However, THERE WOULD BE NO CATALOG IF PAUL HAD NOT CREATED IT. These are NOT "just songs". These are song HE WROTE, HE CREATED. He had every right to want them back, they came from HIS MIND. I don't know I have discovered many great songs through Commercials . Also a lot of TV shows used to play some really great songs I'd never heard of at the end of the episode to match the tone of the episode or what a character was experiencing . The song at the end of the final episode of breaking bad is one perfect example or that song at the end of the sopranos

@jimi hendrix Paul was so flattered when Jimi played some Sgt. Peppers, literally just a few days after its release at his show. Too bad Clapton didn’t tune his guitar for him-obviously a joke, but some thought it was real.
The fact that he had the chance to buy them, and he didn't because they were Lennon-McCartney songs and not just McCartney songs just says a lot about how great the man is
Either that or it's an excuse for a huge mistake he made. He could've bought the catalog and said that he was the only person to make that decision, and that John would've wanted it that way. Nobody would've blamed him for it since otherwise their music would've gone to MJ. He did the right thing and asked Yoko; when she misjudged the situation he should've acted it on his own. 50 million is a lot of money but it wasn't too difficult to see that the value would go up in time.
@Basement Network Because in retrospect a few generations later, the commercial use is more blatant than even Paul expected. He's not threatening to sue or calling anyone a bad name....he's complaining about it when asked how it went down and how he feels.
i mean, id argue the 1770's were a pretty exceptional decade for music.or the 1810s. or the majority of the great decades for classic/barouque/ragtime/jazz music pre 1950. for rock music though? sure
McCartney was so naive. He was just a working class guy who didn’t knew anything about the music business. But that’s why he’s so strong. He knew how to deal with everything. This man deserves a lot of respect.
Plenty of musicians back then got screwed over in similar ways. It was really the first time massive money was coming in for pop/rock stars on a world stage. Everyone was naive

I thought there was a bit of sour grapes here on Paul’s part! He sounds quite understandably cheesed off but the truth is that he missed several opportunities to secure the rights, the last time being when he and Ono undervalued them significantly. You can’t blame it on MJ, he wasn’t the richest person around by any means.
I agree. This was the same with Prince . Its why he changed his name for awhile to the symbol. Its why he fought for artist rights and started Paisley Park records and eventuallly got his masters back before he died.
One of the best things about MJ owning the Beatles catalog is that it also included Little Richard's catalog, which was worth at least 20 million. MJ gave him back all the rights to his songs for free, which allowed him to live comfortably for the rest of his life.
MJ gave McCartney jack shit. Where did you get that from? McCartney sued a couple of years ago, around 2016/2017 I think, to recover his half share of the Lennon/McCartney catalog, as US copyright laws allow the artist/writer to reclaim the rights on anything published before 1978 - ie the whole Beatles catalog. So McCartney now owns half of the catalog, but MJ didn't give this to him. McCartney has a net worth of over £1.2 billion (most of which he had before re-acquiring his share of the Beatles rights), making him the most successful musician of all time (and that includes MJ), so thankfully he didn't need any gifts from MJ to enable him to live comfortably for the rest of his life.
@@kendallroberts5337 well, he didn't really make that clear. But let's not pretend mj did that out of the goodness of his own heart. Little Richard would have been entitled to get back his artist rights in the same way as McCartney did, due to the age of the catalog, and mj and his advisors would have known that.

@Mason [edit: apologies for the long response, i don’t know how to be brief lol] yes, but the truth is that having your music in too many ads can “devalue” it, as paul said. an example that comes to mind is the black keys; i remember hearing their songs in so many commercials as a kid, before i even knew who they were. by the time they became mainstream, i’m sure a lot of their back catalog had lost a substantial amount of its value (which they did make up for through multiple albums and relentless touring in the early-mid 2010s). you’re right in that there’s nothing inherently wrong with “selling out”, but artists don’t just care about profits… they also care about their music’s artistic integrity, and in many of those cases it’s understandable when they turn such offers down.
@Mason how you relate anti greed and monopolisation to being weak is supporting the belief that having more means being more. An error of profound implications.
There are other information confirming that Michael did contact Paul McCartney proposing to buy together the BEATLES cataloque approx us$ 40 millions ( 20 each) but Paul said he couldn t afford 20 millions, so Michael told him he would buy it in total. Paul most likely contacted Yoko Ono for sharing the purchase 10 mls each but it did not succeed. So Michael did the deal.
I heard that story too. Michael wanted to go half’s with Paul but he says there too expensive, then I think Michael asked Ono to go three ways but she wasn’t interested or something. So yes Michael overpaid for them, I think 83 mil instead of 60 mil or so. But he did offer Paul the chance so he didn’t do anything wrong.
He mentions something that I completely agree with I hate it when bands or artists come out with an album or song and within a year their songs are being played on television commercials 😖😖

@TheManMan Grace in how he handled MJ’s disloyal “snake move.” In other words, McCartney just wreaks of class. He doesn’t seem consumed with vindictive rage. Man, I would’ve been ‘off the chain’ in calling out MJ as a Judas. McCartney took the high road, and in so doing he demonstrated total class and grace.
@TheManMan You’re 100% correct. He said that exactly. I think Sir Paul didn’t take him seriously enough, or thought he was just kidding ... The one aspect where I think McCartney bears some blame is in not just buying the music himself. I know he briefly addresses that in this segment. And so he (McCartney) had to know that if he didn’t buy the publishing rights to the Lennon-McCartney Catalogue, SOMEONE eventually would, whether it be MJ or someone else. So that aspect of things is the only head-scratcher for me, where Paul seems perhaps a tad disingenuous. Maybe I’m missing something. Lol
@TheManMan And I’ve heard often times (who knows if it’s true) that McCartney has a reputation for being a tightwad, which is crazy because the guy is worth like a gazillion dollars. He’s so rich, that he was the richest person in the UK. Heather Mills divorced him and took almost half of all he had. And he was STILL the richest person in England 😂 But anyway, my point being that his being a tightwad is probably why he didn’t buy back his music, and it came back to bite him .
It’s ironic that, as a kid, seeing that sneakers commercial that used Revolution made me a Beatles fan. I didn’t know any better. As I got older, I understood why Paul was so uneasy with them using it in such a way. He has integrity.

