I have not used one. But based on the concept, you sacrifice the power over the shot count.
Using physics formula, when the mass (bullet or pellet weight) is not changed, F=MA, your acceleration is proportion to your force. Hence, when you regulate the force, weaker but steady kicking power, you get each shot with the same Acceleration from the same kicking force. Without the regulator, you get stronger force in the beginner (stronger damaging power) and gradually decrease as the pressure decrease (Pressure is inverse proportion to the chamber space).
For me, the regulator is a good design, but I purchased my PCP air rifle for its power of damage, not for the shot count. If I want high shout count and high damaging power, I may just go buy a PS-90 rifle.......50 shots of 9 mm bullets in one container and very low recoil force.

    Very well explained.
I like cut out tube and the way you broke down the valve system.
If I want higher steady pressure I could maybe add a cut piece of pvc pipe for a spacer to give more volume ..

    Interesting info Sir
I might have to contact you soon in regards to what I believe to be an earlier version of the Beeman chief regulator
(Got sent to me and I can't get much info on it but apparently it is a Lane regulator)

Ok over here we don't have regulations for power.......... I wonder if these airguns shoot pellets or bullets since some cast their own lead projectiles that don't look anything like pellets......

I have a pilot's licence, am currently finishing a law degree, numerous qualifications under my belt... yet I don't know what a regulator does. So, please explain how that would be a stupid question?

Regulator is for stabilizing output power... you get constant output power if you put it on your pcp tube.
If it doesn't use it, the power will decrease as the pressure drops in the tube.

my discovery shoots accurately between 1,800 psi down to 1,100 psi without a regulator.is it just right to set my regulator at 110 bar?

hi.i would like to ask what's the best set-up for the valve spring and hammer spring for a regulator(set up 110 bar)?is it advisable to use light/weaker spring for the valve spring and a light spring for hammer spring?the content of air inside the chamber is between 5-10 ml.regulated at 110 bar. what's the recommended set-up for this?thank you for your assistance.

I have a 510 carbine superlite with regulator fitted and I'm only getting 60 shots , I also have a 410 classic with no regulator and I'm getting over 90 shots with that , both have same sized cylinders and both . 177, why is this?

It could be the difference in strength of the hammer springs. Sometimes an unregulated gun will shoot lower velocity on the first shots because the hammer spring is fighting the raw high pressure, hence using less air per shot. As the pressure lowers, the hammer spring opens the valve longer, so you can can get a "bump" in velocity for a while until the pressure then drops. The regulated gun gives you more consistent shots, but it then doesn't use all the air from the main reservoir. If it is set for 1000 psi, then it stops sending air to the pellet when the main reservoir drops to 1000 psi or less.
