It feels so strange watching, and knowing, the correct times for seed sowing in the UK latitude when compared to the correct times here in Thailand. I am currently harvesting carrots, Courgettes, tomatoes, kale, beetroot and sugar peas, which were sown in November and December 😅😅😅My "Thailand no dig" beds are going from strength to strength. Thanks for posting Charles.

@@CharlesDowding1nodig Are you sure you need to cram the cell Charles? Are you sure more soil is better? I'm wondering if volume space for the Roots is most important. If you keep cells light and fluffy the roots can move and grow unrestricted......I've just tried this and it seems to work 👍

Funny, a couple of years back I watched all your videos and compiled every sowing and planting dates you mentioned and created myself a plan based on your dates adapting them to our climate by using the reasoning more than the dates themselves. I think that is the key to learn from your experience. And that is the difference between your videos and everyone else’s. You focus on the why, most people just dictate their dates…

This was a great video ❤ I understand you’re referring mostly to your planting zone but I must say I laughed out loud when you said garlic could be planted as late as February as we got 4 inches of snow today and both the ground and my compost bins are frozen solid 🥶 Every year I’m amazed when my little garlic and shallot shoots make it through our pretty brutal winters (northeastern USA) My grow room is sure active right now though… thank heavens for heat mats! Thank you for all the time and energy you put into your videos Charles they are such a delight and so incredibly helpful, you’ve truly changed gardening for me in the best of ways!! ❤

Dear Charles, this is one of the most condensed informative videos I have seen so far on the topic of sowing. I did have my sowing dates fixed already for this year but watching this video I layed my personal sowing calender next to me to compare. I made some corrections and with other dates it felt reassuring that you suggested similar ones - and getting the reasoning behind it, even confirming some of my own observations made this even more valuable. This was so much good information in one video! This is the first time I used the "Thanks" option of TH-cam but it felt very much appropriate. Thank you!

Watching it and noticing how the time goes by I wondered if you ever go on any holiday and if yes when do you go? I've watched and enjoyed all your videos since I got into veg growing a few year ago, but this one was particularly useful. Like most enthusiastic veg growers, I have no trouble getting started with the early crops and have various types of row covers to even push the boundaries a bit. However, where I tend to struggle is with the later sowing at times, when there's so much already going in the garden. I know already that I'll be coming back to this video. I have 2 "gardens" in Switzerland one on a 3rd floor terrace with around 20 M2 of raised beds/pots, last frost date 11-20 April and a bigger open soil garden at 1000 meters, with a last frost date 21-31 May.

Please consider doing a short video on the long term results of no-dig gardening practices on soil health and composition into the soil horizons. I love the yield comparisons between the dig and no-dig garden plots, but is there a substantial difference in soil health? Can you show a sample of native soil in that area versus the soil you have been adding compost materials to for a decade? Thanks for all you show and teach us!

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig

Hi Christina , I live just a few miles down the road from Mr Dowding and have made visits to both his gardens . As MANY other people have already said the first thing you notice on entering the garden is how amazingly healthy all the plants look . I have not made a scientific study of this topic and am not sure quite how one defines a healthy soil or measures soil health, but all I can say is that plants obviously love this method of cultivation

Years ago when I started growing I tried your dates and few of them worked for me. I finally realised after watching a lot of your videos that you grow in full sun, I like so many others grow in partial sun or light shade and that makes a big difference. I’m always surprised that you don’t mention this. Now I’ve realised that there’s so much opportunity to go beyond your suggested dates for a much richer diet and much greater yields. That said as a start point your dates are very valuable

Cheers Steve, yes they are a start point. Thanks for your suggestion

@@CharlesDowding1nodig I also enjoyed watching that, thanks for doing it. As per the chap above, have you ever done (or thought about) doing a test and article on growing certain veg in types of shade? I'm lucky in that my garden is South facing, but many peoples isn't. I have a shaded area up against my Polytunnel and am going to have a go with certain veggies (i've researched) this year to see how well they'll do.

18:20 - Thank you so much. I had never thought to plant Chinese cabbage in August. I will definitely give that a try this year. Funny thing is, I just sowed Chinese cabbage seeds yesterday for summer harvest.... 🙂
14:15 - I have sown Swiss Chard as early as March 5th, specifically to get them to bolt that year for seeds. Total failure. They always take for me 18 months to flower. To me, where I live, they are almost a perennial. But when they bolt and seed, I get a bucket load of seeds. Side note: 12 month old Swiss Chard root, just before they bolt, is not only very tasty but due to is ring pattern also lovely looking in a salad.... And no, mine is not woody.🙂

Your calendar is brilliant, and I love this year's addition of continued sowing opportunities. I think it would be great if you kept that but also made it visually clear which sowings are *new* and which are 'repeat opportunities', if you know what I mean. You can sow broad beans nine times, but maybe embolden the first sowing opportunity? I wade through the lists of sowings (which are very helpful) looking for the new ones amongst the sowings I've already done.
But love it. Loved attending your course last year, love everything you do. Many thanks!

Thank you Charles for another excellent informative video. It certainly compliments your 2023 calendar. This year's calendar is a slight improvement on the 2022 version. By the sounds of it, 2024 calendar will be even better.

Thank you Charles for another helpfull video - just want to say that for those of us down under it is very helpfull when you refer to the season rather than the month. I bought your calender in 2021 thinking that I would be able to translate it easily, but I must admit - it didn't really work.

I echo your sentiments, and for that reason we created the southern hemisphere sowing guide. This link is for the 2024 version and soon we shall publish for 2025. It should be useful for you through spring. drive.google.com/file/d/13BMOD2sw2wc5pnqEY3PkJBEkV7U1_evd/view

My goodness Charles I’m going to have to watch this several times and make notes. There’s a few mistakes I’ve already made! Never mind. Plenty of time. Crazy weather here in West Norfolk. -5c today with 40mph winds and heavy snow. 12c on Sunday!
Thank you very much for sharing. Pat Joyce
