Watching the DVD credits from the 2007 DCI Championships brought me here. Great to hear where these tracks came from. Thanks, Blue Devils! Amazing arrangement.

Thank you for uploading this! I was searching for any recording of the Stan Kenton Clinic coming to Towson State University and found this. I was at the Kenton Clinic during high school in 1975 and 76. The TSU jazz program was revered!

You're quite welcome. I only just found out about the ensemble, and I'm a freaking alumni! I recently moved into a new house and the previous owners left behind their extensive vinyl collection, some 2000 odd self pressings and retail releases, and this was among them. I'm glad to be able to spread these amazing recordings around since it seems like they are hard to come by now!

do you happen to have any of the other albums available? i have this one, but it's a bit worn. i also have 2+2=5 and the first album, eponymously titled the towson state jazz ensemble. would dearly love to have clean copies of them, or at least a download of someone else's clean copies. i wonder who holds title to all the masters from the albums that were done by the various versions of the jazz ensemble? i was fortunate enough to be in the rehearsal hall when hank brought to light all the charts of both 2+2=5 and jazz '76. both made me want so very much to be a musician! i just had to settle for being there, listening, and playing drums on my lap while the band played. odd meter was so much fun!

I have two additional ones I procured, as well as 2+2=5, that I still need to digitally transfer. As to the original masters, I honestly don't know. I would think that either the original recording studios still have a copy, or Towson University's Music Department may still have them.
I found the bulk of my collection of these records because of the house I purchased a few years ago. The previous owner/builder ran a studio from out of their basement for many years, and when he passed nobody wanted his collection of raw masters (vinyl, tapes, reels). I basically inherited the entire thing, so who knows, I may have a master around here (though I highly doubt it). I would need the right reel to reel deck to get anything off it, though. A future project, to be sure. Hopefully sometime in the next few weeks I can update these albums with all the correct crediting, high res pictures, and rip the new ones!

i spoke with a former boyfriend (and still a very dear friend) a month or so ago. he said that hank's nephew (i believe it was) holds the masters. that would make sense. it would be wonderful to be able to re-release them all! my friend played bass 'bone on 2+2=5. heck, i knew the entire band, and most of the band on jazz '76, too.
when i listen to the music, i can see the band, either in the rehearsal room or on stage, blowing with amazing chops, and hank up front, swinging and conducting, in the way only he could. he almost danced while conducting. he had so much passion for the music, and it showed! i do miss those days...

This version is way better than Kenton's in my honest opinion.

@@MWH512 maybe not better musicians, but this interpretation is superior. Also the electric bass is objectively a better choice for this tune, the upright bass just sounds out of place in Kenton's version.

@@thedude9001 it’s also about 50 cents sharp, I assume that’s the quality of the recording but it makes the shout bigger, they also seem to let lose more and all the big moments

I need to go through all the vinyls and make proper scans of the front and back, as well as include a listing of all personnel. I'm sorry it's taken so long but I'll get to it when I can. I have two more albums to convert first then comes the additional detail.

I was a music education student at Towson at this time & was probably student teaching, so was no longer in the band, but for the three years before was a trumpet player in one of Hank's bands. I'd be very interested in a list of band members on this recording. I probably know & have played with many of them. Hope all is well with you all. (Scott Miller)

According to the liner notes on the vinyl, Bill Moore on trumpet, Rich Rice on alto.
