John isn’t being sarcastic, witty or smart. He’s just shocked.
Yeah, shocked.
Shocked.
And stunned.
Yeah, stunned.
Very stunned.

Yeah he really was, for a second I thought he was just on drugs.
You know there's something wrong when George is main speaker
Oh yes, George is normally pretty quiet in interviews
On that day, a large crack appeared in the foundation of the Beatles that was impossible to fix.
absolutely LMAO when i read this ! beyond true !
👌 I wish we all can expose this secret about Paul McCartney dead.. Do u think they will allow this when they're minting money still 🕵️♀️

Winter Soul lennon was in complete shock and bewilderment during this interview
Yeah, he's also probably high to escape feelings.
You can really see the humanity in his eyes when he's speaking and then looking away.

Looks more like high/tripping than in shock but who knows
Poor John is just lost here..
and on a strong sedative....can't even speak

It's got nothing to do with any sedative. That's the face of a man who already met death before.

George being John's support is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen
George had played this role before. When John's close friend Stu Sutcliffe died, George was there. Stu' girlfriend saw George as John's protector at that moment and took a picture. i.redd.it/ch4sei34v0z41.jpg
Me too. I’ve always felt that that friendship gets short shrift because of the Lennon/McCartney juggernaut.
Idolotry....of 2 dead people! :)
Cynthia wrote that they always had a close and fun friendship or words to that effect. The photo that Astrid took is very moving.
When John and Paul weren't ignoring George, they were talking down to him. That was the case for most of The Beatles career. Paul has copped to it in recent years, as one of his biggest personal failures.
George being a big help here for John. 👍
True. Actually I find it interesting it was John and especially George who talked to the press and not Paul for example.
Just like he did when John lost his mate Stu in Hamburg.

1:15 John just takes a deep breath..poor Johnny looks so upset
Yes :(
At least they are reunited now
His body language explains it
George is all class
John looked so much like a scared, lost boy. First and only time I saw him like this in interviews. George was being a bro coming to his rescue.
George and John’s relationship was so strong , George could speak miles without John saying a peep
john is so serious in this interview
Paulo Vitor everyone was serious. He loses the oficial fifth Beatle
serious !!he is a zombie..he thought the Beatles were over !! and obviously on a sedative..listen to him speak
Paulo Vitor he’s in shock
Devastated. He may know it is the end without Brian Epstein. He made it happen for them.
Of course he's serious, he just lost a dear friend.
Olivia once said that George was "no panic" type person...he was always calm, always...no matter what. Here, if you watch carefully, you will see that John is completely shocked and lost in bewilderment, whereas George is somehow still calm..he was definitely shocked and sad but he was calm...he stepped in and answered all the questions... Ringo was actually standing next to him... George may had been the youngest Beatle and labeled the Quiet one but he was matured enough to handle a situation when it needed him..he was always protective of his mates...❤️
Yes, George had a calm center that came to the fore in difficult times. I know that he could be blunt sometimes (as in interviews with people like Dick Cavett) but my sense is that he looked at situations in life as passing clouds. Nothing to get stuck on.
God...I'm not a big fan of John as a person, but it's awful to see him look so shocked and upset here. The question "Where would you be today without Mr. Epstein?" was an invitation to produce a nice little soundbite about how much Brian did for the band and what a great friend he was. For John - usually so quick with words - to simply say 'I don't know', and leave the 'quiet' Beatle to do all the talking, is heartbreaking.
ddjdd wfgggb calm down man. ☮️
nice perception, its so strange to see john acting like this. george steps up and solves the problem
I think George wasn't as close to Epstein as John was, so it may not have affected him as deeply.
Same here.
@ddjdd wfgggb Knew him, did you?
...oh, wait; you're really a 12-year-old just causing trouble online, aren't you?
John looks like a deer in the headlights. George has so much protection in his eyes for John here and takes the lead on purpose. John had such a tragic childhood and couldn’t cope with anything ever. The Beatles truly were brothers.
Where is "brother" Paul??

