I find it baffling that a browser “built for gaming” takes such a massive hit on ur computer’s performance and that’s the biggest reason i don’t use it anymore
tbh a lot of search engines are so heavy its ridiculous. edge is supposed to be light but yet it has my pc with 1-3 year old parts stuttering with three tabs its ridiculous. i remember being able to not watch the tab count and still be fairly smooth as long is wasnt video tabs
literally all you need is firefox with a tab discarding addon (basically unloads/puts to sleep tabs that aren't being used) for "gaming" performance. Opera GX is such a scam.
@@jesuschrist711 There's a reason every web browser out there is a Chromium reskin - making a new web browser is on the same scale of complexity and funding as re-making all the software needed to get an F-16 in the sky. Modern web browsers are effectively their own operating system now. Really heavyweight, really slow, really terrible operating systems. Did you know there's an entire standard for your web browser to use VR goggles? There's also one for using Bluetooth, USB, Xbox 360 controllers, etc. Has any web developer drafting these standards stopped to ask: does _anyone_ want a web page to do this? I did a back-of-the-napkin calculation: W3C, the organization responsible for web standards, has written about _11 million words_ worth of standards, and that is only counting the actual, de jure standards, not commonly-used extensions or recommended drafts or anything. You could fit the latest standard for (the famously convoluted and feature-creep-prone) C++ _and_ War and Peace into that many words, and have room to spare. It really doesn't help either that Google effectively has a monopoly on how the web looks and feels now, since it's so impossible to make a new web browser from the ground-up that people have just been forking Chromium. The closest "competitor" to Chrome is Firefox, and Mozilla would rather lay off all their competent engineers and pat themselves on the back for evangelizing Rust to non-engineers than keep up with Google.
I think that people misunderstand the "value your privacy" statement. It doesn't mean that they will make sure your privacy is safe, it means that they understand the price value of it which usually leads to them happily selling it to someone. Also, anyone who understand browsers and how websites work, would never use it as their main browser.
You're not at all wrong, but there should definitely also be attention drawn to the manipulative practice of implying that they keep your data safe. When they say they "value your privacy", they're not directly lying, but it can be taken very similarly to somebody saying they value you, or otherwise, they care about you, and the connotation behind that is fairly positive; "this person values me, that means they're fond of me (or any other positive takeaway)". So naturally, one who doesn't look farther than surface level would interpret "we value your privacy" as just corporate talk for "we keep your stuff safe", when in actuality, they're collecting your data for their own purposes. Are they lying? No. Does that mean that their statement isn't inherently deceitful? Also no. For them to feel the need to incorporate a statement as double-faced as that as a big part of their entire brand image should be a big, red, blaring alarm to not trust that browser
People install a "gaming" browser without questioning why its promoted literally everywhere - a browser. And then they dislike videos pointing out its spyware.
@@Take19797when was the last time u saw a youtuber sponsor google chrome, or microsoft edge, or an ad for firefox? they dont promote their browsers because people already use them, i believe this is what OP meant, not saying that these browsers dont have their own shady tactics already... but opera gx is just known to be controversial and criticized by many youtubers for its shady background and practices, including the twitch incident it had, i cant say more about it, you can look it up online.
Honestly, the most problematic and suspicious thing about Opera and Opera GX at the moment is just how few videos are available discussing the browser's bad side in any depth. I tried to find more about it recently and all I could find was less than 10, before continuing to scroll down only brought up completely unrelated videos.
The old Opera Software, back when it was an exclusively Norwegian company was a huge innovator in the Browser space. Browser Tabs? Their idea! Integrated manual ad block feature, tiny resource-light browser for low end devices, integrated TTS... But just being good doesn't win you the browser war -- you have to be the one that sets the page compatibility standards! The true idealistic successor of "old Opera" is Vivaldi. The only browser with an engine whose features aren't dictated by Google -- Firefox.
Firefox is an ad company now... Want to know more about Firefox, go watch Lunduke. Also Google is default search engine in FF so one could say it is directly sponsored by Googles money. Was Opera user from like version 7 to 12, now Vivaldi user is my main.
@@ethandrake5380 Mozilla has been getting most (~80%) of its revenue from Google in exchange for keeping it the default search engine, yes. Firefox's existence may also play a role in keeping anti-monopoly scrutiny on the down low as a bonus.
I stopped using it and uninstralled it, and the very next day, I was flooded with scam messages and scammers approaching me on various different website. So yes, it not only 99% sold my info, but also many other security concerned stuff like locations, passwords and stuff
sounds like a meme cause I had the browser and an opera account, I uninstalled it and deleted the account after like months and nothing else happened, only when Brave browser used the bat coin and then my dumb but tried to cash out but couldn't cause I ended up not trusting Gemini and then that site got breached and you can expect what happened next. At least I use more than one email and don't reuse passwords cause that'd be a nightmare
Imma be honest the only reason im still on opera GX is cuz any other browser doesnt have the workspace functionality. I tried Brave, and it was great, but im just so used to workspaces I cant live without it.
"Opera doesn't have any options to automatically clear history or anything like that. Only entries older than 3 months get deleted." Who is the fucking prison worthy degen that thought that was a good idea?
They really think that sponsoring every youtuber on the planet and a cute anime vtuber girl could save them from the shit show that is the company runs opera.
its absolutely disgusting that people can watch her knowing that the company behind opera is scummy as shit. i will gladly give my info to the US gov but NEVER China.
omg but they have a social media twitter guy thats so funny and so relatable!!! This billion dollar corporation is so funny and relatable to us young kids!
The fact that the penguin's operating system doesn't even have a native build of Opera GX for it should say something. Mostly because if it ain't there then there is something really concerning that security experts would catch immediately and completely shut the entire operation down.
how would "security experts" shut the entire operation down? Software like discord that is proprietary, partly owned by china, and confirmed to phone-home is literally on every distro, why should operaGX not be? I'm not defending opera here tho, it's a garbage browser
I remember uninstalling Opera GX, then all of my accounts getting broken into. For legal reasons I am not acussing Opera of anything, BUT I think that they sold my info on the black market, after uninstalling GX. REMEMBER that that is just a theory... A WHY OPERA GX IS TERRIIIIIIIIIIIIBLE theory
I think this is an important video in that it makes people aware of the possible dangers/downsides of using Opera, but it also doesn't address why people actually want to use it. The sidebar is an absolute game changer for me, as well as the different contexts it provides. I get to have a "home" workspace where I keep all my emails open, then a "fun" workspace where I chill, a "videos" workspace where I keep the lists of videos I want to watch... And the frequently accessed stuff, like messaging services is always accessible on any space. For someone who uses a lot of tabs like me this is a HUGE benefit. You've convinced me that dropping Opera is a good idea, but not shown me any other software that would provide similar benefits. Could I get stuff like sidebar workspaces with chrome add-ons?
Once got a virus on my computer that messed up a lot of settings and files but most annoyingly downloaded and locked Opera as my default browser. I will never use something that a virus wants me to have. Firefox always (which also has a mini-player and screenshot tool)
