As I write this, the second and third biggest cities have been overtaken by the Taliban, Kabul is surrounded, and the entire country is on the brink of collapse. I fear for the women there, who will no longer be able to go to school, own a business, ect. We NEED to keep our word to the thousands of translators who have worked with us and evacuate ALL of them!
Wow! What a great comment section. So many positive sayings about my homeland🇦🇫 It really shows that there are good hearted and smart people around the world who supports peace and prosperity all around the world.
I am a U.S. Christian & pray for Afghanistan daily. I am ashamed & repent of the sorrow & destruction which I believe my nation has caused Afghanistan. Watching this, I am stunned to learn how very much the long history of Afghanistan is laden with war & foreigners from various countries coming invading. Location seems to be an aspect of that. On can even begin to wonder if Afghanistan has been cursed for some reason? Perhaps the people of Afghanistan can together pray for God's blessing in the future. Sorry if name icon comes up 2x. Computer glitch
Since you feel so ashamed of the U.S. you should donate all your money/property to the afghan people and renounce you citizenship and move to Afghanistan. Its the right thing to do.
It's ok. Us little guys are usually the ones paying the price for the ambitions of evil men, so there's some camaraderie there to be had if you ignore our national identities for a moment.
@@jamessickmore236 the right thing to do would be for the government of the US to own up to its mistakes and rebuild the country using the resources it stole from the country. One individual person giving up their wealth and property will have zero impact. If you have the time to make snidy comments on TH-cam maybe you should use that time to create a movement and influence the government to make up for its mistakes.
@@kryptoniteee lol How was Afghanistan a mistake? They had terrorist training camps throughout the country. Next you gonna tell me they don't hate the Infidels. Im just sad they didn't Nuke the place.
@Atif Shah Why shouldn't people make fun of Islam, it's not such a great religion when it espouses convert, submit and pay, or die tactics. The religion of peace my ass. Of course it deserves mockery.
Raees Zargar you are absolutely correct in saying that Nepal just a poor country with no importance. Know that the best fighters that Afghanistan has, were bested by a bunch of poor Nepalese Gurkhas. Let that sink in. Gurkhas are the most superior fighting soldier that I have ever seen. On a side note; Afghanistan is pretty much worthless. “If” Afghanistan took advantage of it’s mineral deposits, then that would be different, but they don’t, and they likely never will. Especially since the Taliban are likely to take over in say the next year or two. Folks in Kabul had better get ready because that Olympic Soccer field is about to be used again to start lobbing off heads. Bet the Afghans wouldn’t mind some help from the Gurkhas then.
Deaths gamer well bud; if you put down your controller and left your parents basement, you’d realize that there had been 2 wars in the last 19 years. Some of us actually fought in them, and didn’t have to get all of our experience an Xbox PlayStation.
The war started extactly in the year that I was born. Now I am 42. I have never seen a peaceful Afghanistan. Afghanistan is truly a land of never ending wars. The roots of these wars are in the culture, in the history, in the mindsets, in the thinkings and in the soroudings. The roots are too deep and too old.
My first real job was at a restaurant and the head chef was Afghan, he taught me some very valuable lessons and was very strict. But he was also the most kind and sincere person. I can see why now, history of where you are from can really make the character of future generations.
Mass respect to afghan people from a Greek. Proud to have a common history. Let's both of our nation regain their ancient glory, and such a thing as allies.
During the Mahabharata, Gandhari cursed her brother Shakuni, The ruler of Gandhara, that his Kingdom shall always suffer as her sons did in the War before dying. Gandhara was the ancient name of Afghanistan and Gandhari was an Afghan Princess. Looking at Afghanistan's history with Empires falling and rising every 50 years and most of them foreign, gives me chills.
Completely wrong lol. As an Afghan, it would be nice for others to stop claiming afghan history as Persian, Arab or Indian. Recently Indians have been relentless at claiming afghan history through a distant more than 2000 yrs old history where a small region was once ruled by an "Indian kingdom." Gandhara is mostly present day Pakistan and included small parts of southern Afghanistan. We were bactrian and in ancient times Afghanistan was called "Ariana" because we had Aryan tribes.
Map is wrong... Afghanistan borders India as well... Terrorism sponsor Pak has illegally occupied that region.. It has cleansed the original population there and installed Pathans there
Diego Quaresma why you sound like, you got beaten by an Afghan. Hey, trust me you don’t want to talk about religion. Quran (60:8) : Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. Believe me it is the most peaceful religion. Tell me if you have any better religion.