John's shock is also understandable when you remember that he lost his mother at a very young age, then his best friend, Stu Sutcliffe, right when the Beatles started their career, and now, completely by surprise, the man who allowed all their story to happen. That's a lot to carry. So difficult to watch…
Also Mimi's husband George who played the roll of John's Dad.
Was just about to mention his Uncle George. This is hard to watch. That's pure shock. You can tell by the reaction here what Brian must have meant to him. He had a rough, cruel and unfair life did John Lennon. George is such a lovely bloke. I could listen to him all day. He's only 24 here too. They seem miles ahead of thier years
One one of my walks, found Uncle George's grave in St Peters the other day. Not far away is a grave stone with the name Eleanor Rigby.
Every adult male figure seemed to die beginning when John was a child up to this point. John believed that he was some kind of jinx that's what he told Paul way before the passing of Brian Epstein. Here it looks like he's grieving he's also in shock and he could be thinking about that he could diffently be a jinx.
When John's mother died he could not look at her body. He buried his face in his Aunt Mimi's lap at the funeral and could not stop sobbing. Then, when his friend Stu Sutcliffe died, he could not stop crying for a week straight. His brain was likely affected from living in a constant state of emotional trauma as a child, likely leading to a textbook case of Borderline Personality Disorder. It is insane to think about all he accomplished in spite of this.
He did experience so much loss in his family too and uncle George was johns father as well as uncle to him I think.
This is very heartbreaking, they look so lost. It is crazy to think how young George was here, not even 25 years old. He always had this grounded and deep quality regardless of age, he was there for John at Stuart’s tragic death back in Hamburg too. These two’s bond is often overlooked but was very special and beautiful. Truly a beautiful, classy soul. R.I.P to all.
I've seen endless films on the Beatles and I have never seen John Lennon so meek, utterly stunned and on the brink of tears.
Poor John. He and Epstein had a really special relationship. Some claim it was even romantic, but either way, Brian was a guiding force and friend to all the Beatles who carried them out of Liverpool and into the home of every family on the planet. It’s no wonder John seemed so shellshocked.
Abv21 06 there was no fuckin romance!
I think John needed that direction.
DAVID MATHEWS/The Minerals get your head out of your ass
The story is that John had sex with Brian in Spain because he wanted to know what it felt like to have sex with a guy and i believe it.
@@markspel John said himself nothing ever happened between them.
John later was angry that the Maharishi made light of Brian's death. John said he didn't have a chance to really mourn, and called Maharishi in later years an idiot.
*Fuckin idiot" was the direct phrase!
It was also anger towards Paul’s parent like attitude like “come on guys let’s go back to the studio. What’s happened happened” and that mentality. It was not the best state to write an album let alone a double album...
What did the Maharishi say?
@@MrJoeybabe25 He just said, "be happy!" "It happened, Don't dwell on it!" Like it was no big deal. I am definitely forgetting a few big factors. Too tired to remember atm
He's said that about pretty much everything and everyone at what point or another. He'd curse his own mother and rock and roll and the next day swear his undying love, that's John. Best to not take his words in anger as gospel.
It’s so weird to see John like that. He’s literally in shock

What great bandmates. John’s state of shock is pretty clear, and you can see George senses it (as he must have also known John and Brian’s particularly close relationship) and is picking his brother up when he needs it.
Awww,I absolutely love Georgie here. He is so protective of John. He answers all of the questions.❤️❤️
Honestly, if Brian never died, i think The beatles wouldnt have broken up in 1970.
I would agree but so many things happened before Brian died
Totally!! Plus Brian would’ve handled Apple’s finances much better than The Beatles themselves and there would be no need to hire Allen Klein!!!!
@@Truefredking2 Yeah, that was because Brian was the manager. After 67 it went downhill because of his death, but they still released great music
@@WinkDaMan07 That shows how important Brian actually was for their success
Really? I've read somewhere that one reason for Brian's massive drug abuse was his dimished importance for the band. Maybe they would have fired him? I think his contract wasn't extended before his death?
At 2:10 John is literally holding back his tears
Omg I just want to hug him
Same
Brian was the type of manager who truly wanted what was best for the band. A genuine man who built meaningful relationships with artists.
Exactly! Brian was the kind of manager who didn't care about money or wasn't trying to exploit his music artists' talent. We need those kind of managers in today's modern day and age.
John Lennon's reaction to Brian Epstein's death was the same as mine was to John Lennon's death! Shock, bewilderment and disbelief.
George was a really beautiful man...he could _feel_ John's bewilderment and pain, so he stepped in to ease his burden. 💜
John lost so many people in his life so its heartwarming to see George being his support here
George taking lead reminds me of a photo taken by Astrid Kirchherr of George and John after Stuart Sutcliffe's death. George is standing looking strong, and John is sitting looking vulnerable.
You can just see that John is absolutely shattered 😢 That deep sigh he emits soon after definitely punctuates that sadness and its hard to watch. Biggest of ups to George for stepping in and carrying the load for John there too 🕊️
Stunning piece of film, John's looking completely stunned, his eyes, all the words, George...🙏 Just incredible moment
The first time John Lennon was serious during an interview. He looked so shocked.
John looks and acts so awfully shellshocked and broken, and George just sounds a few feet away from tears and keeps biting his cheek, and just... God, I’m so sorry for them. I’m so sorry for Brian. :’(
Lennon is quite literally in a state of total shock and the media I just wish gave him (and the group) some time and space here to grieve and process the entire situation. He's totally in a daze on the verge of breaking down. Just heartbreaking how he repeats "yes....yes"
It’s actually upsetting to see John so unhappy and so unenthusiastic. You can really tell that Brian’s death affected him significantly.
lennon's authenticity just shining through here. that first response is just brilliant when you think about it. i always thought he could have carried on that sentence with: "...where would you be? you wouldn't be here bothering me while i'm trying to take in the death of my friend, would you fuckface?".
pipeandslippersman but not in this case. John was very responsive to the question. I'm sure though the reality of their manager was very surreal
Yeah, John is genuinely experiencing shock here. He was somewhere else and doing his absolute best to maintain composure but he was definitely lost.
Today marks 52 years since Brian Epstein died.
Rest in peace Brian, you were such a blessing to the Beatles.
You are so loved and missed.