i get majority of these arguments, but idk. i’d much rather you dig into the actual maliciousness of opera gx than dig into it’s ui. i feel like “it’s hideous” isn’t much of a good display of the faults of opera. majority of the video is just complaining about the small stuff within the actual browser that’s meant to be customised. it just seems like bad faith.
he mentioned that he made a previous video that also reviewed gx, idk if he goes into it there. he said at the beginning that he was going to be revieing the browser on the merits of design and features so that seems beyond scope
@@evanboeckler9610 i’ll give that one a watch, but overall this seems less like a review more of a complaining vid. still unsure, i do want to be proven wrong
@@flarflecakes i felt the same here, the video its supposed to be a review, so we kind of expect a neutral review, not that opinion reviews are wrong, but its kinda disappointing 😕
I mean yeah, he says "why" but I say "why not?" Features are convinient enough for me and it's better that they're built into the browser, I enjoy the customization and don't really mind the UI but I'm definitely curious about the malicious intentions behind the company
@@voteforfire because it bloats the browser. It's fine if you enjoy these features, but many of them available on different non-sus browsers like floorp.
I actually really like the sidebar and UI, and although it uses more memory I find that it runs much more smoothly than other browsers, but with all the potential security problems am thinking about making the switch. What is recommended these days?
If your concern is privacy then it doesn't matter what you choose. Privacy is a myth. All companies steal your data, they just don't tell you. Also the brave browser has been in a crypto scam or something
1: i think opera gx looks gross, just customize a firefox or something 2: if you like the sidebar then use edge, microsoft already has all of your data anyways
This. everything else in the video was fine but the rant about "Oh the UI and path finding features just plainly suck >:( blablablabla" just had me sitting there like Some people have multiple expansive projects going on. In general just more than 3 tabs open at a time, the sidebar for me is genius, most of its extension features i dont use, cause dedicated Twitter or Messenger or Instagram just works better But my ability to essentially have multiple browser windows open in a single browser window is a life saver, i have a side bar section dedicated to every streaming service i use and for those without a "My list feature" a tab for every series i wanna watch so i cant forget about them when they are just sitting in a folder in my bookmarks, another for shopping and gifts n stuff, one for general use, and one dedicated to youtube videos that i use for tutorials and the like. I am a messy broswer user and i found out i have 100+ tabs open, without the ability to segment them i would have 100 tabs in a single tab bar. And the aesthetics customization is pretty neat, i like that it can play artificial sounds of soft keyboard presses
Sponsorships for Opera GX are so funny to me. It never gets old seeing people clearly repeating some corporate fluff about how all these idiotic features aren't plainly pointless and instead trying to spin them as cool or good somehow.
"Thank you to Opera GX for sponsoring this video." Incorrect! TH-camrs who get sponsored by Opera GX should not thank them for sponsoring their videos, as Opera GX is spyware, so therefore they shouldn't thank Stupid Opera GX for sponsoring their video.
I think the idea of setting emojis to specific tabs and having the minimize tabs is honestly really innovative and should be introduced to other browsers
I was happily using Opera GX until it up and just broke on me one day. It was working fine earlier, and then bam, I couldn't even open it. I had to use bing to reinstall Chrome and then proceeded to very gladly purge that useless mf from my computer.
I had the same experience with nearly every other browser I've installed. It's not just an opera problem in my experience. Firefox straight up wouldn't work, Chromium memory leaked every time I opened it (I still have no idea how that happened honestly), only thing that I haven't had a problem with was Edge.
This happen to me as well it just broke I only liked it because of the customize themes and stuff It had so much customize things but then one day it broke then I found out about Vivaldi and started using it to this day I still use Vivaldi
@@VoidHxnter Thats because Microsoft Windows 11 BREAKS other browsers on purpose. Even installing any other browser than M$ is a horrible pain under 11 and they try to discourage their use at every step and long afterwards. M$ sabotageware.
I feel like this video is a little too critical, there's a bunch of points in this video that are "I don't find this useful and so therefore it is bad". When I used to use opera gx I used and enjoyed a lot of those features.
Exactly! The review seems way too focused on personal preferences rather than objective flaws. Just because the reviewer doesn't find features like the keyboard sounds, tab effects, and the unique design useful doesn't mean they lack value. Opera GX has clearly tried to offer a more immersive and customizable experience compared to browsers like Chrome, which lack those built-in features altogether. Sure, performance concerns are valid, but calling everything else 'useless' feels unfair when so many people actively enjoy them. Honestly, the comments here feel like everyone is just jumping on the negativity train without acknowledging how innovative GX actually is.
So, if I had "Xi Jin Ping looks like Winnie the Pooh" in my Opera GX search history, there's a chance for the Chinese government to see it and send military after me?
I'm on opera gx... I haven't finished the video, but I personally love it since it helps me in so many ways. it has a fake but useful vpn, isn't slow like chrome, and it feels more comfortable than chrome. I'm going to finish the video now and see how much my opinion changes..
ok. I finished.... I am slightly concerned about my privacy now, but I still like Opera because it doesn't make my pc heat or slow down as much as when I use edge or chrome, the ad block works just fine for me (except when sites like TH-cam want it off), hey, why you you guys hate the keyboard sounds? me and my viewers find it satisfying!!! I already turned off whoosh sounds so that's no problem for me, the design doesn't bother me, also nobody mentioned that almost all browsers actually already have some kind of miniplayer (right click the video twice to enable picture to picture) but I prefer opera's since it's easier to use, I've known the vpn isn't really a vpn for a while, but it still encrypts and protects my data. I can't pay for a good vpn yet, so I'm fine with opera's fake vpn. The video only said it's a proxy service that tanks the network service, but it still does a good enough job of protecting my privacy for my standards.
at 8:18, you can also drag videos out on your desktop on chrome. step one: double right click the video. Step two: press intergrated image/or the eight line.
@@NineGenaizys you can uninstall it, just Remove all the Files and watch a video on how to remove .opera that appears in download folder (shows up on other profiles too and you need hidden folders enabled, removing all the files fixes Ccleaner not showing a Ghost Opera/Opera GX)
I've been considering switching back to firefox, partly cause I don't use 99% of the features in Opera GX and I thought I was noticing performance hits I didn't have before. Personally, I like the clicky sounds, but they aren't enough to justify me using the browser when I honestly just enjoy firefox's simplicity a lot more. Not to mention the privacy and security it provides and how transparent they are. I find myself aggravated everytime Opera touts an update, as it just feels so corporate, like they want me to buy something. As a bonus, the firefox logo is super badass.
you should switch to firefox! it's the only major browser excluding ios's safari not built on chromium (like chrome or edge) and continues adblock support even after the whole youtube anti-adblock debacle. for that i recommend ublock origin
I came here because I wanted to be informed of the dangers of using Opera GX but ultimatly, im just listening to someone voicing their opinion on opera gx design and features, i would love the privacy issues to be explored further, but the only conclusion i came to was that chinese company sells data, what a surprise. I will continue to use GX because I do actually enjoy the features, customization and layout.
Yep, there are people claiming that after they uninstalled opera all their accounts were hack but honestly i think they just fucked up and are blaming the browser. Ive never had any problems
7:30 it may just be me but I think the clicking noises especially when typing would be fun if your keyboards quiet, but I also like sounds and hearing feedback so I know I'm doing something
