What's with all the Minecraft Hate Videos?: Toxic Community or Lazy Developer

Unfinished and Imperfect: A Review of Landlord’s Super

Hello everybody and welcome to Bull Technology. Indie games on Steam are about as common as gum on the bottom of schoolroom desks, and sadly most of these games are about as enjoyable as that gum. But for several years I’ve been following the development of one indie game in particular: Landlord’s Super-a quirky construction simulator set in 1980’s Great Britain. The EA App Nightmare: Origin’s Failed “Replacement”

Hello everybody and welcome to Bull Technology. On October 7, 2022, EA launched their new digital distribution platform-known as the EA App-as a replacement for their much hated Origin Launcher. I find the chat reporting fiasco to be both sad and hilarious... When it first came out, everyone hated it, claiming it was the "end of Minecraft" and that it was the worst thing to ever have happened. A youtuber named Xisumavoid made a level headed observation that it would simply blow over and wouldn't be a big deal, and people opposed him in the comments of that video. Low and behold, its been 2 years and people rarely talk about it. Most servers have plugins that disable it, and I legitimately forget that it exists sometimes... People will get mad about it again, but only if you remind them about its existence. Otherwise most people don't even think about it anymore.

    • @bull_technology
      @bull_technology 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Indeed. I was--and still am--against the feature on principle, but it was hardly game "ruining" and indeed the issue has appeared to blow over.

    It is strange how feeling "lonely" is seen as a positive to many classic Minecraft fans. Nostalgia is a bizarre drug. Its also strange to me how people complain about Minecraft changing too much, but immediately say that Minecraft's progression needs to change... Yet people complained when they added Netherite to the progression, replacing Diamond as the strongest material. It feels hypocritical to me, because I'm willing to bet that if they added more progression tiers people would complain that its "too different" from classic Minecraft.

    • @bull_technology
      @bull_technology 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, as stated in the video this is the sort of bind Mojang is in. If they change the game too much, the player base complains that the game has 'lost its identity'. If they don't change the game enough, the player base complains that the game is 'dying' and the devs are lazy.

    Personally, I think the Minecraft Community has gotten pretty spoiled over the years... Like, stop for a moment and put all your biases aside, try to think about things objectively. Minecraft costs 30 dollars (40 if you're buying the Java + Bedrock bundle), that's half the price of your average AAA game, with a sizeable amount of content. We get yearly content updates completely for FREE, while any other game franchise as big as Minecraft would make us pay for DLC. If we don't like new updates, they still allow us to play older versions if we wish to do so. Despite being owned by Miscrosoft, what they give us is extremely generous compared to the usual standard for the gaming industry. I feel we really take that for granted. The Minecraft Developers are not at all lazy... Every update they have a lot of subtle under-the-hood changes to improve the experience, usually in the form of bug fixes and slight performance improvements, as well as giving players plenty of tools to create their own mods, data packs, and resource packs. They are humans after all... They have limits. Ever since the Nether Update, I feel like the standard for updates has been raised too high (because most people don't know that the dev team had a lot of time crunch and overworked themselves in order to make and release the Nether Update on time). The bar has been raised too high, and because the playerbase is _so huge_ there's a LOT of conflicting opinions and viewpoints, leading the a lot of toxicity within the community. People (myself included) have a tendency to get tunnel vision about our opinions and ignore the other side of things a lot. If you look at the mob votes, and think about what its actually like, are we not being unfair? Mojang offers us the choice to choose which mob we want in the game, and we fight amongst ourselves. A lot of people get mad that we can't have all three... Its like if Mojang offered us a choice between three chocolate bars, and we get mad we can't have all three. Sure, they can _technically_ afford three chocolate bars, but that doesn't mean having all three is good for our health (or in this case, the game's health). I think we all need to just chill out, stop expecting so much, and smell the roses. Its a block game. We all love this block game (well, most of us do at least), so can we just appreciate Minecraft and all its given us? Minecraft _is_ changing, EVERYTHING changes. That's part of life. You can fear change, or you can embrace it. I love modern Minecraft. A lot of the more recent changes are my favorite additions to the game. Its in no way perfect, but it shouldn't have to be.

    there is asimple fix for villagers if they want to add it in setting. the only issue i have with microsoft/mojang is they do not have a right to censor your conversations on your private games or servers. sure the game has kids playing it. however if you play online you run the risk of bad and sexual language. the solution to that is a simple parental responsibilty. I paid for a private realms for my familys kids that everyone in the family was invited to play in so the cousin could play together. we did not need minecraft to tell us how to protect our children.

