"...My name is Jean Valjean And I am Javert Do not forget my name Do not forget me 24601..." All arrogance and disgust after hearing him speak his name and just call him by THE number. It hurts. So heavy.
I think I like Colm's version of that line better, his Alfie sounds a little too operatic and controlled for my taste, which is only a problem on that exact line, everywhere else it's great
After seeing both stage performances as well as the movie, this is the best rendition in terms of songs. There's just so much emotion behind each one, and you feel it. With the 10th anniversary, it was ok, though some of the performances felt stilted, drawn out, and unnatural. With the movie, it was all over the place with terrible pacing. In many cases, this performance is just great throughout.
Interestingly, Simon Williams (convict 1 soloist) wasn't originally due to sing that line. It was due to be John Owen Jones (Valjean on the international tour at that time). Agreed though, he smashes it!
It was Jonathan Williams, not Simon, who sang the first line, he also understudied JVJ and was alternate to Alfie Bowe in West End. I know this as he is my son.
Yes, I am, but he is in Las Vegas now with Tenors of Rock, been there over 2 years. Look for clips of Jonathan Williams as JVJ in London, I think you will like them!
Just saw Les Mis in Broadway. It was Alfie's last showing (at least for now, he's going to Pan for a while). The concert is just so surreal and awesome. The opening scene is always one of my favorite parts.
@@HaydnG266 You're allowed to like him. There's nothing wrong with that, but most people I've talked to (and myself) find him to be an extremely weak singer as Marius. All personal opinion of course.
Okay, so the Bishop is offically called "Bishop" in the musicals script. I'm trying to read les mis right now, and I've learned his name is Myriel and HOLY FRICK I DON'T NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HIS HOUSE!!! WHY? THE MAIN CHARACTERS HAVEN'T EVEN SHOWN UP YET!
It was Nick Jonas. And I mean he has been in two Les Mis at this point this one as Marius and before this Gavroche. I liked him more than Eddie Redmayne. Don't get me wrong he's a great actor just not a good singer in my opinion.
I really hated Nick Jonas in there. Why his voice doesn't fit is because he has too much of a pop accent. He doesn't have an opera voice. And I am not a great fan of his actual music, which probably creates a link as well. I agree that Eddie isn't the best singer, but I am a bit of a fan of his acting so it was a lot less awkward listening to him.
Vivienn one of my favorite prolouge's next to prolouge from Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet Of 1812 which you should check out btw it's a musical adaptation of War and Peace, a novel that has similar theme's next to Les Miserable!
I will say, Colm will always be the best Valjean, but damn does Alfie come in at a close second. No one can quite hit those high notes like Colm does, but Alfie does more of an operatic voice, where he's able to hit the notes without making his voice more high pitched. Very impressive and he does it very well.
I will Always see Myself in Valjean. I was a mental / spiritual prisoner who got a second chance. On a related note, I prefer edibles over smoking, but that's just me
"but my friend you left so early, sure something slipped your mind." Oh really? what is teach? "You forgot i gave these also, would you leave the best behind?" 2 more detention slips. XDDD
Two.years later you probably don't care, but there was never a soundtrack of this version, just the film. The 25th album is actually the Broadway anniversary and came out later with an entirely different cast.
I believe what is meant is that the prisoner (a male) is suggesting that "She" (his woman/ wife/ lover) will wait (for him to get out of prison) and be true (stay untouched by another man). Of course, he could've said "He" in placement, but that would suggest he was in a homosexual relationship worried for the fidelity of his male lover, which would confuse the setting of the play. Hope this makes sense!
I like to listen to this when I'm doing chores
+Paul Leow Slave
I'm not the only one!!!!!! Hahahaha
+Paul Leow yo slave boy (LOL:) )
I think this plays when you are in detention.

Literally the Overture alone makes this the best musical of all.
"Took..my..FLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!!"
Just awesome.

Jacob Brown I KNOW BEST PART!
Makes you wonder how they caught him so quickly.
@@ireallyhatemakingupnamesfo1758 Alfie is too operatic in the same way that Shakespeare is too literary.
I like both versions by Colm and Alfie because C5 resolves A minor the best

The start always gives me chills! The band are incredible!!

@@xxtdhxx2019 Actually, both are correct. At least in British/Commonwealth English.
can we talk about the first person who sings? It is such a great voice to open the play to!
Interestingly, Simon Williams (convict 1 soloist) wasn't originally due to sing that line. It was due to be John Owen Jones (Valjean on the international tour at that time). Agreed though, he smashes it!
In most les mis production convict number 1 is almost always one of the strongest singers because its planned like that wanna start a good note
It was Jonathan Williams, not Simon, who sang the first line, he also understudied JVJ and was alternate to Alfie Bowe in West End. I know this as he is my son.
@@taznpig123 really????? You must be so proud!

