Beautiful! I played for Hank Levy at Towson State University 1979-1983, getting the opportunity to play this and pretty much everything else he composed under his direction with incredible players. His compositions are the best!
@@teddavies5898 Yes, I played lead at Towson for Hank all four years there, granted for the 11 o'clock band, not the evening/touring band, which had the amazing Chris Walker playing lead. Chris wound up playing lead for the Navy Commodores for 25 years before retiring a couple years ago.
Kerry, happy to hear from you. I used to attend the outdoor concerts every summer, and I still have the 1978 Sheffield studio record. It has stood the test of time!
First played this tune about 4 years ago. There is something so unique about it, I listen to it at least once every month. Thank you to the One O'Clock and Hank Levy for this masterpiece.
I dedicated my Doctoral Dissertation to Hank Levy (you can see it on page v): DonEllisMusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/TheExoticRhythmsOfDonEllis-Dissertation.pdf I know first-hand that Quintessence was one his favorite compositions. His #1 favorite was Chain Reaction. :-)
Yes, Rob did a lot of work with odd-time signatures. I was fortunate to start my jazz playing days in South Florida (Piper High and Broward Community College North Jazz Band) and it seemed like we played almost all odd-meter songs from Levy, Kenton, Rob and when not odd meter Maynard, and many of the musicians from these groups would give concerts/classes/guest play with us. The rhythms were a bit challenging sometimes (particularly when improvising), but always fun.
I was lucky enough to be in a college band that commissioned a composition by Hank Levy. One of the nicest and honestly generous mentors I had.

Did you play lead on this chart?

I met Hank Levy at a Stan Kenton Convention in 1991. Told the man he was a genius! He laughed.
I saw Hank in a documentary he seemed quite modest and might have been uncomfortable , people laugh sometimes to hide that

Very nice tune! I’ve visited Baltimore many times in my life and each time I see the sign that says Towson, I think of Hank Levy!
Big band jazz brilliance from Hank Levy. The Kenton influence shines through. Great music that will live forever.
Words cannot describe what the music is already saying
i’m playing this piece in my college jazz orchestra this semester. i’m on the big solo 4th trumpet part. very fun piece

This band deserves a Grammy! God Bless Neil Slater!
goose flesh, inspiring performance
An amazing song
This is beautiful thank you for uploading!
Holy shit
is this where you have to go to dig some Hank Levy big band magic without two hundred senseless quotes from the "Whiplash" movie?
Does anyone have a transcription of the trumpet solo? I'll probably just do one myself but if anyone has one that would be cool.
you don't down vote Hank - blasphemy!
Where can I buy this recording?
This may be too late, but at clip.dj.com, you can just download the audio from TH-cam
was this actually recorded in 2005?

Impressive. Almost as good as the TSU original.
Where can I find the original TSU recording?
@@NiranjanKalyanasundaram Yes. that is a very good question

@@NiranjanKalyanasundaram You can find this recording on a channel called SterArt Recording Legacy. It has many great Towson State recordings up.
