I had in my house the tech 5 times and he tear the equipment apart. All I wanted is for the temp to stay at the same degree.
There was a permanent hold button and the tech didn't know. Wow!!!!

From comments here and iOS App reviews with this thermostat it sounds like Trane isn't listening. I'm glad I found this a week before purchase. If they don't have a better offering to manage their equipment... I'm not buying.

Can you pair this with room sensors to control temperature based on room sensors? Ecobee can be paired with multiple room sensors and decide to call for heat/air based on the temps at the room sensors. I wonder if this has that capability.
Thanks for sharing this information my grandmother has a trane central heat and air and we are having problems with the thermostat no no cooling to the right temperature and no heating and the last thing is it will not stay set to the desired temp once typed in so I will try some of these tips and see if we can’t get it fixed

I have this exact thermostat on my new train heatpump. Where do I set the humidity when it supposed to be showing 60 ?? Man is showing 63 Or 65 should I go up to 55% right now I have it on 50% should I go down to 45% to get it to stay at 60 during the summer? Thank you

Any idea how to overide the settings on your trane xl temperature limiter. I want the heat to go lower than the preset 13 degrees celsius
My control unit is the TRANE XL824, and I have figured out all the settings, except one. When I press the Humidity 'button' (which does NOT have any label above it signifying what it is, no 'Indoor Humidity' label), it takes me to another screen where the current humidity is shown in large numbers (and DOES have the label 'Indoor humidity'), but there are no other controls that come up on my screen to adjust this humidity level. What am I missing?
Did you guys get rid of the "nexia" app? Now when I'm setting up to connect my phone to my thermostat it doesn't prompt me to add the 5 digits on the thermostat screen instead it counts down 200 seconds. When i navigate to the smart home enrollment screen, the screen displays countdown to 200 seconds. Which app do I need to use?
I have this thermostat and have never seen "AUX" displayed while in heat mode, even when outside temps were single digits. Does this thermostat display AUX somewhere on the screen? The display panel on the air exchanger in the basement said HP2 when it was 9 degrees F outside. I have electric backup heat strips and it seems they have never been used. Is this normal? I'm in SE Pennsylvania.
What would cause the thermostat not to work? Our repair company tried replacing it with a new one and that didn’t work. The thermostat kept saying initializing and then going on for a few seconds and stopping. After a couple hours the repairman replaced the run contractor outside and it worked for a bit, he left and now when I went to adjust the temperature the humidity screen appeared on the thermostat reading 67% and is frozen on that screen. Shutting down the fuse did not cause it to reboot
Can you tell me about System Mode --> System Options? I have ermergency heat with my heat pump and not sure if this should be enabled or disabled - im afraid enabled means ONLY emergency heat - I cannot find anything on this anywhere.
Emergency heat locks out the compressor and runs solely on electric "strip" heat, which is much more expensive. It should only be enabled when the heat pump is unable to perform.
My Trans Thermostat shows the wrong outdoor temperature for my location (70° outdoors) for central Illinois on Dec. 20, 2022 (today) while the Forecast shows all the Correct temperatures (e.g. High of 37° and Low of 25° today). This issue is brand new and doesn't resolve itself with rebooting. Any thoughts on what's gone wrong? The location is the correct ZIP by the way, and it names my city and state correctly.
It's hot over 85 in my house and it says system idle. I have tried anything I can think of, including rebooting the thermostat and shutting the system down outside by turning the power off and on again. What is wrong. This system is less than a year old?

Hi, i have an xl850 stuck in version 1.0.ER03, i need to manually upgrade because i can't connect to nexia. In order to get Automatic updates you have to be connected to nexia but to connect to nexia you have to be at least on version 3.0. I tried to manually upgrade but when i plug my usb to the thermostat i dont get any command prompts in Sw Upgrade screen. Do you have an idea on how to manually upgrade the firmware? Thanks

Video says that it’s very difficult to program the thermostat without doing it from a computer and I disagree. I was able to program several times schedules within just a few minutes and it was very intuitive.
The outside temperature on my TRANE XL824 is reading 8 degrees higher than what it actually is. How do I adjust that??

Had one Trane thermostat that would no longer display my outdoor weather.. as I further diagnosed it prompt somewhere to update software and insert an SD card which had me baffled and also prompted corrupt data ( ? )
Firmware updates are for the HVAC company to handle. Go to menu>> weather>> location.. Replace the current zip with your own

I was able to connect my Thermostat to my home wifi but when I tried to connect it to Nexia, it keeps telling me that the thermostat was registered to a different house. I just purchased the house and the previous owner installed the thermostat. Could you please tell me how I can remove the previous owner so I can be able to control from my phone? Thank you.

Did you find out the issue with this? I'm able to use my app anymore and not sure what app to use to reconnect. Nexia is obsolete
I have a question. Can only one phone be registered to the thermostat?
We continue to have issues keeping the thermostat on the set temperature.
We set it at 70 and when we check it, it goes down to 67. All this after setting it to permanent hold.
Could someone tell us what could be the issue please. We just changed it to classic mode, not sure if that makes a difference.