    I agree that Minecraft is still good, but it isn’t perfect, and I honestly think it has strayed a little bit. To bring up an example from one of the videos at least present in your thumbnail (I think, or maybe it was a screenshot somewhere in the video), one good point made in Another Serious Critique of Minecraft is what beds have done to the game. At the start, the night was a constant precence that made itself periodically known and had the normally dreamlike and tranquil landscape suddenly fill up with threats left and right. Minecraft, having perfected the simplified form of building and terraforming for prayers by making its world out of big virtual lego bricks, gave prayers both young and old, new and experienced, skilled and unskilled, both an inevitable problems and a solution with infinite faces. Build a wooden box, a dirt pile, or a mansion if you have the time. Maybe just dig a hole or pillar out of reach. So now you’re in the safe bubble you’ve created, listening to the rattle of bones and shuffling of zombies right outside, surrounded by the fruits of your own creativity pushed to necessity. Of course, you could simply wait out the night. But you’re not playing a game to just sit there, you’re there to create and have fun! So what do you do? What *can* you do? If you’ve built up and have some materials leftover, you could do some work on your base. Pretty it up or maybe just improve the walls. If you’re connected to the ground or a cliff, you can use the empty time to make a mine and gather the next level of resources which can either improve your own abilities or go to the base. That’s up to your priorities and the long-term and short-term objectives you’ve created for yourself. But then came the bed. With the click of a button, the night fades away. The threats suppressed before they appear. You don’t even need a house, you can just place it anywhere. Of course, you’ll probably still build one. But you don’t need to, so for all the more players, it’ll feel unnecessary and like a chore. Creativity isn’t saying a million words without input, it’s the ability to solve a problem by not being suppressed by the rules given to you, but using them for yourself. Necessity doesn’t create creativity, but it does give it an initial push. The first spark that, if it hits the right player, might bloom into a full flame, igniting their passion to create. All from the initial escape from the night. This is my way to word only one off multiple quite good points brought up in that video. Edit/conclusion: Now, without a solution, I’m just a complainer. So what do I propose? Well, while I’m no game designer, I might have an idea or possibly two. For one, the bed shouldn’t skip the night. A better option would be if it simply sped up time a bit. Monster still spawn, things still happen, and it all goes a bit faster because the night still exists. Another thing that could be done is some inspiration taken from Valheim’s comfort system. By having a roof over your head, nearby decorations, a source of heat and all that lovely stuff, you create a more comfortable space to live. Trying this back into the bed, it could make the speed up effect faster or slower depending on the comfort level present. I could even be that it blocks you from using beds outside of a proper shelter. Those are just some ideas, though.

    • @carinaslima
      @carinaslima 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My idea is to make the bed take a bit longer to become day as you are laying on the bed, taking 1 minute. A comfortable house with the essentials makes this faster.

    In my opinion Minecraft's main and most important aspect is building and being creative. Game's worlds are like blank canvases. When you have no idea what to draw on that canvas you just stare at the emptiness. Minecraft isnt that kind of game to get instant fun just by playing it. You have to give your creativity to it to have fun. People that say "Minecraft is not fun anymore" played this game in their childhood and got fascinated with its building features and vast world. They want to experience the same feeling again by starting a survival world but they have no goals to accomplish for that world. So they get bored after a while because they arent a child anymore and playing aimlessly doesnt entertain them now.

    The issue is that minecraft has lost alot of it's vision especially since the adventure update. Now it just feels that alot of the features are just bloat that clutter your inventory. Woodland mansions? Illagers? weird structures and temples just out in the open? Obviously minecraft being a great game, it's hard for these features to ruin it, but it's just a fact that minecraft isn't doing so well. I feel like minecraft deserves better.

