now I miss the snows of Latvia!

    Ohhh gosh Murray’s off up the mountain in the snow, you really are a pro Murray, never an accident yet ! It’s amazing that you know just when to put those snow shoes on, I’ve seen many put them on to early and brake their ankles ! Or to late and find themselves wait and shoulder ! High in snow, it would be lovely to have a dedicated video made by you and Murray about these sorts of things, so many people end up in real trouble as they don’t know the meticulous detail around walking mountain safety in this kind of weather, I personally would love you and Gerry to do a teaching video around kit safety and when and when not to use the kit, wind direction and how to approach an accession and a decent, when to change course in the middle, I know you always include this as you go, but your knowledge between the two of you would make a brilliant course ! With respect, Old 🦉 Alaya…. You Rock !

    Murray this video really resonates with why I do the mountains, the sense of freedom from the usual every day grind. Last weekend I spent some time with some new individuals hiking up Beinn Ghlas and Lawers and that gave me an educational perspective on the difference between my last climb in August in excellent conditions to almost full winter conditions. Reason for this was Ben Lawers was in it's full winter conditions in terms of the climb and final approach to the summit. Once descended into the bealach and the traverse around Ghlas is where the education started. Couple of experienced hikers were practicing their ice axe arrests on a snow patch on the shoulder which gave great insight for future reference. Again as always Murray keep these videos coming as the channel is inspirational mate. ATB

    • @ScotlandsMountains
      @ScotlandsMountains  ปีที่แล้ว

      It can get a bit gnarly on Lawers when the weather turns for sure - it is so high it can catch some really wintry weather when other hills are snow free :) a fantastic place 👍👍

    Wonderful video as per usual Murray, A good one to watch to really appreciate Scottish mountain s in winter can be a serious undertaking, and to make sure you have the right equipment and skill level to tackle them in these conditions. Sadly as you probably know a chap from my neck of the woods went missing with his dog around Glencoe and unfortunately they both died. Thanks for sharing Murray and as always stay safe.

      Welcome to the channel and hope you enjoy some of the videos. The van has a diesel heater which has a thermostat to keep warm . Te winter tyres have been great - have them on my wife’s car too - essential for going out on the un gritted roads in winter 👍👌

    Hello, I’ve only just passed my driving during Christmas week just gone (kinda). I know for sure that I’d really love a vehicle something similar to yours, a sort of transit campervan or a campervan. Looking to do similar activities as yourself, what sort of vehicle would you recommend for all weather?

      Hi Jonny - depends what you are after - so many options - I’d suggest looking at some of the camper websites for better info and take it fro there 👍 good luck
      Thanks for watching

      Hi - yes got winter tyres on the van (also on my better half’s car ) they make a massive difference in my opinion 👍👍👍

    Great video. Why don’t you use gaiters? So the snow doesn’t go into your boots?

    • @ScotlandsMountains
      @ScotlandsMountains  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nathan - I have a few sets of gaiters - the trousers on this video had internal gaiters (not as good though IMHO) -
      However the gaiters don’t stop my foot sinking through the snow 😂👍
      Take care and thanks for watching

      @@ScotlandsMountains I’ve found yeti gaiters were the best at stopping snow ingress. I’ve used snow shoes in the US and the Alpes but never Scotland. Always seemed more hassle than it was worth especially as when it gets properly steep and icy you want crampons anyway.
      Very much enjoy your excursions into the mountains. Thank you for sharing them.