I stopped using Opera GX Christmas of last year, and the reason I uninstalled it was around December of 2023, for some reason weird dark pixels started showing up for some reason while using Opera GX, now this pixels always showed up either while clicking into a website, or signing in my accounts, the biggest red flag and what made me uninstalled it was when I made my Window Security very strict, the moment I did that and the day following, it kept on warning me about the OperaGX file on my system. Very recently, 6 months after uninstalling Opera GX, I just found out that there were still Opera GX files hiding, and it was storing and making new temp files with who knows what.
It really is exceedingly disgusting how GX treats its users once they decide to leave. I've gotten several other comments similar to this, and indeed on my machine I noticed portions of GX playing around after I installed--nasty.
Opera GX was advertized to me a while ago as a browser with low maintinance and good features. When I lowered the performances on Opera GX I saw little to no change for the performance. I ended up just going back to chrome as it clearly was missleading.
I actually like Opera's design, and that's the main reason i use it. Today, browsers are essentially the same, with very few major differences, so the cool design and the ability to modifiy it is a huge point for me. I do like the sidebar, and i wish other browsers had it. On the other hand - i hate bookmarks bar Performance wise, i don't really care, i had up to 300 tabs opened (currentyl over 150) and i've never had any problems with it (until last update, wich limited the amount of tabs that can be opened) 7:30 I actually love that part. The sounds feel very nice to my ear. i've never had any problems with adblock neither. Overall it's good for me. Althought i am kinda frightened about the ammount of people in the comments mentioning getting viruses from it xp
Vivaldi isn't much better than opera in the privacy factor. It might be even worse. Try LibreWolf for a change, this is what I would call a quality difference. Highly recommended.
@@jordanjones9284 Performance of browser depends on your extensions and the amount of eye candy you have enabled. Theres a certain limit to optimization whne its using chromium.
I feel like Opera GX significantly slowed my computer down ever since I deleted it. I just built it a few years ago and it used to be able to have multiple tabs open at once without a problem. Now I can’t have more than four tabs open without it stuttering my computer
@@ViSogno yes, and it updated too. Some stuttering still occurs. I also noticed Opera had something running in the task manager in the background after I deleted it off my computer, but I ended it and it seems to be a bit better.
I will say, having used waterfox a bunch, having a screenshot tool built into the browser can be really handy cause it can capture certain html elements. Basically making it easier to get the perfect size/element and even letting you screenshot stuff that isn't necessarily visible to you, but is rendered in the html.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, Opera is based in Norway, where it was originally founded in 1995. In 2016, it was purchased by a Chinese investment firm. So, it’s owned by some Chinese investors but headquartered in Norway and has no connection to the Chinese government. Opera is based in Norway, which means it’s accountable to the privacy laws and rules that govern the European Union. The big set of relevant rules here is the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation Law). (Norway isn’t technically in the European Union, but it has a separate deal with the EU via the European Economic Area agreements, so it’s functionally a member of the organization for practical purposes.)
Can you tell why freaking Firefox isn't one of the top recommended browsers to switch from Opera GX since it isn't blank based and it can be Super private if you customised all of its settings
I just can't really take the privacy concerns seriously when it really just boils down to, "they're doing what American companies do BUT THEY'RE CHINESE SO ITS BAD"
Also its probably relevant to your specific specs but personally when just doing basic web browsing even without limiters Opera GX is significantly less intense in CPU and RAM than chrome on my system, it only starts to rack up when actually using those bloat features that you can completely ignore Edit: tho yes just having it open on the home page haven't opened anything it does use more than chrome on the home page haven't opened anything, but as soon as I load a page chrome just skyrockets and opera barely moves
This morning i got a virus after accidentally cliking a pop up torrent ad, guess what browser was downloaded and set as default browser without my consent? Also someone tried entering my steam account right after uninstalling it, opera sucks dude
@@MaquiaveoNose this doesn't really say a lot about the opera themselves tho, they use affiliate links, where they sponsor someone and if someone uses their link to download opera they get paid, it's significantly more likely that that's where that came from then opera themselves, it is a risk created by using affiliate marketing for a software tho Good Game Empire is another good example of this despite being a legit company their affiliate advertising program means that you frequently end up getting a good games empire shortcut (which leads to the actual game) when you get malware
Opera GX is clearly a product that clearly relies on parasocial endorsement over actual need or performance. When a product chooses to market itself the same way as scams like Better Help or Established Titles, suspicions should be raised from the get go... burden of innocence, not guilt at that point imho.
Good presentation and video. One piece of feedback, when you said "look at these ugly widget pins, how ugly are they? wow, and next to the SEARCH bar" I'd suggest for you to try provide an alternative at that moment, because i couldnt really follow what was wrong.
I just like the browser. Some features aren't for everyone. The browser sounds can be annoying to some people, but I personally like them. I've found use for many things you pointed out were unnecessary. The release dates of games on the main page helped me find some of my favorite games ever. It is ultimately up to preference and how risky you are going to take your safety on the internet (if there really is any safety left anymore.) Sure, its scummy that they say they value your safety and privacy only to try and backstab you in the end-user license agreement. I get it, but I personally have found more use using this browser as opposed to Firefox, Edge, and Chrome. Edit: Also, with the performance issue, i have never had any issue with the browser tanking my performance in games.
I appreciate the effort that went into this video, but I personally wouldn't have shit on the browser UI/UX so much, because that makes the video seem like it's biased all along and it gets harder for a lot of people to differentiate your opinions from the crucial facts in the video.
@@renrevial Yeah this isn't the level of review I was looking for. Can you like explain why it's bad then? And don't say "it's web3 trash" because all of the web3 parts can be disabled.
this is why i still use firefox lol Edit : just remembered that firefox has built in mini player and screenshot whichs works quiet well. also it has ublocker extension which to me was the most lightweight adblocker (and works) that i tried
There were definitely a lot of fair critiques and concerns in this video, the fact that it takes away more resources than a normal browser not built for gaming is pretty hypocritical (thankfully my pc is already pretty shit so I haven't really noticed.) and some of the license agreement did sound a bit fishy. What I would like to mention though is most of what you brought up in the design section and after felt (relatively) subjective. I get where you're coming from with some of it not necessarily needing to be a feature but (even if I don't always use them) I personally enjoy some of the audio features they have. It helps that you can customize them so if you don't like the default you aren't stuck with it. Also while a simple bookmark bar may suffice to some people I think the sidebar can be pretty useful and has become my preferred option. Overall though I think this is a good video even if I don't agree with a handful of it, thanks!
I agree with all of your points on privacy however you have to realize the design language argument is entirely your opinions. For many people it is the design language of apps like Chrome and safari that are severely lacking. Additionally more than anything I find the browser is best suited for people with adhd. All the little animations and sounds and visual effects don't make the browser run faster or be more useful, but they make working on the web more engaging and slightly less excruciating.

