SterArt Recording Legacy
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 ก.ย. 2011
This channel is now a project dedicated primarily towards archiving the master media materials (AMPEX reels, vinyls, cassette tapes, etc) of the now-defunct SterArt Recording Company based out of Reisterstown, Maryland. For over 40 years, SterArt offered local schools, colleges, universities, churches, and other various groups both in-studio and live performance recording services. I consider myself the steward for these materials now, having inherited them when the original owners moved out of the house the studio used to be based in. I hope to preserve whatever I can of SterArt's Recording Legacy. Links will be provided for as much content as possible for download from archive.org.
Additionally, any similar groups or projects I find out about through SterArt's catalog, such as the Towson State University Jazz Ensemble, will also be the target of preservation.
Please leave comments if you have any additional information about any material posted.

I recall this being a composition of then-student bassist Drew Gress. I believe he conducted as one piece of his senior recital.
😂
Hey, bartender! How about another round over here?
Good afternoon, SterArt Recording Legacy. Seen as though I have been unsuccessful in finding an email or any contact information I will try to contact you through this way! I was just wondering if I could use this song for my short film, seen as though I am not sure who owns this music, I just wanted to ask if something like that would be possible! I hope you see this! Thanks so much!! Ryan M
Probe XPD and Green Dolphin St (from later album) are two of my favorite jazz pieces. As a UMD student I had access to Towson's library, which had a copy. Checked it out and recorded from vinyl to Reel. Later converted to tape (to play in my car) and eventually MP3. Even had a chance to play these two songs in HS jazz band, really helped push me since i had two massive solos (transcribed from these recordings). Thanks for sharing these hidden gems.
Why do I love this track so much
I just heard it for the first time in a PS1 Ambient Mix posted by Burst Error. This track is amazing
i'd love to know where Sheffield Productions is
I engineered this recording and I haven't heard it for many years. Thanks for posting it.
I engineered this recording and it's great to hear it again. This is actually the second take. In the break between the second last song and the last song, the bass player unplugged his bass without telling me and we got a huge pop. Ugh. But this take was killer too.
I engineered this recording. It's nice to hear it again.
Wowowoeeee
Are the songs on these albums all original compositions?
Anybody know where Gil Rathel is??
Final Fantasy 10 was the boost that Junya needed, now I know of this obscure soundtrack too.
This kind of music is so underrated
Why is this such a banger, it goes straight into the playlist
played this song for my schools jazz ensemble my junior year, absolutely loved it
A fresh new angle
I love this.
Imagine the sheer number of how many times these guys had to practice this at lower speeds.
This album came out while I was studying with Hank and at the same time, I was a staff arranger with the Army Field Band. Love Hank! What a great musician and a wonderful man.
I have always dug Dave Ferguson's trombone solo on this recording. Incredible performance by everyone on this track.
so good
Awesome solos by Bill Kalkman and Brent Hardesty!
Jim Satcher (trumpet) was our band director in high school. I learned to count to 7 as a freshman when we played Whiplash in Jazz band. We also played Blues Between and Betwixt. He started out at my elementary school in 1983, then he moved to my junior high in 1987, and then on to my high school in 1989. Funny, he always worked at the school I attended. Great guy. He never talked about what he did here. Very humble, but extremely passionate.
i'd love to have a copy of this album🥲
Anything written by Hank Levy and recorded by Towson from this era is gold. You had Don Ellis and Stan Kenton experimenting with time signatures in this era ... Levy's material was often used as a hot bed for experimental music - but so liked! More recordings if you have them, please!!
The Kyle Hollingsworth cadenza solo intro is world-class IMHO 😎
This was one of my favorites for all time. Still listening to it today (34 years later) pretty constantly. I had a transcribed copy of this solo for about 10 years, but has since vanished in my many moves. I'll get around to relearning the solo again someday.
I was in the Towson Band that followed this one. I was fascinated the first time I heard this remarkable band and Hank's music right out of high school. I couldn't wait to play it. And I still am. Just recorded Chain Reaction on my new recording.
Outstanding!
God Bless Hank Levy!
Im here cause of whiplash the movie . Hank freaking Levy huh , wow
Oh. My. Goodness. 1986-87 at Baltimore School For the Arts, Drew Gress (who was the BSA's jazz band director) had us playing this my 9th grade year (He's the bass player on this song). I didn't have the harmonic palette at that time to appreciate everything about this song, but some of music is still burned into my fingers and brain (I played baritone sax on this)......30+ years later. And a few bits from this have found their way into my own solos on other songs over the years. Even more importantly, elements of this song have found their way into my teaching students over the years.
this is so good wtf
The movie Diner was filmed in Fells Point
i have Kenton at Redlands on both cd and vinyl
i have two copies of Soaring, the most recent i got on ebay which is the original BASF,an excellent pressing, the pausa pressing is terrible
It was awhile after Don died that i heard of his passing, i feel it was a kindness to me that i didn't hear so soon
Ashley Alexander recorded a fantastic arrangement of spring Can hang you up the most in 1983
Can’t believe this came from my college
To everyone who pointed out my mistake in the title: thanks, it's fixed now, lol
That was awesome. I didn't appreciate the talent of Bill Warfield back then nearly as much as I do now. This brings back great memories. I knew most of these guy in the band and was the roommate of one for a while. Definitely some of my "good old days". I wonder what became of all these people. Someone please say hello to: Scott Miller
I just finished transcribing the liner notes and, based on the style of writing, can only imagine some of the band antics involved.
The king of 70s chase scene music. Unbelievable arranger. Phenomenal 💯🔥
first comment in a year

Damn! Six in the trumpet section. Played this chart back in the early 80’s. Memories too fond to express. Lloyd Shires, yeah man, think about you often...
We played this in high school at a competition in the spring of '92. This song still sticks in my head after all these years. Our jazz band director was Harry W. who passed away back in 2019.
Sorry I have to post here, but I can't find a contact email. I'm looking for a recording Ster-Art did of the Carroll All County Chorus from 1986. I already have '87 through '89. I have a reel-to-reel player, which if memory serves, is how they recorded that performance.
My sincere apologies for not seeing this sooner. The past two years have shifted my life so that I had to put most of my youtube stuff on hold. I should have it and most likely already have it converted. I will try to get back to you shortly once I've had a chance to look. Also thank you for bringing up the point that I should make a dedicated email for folks who have questions like that. I absolutely want to get these into the hands of folks looking for them.
Perhaps the single most underrated Hank Levy Composition ever
Outstanding sax soli. One of Hank Levy's (a former sax player) best 😎
Dear Musicians, don't let the 2+2 = 5 album cover mislead you -- this track is all in 7/4 😎
IDK if the title appears this way on the album; but as the many other posts of this chart point out, and given Hank's penchant for punning titles, this chart's proper title is "Latintensity."