Holy shit I was at that showing too!!
I hear this shit everytime I fire up my lawnmower during Texas summertime.
IT'S HOT AS HELL BELOOOOOW!
I know your pain
Me walking two miles to work in Southern California, not just in the summertime

Dammit bobby
Was there ever a confirmed reason for why there was never an official soundtrack release? It's probably my favorite version of Les Mis.
Also because no one wanted to listen to Nick Jonas as Marius.
@@SomeGunNerd true but ruthless.
@@SomeGunNerd That's not true. He's no Michael Ball, someone I love but he brought something to the role. I quite liked his Empty Chairs cover tbh.

Moments like these make me torn between the 10tg and 25rg anniversary. I love boes "my name is jean valjean" but love quasts "AND I'M JAVERT"
Alfie boe and Philip Quast, that would be my ideal dream Cast, (nothing against Wilkinson or Lewis)
Philip is the ultimate Javert.
AND I'M JAVERT.
downik DO NOT FORGET MY NAME
@@justinbott95 DO NOT FORGET ME, 24601! (Sorry couldn't resist.)
Les Miserables has become my favorite musical. Every moment is so powerful and the messages the story tells are still relevant today.
You know, now that I think about it, I believe that the bishop is the auctioneer from the 25th Anniversary of the Phantom of the Opera.
AbsolX Guardian just skim through the non-action scenes or read summaries. The familiar stuff reads pretty smoothly
I probably never will read the original book because of how descriptive Victor Hugo is. It's too much to read for my leisure time.
Alvurstein Wilhelms I read the whole thing through and it gets way too sidetracked
I think it's because Les Mis is as much Hugo's own philosophy as much as it is an adventure novel.
The Bishop also had like a few nicknames in the book.
My 5 year old loves this song. Philip quast is her favorite Javert though. She loves the way he says and I'm ' JAVERRT! ' 😂
This cast is the all time best cast......maybe with the exception of Joe jonas
It was Nick Jonas. And I mean he has been in two Les Mis at this point this one as Marius and before this Gavroche. I liked him more than Eddie Redmayne. Don't get me wrong he's a great actor just not a good singer in my opinion.
i agree although his voice here i think fits the part...even if it is a bit pitchy.....and also i can never get the brothers names right
Eddie Redmayne had the unfortunate tendency to remind me just a little of Kermit the Frog at inopportune times.
I really hated Nick Jonas in there. Why his voice doesn't fit is because he has too much of a pop accent. He doesn't have an opera voice. And I am not a great fan of his actual music, which probably creates a link as well. who else loves norm Lewis
Came for the Mis, stayed for the norm. He's my favorite Phantom as well. norm is king.
King Triton...
he is the best Javert
@@benjamininnes1437 I like him a lot, but Philip Quast is still the best.
I haven't listened to any cast recordings of LM in years, but it all came back soon as it started

jay Em I’m so annoyed they haven’t released the album for this version
OMG, I listen this again and again! I really love it!
My favourite javert
I saw this on public television.....beautiful production.
best Javert
Definitely the best Javert by far
And I'm, *J A V E R T*
Day= made. Thanks!
This gives me so much serotonin
The new orchestrations are brilliant
Yeah, Fiddler on the Roof, Rent, and Les Miz, are all probably tied for No. 1 in my mind
Earl Carpenter makes a great Bishop. Shame he didn't get a bigger part though
He played Javert in the recent les mis tour in Singapore and he was spectacular!!
Yes, he was magnificent!
He played Javert in Toronto a while ago too and he was the best Javert ever
Sarah Woolley he played Javert in the Asian Tour as well as in Toronto
He's the go-to Javert replacement in most shows
everyone in this song is top notch
beautiful, I can't even tell the phrase which will be enough "good" for this song
Splendid? Magnificent? Heavenly?
ikr omg this is the best song throughout the musical
I enjoy this playlist but what happened to the songs at the end? You stop suddenly at Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. Where is the Wedding? Or Turning?
I swear I hear this every morning when going to work....
that is a good idea Paul . I should do that. And I love Les Miserables.

i’m honestly obsessed with the bishop’s voice
It is in the film, and it is absolutely AMAZING. c:
This is my kind of music :)
A bit fast for my taste (I prefer the 10th Anniversary tempo, more dirge-like), but beautifully sung.
I agree, but I think I like the singing on the non-leads in this one more
This is more of an Opera than a Musical!!!
omfg this was so epic in theaters when they open the movie by showing thousands of men pulling the giant ship of the line into dry dock
Alfie Boe is no doubt the most amazing singer
SO DAMN GOOD!
How come no-one on youtube has the ending of this musical?
Ikr
If the film isn't like this I may have to cry.
Thank uu wish the quality was better
Greatest song i ever heard with...seriously i mean it
If I were Jean Val Jean I would have made a b line for Spain or Italy as soon as I was paroled.
Well I know what I will be listening to today!!
This prologue has the best tempo.
+Bilbo Baggins
In my opinion, both Phantom and Les Mis are on equal terms.
yeah I love Fontaine’s second act
Pleasure to meet you Bilbo!
Is this the one with black Javert?
Yaay!
+Prof. Luigi Black javert LOL
+Prof. Luigi Yeah! His name is Norm Lewis! Look him up, his higher singing is just as incredible as his low register! One of my favorites