@@Infact77fr people keep on saying that their data gets leaked, but I doubt Opera GX would have anything to gain from leaking one person’s alt emails and hent@i history
for me the main reasons I use it are aesthetic control/ui feel and sidebar AI/insta/connected apps functionality. Especially as an engineering student, pulling up AI explanations in the sidebar vs a new window is far more convenient. and with tabs, chrome usually ends up using more resources.
To me, it felt like you already had a hidden hatred for it before even doing the review. I do agree with some things, like the sounds that activate (I just turned them off) and the settings being a full mess, but then some, like the comments on GX corner, side bar, mods (I like to have personalised browser), and so on, just hit flat for me, I feel.
Your point on the Chinese company is incorrect, why Kunlun is a Chinese company its headquarters is in Norway and in Mutahar's (SomeOrdinaryGamers) video he talked about how because of that Norway's policy protects user data and does not allow Kunlun to take and publish user data to the Chinese government.
@@earthboiproductions2407By that logic don’t use anything that could get data on you. Even if they say they won’t sell it they could do so anyway. That essentially means don’t use the internet.
Firefox, Brave, Edge and Chrome also have a screenshot function as well as a mini-player for videos to work outside of the normal browser GUI. Firefox and I believe Edge or Brave too give(s) you the option directly in the field of the video while Chrome has the option right in the tool bar behind an icon with a music note.
5:48 I really do have to mention this section of the video was overlooked and I find most of Opera's newer features and sidebar features useful like usually for a while i have been able to keep up to date with almost every free Epic Games or GOG release for the past like 2 years, aswell as even in the event of Fallout London's release its displayed on this GX corner as an advertised mod bringing imo more news and and overlook to that on a broader scale now for recent games, so obviously i think there's some innovation thought within it
I know people will dislike this comment jus because you said Opera GX was bad in the video, but to be fair there are interesting features in it and very real uses for them. Putting aside the fact that you dismissed the browser over subjective preferences instead of focusing on the evil that the company does, "Why? why? why?" is the same mentality that would've dismissed the iPhone when it came out. "What is wrong with the existing music player and browser on the Nokia N95?" well.. there's nothing "wrong" about the bookmark bar, but it cannot be compared to the sidebar. They're just not the same. There are so many nice QoL features that Opera in general contains that just aren't present anywhere else.
Your first mistake was actually thinking that youtubers can give a non biased review on anything. Half this review was "uhh opera bad cause china + data steal!". You cant even trust youtuber mfs for MOVIE reviews. There's always so much bias. If they like the movie they'll tolerate everything, and if they don't they'll nitpick every little detail.
after seeing this video and others too, i kinda want to uninstall opera gx. only problem is after looking at some comments on this video, some people mention that some of their accounts get hacked and etc. after uninstalling opera gx. im kinda scared to do anything rn, what should i do?? (i already changed most of my passwords for stuff i use all the time, but im scared they somehow find it anyway)

