Wood exhibits its major strength in tension parallel to the grain, and different wood types have different tensile strengths.. Pine is a relatively low tensile strength wood type, while it's not necessarily indicative of it's impact strength or fracture strength it is a soft wood and will no doubt effect the trajectory of your bullets as they pass through as it's more flexible than if you were to use a hardwood like Oak.. There's a reason different wood types were used on warships back in the days of sailing, certain wood types were more (or less) forgiving to cannon ball impacts, lighter wood types would splinter more easily and cause more crew injuries when impacted with a cannon ball and other woods would hold their form and the ball would puncture through them with less breakage of the beam or plank (depending on which part of the ship it was from).. a 12 pounder cannon back in those days was about 121 caliber.. give or take some and naval engagements were ideally fought between 200-300 yards so these woods would take the impacts and depending on the angle would sometimes only dent. Wood is fun, right? lol

I mean, the 3rd shot only penetrated halfway into the ballistic dummy even at just 15 feet and after having many other shots put in the tree as well so the shot had an advantage due to weakened integrity of the tree. You’d usually be shooting at least 4 or 5 times this distance with any sniper rifle and at a fresh tree as well. A 50cal with a 15x scope equipped on a map like Miramar you’d be shooting 100+feet. I doubt it could penetrate a tree at 50 let alone 100 feet with only this kind of penetration even with 2 or 3 shots as well.

Very interesting! I'd always wondered about how that would go, thanks for answering the question. As for the tree I suspect it would be fine. The copper jackets could possibly damage the tree if enough of them finished up in the cambium layer just under the bark but the heartwood in the middle of the tree is essentially "dead" and it's function is just to support the growing parts of the tree in the cambium layer. Great vid!

years ago I'll drink 12 cups of strong black folgers in one day, once i down a couple pots of coffee I'll go out and shoot 1/4" groups with my old Marlin 22lr. I'm not kidding. For some reason hot black coffee makes me almost sleepy, and if you think It's not strong I fill a standard size filter completely full of coffee grounds per pot

the 50cal is one of my fav snipers i first used this gun in call of duty and even in cod it can kill someone in 1 shot so it goes to show how powerful it is