Its strange to see John Lennon, after watching so many different interviews and documentaries, always having something to say. But here, he's just shocked and bewildered.
Sure he was never seen like that anywhere, anytime!! looks absolutely like a little boy..!! the first seconds and his "I don't know" are absolutely thrilling and yes really show his deep affection for the guy!!! he's absolutely lost and distraught!! certainly high also but obviously shocked.. then, as sbdy said below, George comes and solves the problem.. and it's so nice to see them both like brothers like that, no kidding for sure!! wonderful testimony..
It's not very often you get to see John and George together, but it's nice to see it...
You can clearly see the bewildered shock in John's face at 0:22. Brian Epstein was the "glue" that kept the Beatles together and when he died on August 27, 1967 that date was also the beginning of the end of the band. Of course they released a few more albums and stayed together for just under three years after Brian died but Brian knew how to keep the tensions and infighting down amongst the band and when he was no longer there it was like they began to lose direction and started to wander off on different paths. Yoko Ono became John's "security blanket" of sorts to help comfort him but her presence only served to exacerbate and hasten the Beatles breakup in my opinion.
Johns reaction is so like Paul's reaction in December 80.
The genuine look of shock & denial is unsettling ❤
Exactly what I was thinking.
On that matter, I'm not one of those people who thinks Paul is faultless and beyond reproach but it's fucking ridiculous that anyone saw his reaction in that clip as not caring or disrespectful and gave him shit for it. Not that we are owed expressions of grief, but his was one of the most genuine I've seen.
@AllWordsAreDust absolutely, friend.
His reaction that night was pretty typical denial-type of shock that affects anyone who's lost a family member or former workmate so young, so pointlessly.
I think the police were in a car in the vicinity as Paul may have been 'at risk' reprisal wise?
He was pretty shocked & seemed to just want to get the hell away from the press
Interesting that "Paul" is not there with the other three

How must that feel, to be on top of the world with your partners and best friends, in the greatest band on Earth on it's peak, when suddenly out of nowhere your mentor and good friend just dies. That would take the wind out of you for sure, I'm surprised they even took this interview so soon.

When BE died, it was the beginning of the end for the Beatles.
I'm convinced 100% that a living BE would've kept the group together for at least another 5-10 years.
I don’t think so Paul said in an interview that he could tell that John wanted to move to different things especially with Yoko and progress more on his life than the Beatles (not a direct quote but that’s what I took from it)
Plausible.
oldnative o yep! I agree
I'm not a very negative or closed-minded person, but I do not disagree with that statement at all.
@oldnative o Paul isn't dead you dumbwit!
For obvious reasons, this is the most serious interview I’ve seen featuring John. No humor whatsoever. As everyone else has suggested, he’s either really shocked, on something, or a combination of both. I imagine it’s the former though. And as someone else pointed out, this REALLY COULD be pinned as the start of the breakup of the Beatles.
They needed that neutral figure managing them. IT kept them grounded to a degree.
John's face is heartbreaking, hes so out of it in this interview. You can hear his voice quivering as he spoke at 2:10
Never knew this existed. It’s like seeing the very beginning of the end for the band here in this interview, I can’t imagine what it was like in their heads at the time.
George just had a peace to him that even this he could “move on” from. John unfortunately went downhill mentally from here..

This is an opportunity to see more of the personalities of George and John. George had a real strength. I don’t think people realized how emotional & empathetic John was. His wit sort of makes it hard to see. But truly, sometimes the most sensitive & insecure or empathetic people wear humor as a mask. In ways, I’m angry to see people asking so many questions but George & John were nice about it.
Wow! John looks ruddy well astonished. Almost in shock. Really got his guard down.