@@kakorotskywalker alright, well i just uninstalled it and i had already logged out of all my logged in accounts on opera gx. hopefully i dont get hacked but ill let u know if i do.
I ditched GX because of the performance and privacy issues, but the criticisms you make in this video don't really seem fair. A lot of these things are completely subjective, like I really liked the UI and sounds. If you don't like them then just turn them off, a lot of them aren't even enabled by default, so you intentionally turned on a feature you didn't want just to complain about it. There's really only one non-trivial feature that I liked, and it was the workspaces, which let you have multiple different instances running from the same window, but there's other features that clearly have a use for someone, even if I didn't use them. The GX corner has genuine use. Yes, opening steam shows more information about *steam* games, but the GX corner thingy is an aggregator, it shows things that are from not steam. It's not meant to have much information, just enough for you to tell if you're interested, and if you are, you can look up more info yourself (like on steam for example). Again, if you don't like it, then just turn it off. Half the things you talk about are features in chrome and firefox too. You can pin websites on the new tab page, they even get pinned to the exact same spot as in opera, right below the search bar. Adblockers not working very well is literally just a chromium thing. Tracking general location and pages seen is standard practice (I LOVE CAPITALISM!!!!!!!!), and the rest of the features are just built-in extensions. The game widgets aren't even a new thing, you've been able to install games as extensions on nearly any browser for the longest time and if you don't like them, get this, just don't install them. Some people want a little sqare in the corner that shows the weather, or time, or just matrix letters falling. Some people want websites pinned to their sidebar. Valid criticisms are things like "the performance is trash" and "it gives your information to the chinese government", not "I don't like this optional feature that I enabled". To answer your question of "who would want this?", the answer is gamers. Who would have guessed.
This!!! If he wants to make a review he should do valid criticism - like his older video on GX. But complaining about design features (and that was like 8 and a half minutes of his 9:45 video)? Wtf really.
and the "it gives your information to the chinese government", isn't it obv it will chinese or some other goverment or company? all browsers get your personal information regardlessly
Honestly you made a good point about Opera GX. I hate that browser a lot but please for the love of god do not promote Chrome in its place. Chrome is just as bad if not even worse in terms of privacy. Use Firefox.
I'd say firefox is a better choice but it isn't all that great. Both in performance and privacy. imo I recommend something like ungoogled chromium, brave or librewolf. I haven't used vivaldi but it seems like a better opera.
Not just privacy but also performance wise. The terrible ram consumption is the reason why I switched to Opera GX and will absolutely not be going back. I don't care what anyone says I'm 100% picking Opera GX unless there's something better out there performance wise (especially RAM wise), which I have not found yet bc ppl keep reccomending Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Chromian, etc. If all these browsers are shit and steal your data, it's just matter of picking the shiniest turd. For me that is Opera.
funny that you think there is a difference. "privacy" is just a marketing strategy, as is incognito. Its literally impossible to have a browser that doesnt track data at all, because they would make zero money. Its free BECAUSE they sell your data
I don't use Opera GX anymore and I don't think anyone should but my god your takes on the UI are quite awful. You're basically just saying it's outdated and clunky without giving a point of reference to what you think is the optimal UX for a web browser. And web content? It's a browser not a search engine. I enjoyed and used it for its UI specifically since it's obviously more modern and easier to use than say Chrome or Firefox which still use typical unrecognizable lists that make you dig through menus just to find a specific setting. At least with opera it had clear toggles and actually really good theming options. And yes, I use the shortcuts on the homepage. Not really sure what you found bad about them.. They look fine. Sure, some sites won't show a logo but aside from that they're large and easy to click and view from a glance. On edge (Yes, I know it's setting the bar low) the icons are miniscule, and I like having bigger icons for things like this personally. Do I still use OperaGX? No, I'm very much aware of the privacy concerns although it's not too different from what American corporations are already doing. Only difference is that it goes to China and not our government. Bloat as a term has lost all meaning, Just because you don't use these features does not mean others don't or won't. It's easy to call anything bloat because it means nothing..
seems like alot of things complained abt were just different rather than bad, like the sidebar and stuff. the gui is fine i think (i personally would like the shortcuts and bookmarks to have custom images you can put instead of just letting it choose, but thats more of a nitpick since i dont really use the shortcuts or bookmarks myself), i like the customization and also i rlly like the keyboard/swooshy sounds.
To be fair, just about every search engine makes a lot of money by having ads every time you search, like if you search "good gaming pc" you'll get websites that pay to be the first thing to show up, which is why Google also makes so much money.
So as someone watching on OGX, I can understand why people don't like it, but are there any suggestions on what to use instead? Is there a browser that isn't slow and doesn't sell ALL of my data? I'm not even asking for zero selling, just minimal.
Based on personal experience and comments from others, firefox is the best unless you have an old and very slow computer. In that case chromium, not chrome, seems to run a bit faster.
I use hardend firefox, legit get more cosumization, and my browser doesn't need keyboard noise brh. I do miss chromium addons but i'm never going back the chromium based browsers
I switched to Firefox from Opera (not gx) and the biggest thing I miss is the tab workspaces. I've found an extention that kind of works but it isn't nearly as good. If it wasnt for chromium fucking up TH-cam adblockers I might go back to Opera
I like the sounds of the browser probably due to some sensory thing in my brain. I legit do not care if my information is being stolen because I’m not doing anything seriously important on the browser. It does use a lot of resources but not enough to make a difference for me. The game thing at the bottom is annoying and the sidebar does get a little useless, but I can’t speak on that because I only use the my flow thing. Overall, hard disagree but I can at least understand why you don’t like it.
@@POzzzzzz Yes. The only parts it’s objectively bad on are the information stealing and the more resource usage. Other than that, I think it’s actually a pretty good browser.