The Afghan people have a rich culture and as a blacksmith ive always thought that the best and most beautiful weapons and crafts came out of that region.

Recently met a group of Afghanis who fled due to the crisis of the Taliban taking control. They are such friendly, hardworking people. I was astounded by how ‘Western’ they are, Amazing at speaking English, and just so grateful to be in a safe country. The media always paints a negative picture of Afghanistan. I had a lovely conversation with a man named Gull who was a tour guide and lost everything due to the conflict. He told me he would take me on a great tour once the country becomes safe again, and I really wish it does. They are a resilient people and don’t deserve to always get the shit end of the stick. Long live Afghanistan!

Epimetheus it was a great video! However, I think you missed out on talking about the Durand line treaty, and the “breaking” of the treaty when Pakistan was made. Made a lot of people super super salty
Robustus there are many ethnicities in afghanistan. those who are of aryan ancestry (like ethnic afghans ie pashtuns), are well aware of their aryan ancestry. however most of afghans don't care so much about such stuff.

I have had an infatuation with Afghanistan since I was a boy, watching a National Geographic documentary on Buzkashi and The Mujahadeen. I joke to my wife that I need to learn how to make clementine cake so I can hike Afghanistan. See The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty for that last part.
I truly wish peace and prosperity for your FABULOUS country but, need to work so hard, in order to reac those core objectives. We all should contribute into it. However, religion, power and money should stay out if it we want to reach our aim, to be able to build a nation where everyone could live peacefully beyond any creed and culture.
It was a very good video and well documented. You have just missed the Durand line. Modern state of Afghanistan was neighboring British India but after creation of Pakistan in 1947 half of Afghanistan was given to Pakistan by British India and till now no Afghan government has accepted the Durand line as an international border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The line actually separated the Pashtun people who always willing to rejoin.
@It Ain't Me 1968 its more like arnt they tired of being invaded lol, my family motto is victory or death. I'm sure they understand this there because they definitely fight like it. They just need to heal and grow more powerful as they will and I hope they become rich because they shouldn't be a 3rd world country they should at least be second if not first but all the biggest countries invaded them so that no one else would annex afghan and get bigger I hate human greed.
@It Ain't Me 1968 nah man im Canadian my family is Scottish, you are right about that but it inst as true anymore most Afghani are educated in reading and writing just not English. A 1/3 of there population is in school rn.
If you condense that much history down to 14 minutes only focusing on transfers of power and territorial shifts you can make most long standing places look like they are in constant chaos. A human lifetime to generations of stability often exist between two bullet points in a history book.
Afghanis are very tough, sincere and honest people. I've seen many Afghanis working in Karachi, some of the best people really. Love for Afghanistan ♥️
Afghanistan's ancient history is so rich that it could be the perfect focus for an entire history documentary series! It was once a major crossroads on the Silk Road, connecting cultures and empires, from the Persians and Greeks to the Mauryans and Mongols. Its heritage is filled with stories of great civilizations and iconic historical sites, such as the Buddhas of Bamiyan and the city of Herat.
The name “Iran” comes from the word “Aryānām” (Land of the Aryans), which is rooted in ancient Iran and Avestan languages. “Iran” literally translates to “land of the Aryans” or “place of the noble people.” Persian Empire is not the same as Iran-there is a significant difference. Aryana (or Iran) was a distinct region whereas Persia was an empire that invaded and ruled over various areas , including Aryana(ancient Iran- present day Afghanistan ) Persia was an imperial power, but Iran (present day Afghanistan ) had its own distinct identity long before and during Persian Indeed, the historical region encompassing modern-day Afghanistan has been referred to as “Iran” in various contexts throughout history, particularly in ancient texts. The name “Aryana,” often associated with the term “Iran,” has specific historical significance. Here’s a brief explanation of this connection: • In ancient Indo-Iranian culture, the term Arya was used to signify the noble or honorable people • Ancient Iran sources, including the Avesta and works by historians like Herodotus, often describe lands and tribes that align with the geographic and ethnic context of modern Afghanistan. • The Greeks referred to parts of this region as “Ariana,” which included cities and areas within Afghanistan. Putting that aside The name Aryana(Iran) specifically refers to the territories that currently belong to Afghanistan, and this region has historically been recognized as part of Aryan culture and civilization. The cultural and historical significance of this area and its connection to ancient Iran is clearly evident in historical texts and literature. With the changes in names throughout history, cultural and historical identities may have been overlooked. The name “Iran” was officially adopted only in the early twentieth century, replacing the term Persia, whereas the history and culture associated with Aryana(Iran) and other regions have existed for thousands of years. Here is a list of historical names associated with only with territories of the present day of Afghanistan: • Aryana (Airyanem Vaejah) • Iran • Bactria • Khurasan • Ghaznavid Empire • Ghor • Ancient Sistan( not the one in present day Iran with only 100- 150 years of history My point is out that the modern geographic boundaries of Iran do not align with many of the historical sites and events often attributed to ancient “Iran,” particularly when considering the larger region of Greater Iran or Aryana. Afghanistan, for example, was a crucial part of these empires and was home to many key cities and cultural centers. This larger cultural sphere is sometimes referred to as Greater Iran, which encompassed a broader range of the Achaemenids and later empires. In conclusion, while modern Iran retains the cultural heritage of ancient Iran , its current geography does not encompass all the historically significant places once associated with the larger “Iranian” or “Aryana” world. This makes it important to distinguish between the ancient and modern definitions of “Iran” when discussing historical places and events.