What he doesn't tell is, that Michael called him before and offered to buy the songs 50/50. It was 50 Million $ in that time but Paul McCartney refused, because it was too expensive in his opinion. Than MJ bought them all for 50 Million $ and after years they had a value of more than 500 Million $. But what's the fault of MJ in this case?
His fault is that he degraded the songs in spite of the songwriter's wish and that he took away the opportunity from Paul to buy them by offering a huge amount to the seller. At least according to what Paul is saying in this video.
@@alexsandra7173 do you think MJ was dumb enough to overvalue something he was about to buy ?? Another reason to have mad respect for Prince who rebelled against record companies owning artist's work and then he signed older artists who had been screwed in the past in order to reward them properly. Artists such as Sly Stone and Larry Graham for example.
Michael Jackson was an absolute legend. What a lot of people don’t know is that after Mike bought the catalogue, he gave Little Richard back his masters…FOR FREE. Little Richard was in debt and didn’t own his own music that he’d written, as many black artists of the time. Michael gave the true king of rock and roll back his masters and he was able to financially benefit from his work for 35 years until his death in 2020. Michael also gave Jackie Wilson’s widow his masters, also for free. Jackie Wilson was Michael’s predecessor and influenced Michael greatly as a boy. what people don’t understand is that music IS a business. When I think about the black artists who paved the way, I can’t help but think of how they were also taken advantage of by companies like the one Michael bought. The Beatles benefited greatly by co-opting the sounds of artists like Muddy Waters, and their whiteness allowed them to be massive stars around the world. The Beatles were great, but compared to black American artists before and around their time who didn’t get half the chance, the Beatles were overrated. Good on MJ for giving black artist back their work.
The Beatles were certainly not over rated. They wrote their lyrics and played their own instruments. Not like artist today, sampling all the hits they never wrote.
And people dont understand this fact that music is a huge business. He owned many catalogs aka music songs and albums aka the music rights. It warms my heart he gave back those masters for free. He owned so many catalogs that Sony became Sony ATV. And they wanted him to sell it. And Michael wouldn't. That is a very good reason to lie on someone throughout their career and attack them in the media wouldn't you say? And guess what Sony/ATV got their catalogs after he passed. But Michael Jackson and his family to this day still own Michael's catelog aka music right aka rights to his songs and Heal LA is still a huge thing through his son today If my memory serves me he bought the rights around 1985. In 1982 he song beat it. Which only the light of this information I think the song can point to him thinking about buying those rights and what it would mean.
Wonder if Mike felt some kinda way cuz he knew the Beatles were heavily ripping from Muddy and Chuck Berry and others from that late 40s, early 50s era. I feel like he knew it and felt no reservations about grabbing that catalogue when the opportunity arose. He told him ‘it’s just business’ as a way to keep the heat on himself instead of letting Paul know they had no love and respect from a lot of legends in the community. Saved Paul from that conversation too cause the Beatles had no concrete answers for explaining their own profit off others ‘originality’.

One of the best things about MJ owning the Beatles catalog is that it also included Little Richard's catalog, which was worth at least 20 million. MJ gave him back all the rights to his songs for free, which allowed him to live comfortably for the rest of his life.
Preach
The nerve of Mcartney to complain and be butt hurt, when he once owned Tooty Fruity.

@Mason [edit: apologies for the long response, i don’t know how to be brief lol]
yes, but the truth is that having your music in too many ads can “devalue” it, as paul said. an example that comes to mind is the black keys; i remember hearing their songs in so many commercials as a kid, before i even knew who they were. by the time they became mainstream, i’m sure a lot of their back catalog had lost a substantial amount of its value (which they did make up for through multiple albums and relentless touring in the early-mid 2010s). you’re right in that there’s nothing inherently wrong with “selling out”, but artists don’t just care about profits… they also care about their music’s artistic integrity, and in many of those cases it’s understandable when they turn such offers down.
@Mason Some people aren't scrounging down the back of the sofa for chump change either.
Should have bought them then.
@Mason how you relate anti greed and monopolisation to being weak is supporting the belief that having more means being more. An error of profound implications.

There are other information confirming that Michael did contact Paul McCartney proposing to buy together the BEATLES cataloque approx us$ 40 millions ( 20 each) but Paul said he couldn t
afford 20 millions, so Michael told him he would buy it in total. Paul most likely contacted Yoko Ono for sharing the purchase 10 mls each but it did not succeed. So Michael did the deal.
Yep, there's always two sides to a story.

WAY TO GO, Sir Paul!! What integrity! What grace!

But Michael Jackson and his family to this day still own Michael's catelog aka music right aka rights to his songs and Heal LA is still a huge thing through his son today
If my memory serves me he bought the rights around 1985.
