Comparing this song to Jean Valjean's "Bring him Home" shows the fundamental difference between Valjean and Javert, I think! They are both prayers to God. They both say they will sacrifice something to get what they want. (Valjean saying "Let me die, let him live" and Javert saying "I will never rest") But they want two entirely different things. Javert's actions are all based on justice, while Valjean's are on mercy. If you've read the book, mercy VS justice is a HUGE theme!
Also Monsenieur de Bienvienu shows us the real justice, which means grace, forgivness. Mercy is an act of justice by itself, because Valjean, me or you, all of us have been forgived by the real God, and our mercy and forgiveness to others is a consequence of that and also an act of justice before God and before them. Whom who He forgives sins, will forgive the others as well
this is a very good point but i just want to bring up that javert is explicitly atheist in the book and that god/religion is not one of his motivations for chasing valjean
That's a Big Nope big fat mood. Russell Crowe has this sort of muffled bass that brings a strong realness to how I imagine Javert would sound if he was a real person - not Broadway but gruff and always struggling to keep a seal on his emotions.
@@yunamchill9169 Oh...Finally some companions here! Crowe's Javert is my favorite of all. Me and my brother always argued that the Broadway versions are splendid but...Movie Javert is cold, collected and not in a psychotic way...He almost looks like a angel (In a bad way). Devoid of free will.
@@netomoreira3525 For me, especially in Stars, I love how he doesn't make it sound like a violent promise, but more like a humble prayer, something sweet, because he dedicates it to the stars and how they always guided him. For me, this makes Russell Crow's Stars easily compatible for first place. I just feel so at peace when I hear it.
I don’t really like Crowe’s voice but I liked his acting and think he acted and looked the part well. Even tho his voice isn’t my fave I didn’t think it was as bad as everything seems to think it was. He at least did a better job than Gerard Butler in Phantom.
Ugh, agreed on Russell Crowe. An incredible actor, but his voice isn't suited to this style of music. Also, I agree with Norm Lewis being the best, though IMO, Terrence Mann rates a very close 2nd. Love him!
@@kalirosewood6321I'm going to justify why I, and many others, prefer Lewis. He has an aura that feels alot more like book Javert, whilst being excellent when it comes to the vocals, a great mix between the best part of Crowe's Javert and Quast's, and many love the more deep voice.
I heard this and I’m a well known musical hater with the exception of Hamilton but I had to go watch the whole Les Mis musical from this. Reminds me of when I took a theatre class for laughs and left loving it!!
Philip Quast and Norm Lewis will forever share the title of Best Javert.
Norma Lewis, awesome. What a voice.
Search for hayden tee and earl carpenter
Dieng both of them are great, but I prefer Quast and Lewis
You guys are forgetting how good Russel Crowe was
@@BringHimHome24601 ohhhhhh no we aren’t
Literally no one’s Javert can come close to Norm for me. It’s indescribable. Absolutely astonishing!!!

Wow , very very very good point , and Indeed it's true
LOVE him as Javert. Would like to hear him sing Man of LaMancha--The Impossible Dream.
Ah god I love this so much
😭😭😭😭😭😭🎉 He’s incredible
Easily the best Javert!
I have found my people, Les Miserables AND Danganronpa!?!? I love you.

Le gasp- Not Quast?!
Quast is overrated
Always have to come listen to this and cleanse myself after watching the movie and being subjected to Russell Crowe.
Ahhh he’s just so good I have no wordssssssss
I don’t say this lightly, but BEST Javert
Love this song. 🎶 _By artist most splendidly sung!_ 🎵
I own the DVD and everytime I watch it I invision Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager as Javert.
why?
I love Norm Lewis's portrayal of the character, and Quast did well too. But I also like Russel Crowe's singing, sue me.

LEWIS THE ONLY ONE...BEST JAVERT !!!
Imagine of Norm lewis and colm wilkinson did the confrontation
When he sings "in your multitudes"...
Not sure it was in Toronto mid 90s, cast with Michael Burgess . He was amazing, wish i knew who it was ..... anyone???...
The intro music to "Burn" from Hamilton sounds strangely similar...

I think he should've been chosen to play Javert in the film rather than Russell Crowe
I prefer to like the 10th
10th is good, but Norm Lewis KILLS it. Get the chills every time I hear this
I like both. Don't really know which one is better. Don't really care.
I love both versions
I will admit that I like Quasts better but Lewis does an amazing job as well