0:45 the only reason why I could see people use opera GX is because of the performance limiter (use firefox if you need less resource heavy browser) and maybe because of the new stuff page on the front page. The sounds and music and animated wall papers seem like the ultimate distractions. Music has strong psychological effects and you don’t want to mix up work and hobbies like that. 1:36 when you just put one thought into the Browser, you realise that you don’t need it but I almost got it myself so I can’t say much. 5:08 I bust tot used to the light mode in 7 seconds. 7:05 epilepsy warning. Skip to 7:12. 7:13 It’s really bad because it requires you to wear headphones. 8:23 the mini player seems interesting.
Hi, I just wanted to say that the mini player is an interesting feature. But it's not unique to Opera GX whatsoever. Opera GX is a chromium based browser, so it's natural there will be quite a lot of crossover in available features, add-ons, etc.
When you read Eulas telling you information they "collect" it is largely used for features. Such as geolocation MAY be used for their vpn or google maps. I do not know if it is actually used for their vpn, but I assume they use it for google maps.
You don't need geolocation for VPN because it can determine your country and region by your IP adress and also google maps has nothing to do with EULA agreement because it's different company, which doesn't have any agreement with opera about your data. Opera clearly states that they collect that data for themself, thats why when you visit google maps it will still ask you for your geo.
What browser do I use if i don't care about any fancy features and pretty visuals? I literally just want something fast and that eats up the least amount of memory possible.
You're not gonna like this answer, but by far the lightest weight browsers are Edge on Windows and Safari on the Mac--safari in particular is unbelievably lightweight and optimized for Mac users. Honestly, though most browsers are pretty well optimized these days. I would have to advise steering away from chrome--and obviously Opera GX--performance is your main concern. I've had pretty good experience with Firefox recently, and they seem to have made quite a few improvements to memory usage in particular. On the windows, though, I've switched to Brave and it runs well enough, which paired with its security features, makes it a win in my book. I'm not sure how much this comment helped… But I hope it helps some!
I'm a huge fan of firefox personally. I tried it to move away from chrome and it freed up so many resources. It's super simple with no fluff. I'm biased cause I have a vendetta against Microsoft, so I wouldn't recommend Edge and, in my opinion, it feels like it has a lot of bloat when hopping in. When I went to go check it out for this reply, I had to click through like 7 different pages just to start browsing and the home page looks like a mess. If you don't mind that or Microsoft, Edge seems just fine. I unfortunately can't speak for mac, since my only experience with Safari was on my old iPhone 7 and I liked it pretty well when I used my iPhone, so it does have some brownie points.
Tbh, the review is WAYYYY too nitpicky because some people like the small gimmicks, sounds, sidebar, mods, etc. I was a fan of the sidebar because it was such an easy way to see who was streaming on Twitch and to use Spotify. Also, their built-in Ad blocker was hella convenient. However, it does use a lot of memory, which I've noticed when watching TH-cam while playing a game. The whole spying on data is typical. Google and Microsoft do the same thing, and I moved from Chrome to GX because it was just better. Anyway, today I did switch to Firefox and a lot of plugins actually make me feel warm at home (I'll still miss the sidebar tho)

