Late Winter Seed Starting for the Vegetable Garden

- Seed starting begins for me in January with just a few types of vegetables. Then in February, I can sow much more! Leafy greens, brassicas, radishes, and herbs. This is my late winter seed starting set-up and seed sowing techniques including a heated propagator, grow lights, and mixing my own seed starting mix. I also introduce you to some of the earliest seeds to sow.

I agree that there is something special about cleaning the green house at the beginning of the year. It gives you a feeling of anticipation for the growing year ahead. New growing year, new life.

Gosh when I started watching, I thought boy the greenhouse looks really great, then 5 seconds later you're saying you have to clean it. So far I've only started flowers, my last frost is April 6, starting veg the coming weekend. Looking forward to seeing your entire garden come together this year, seems this property was really meant for you guys.

Definitely agree, many schools of thoughts on the topic of the right seed starting soil🌱
There are lots of opinions and lots of choices. When it comes down to it though, seeds WANT to grow :) They'll sprout if you put them on a wet paper towel so anyone's choice of potting mix will likely do the job 💚

Yes I totally agree, the seeds have all the nutrition it needs UNTIL it germinates. That cocoa coir is totally right on-time as many move away from peat-based mediums. Thanks for sharing!

This was a super video and helped clarify a lot for me as a new garden keeper 😍 Last year I sowed a little meadow. This year I plan to turn over the soil, sow from the seeds I collected last year and also build 2 beds and try some vegetables/herbs. I live in Denmark and believe it is area 8a/b. I will begin the whole thing very soon. We will have frost the next 10 nights at least 🙏 I am very happy to follow you and your awesome videos, thank you 🌷🙏😃

The greenhouse looks so inviting! I would love the climate there! Our last frost date is end of May. So I have to wait on most things to start. So looking forward to getting my hands in the soil! I look forward to every video you do. I'm also enjoying your book.
try LED grow lights. I use a 6inx48in LED grow light full spectrum in my greenhouse over propagation table and a 36inx36in LED grow light full spectrum inside grow station that easily floods light over a 42inx42in grow area where I can start six 10x20 grower trays - NO HEAT is produced and the full spectrum is blue yellow and red which is beneficial for all growth stages, even germinating light dependent seeds. The cost is minimal nothing like florescent grow tubes. Just a suggestion. Also grow zones indicate frost free growing days and do not relate to ambient temperature. That's how your area can be cloudy and cool unlike the sunny warmer weather of Florida. But each have the same frost free days.

Great helpful video. Figuring out Zones in the UK I find tricky. I live in Chester UK so would have thought I was similar to you but the site I use for calculating reckons 2nd week in May is estimated last frost. I think I am roughly in Zone 8! You just get to know your region with experience. I start the bulk of my seeds in a cold greenhouse with the help of a propagator and plant out in mid-May. Runner beans and sweetcorn can go out in June most times. Hoping to start sowing in earnest in mid-March. Can’t wait!

My husband and I just moved to the island and we're currently in a rental, so I'll probably do some basic Veg pot plants this year. I think I'll start saving my milk carton bottoms for the window sills for starting the seeds. 😇

Cold in Chicagoland. Started leeks, shallots and red onion seeds. Plopped a sweet potato on soil and hope to get slips (first time trying slips). Otherwise I put spinach seeds in the over the earth cold frame. April 1st is when I erect my zipper greenhouses and get lots of spring stuff going.
I’ll definitely check out your other video! I’m going to start a journal like yours this year to track my garden’s progress! That data is so valuable to future success. I’m loving your videos! My last frost date is March 28th, so we are on a similar schedule ☺️
I feel so secure having that little black book telling me what to sow and when! 😂💚 YES, the information is extremely valuable. We can forget so much each year and actually writing it down helps to avoid mistakes and continue successes!

What a great video! Do you mind telling me where you got your greenhouse? I am a flower farmer in the southeastern US (North Carolina), and I also grow fruits and veggies. I would love to have a greenhouse some day, and yours is similar to what I am hoping for. Also, I would love to see your polytunnel whenever it is finished! As far as what I have started indoors under grow lights, my seedlings that are currently hardening off are scabiosa, statice, salvia, sweet peas, and feverfew. I'm also growing crocus, nacissus, hyacinths, tulips, pansies, dahlias. ranunculus, anemones, bells of Ireland, nigella, ageratum, coneflowers, bachelors buttons, and many other flowers. We grow a lot of greens, cabbages, lettuces, beets, and other veggies, as well as blueberries, apples, pears, blackberries, and peaches. I've done all of that without a greenhouse, but having one sure would be nice!

We live in the High Desert part of Oregon where our temps fluctuate throughout the Spring and Summer . It’s hard to have a definite last Frost date . Usually it’s safe to plant out the very end of May , however we have to watch throughout the Summer season for drops in nighttime temperatures and be prepared to cover . This makes sowing seeds indoors a challenge of “ trowel and error “ each year . Am I too late to start onions from seed ? I’ve heard January is the month to start them , but I missed that date . I love your videos , and your practical, sweet, teaching style ! You are a blessing!!
Thanks so much BobbiLynn :) What a challenging place to garden you have there too! It's getting late for onion seeds but if you sow them now, you should be alright. Typically you want to sow them between December and mid-February.

What do you think about perlite? Can it be substituted for vermiculite?
I have a sunflower in a one gallon pot. Will it flower as a small sunflower? Or will it just vegetate until I put it outside?(in the ground)

Do you have another quick, easy way out to your deck/patio? I see that you have your seed rack in front of the door. Can definitely tell where your priories lie. 😂

You ever notice that most USA youtubers don't give temperatures in Celsius. They just throw out a number and don't even say wither it's Celsius or Fahrenheit!
So why do people who run on the Celsius scale feel the need to make sure the viewer knows?
When you start talking growing plants at 10 degrees, any gardener would know you are talking Celsius. They can do their own conversion.