@Ali Mamund Yes. They were defeated after many victories earlier as well. However, their priority changed to conquer the rest of Central Asia, the middle east and Europe afterwards, which they were successful in doing. Almost all empires were never interested in keeping their hold on Afghanistan for long once they were inside because of way too many mountains and lack of natural resources. It was simply not worth it for anyone to keep occupying and ruling it. Except for in the modern time for USA & India (to destabilise both Afghanistan & Pakistan), for Pakistan (to try to keep both Pakistan & Afghanistan stable due to other countries' presence) for Russia (to counter the influence of USA), for Saudi Arabia & Iran (to spread their religious ideologies i.e. Sunni vs Shia).

In The Indian Epic Mahabharata, One of the Most Important characters known as 'Shakuni', was from Kingdom of Gandhar, which is today known as Afghanistan.
Fascinating summary of the history. What I found most useful was the superimposition of the different empires with various colours on the map, showing the extent of their reign and the timeframes. It was way too much for me to absorb but I will probably watch it quite few times as a reference for understanding the history of the country and the region. Really well done - thank you.
It would be great if we could send archaeologists instead of troops to find out more about the ancient history of the region. Things will have to calm down a lot for that to happen though.
@@justsomeguy335 I didn't suggest that, but now that you mention it, look what ISIS did to archaeological sites in Iraq. Look what the Taliban did to the Buddhas of Bamiyan. Look what the people did to the National Museum of Afghanistan. Look what China did during the great leap forward, to erase their own historical past. Look what the Soviets did with their anti-religious policies, destroying mosques and other cultural heritage wherever they set foot. Sometimes the safest place is far away from conflict zones. So if you call preserving archaeological artifacts stealing, then yes.

