      They are SUCH an important player in the garden/ecosystem. We just need to understand them a bit more...and make space for them when/if we can.

      @@Lovelygreens in recent years we too have learned to appreciate wasps. I was interested to hear that wasps tend to not build a new nest near where an old one already exists. Looking back over the years, that does indeed seem to be a pattern - I can't recall ever seeing a new active nest close to an old one.
      I'll be sure to leave both old and current wasp nests alone when I find them near the places we walk through most often. I'd prefer not to disturb them, but I would also prefer they set up their homes a little more off our most used paths in future. There are still lots of other suitable places on our place for wasps to build nests, where we won't bother them and they can be safe and do their important work.

    It seems to be the year for wasps. I have a nest in both of my sheds. They guarded the nests to start with but now don't mind me getting tools out of them. I wonder if they have got to know who I am and realise I'm no danger to them.
    I'd like to see how your bees are doing. It's something I've contemplated keeping.

    I visited your channel when you moved into your new property and now so much has changed 👍 You've achieved a lot 👏 The aubergines look so beautiful 🤗 Last year we wanted to build a new greenhouse but when we started digging we realized that there was a bumblebee nest so we stopped the project. Like wasps they don't use the same nest again. We decided to be patient.

    Would love to know more about your bees: I have bought a hive, found a breeder that I want to get my bees from (focus is on them being peaceful), in the process of following a VERY thorough online course, and on the side I have an experienced beekeeper that can come to my rescue, if needed. Now I just need to muster the courage to actually get started

    It's lucky in a way that the wasps have made their nest on the polycrub rather than another structure, such as the shed or house- you can see the fascinating internal structure of the nest through the translucent plastic. I hope they continue to be peaceful neighbours to you!

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Isn't that something? It's incredible to think that it's all a kind of paper that they make from wood! I hope they remain peaceful too -- I'm going to start using the back entrance for most of my access though just to play it safe.

    Our son nearly died through wasps stings, he accidentally disturbed a wasps nest whilst clearing a building site with an open sided digger. One stung him and the rest then attacked him, his only escape was to run the length of the building site and get into his van, the wasps followed him attacking him as he ran, also attacked his van. End result he finished up in hospital was then transferred to another hospital with multiple wasp stings upon wasp stings all over his body and head. He had an extremely bad reaction and it was only the quick thinking medical staff who first saw him, which prevented him going into Anaphylactic shock. So be very careful that you don’t accidentally disturb the nest.

    Everything is looking wonderful, you've managed so much in a short amount of time! I didn't realise you were supposed to leave elephant garlic for two years, I always plant mine in October with the garlic and harvest it in July, it's always split into cloves though not one giant bulb. Having the same issue with catnip, between my 3 and the neighbours 2 they've trashed 4 plants this year! Normally it can keep up with their chomping but they found it just as it was coming out of dormancy so the poor things never had chance ;)

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the length of the growing season that can help those cloves split the first year. Mine never seem to want to divide up so I leave them in for a second...works a treat :) Catnip...I think the only way you could grow it unprotected is if you had a cat-disliking dog! Even then, I'm sure it would get rolled around in at night 😹

      Where I am in north Idaho we don’t have the drought and heat this year , it’s been extra rainy and cold. At 10:18 am Monday morning we are 49 degrees and raining. Supposedly 🤞in a few days we are supposed to be getting warmer weather. But yes, I set out water for the wildlife when it’s hot and dry and am planning some new options this year. I have hopes to get in my project list tall herb garden with the pond at the bottom that you have shown us how to make. Have a fabulous week, TeresaSue.

    Your video is brilliant. Our ‘gardening area is very small. At the front of our house there are containers filled with flowers. At the back there are lots containers again filled with flower but I will not be putting flowers in but veg will replace. All my containers are filled with compost from the garden centre. Once I’ve removed the all flowers and the roots, is it ok to use the old compost.

    Your polycrub is looking just great. I have longed for a polycrub for some time now and finally it’s happening and the build has started. I watched your earlier video on the construction of your raised beds with great interest as this will be my next project. Can I ask what width your beds are? I plan to have a similar layout of a bed down each side and maybe a slightly wider centre bed. Not as long in length as I have a 6m p opycrub. Did you leave path width for a wheelbarrow?Your plants are looking very happy and healthy in their new home. Please be very careful of that wasp nest near the end of the summer as they become very irritable when close to dying. I know from bitter experience when they set up next to my beehives.

      If you mean the raised beds in the polycrub, I go through that here: th-cam.com/video/iXAI5IE6RlA/w-d-xo.html

    Wasps attack bees, so I'm wondering if you get bees coming in to pollinate your plants?

      Its been on my mind too. I've seen a few bumblebees inside and other insects. No honeybees though yet. The chilis are growing and that's a good sign

      @@Lovelygreens perhaps chillies are just as tomatoes self pollinating? Perhaps they only need the wind? It also could be that other insects are pollinating them. Flies are pollinators 2 but honey bees are the best.

    Maggie is hilarious. I'm sure she thinks she is your bodyguard 😂

    I know you won’t see this but why not plant Maggie’s catnip on lowest level of Greenstalk? She can enjoy without causing mayhem.

      I had it on the top level last year, and it worked a treat. I'm not sure I'm going to continue using GreenStalk, though... I'm still thinking about it, but it's just not a very attractive planter 🙈

    I would have removed that nest before it got that big. Wasps can be very dangerous and the slightest thing will set them off. As their food sources dwindle they will start to eat on your fruit and they will become more aggressive.

    I'm not impressed with green stock, I wish they would make the containers a bit bigger. Right now their containers are too small to grow anything meaningful. I love your gardens. Congrats!

    that's not wasp, that's hornets.

    • @Lovelygreens

      They're called Median wasps -- I had an ID from a wildlife expert

  • @none-ya-dam821
    @none-ya-dam821 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    They eat caterpillars too. So you won’t have any butterflies in your garden.

    • @Lovelygreens

      Certain caterpillars, and if that means fewer white cabbage butterflies then I'm okay with that :) They also predate on hornworms, a bane of many a North American tomato grower. But in the end their predation is part of a natural system that they belong to. We humans shouldn't interfere with that too much.

    We leave all our wasps alone. They go about their business and co exist. The Earth needs all the pollinators it can get.

    but i don't know why you in America you build a wood wall !? why not a concrete one forever, and it'll be stronger. also your raised bed.. just tell me why you prefer wood !?