    • @carinaslima
      @carinaslima 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This complaint sucks. Yeah, some features are bloat but we have to remember that Minecraft is the bestselling game of all time, it has multiple communities, building, PvE, PvP, technical, redstone, mining, building, minigames… adventure… no item is completely useless, as all these people can disagree or agree in something. Plus, trying to appease all communities in the biggest game, is a hard job. Plus, there are also the lorefinders in every game that see any ruined structure as heaven on earth.

Anvils made it so it’s even more heavily leaned on to maintain and perfect tools, making it that much more of a grind. Add to that mending, a treasure enchantment requiring villager grind and netherite, that much more grinding, and you have a progression system that’s more of a hassle to deal with than it’s really worth. But why does this matter? The new textures turned the blocks into a palette. People don’t really like that because they can’t put it to as much of a good use as they’d like or would be willing to do. The tools make it easier to deal with, but that grind is a slog. A cobblestone castle doesn’t look as good to a player, entirely because of mojang wanting to provide to players who would prefer a much more smooth and muted palette instead of the noisy blocks we had in the past that made simple builds beautiful. It’s more time and more work for the same satisfaction that less players can realistically achieve. Why is the content sometimes too much and sometimes too little? Because players aren’t happy with the core being irrevocably changed. It’s poor game design plain and simple, and it’s a tribalistic mentality to tell players who want what’s best for the game to go play something else if they don’t show 100% support for something you like.

    For the point Minecraft has changed its identity, I actually have a reason to say it actually has. 1.12.2 feels like a complete package when looking back, while 1.13+ has multiple updates thaf overhauled areas of the game. The Nether, Villagers, the Ocean, the Cave Generation... All completely different and/or heavily expanded to a point that it's different in comparison to 1.12.2. Also a lot of visual design feels slightly different in my opinion, I want to say it's a case of a lot more smooth blocks ect but idk. It's not necessarily bad for it to change but it has at least overhauled it's identity to a point that it's almost a new one. And if you aren't a fan of one of the new features, that's gonna cause problems. I'm starting to realize that I'm not a fan of the new terrain generation, specifically for above ground. Its a lot more varies to a point it sometimes feels like I'm fighting it. And while some worlds I had thag issue with in older versions of Minecraft, it's a lot more of an issue post Caves and Cliffs part 2. But that's my opinion, and I haven't been playing as much lately. The last feature I've had interest in was Cherry Trees, and those were the first in what felt like ages I was excited for. It's for me clearly more than burnout. Thansk for reading

      And... thank you for commenting! With every update there will always be people that aren't happy with the changes. As I stated in the video, Minecraft has, is, and will continue to change. I think most people in the community like the new world generation in the Caves and Cliffs update, but it certainly may not be for everyone.

    7:30 I think your assessment isn't helpful at all. The original loneliness of old minecraft played a huge role in how it was played. You would spawn into the world and have 10 minutes to explore, gather, and create your shelter from the night. The darkness that surrounds you plus the inability to sprint away from the mobs made that feeling of fear really important because there were no villages. It was up to you to build your first building. Remember how building a dirt hut was a universal thing players did to survive? Now all you need to do is find a village and steal a bed. That initial fear and the need to build shelter was important because at first it was for survival. But that planted the idea that you really can build anything you want. What was a a dirt and cobble stone hut slowly turns into a miniature castle or a mansion because you not only want to survive in this world, but thrive in it! The villages offer the way to entirely skip this. and with Mojang changing the villager housing to look better than they did, using techniques that a newer player would see but may not know how to replicate... It either turns them away from wanting to build because their house wont be as good. Or they will turn to youtube to copy designs made from other people's creativity. So it's not good for new players who are trying to get in the game because its not envisioning their own creativity by not giving them a way to skip the dangers of night alone. And it's not good for returning players because now they'll steal a bed and then speedrun gathering the materials to build whatever they want, taking many in-game days to do it and sleeping in the unfinished walls before being finished. That or they'll just speedrun getting to the end and getting the elitra. The main problem with all of these examples are with the power that bed bring. They take you away from danger completely.