Taliban will always receive help from outside. We don’t stand a chance against them as long as outsiders keep supporting them. After decades of war we have a generation of poor people who were literally born into a battle zone, with no education. My prediction…the Taliban stays as rulers for a few years then begins to kill people and double crosses a stronger country and gets removed from power as quickly as it got there. Then retreats to the mountains and Pakistan to wage war for another 10-20 years until the whole process begins again. There are too many cultures and religions that have rules over this area for everyone to simply accept the other ruling party. These are people that have lived through thousands of generations of war. I wish them peace and prosperity but sadly history cannot be ignored.
They’ll go after China because of all the Muslims they put in concentration camps. CCP is concerned about that. They could wipe out the taliban because they’re not afraid to use their full might, but they also don’t want to use it because then it’s just one more reason for the international community to use against them.

“Iran” literally translates to “land of the Aryans” or “place of the noble people.”
Persian Empire is not the same as Iran-there is a significant difference. Aryana (or Iran) was a distinct region whereas Persia was an empire that invaded and ruled over various areas , including Aryana(ancient Iran- present day Afghanistan ) Persia was an imperial power, but Iran (present day Afghanistan ) had its own distinct identity long before and during Persian
Indeed, the historical region encompassing modern-day Afghanistan has been referred to as “Iran” in various contexts throughout history, particularly in ancient texts. The name “Aryana,” often associated with the term “Iran,” has specific historical significance. Here’s a brief explanation of this connection:
• In ancient Indo-Iranian culture, the term Arya was used to signify the noble or honorable people
• Ancient Iran sources, including the Avesta and works by historians like Herodotus, often describe lands and tribes that align with the geographic and ethnic context of modern Afghanistan.
• The Greeks referred to parts of this region as “Ariana,” which included cities and areas within Afghanistan.
Putting that aside
The name Aryana(Iran) specifically refers to the territories that currently belong to Afghanistan, and this region has historically been recognized as part of Aryan culture and civilization.
Here is a list of historical names associated with only with territories of the present day of Afghanistan:
• Aryana (Airyanem Vaejah)
• Iran
• Bactria
• Khurasan
• Ghaznavid Empire
• Ghor
• Ancient Sistan( not the one in present day Iran with only 100- 150 years of history
My point is out that the modern geographic boundaries of Iran do not align with many of the historical sites and events often attributed to ancient “Iran,” particularly when considering the larger region of Greater Iran or Aryana.

Joe this reminds me of the news reports in the opening months of war after 9/11. Some reporter was in the face of these rough northern alliance fighters in the mountains. The reporter asked repeatedly how the fight against al qaeda goes and the fighter's eyes just kept shifting back and fourth and another fighter in the back says in Farsi "eee al qaeda bay-padar qeest? He maybe here in the US but I don’t want him to be a US. I don’t want him to change. He is learning English and I am learning Pashto. Alexander was on a roll prior to the Afghan war. Things went downhill for him very quickly once that started. "Graveyard of Empires" indeed.
@@AK-dd9od Alexander was never defeated. He pushed into India and only needed to go back because his troops were deeply angry about how much was there was. The only reason Alexander's empire collapsed was because of his untimely death.
The Afghan war broke Alexander's army. As a result, his demoralized troops mutinied at the Beas river in Northern India, a short distance from Afghanistan.
In his letters to his mom, Alexander described how formidable the Afghans are.

The region of Afghanistan was once called Gandhara with Taxila as its capital. Taxila was an education hub in ancient times and had one of the earliest Universities in the world. The mother of Kauravas in the Ancient Indian epic Mahabharata was from this region.

Taliban will always receive help from outside. We don’t stand a chance against them as long as outsiders keep supporting them. After decades of war we have a generation of poor people who were literally born into a battle zone, with no education.
There are two solutions:
1- start building schools to improve the economy, which is not possible until
2- we find an ally who will help us get rid of the Taliban

My prediction…the Taliban stays as rulers for a few years then begins to kill people and double crosses a stronger country and gets removed from power as quickly as it got there. Then retreats to the mountains and Pakistan to wage war for another 10-20 years until the whole process begins again. There are too many cultures and religions that have rules over this area for everyone to simply accept the other ruling party. These are people that have lived through thousands of generations of war. I wish them peace and prosperity but sadly history cannot be ignored.

They’ll go after China because of all the Muslims they put in concentration camps. CCP is concerned about that.