It sounds like you are in schedule mode.
Is there a way tk turn on manually? Cause it keeps shutting down when I use the app to change the temperature. And then sometimes it just turns on.

This video doesn't even mention if this unit has batteries or is powered by electricity. My power flickered last night, which made my thermostat freeze and is now showing only a grayish-white screen. I can't select any keys, and my A/C isn't running anymore. It's hotter than hot in here. This video, and others, are SO not helpful when it comes to what i need. Does anyone know how to change the batteries, if it even has any, or is it powered by electricity? I think it has batteries cuz we flipped all of the breakers, and the thermostat stayed bright. Any help would be appreciated.

Under "Menu Screen" you can Enable or Disable Smart Optimization. Great, but "WHAT IS" Smart Optimization? Nowhere in the manual does it tell what it means.....

Just purchased a home with the XL850. When I push the menu on the touchpad, it does not take me to the menu. It also shows there is no WiFi but everything else connects in the room where it is located. All I want to do is dim the display at night so the temperature isn't glaring in my face all night.

Tumbledor & Trickster it’s hard to explain over typing it but you need to remove water from where your ac is
There is a sensor that stops the ac if the water is over flowed so you need to remove the water and it will turn

For scheduling, why does it not let you set a time beyond 11:30pm and 6:30 am? I have this problem on my 850XL.
Scheduling is hard. Watch a tutorial on scheduling. It is difficult.

Great tutorial. Is it possible to somehow disable the stupid screen saver that only gives an option of making the temperature bounce around, or making the screen entirely black? I would like to be able to see the blue home screen at all times. The screen saver reminds me of a Windows 95 screen saver from the 1990s and it is very annoying to see the temp bounce all over the place. I don't want to see a black screen either. Because of this I regret getting a Trane - the Lennox S30 thermostat that I have on the other side of the house is much nicer as it shows the temp normally without bouncing.
Update to my own question -- I switched to the XL1050 model and that one has the ability to disable the screensaver so the blue Home screen is visible at all times. The XL1050 also is more accurate with its internal temp sensor. The XL1050 is a much better model. Avoid the XL850!
What if my system doesn't show nexia? It shows "smart home" instead? Once I click on it, my options are add device, remove device, advanced, and update network. And it says Z-Wave Network
Nexia has been replaced by Smart Home
I'll never buy another Trane. While it can be connected to your router, YOU cannot update the controller yourself, that cannot only be done by paying your local distributor. Same thing, pay your local dealer if you forget your pass code so he can come out and punch in the default code. Thanks for supporting your local dealer, they need it.

How do I lock the settings? I have 2 teenagers that think winter is the time for shorts and summer is time for sweat pants, that the thermostat is a game station to control their environment. Since I pay the bills, I should be able to lock this device!!
Since you don't differentiate between the 824 and 850 models when explaining how this thermostat operate,s I assume your instructions apply to either one UNLESS YOU NOTED OTHERWISE. It would be good to make that clear in the beginning of the video and explain the main differences between the two models. Otherwise very helpful. I too find it difficult to program the unit via the phone app and find doing that on my computer far easier...but that is just me obviously.

I have this exact same thermostat. Have never had an issue. It is not connected to Nexia. ALL of a sudden the screen display is stuck. I cannot make any changes and the display just shows the temperature on the screen saver. No response at all. Is this a known issue and can anyone HELP please ?

Nexia is so complicated is not easy at all to schedule the thermostat the web portal has so much info that it gets very confusing because is not only for the thermostat but other things like lights and security videos
Also the whole unit is only 1 year and 5 months old. Shouldn’t this problem be covered by warranty. I got hit with a 327 dollar bill for time and to replace the run capaciter

This thermostat is garbage. The unit itself produces heat , so it is always colder or warmer than you want it.
To over come this all you have to do is reduce the screen resolution! Your welcome! Obtw, I have this control about 4 years & never had a problem!

If only Trane bothered to depart from this obsolete exterior design to anything closer to Ecobee or Nest...
Buy an Ecobee or a Nest if you want a thermostat that looks like and Ecobee or a Nest.

Do not buy the xl850 . They are junk. Upgrade to the xl1050.
Trane will install in addition to the xl850 a wireless temperature sensor, to make the xl850 work. Without the xl850 will not work. As of 2020.
If it works without the wireless temperature sensor, you are lucky. If the dealer installed a additional wireless temperature sensor, then you got a bad xl850 installed, and paid full price for it.
the worse therosat ever! it is so touchy. trying to set it to 74 in AC. jumpd to 99 then press down and i get 60! heat,the same story.
These things are pieces of shit. I've gone through 2 of them since I got my new hvac(s) - just simply go dark and never come back on regardless of whether or not you disconnect it from the pinholes and reinsert, switch breaker on or off for the heat exchanger. They were "covered under warranty" which is fkin bullshit because they charge me $400 just for "config and installation" so now that this second one died, time to look for ANY OTHER BRAND BECAUSE TRANE/NEXIA THERMOSTATS ARE FUCKING TERRIBLE.