    I really don’t think anyone in the crew is “lazy” it just slowly lost a lot of its soul because of the Microsoft buy-out, and had to become more and more sanitized over time, most likely to match a more corporate vision. I think the Mojang crew is probably still super talented, the passion was just squeezed out of them over time by weird mandates. I do think the game, unfortunately, got way worse over time. But I really don’t think that’s the fault of the dev team. Notch just sunk em out of spite when he sold the company off to the highest bidder. A real dick move on his end that’s had slow-building consequences. It’s just not enough to say older fans are “nostalgia-blind” when this sentiment has held enough water to form widespread dissatisfaction across the fan base. It may often be misplaced, but the sentiments are still fully crystallized and we can’t just shove our heads in the sand insisting they’re just stupid or crazy for feeling that way- lest we want to behave just like them (or often times worse) in massively writing off a palpable issue in this community.

    I would argue that the added structures add to the game atmosphere. The “lonely atmosphere” made it so that the game had no atmosphere for med because signs of life (ether before or past depending on the setting) are what make worlds interesting in any piece of media. For Minecraft being “boring” now, I’ll admit that this is biased, but I feel like the focus on automated farming and turning the game into a bootleg factorio if anything would be the cause of this to me, and basically having the game play itself.

    • @omarchakrowf
      @omarchakrowf 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree. The reason people feel like the game is “boring” is because people literally, as you said, have the game play itself. Instead of making iron farms, just go find iron! Who knows what you’ll find on the journey. I think that’s what Minecraft is about

    In my opinion, the main reason the Minecraft community has been turning on Mojang these past few years is the increasing bar of what makes a good update nowadays. Back in the old days, updates that only added a couple new blocks and items were seen rather positively, but those types updates would just not be accepted in the modern day. It's because Mojang from 1.13 to 1.18 had an excellent streak of updates where each update is better than the last, meaning anything less than amazing is now seen as mediocre. The direction that 1.19 went in didn't help either. As TheMisterEpic pointed out in his video about Caves and Cliffs, 1.19 sparked the notions such as "Mojang is lazy", "Mojang don't listen to the community", "If mods can do it, why can't Mojang?". And a result, every update ever since has been living in the shadows 1.13-1.18, struggling to see the same success as those updates.