@@bobongleizi5179 I didn't leave Opera cuz it's owned by a chinese government. Literally, I left Google FOR Opera GX. But I left Opera for Firefox literally today because there are plenty of browsers (open source ones) that allows you to protect your data better than these closed sourced ones. Now, I didn't care about my data beforehand, but Opera does use a lot of resources and memory, especially when playing games while a video is playing. I still don't think Opera is that bad because I miss the sidebar that Firefox does not have. But, Firefox isn't bad either and I think prioritizing user experience first is a good thing.

Hey, I personally love the keyboard clicks. I added them to discord. That's how much I like them. It does become annoying if the latency is too high though. But opera does add an ENORMOUS amount of bloat for features that you can find better elsewhere. The claim to fame I suppose is that everything is integrated in one area but like... generally worse.
I'm willing to sell myself for flashy colors and swooshing noses because in my opinion, I'm not worth that much anyway. The way I see it, I'm not losing anything of value. Honestly, same. I'm just some person who has a job, comes home to an empty house, and plays video games or watches youtube. My autistic brain likes the pretty colors and the sounds and swooshy noises ⭐⭐
One of the worst reviews I've seen so far! All you did was say " Why This! Why That! " without explaining anything or giving any other alternative. OperaGX just like most other browsers is customizable, raining down on it because it has default features like sound or widgets etc is just plain ignorance, all of these can be turned on or off at any given time. Personally I like OperaGX because of it's UI and features like the side bar for easy access to WhatsApp/Instagram etc. Next time instead of complaining about the features you think are useless, just make a coherent video explaining why OperaGX is so evil, instead of just saying " oh it's owned by china company aka china bad aka big no no"...
Other than the whole location and company thing, you literally just pointed out that the browser isn’t google. Google, bing, Microsoft edge, none of these have the bookmarks bar ever toggled on by default. GX same thing. “Why does it have all this flashy blocky games on the home page?” Uh well it’s said it’s made for gamers. “Well couldn’t I just see these on steam or a game website instead?” Do you complain seeing them on steam also? Like I’m not dick riding Opra, im not defending Opra, however everything you pointed out (other than the location and company thing) is that it isn’t google or bing. (I don’t use bing so I’m not 100% sure) but those are boring plain old browsers that have been stealing data for years now. Mutahar made videos about them doing it. Opra has some game recommendations, and mini games you could play. If you don’t want them don’t use them, but at least it’s something more than just a white screen with a really long oval and the word GOOGLE over top of it. Not defending Opra once again, just stating that the entire time I watched this you were just pointing out why it has more items on the Home Screen, and settings were blocky and weird, same as Google but boring and bland. It’s like saying “The motorcycle is more dangerous and bad because it has wheels. Cars are better because their wheels are darker.” If you get what I mean.
THANK YOU, I was trying to put my issues with this video into words and its exactly what you said. Guess what, I actually like the sidebar, the customization and the browser sounds, and the native adblock is seriously one of the best I've used, and all that at the same RAM usage rate as Chrome. There's only like 2 features that I miss and that is ALL.
@@biianka26 you’re very welcome, like I don’t have a problem if he critiques it, but have valid critiques at least. Other than the how other government thing being able to steal data, everything else was just same problems Google has, or “it doesn’t look like Google.” Only problems I had with it.
Once b4 i installed my antivirus i entered the optfine page and i was redirected to a download page for opera gx AND IT STARTED FOWNLOADING THE INSTALLER, scariest day of my life, i never ever saw this happening
It wasn't trying to download OperaGX. It was downloading something else and had named the EXE 'operaGXexe'. It's a fairly common tactic, they do it with Firefox and Chrome as well.
@@o_sindico yeah but that isn't opera's fault, those websites have redirected me to TH-cam home page Steam download page Google home page Adobe photoshop purchase page
I did have it at one point thinking it was alright, SINCE it was sponsored by many favorite TH-camrs. But what got me off it is the concern of it taking data as well as just the usage that it requires. I admittedly like the customization stuff with the sounds and even the backgrounds and even the left sidebar. . . But the concern for my information is more important than the customization and there is WAY more options to customize your computer/macOS.
It's frustrating to see so many people in the comments blindly jumping on the hate train for Opera GX just because of this review. Features like keyboard sounds, tab change effects, and the highly customizable design are what make Opera GX stand out. Calling them "useless" feels unfair when browsers like Chrome don't offer anything close to that natively. Sure, performance could be better, but replicating those features on Chrome takes multiple extensions, and even then, it doesn't feel as smooth or built-in. The privacy concerns also keep coming up, especially with Opera's Chinese ownership since 2016. While it’s true that Opera was acquired by a Chinese consortium, the company is still based in Norway and follows strict EU privacy laws, including GDPR. The whole "data sent to China" thing seems exaggerated, and Opera has even addressed this publicly. At the end of the day, people should be critical, but hating on a browser just because of one review while ignoring its genuinely good features feels unfair. It's okay to dislike a browser, but at least be balanced with the criticism instead of dismissing it entirely.
One of the wrost problems i have with Opera GX is for the fact the no matter how i mess with the setting the sound and music don't come off as i expected or planned, until now i'm suffering this problem
I tried everything and I still think GX is the best (for me. don't get triggered). And you are giving your information to all kinds of companies/countries by being existing on the net anyways. If it's not China, it's USA etc.
yeah, think this guy just really doesnt like it for whatever reason, hence his odd criticism of the features that i actually like. it's a perfectly fine browser, and dont act like google doesnt steal your data.
8:15 Waterfox also has the option to pop-out videos, which is basically the only difference I noticed when I moved over to it from Firefox but is enough for me to therefore consider a straight upgrade.

