Afghanistan in the 1950s: Back to the Future [Full Documentary] - BBC News

  • Sixty years ago, life in Afghanistan was very different to the battleground it's become in recent decades. America’s relationship with the country was also very different as can be seen from a remarkable treasure trove of films, shot in the 1950s by American Glenn Foster, and his Afghan assistant Hajji Mehtabuddin.
Saeeda Mahmood, born and brought up in southern Afghanistan, explores and introduces the films.

@@michaelvandyne6480 thanks Michael, its a shame some ignorant people who have never met an Afghan will look at what they see in the media and wrongly assume we are all terrorists. It’s always the peaceful loving people getting abused. Always. No one should ever have to live in the type of fear I see in those children’s eyes. Something needs to change.
A president shouldn’t be able to unilaterally end a war or a humanitarian military deployment like Joe did. It should be voted on by a special council that’s been continually briefed on all pertinent intelligence throughout the entirety of the conflict. They always talk about the cost. Who pays the bill? The people! That’s who! So when you spent money our grandkids have to pay back, act a little more responsibly. This is heartbreaking! Everyone 32 and younger probably saw themselves as friends and allies to the US. Can you imagine having your reality just destroyed in a second. Just imagine realizing your guiding light, your beacon of hope, just doesn’t give a shit if you live or die? I don’t need to imagine it! It’s a soul shattering experience, that a big portion of your heart won’t survive.
The right thing to do would be to go back, and give our military the green light to get rid of the Taliban.

The Taliban has a history of terrorizing their own people, raping women and girls, treating women and girls like property, etc. I hope God doesn't bless them for that, but I pray for the Afghanistan people who are now targets of the Taliban. They have a hit list and have already tortured and killed a number of their own people, which is disturbingly sad and barbaric. I hope that you really didn't mean what you just stated in your comment. 😞

The withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan was a serious mistake! The West should have stayed there with a certain number of soldiers. Much has been achieved in Afghanistan in the past 20 years. Schools, hospitals and universities were built. Millions of Afghans enjoyed freedoms for the first time in their lives. Armed resistance has already formed in many places in Afghanistan. The West must support these people with money, weapons, ammunition, logistics and training. Air strikes would also be possible. The great danger now is that Afghanistan will once again become a haven for all sorts of Islamist terrorist organizations. The West must now get as many local workers and other particularly threatened groups of people out of this country as possible. This also applies to their core families. The goal must be to overthrow the Taliban and protect innocent people. That does not mean that one country can or should solve these problems on its own. Joe Biden has done a lot of damage to himself and his country! I hope better times will come again!

I have always been fascinated by Afghanistan. I had read all I could when I was young (I was born in 1950) and my heart sank when I learned that we were going to go there and fight a war. I knew it would not go well. I had read about the British, the Russians, and in ancient times, the Greeks and Persians and how they could never subdue the tribal people in that wild country. I am so sorry for the Afghans, and all they lost from the time the Russians invaded. If only they could have gone on with their efforts at self determination. I can see from the one woman who had to flee "in plastic shoes" to Pakistan that their hearts were broken.

Claiming americans were trying to shove an ideology down these peoples throats is a bit hypocritical when one overlooks the simple fact that the soviets had been messing around that country for a very long time (SHOVING DOWN COMMUNISM) down those peoples throats.no my friend the americans didnt make things bad in afghanistan. Its a combination of things and the soviets definetly played a part in it, a huge one i should say, and it goes beyond the 1970s 1980s soviet invasion.Soviets have been meddling in that country since 1925 when they first got involved in a conflict in that country and again in the afghan civil war of 1928 ultimatly supporting and stabblishing a communist regime there in the 1970s.SO if youre gonna claim that americans are/were trying to shove down their democracy and ideologys down afghans throats just dont overlook that soviets were doing it long before and actually made things worst long before americans even thought about that country

Pakistan had a big role…they funded the taliban and was the first country to recognise them as a legitimate government in the mid 90s amid all the atrocities the terrorists were committing. Put simply without pakistan there would be no taliban. The talibs were indoctrinated at Madrassas in pakistan that were funded by US and Saudi. Many talibs are pakistani not afghan. This is why SanctionPakistan is trending. Look into it. Afghans are taking a stand against pakistans meddling in our affairs

@@VijayNinel yes however majority like ahmad shah’s faction were heroes for afghans and they were the ones who liberated afghans from soviets. The talibs were not a direct creation of the 80’s mujahideen thats my point. The talibs were schooled in pakistani madrassas. In fact ahmad shah was very anti-Taliban. They do not hold the same values and morals. Osama was a Saudi intruder not an afghan

This is a wonderful film. And also very sad to learn how quickly Afghanistan changed from a thriving growing country where the people felt safe, to the coup in 1978, then the Soviet invasion; changed a beautiful thriving country for the last 40 years into a place where people live in fear. Afghanistan of the 50s-70s was like a dream. Yet so many Afghans have no memories of what it once was. It was all lost to quickly.
It makes me think of the possibilities of what is happening in the US now, and how the average American people have no idea how precious our Freedom is and quickly it could disappear.

interesting, I have samilar view of America it is crumbeling similar to various times in Afghanistan history. If Americans don't work in fixing its many internal conflicts from a genuin caring point of view to eachothers, they might end up as Afghanistan at present. Being a military superpower doesn't guarantee your prosperity forever. Afghanistan has over 5.500+ year of military war history of which more than 3.000 as a military superpower. Arrogance, internal conflicts, ever increasing destruction of communication pathways and bridges between groups as well as individeul will lead to a steap fall, no relationship can be build or remain without trust, internal and external conflict overshodew societies fabric turning a snowbol of negative spiral. The deper you are in the harder it is to come out of it. As for Afghanistan its our 3rd/4th time, it might take a century or more but we will find a way out of it as we have done before.