  • @GameJam230
    @GameJam230 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    There's one major problem in the community that causes a lot of the toxicity, and it's that people don't understand what goes into making games, let alone the largest game on the planet. I DO agree that Mojang could be doing more for updates, however I ALSO recognize that their major changes to data-driven items and datapack features are going to make updating the game 100 times easier in the future, as the game is more modular. The thing is, everyone assumes that when an update doesn't have very many features, it must not have as much stuff in it as what modders can do in a week, right? No. That's a stupid argument, because that modder didn't have to go through multiple passes of verifying that the features would fit into the game, they had no responsibility to ensure the quality of the update, prevent crashing, or anything of the sort. They didn't have to do thorough testing on multiple computers within the range of acceptable PCs to play the game, let alone porting it to 2 separate mobile devices (which are DRASTICALLY different to develop for) and 3 separate consoles, and those platforms are in a different language than the 3 PC versions which ALSO have drastically different development processes, APIs, and ecosystems. That dev didn't need to ensure that memory leaks wouldn't occur in specific situations or devices, they didn't need to fix bugs, take community feedback and fix problems, lisence music and art assets, manage a payroll and scheduling for over 600 employees, they didn't have to worry about whether or not features would work the same using keyboard or controller or touchscreen, or almost any of the update development process that isn't directly just thinking of a thing and adding it, which is exactly why the April Fools updates are so big- they do exactly that. When you look at what a modder does as a reason to hate Mojang, you are doing the equivalent of looking at a Thanksgiving Feast and saying "okay well look- Little Timmy ate 3 tiny shreds of turkey, so surely the adults at the table should be able to eat the whole turkey, the whole ham, a giant tub of mashed potatoes, a side salad, stuffing, cranberry sauce, 2 corn on the cob each, and STILL have room for pumpkin pie at the end, all in the same amount of time or less". It isn't the same comparison at all. And before you say "yeah but Mojang has over 600 employees", you need to consider a few things: 1) having more employees means having nore people to manage. If the process of adding a feature requires one specific employee to finsih their job in another area first, then no work moves forward until they do it, possibly wasting the time of 20 other people. Many core systems in games that are used in many areas are the longest parts of actually MAKING the game, because depending how well they're implemented, they can either be the Atlas holding up the Earth, or the pillar of salt to crumble beneath it. This is why bugs implemented by Notch that have been in the game since beta 1.5 lead to exploits like Randar, and exactly why Mojang has spent so much time replacing Notch's buggy core code with newer and more stable code. 2) Look into a computer science problem called Moore's Law. It describes the idea that having more cores in a CPU does not mean it will do everything faster, and there is a physical limit to how much a process and be sped up by adding more. This applies to many real-world subjects including large team management. Too many cooks in the kitchen will spoil the broth if you don't have extremely efficient communication. 3) Not all those 600 employees have the same job. Some are front-end programmers, some back-end, some for Java, some for Bedrock in C++, some are private playtesters, some are on quality assurance and community feedback, some manage socials, some are strictly for concept art, some do official pixel art, some are sound designers, some probably don't even WORK on Minecraft, but rather its spinoff games, some manage the Bedrock marketplace, some handle player reports, but not ONE employee does the job of every other, and CERTAINLY not nearly as well if they did. So while I think people entirely underestimate how much work Mojang has to do, I don't want to leave this as an entirely hopeless message for all the people that DO want to see bigger updates come, and it isn't! Mojang has been developing their datapack tools for a decent while now, and while they might just seem like features for community developers on the surface, they are actually far more important than that. Now that Mojang can add new features like dimensions, biomes, or enchantments to the game without needing to edit the core codebase of the game, developing updates is getting closer and closer to being what modders do. The other reason modding is so much easier than vanilla development which I have yet to explain is that modloaders like Forge modularize the game in such a way that adding new features is practically as easy as if not easier than making datapacks. You don't need to worry about the consequences of editing the game code yourself, because the modloader patches your changes into the game, meaning the only thing that needs to work is the modloader. By Mojang improving on datapacks, they are effectively developing a modloader that will handle the process of patching features into the game dynamically, meaning more of their time can be focussed on adding features for it to patch in. Now I will say, this only applies to Java edition- Bedrock still has a LONG way to go to be looking like that, which is unfortunate because I guarantee you that well over 70% of the update development time is sunk into Bedrock alone, but it's a start.

    Honestly, I don't think they're making the right decisions considering what they focus on during recent updates (like performance, end dimension and overworld ambiance) but Mojang is under no obligation to update Minecraft any further. Since I bought the game over ...12 years ago? I don't even remember... I haven't paid a DIME for this game since then. People are just spoiled. People seem to foget that its s survival sandbox game, not an MMO, Minecraft isn't about it's progression system or even about beating it, beating MC is easy... It's right after beating it that it opens up. If you play MC for beating the enderdragon then you're quite boring. imo.

    Mojang has grown a lot as a company, and I would say that justifies higher expectations. Being okay with Mojang adding lackluster mobs because they'll add to it later is like saying it's ok for Ubisoft to release an unfinished game because they'll patch it later. Of course, Mojang is far better than Ubisoft in every way, but I think it's fair to expect a little more polish for each feature added.

    • @bull_technology
      @bull_technology 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I take issue with that analogy. As you conceded, Mojang is not Ubisoft and nuances is needed. Minecraft has a long history of items and features being added to the game and those items or features changing over time. I vividly recall when enchanting was first added to the game. At the time it was unbalanced and unpolished, but now the enchanting system is much more fleshed out. This is just one example of many. I agree that a larger company justifies higher expectations, but I would argue that Mojang has certainly delivered larger and more feature filled updates. Caves and Cliffs and the Nether Update were two of the largest updates ever added to the game (and both of those updates were pretty darn polished compared to previous updates).

      Mojang’s dev team is surprisingly small at around 50 people, with that being split between Bedrock and Java. Thats not that big of a dev team especially with code as old as Minecraft has
