    Today, there are quite a few jobs to do in the allotment vegetable garden. Planting more potatoes and using solar power to cut the grass for two! Then there's sowing perpetual spinach seeds, harvesting nine-star broccoli (a perennial vegetable), and trying a new method for starting carrots that I hear leads to an almost 100% germination rate.

    Would be so beautiful to sit in your beautiful allotment and look toward those hills! That is exactly what I said to myself before you did, "Live and let live." That's so wonderful that you are going to let it be as we all share this planet. 🤗

    Our allotment has badgers, and they love carrots, parsnips and beetroot. The pigeons love spinach/chard/broccoli. Squirrels love corn and strawberries. And everything loves cherries. We have to be masters of the defensive structure. Your plot looks lovely.

    Thank you so much for another educational video Tanya :) As a second-year gardener I find these monthly updates incredibly useful and am gathering many ideas to try. The nine-star broccoli looks fantastic!

    Also a MASSIVE thank you to my friend, Liz Zorab for introducing me to EcoFlow. She's using their solar panels and portable power station too as you can see here: th-cam.com/video/FQ_gnIGC93U/w-d-xo.html

    I used news paper over my carrots for the first time this year. Keep it moist and after a week check it every other day until germination starts. It worked great! As you said. This could work with other seed as well. Get a trail cam and place it near the burrow to discover its inhabitant. Neil in Oregon

    Putting boards down is also a useful way to catch slugs. Slugs can take a whole row of newly germinated carrots before you know that they have germinates.

    I can visualise how an eco flow could help people in countries like Nepal, far more than those of us with functioning electricity available all year. But yes for outdoor situations even in countries like ours where no electricity connection it would be very useful though not trekking only camping at a campsite. For me if I had one I could get a little garden shed I could certainly benefit from one to make my soap products.

    Everything is looking so lush at the allotment, Tanya. Solar panel is very interesting. Relative to the rats…..I saw a video several months ago where a man had something eating all his vegetables at night. He set up a camera to find out what it was. Rats. He eliminated them by putting out a mixture of 1:1 white flour and baking soda. Eliminated the rats. Some people commented that they mix with water and make little balls. Some added peanut butter as well. He simply put it in a plastic cottage cheese container and cut a hole big enough for the rats to put their head in and set it on its side so it wouldn’t get wet. Nothing to contaminate the crops. Just wanted to share that with you.

    Looking at the prices of some of these kits, I have just paid more to have the weather-proofing on the flat-roof of my house done! Thinking of how much money I could save by using one of these to power the appliances around my house instead of paying the burgeoning costs of my electricity bills (set to go up MORE before the end of the year, where I am, too!) really makes me want one of these systems!

    I use a board and or a large piece of wood but I prop it up a bit with bricks or wood pieces to keep it slightly off the ground and it keeps the ground moist and usually get carrots in about 5 days.

    Aaaaaargh, first Liz, now you - I may have to get an Ecoflow system after all... Have been a bit hesitant because of the upfront cost, tbh. But with rising energy costs, it's beginning to make sense.

  • @paul-oram

    Great movie - loads of handy info - and i have been wondering when is there going to be an easy moderately priced green energy solution available so this Ecoflow is perfect. I went to the the site straight away, the mini was sold out! Is this because of you!! ;-) So anyway im on the mailing list, the sunniest bit of my garden is on the shed roof, so I would just place the solar panels there and use all the energy in my garden workshop. Thank you for enlightening me!

    Here in Florida we get lots (expect lots more this year) hurricanes and resulting electric outages. Most needed are freezer and refrigerator, fans, lights. We could cook outside but having coffee in AM, oh yeah, alarm clocks, would make life better. I know that camera overheat during filming in the summer but would heat have anything to do with this, also?

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Such good uses for it...freezer/fridge absolutely here too! I'm not entirely sure about the unit overheating due to heat. Electronic anything doesn't seem to play well in hot direct sun tho?

  • @duncanrobinson3200
    @duncanrobinson3200 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I might look into the solar power solution, my electricity bill has gone up a lot lately and anything that will reduce it in the long term is worth considering.

    Bring along a small refrigerator for camping . Don't need to keep buying ice for the cooler. Charging phones while camping. Portable electric burner instead of buying propane. Any electronic device. Ever thought of bringing a toaster or coffee maker for camping? Why burn wood for heat? I know, I know. Gotta grill something. This is the first time I heard about portable panels. Great video. Very informative.

    Solar panels or power is wonderful. My concern is the environmental impact of there manufacturing and disposal.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The disposal is the same process as for any other lithium battery. I checked beforehand and am satisfied with both product's environmental standards :)

      As in it dies down over winter and regrows?

    • @juliemcgugan1244
      @juliemcgugan1244 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only had mine for one year, but it did indeed die down over summer (45 deg C!) and again over winter (only down to 1 deg C, but colder than usual for us; coldest winter in more than 15 years,) then sprout again this Spring.

  • @justinburch
    @justinburch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Those powerpacks are indeed wonderful. I have one myself. However it is not correct to say the electricity is free. You have to pay for the unit itself and it has its own environmental cost, a huge cost in destruction for mine the minerals, especially the lithium, used in their production. Also the unit does not have unlimited life span. In about 10 years or 800 charges it will fail and need replacing. The solar panel will last about 20 years and need replacing. So yes they are wonderful but they are not free and they are not more environmentally gentle than other methods of getting power, especially if you don't consider carbon dioxide to be a pollution. Other than that I very much enjoyed your vlog. I am going to be planting basssicas for the first time this year, as an experiment, so I was delighted to be able to learn from you. Thank you.