Some people have multiple expansive projects going on. In general just more than 3 tabs open at a time, the sidebar for me is genius, most of its extension features i dont use, cause dedicated Twitter or Messenger or Instagram just works better
But my ability to essentially have multiple browser windows open in a single browser window is a life saver, i have a side bar section dedicated to every streaming service i use and for those without a "My list feature" a tab for every series i wanna watch so i cant forget about them when they are just sitting in a folder in my bookmarks, another for shopping and gifts n stuff, one for general use, and one dedicated to youtube videos that i use for tutorials and the like.
I am a messy broswer user and i found out i have 100+ tabs open, without the ability to segment them i would have 100 tabs in a single tab bar.
And the aesthetics customization is pretty neat, i like that it can play artificial sounds of soft keyboard presses

Dont worry. i had opera gx, uninstalled it and nothing happened

If he wants to make a review he should do valid criticism - like his older video on GX. But complaining about design features (and that was like 8 and a half minutes of his 9:45 video)? Wtf really.

Btw what browser would you recommend to use? Since I kinda wanna switch due to security concerns

The workspaces feature is just gold tho
0:45 the only reason why I could see people use opera GX is because of the performance limiter (use firefox if you need less resource heavy browser) and maybe because of the new stuff page on the front page. The sounds and music and animated wall papers seem like the ultimate distractions. Music has strong psychological effects and you don’t want to mix up work and hobbies like that.

Hi, I just wanted to say that the mini player is an interesting feature. But it's not unique to Opera GX whatsoever. Opera GX is a chromium based browser, so it's natural there will be quite a lot of crossover in available features, add-ons, etc.
@@Bellicosy that was the only other feature where I thought it would be interesting to use it when I saw it.

@@bull_technology What about Librewolf? I've heard its super private/secure and lightweight
I haven't heard of it, but there are many many browsers to choose from out there. I'll check it out though!
@@bull_technology It's like a extremely dumbed down and super private version of Firefox.
Anyway, today I did switch to Firefox and a lot of plugins actually make me feel warm at home (I'll still miss the sidebar tho)
literally every other browser collect the same data, but hey chinese company bad (a private company like google totally won't do anything to your data !!!!!!)

@@bobongleizi5179 if you ignore the fact I mentioned I moved from Chrome to GC then yeah, "ooh Chinese spyware"

Hey, I personally love the keyboard clicks. I added them to discord. That's how much I like them. It does become annoying if the latency is too high though.
But opera does add an ENORMOUS amount of bloat for features that you can find better elsewhere. The claim to fame I suppose is that everything is integrated in one area but like... generally worse.
really good video, but i realised at the end that i dont care enough to change my browser. too much work
I'm willing to sell myself for flashy colors and swooshing noses because in my opinion, I'm not worth that much anyway. The way I see it, I'm not losing anything of value.

Wow, had no idea. I've never used the GX browser but I've used Opera's regular browser for years. Is this true of the normal browser as well?

The only data they got from me... My hentai history🗿(when i still used chrome as my main to read manga!)
I will avoid opera gx and anything related to opera now thanks for the video
And thank you for the comment!