Shocked….and stunned
john looks like hes so close to tears, which is understandable. when i first saw this video i cried because ive never seen john like that. everyone always just sees john in his witty, sarcastic, sassy mood but hes just really hurting in this interview and hes so shocked. i believe he was a very sensitive person, but mostly didnt show it, because of the whole fame or because of embarassment, idek. i love him so much, rip my dear.
I can't blame John for looking so shocked in this interview. Brian Epstein's death clearly hit him hard. 😞
John is so confused...he didn´t know what to say, he was really shocked, breaks my heart seeing him like that
A very serious, sober and somber John. As well as George
Beautiful, sober words from a man who would go through the horror of assassination only thirteen years later.....
this is the most vulnerable and sad i've ever seen john. it's heartbreaking.
The real John Lennon. Not the outspoken cocky smart arse that some people thought. Brian had become almost a father figure to these lads and was very protective of them, because it was more than money could ever buy, it was genuine love. George here, had really matured and was also very protective of John Lennon here, by handling the media. Without Brian, the Beatles would never be known, and John Lennon knew this, which is why he was completely shocked and stunned into silence.
John looks scared, worried. A ‘what the hell are we gonna do now’ look. He’s obviously shocked.
John & George were so gracious & polite. Being Under such unexpected circumstances! You can see the shock in John's 👁️👁️ They Answered all those questions with dignity & Class!
Note : If Brian Epstein had lived? The Beatles Story would of been so different! Maybe even Greater than it turned out! There's certainly wouldn't have been any lawsuits! Between Them Self's!
Brian was the reason the Beatles succeeded. Without him, they would never have made a record.
John is in total shock
Looks like it was really hitting John the moment he has being asked the questions. The part where George says 'there's no such thing as death on a spiritual level, and the comfort is to know is that he's ok..' is missing from this.
I never knew George said that and, my god, is it devastating but so cosmically attuned.
John looks shocked and scared. George calm, centred and collected.
Brian’s tragic death was really the beginning of the end for The Beatles 😢

John looks so lost and broken. He lost so many people in his life, this truly jumpstarted the end of the group and of John himself. After this, John went on a self destructive path that went on for years. It breaks my heart how much John suffered.
We all need a bro like George.
And that ladies and gentleman is the real reason why the Beatles broke up
I agree 100%
George was more spritual about Brian's death John was just shocked
The beginning of the end for the Beatles
"WIthout Brian Epstein there would have been no Beatles" (Sir George Martin) and by Johns utter look of shock, he probably knew this to be true as well at that time
I've never seen a video of John looking so defeated and lost...
I'll never forget this day , I was in disbelief. as John Lennon said were lost without him..how true , how true...
You can tell John was very upset; in a state of shock.
John later said that he felt that after Brian died, the Beatles, “had had it”.
My ears left my body in the first 2 seconds of this video
This is the most realistic interview i have ever heard of the Beatles members ( without wits, humors, jokes...etc)
This would have been extra hard on John.
John was probably the closest in the band to Epstein. They used to go on holidays together and were even once accused of being in a relationship.
Throughout John's life he endured so much pain.
His mother dying, his father leaving, his uncle dying, Epstein, his family complications and others.
I swear John's voice almost wavers at the end there. In his Lennon Remembers interview, he really seemed to despise the way the Maharishi told them to be "happy" after Brian's death.
John appears to be on the brink of tears, like a little boy....I think the very definition of numb.
Brian was family to the Beatles. RIP John, George, and Brian; you are all sadly missed❤❤❤.
John had a lot of respect for Brian, never seen John so shocked and lost for words
I thought it was grossfully unfair for the press to get right in John and Georges face in this unbelievably difficult moment for them...kudos to them for being so professional..especially George who took up the slack for a shell shocked John Lennon...!!
poor john. you can see how shocked he is because he would be the one answering them all but George knew he was in shock that he did it :( the quiet beatle even..thats so sad
This is what really broke up the Beatles, they had no one to always pull them together anymore
Billy really did try but never loved them as Paul did. It's in Memoirs.
John took Brians death very hard. He was in complete shock.
Wasn't over Paul's death yet, when Billy pulled his power play
with john’s history of deaths close to him, he was probably feeling a lot more than anyone would know during this time. poor thing
Wondering why people are commenting that John is high during this interview. If someone is high, can they make direct eye contact, stand perfectly still, be fully cognizant, listen, and answer all questions the way he did there? It’s so sad that this happened and to see our normally energetic, humorous, and strong front man John looking broken and confused. And scared. May they all Rest In Peace.
